Taking In The View: 19th-Century Stereoview Photographs From Our Files By Andrew Richmond

Stereoview photographs (also called stereoscopic photographs or stereographs) did not come into existence until the 1850s, but, as is often the case with scientific advancements, the imaginative vision that gave birth to them was in place years earlier, in this case more than 200 years earlier. As far back as the early 17th century, visionaries were making drawings of what would develop into the stereoviewer, but stereoviewers (or stereoscopes)

Here are eight views of the dead at Gettysburg by Alexander Gardner, from his “Photographic Incidents of the Civil War,” 1863. This group sold at Cowan’s in 2010 for nearly $6,000.

would not become a reality until the early 19th century. Stereoviews are composed of two images that are nearly identical, images that are taken from viewpoints that are a few inches apart, and then mounted on cards. By viewing them through lenses set about eye-width apart, the brain is tricked into combining the images in a way that creates a threedimensional effect. (All the technology that drives 3-D movies today is largely derived from and built upon the same principles and technology that led to stereoviews.) Sir David Brewster designed the classic boxshape stereoviewer and Sir Charles Wheatstone

created the first stereoview in 1833. For the 20 years or so before photography became more widely available, stereoviews were typically drawings. Oliver Wendell Holmes’ invention of a handheld stereoviewer in 1859, which would be manufactured by Joseph Bates, would make stereoviews more convenient and accessible at the same time that stereoviews were becoming more popular due in large part to their ability to make images more widely available, as it would be several decades before photographs could be reproduced in newspapers. Victorians would gather in their parlors and pass stereoviewers around, allowing them to be transported to faraway places and to see the wonders of the world that they might otherwise never have seen. Stereoviews would appear in several different formats before the years of mass-produced curved card mounts in the late 19th century. Photographers experimented with daguerreotype, tintype and albumen stereoviews in the process recording the rapidly changing physical and historical landscape of the late Victorian years. For instance, images of the landscape of the American West, the

development of the railroad system, Native American Indians and their culture, and various mining booms were wildly popular. Stereoviews allowed Americans in particular to see the vastness and diversity of the country. Virtually every small town had a photographer, many of whom were taking stereoview photographs in between the portraits that kept their businesses afloat, and many of these scenes are very rare and very collectible today, in part because they show

landscapes that are otherwise often lost to us. In the mid-1880s, manufacturers found methods to increase the production and availability of stereoviews, with large companies like Underwood & Underwood and Keystone (which would eventually buy out most of the American stereoview market) in America and the London Stereoscopic Company (which was founded in the 1850s and produced hundreds of thousands of stereoviews) in England (Continued on page 8)

The Shadow Show Will Loom Over Manhattan The Manhattan Vintage Book And Ephemera Fair Will Be Held April 9 Who knows the best book fairs in New York City? The Shadow Show knows! Flamingo Eventz and Lamont Cranston plan to step out of the shadows and celebrate rare book week in New York City by announcing the return of the Manhattan Vintage Book and Ephemera Fair and

The Fine Press Book Fair. Known as “The Shadow Show” because it is held in conjunction with the well-known New York Antiquarian Book Fair at the Park Avenue Armory, the show will be held on Saturday, April 9. Last year, the Shadow Show moved

uptown, directly across the street from the Park Avenue Armory to The Church of St. Vincent Ferrer. It is located at 869 Lexington Avenue at 66th Street. Showgoers loved the venue and the show promotors are pleased to be returning to St. Vincent’s this year. There are parking garages throughout the immediate neighborhood and subway stops are nearby. The show hours will be from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Admission will be $15 for adults and $7 for youths ages 12 to 21. Admission will be free of charge for children under 12 with a paid adult. Appraisals for $5 per item will take place from

2 to 4 p.m., conducted by John Bruno and guest appraisers. This show has grown steadily since its inception in 2009 to present some of the finest vintage and antiquarian book and ephemera dealers in the country, as well as Canada and

Europe. Many are members of ABAA, ILAB, ESA, PADA, MARIAB, MABA, LIABDA and other professional groups. As always, the show and fair will present an outstanding array of (Continued on page 8)

actively marketing stereoviews to schools as educational tools. Stereoview popularity would begin to wane in the early years of the 20th century, as technological advances made photographs more easily reproduced, particularly in newspapers and magazines, and by the 1920s, even the largest companies had generally ceased production.

Stereoviews remain widely collectible today however and a number of factors influence their value. Rare images are, naturally, more desirable, whether they are rare because few were produced or because they are of a place or event that is not otherwise well-documented. Certain photographers’ work is also collectible, often because of their particular skill at composing the ele-

The quality of the effect itself is also a factor, although to a lesser degree, and early stereoviews are often more desirable because of their scarcity and the quality of the three-dimensional effect. (Stereoviews were initially mounted on flat cards but in later years, in the era of mass production, it was discovered This is an unusual series of the that the three-dimensional Great Solar Eclipse of 1869, phoqualities of a photograph could tographed by A.K.P. The Ephemera Fair - the largest show of its type in the country - is worth a trip from anywhere, and is a familyfriendly, exciting, and unique destination for browsing, shopping, and learning. And there will be some absolutely

amazing items on display as well. Can’t miss highlights include five pages of Braille pages typed by Helen Keller on a Braille typewriter; 100 pages of food themed sheet music from the 1900s; and an archive of materials, including a bloodstained suicide note, from pyramid-schemer Philip Musica, also known as F. Donald Coster. Coster, who could be compared to Bernie Madoff, is the man behind the 1938 McKesson & Robbins scandal. He stole $3 million (about $50 million in today’s dollars) from the drug company through forgeries, duplicate books, and fraud. The Ephemera Fair features an international group of sellers who specialize in items ranging from A to Z. Care to learn more about Valentine cards or documents signed by presidents? Or perhaps posters or vintage advertising call to you?

Attendees interested in entertainment will enjoy the fair’s selections of original movie scripts, manuscripts, and music scores. Photographers will appreciate the daguerreotypes, stereoviews, cabinet cards, and photos for sale. Other areas include broadsides, maps, catalogs, and design related materials, among practically countless others. “Even people who don’t ‘officially’ collect ephemera will love this event. And odds are, they will leave with at least one item that catches their fancy,” said show producer Marvin Getman. “Walking through this fair is a walk through history. Showgoers get to see how people lived before the digital age - long before smartphones and computers shaped the way people define friends, correspondence, and communication.” The Hyatt Regency Greenwich is located at 1800 East Putnam Avenue. Show hours on Saturday will be from

10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The hotel offers free parking. Tickets at the door for the twoday event will be $14 for adults. College students with ID and children under 18 will be admitted free of charge with a paid adult. For discount twoday tickets or half price Sunday only tickets, visit www.bookandpaperfairs.com/ ephemera-fair. This event is held in conjunction with the Ephemera Society of America’s annual convention, titled “Ephemera36.” This year’s theme is “Politics, Patriotism & Protest,” and examines the use of ephemera in promoting political, patriotic, and protest movements, emphasizing issues as race, gender, and war. For further information on Ephemera36, visit www.ephe merasociety.org. For further information on the Ephemera Fair, call Marvin Getman at 781-862-4039.
