As the summer rolls on, we take a look this month at one of the most active lasting summer Chautauqua communities in the nation, Mount Gretna in Lebanon County, Pa. Popular in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, these “movements” or “assemblies” promoted cultural education centered around music, lectures, religion, theater, and more. The summer retreat community of Mount Gretna has a varied history and remains relevant through its theater and music programs and annual summer Outdoor Arts Show. In this particular story of Mount Gretna, we examine the unique area through the medium of vintage postcards.

MOUNT GRETNA: PENNSYLVANIA CHAUTAUQUA A Short History And Exploration Through Postcards In 1889, iron foundry heir Robert Coleman had a narrow gauge rail line built to carry visitors around the lake and up to the top of what is today the Clarence Schock Memorial Park at Governor Dick Hill. Today, the area is an 1,105-acre stewardship forest and nature center where naturalist and Scout programs are held along with guided hikes. In the early 20th century, the “woodland park” expanded as the number of visitors increased, eventually housing a dancing pavilion, carousel, roller coaster, and various other amusement attractions. The Pennsylvania Chautauqua in “Gretna” was formed in 1892 by the Methodists and modeled after the famous New York state institution of 1874. An auditorium for concerts, lectures and religious services was constructed, and summer cottages quickly followed. The United Brethren also built a tabernacle across Pinch Road for their services and

Mount Gretna has been a popular summer destination since the late 19th century. Situated in Lebanon County, Pa., the region was once a dense forest of chestnut trees. In earlier times, the expansive forest provided charcoal for the nearby Cornwall Furnace that once forged canons for Washington’s Army during the Revolution. In 1885, the Conewago Creek was dammed, and Lake Conewago was formed for ideal swimming conditions, enhancing its recreational appeal. Also, in 1885, the Pennsylvania National Guard began a 50year annual encampment in the area, and a military branch post office operated for a short time (the Guard left in 1933). The regrown region quickly became regarded as a summer picnic and get-away locale. President Benjamin Harrison reportedly once enjoyed the woodland where Mount Gretna is today.

meetings. The growth of “camp meeting” over time as a summer retreat, especially for church conferences, led to establishments such as the Chautauqua Inn, The Conewago Hotel (often referred to Hotel Conewago), Kaufman’s Store and Hotel, and the Jigger Shop Ice Cream Parlor. (Continued on page 5)

MOUNT GRETNA (Continued from page 4)

Much of the growth halted even prior to the Depression due to changes in the nation’s mobility in part brought on by the automobile. The Conewago Hotel constructed in 1909 had 125 rooms and was one of the nation’s first inns to offer telephones in rooms along with private baths. It was torn down in 1940. The Chautauqua Inn was shuttered and torn down in 1970. The revival of Mount Gretna took place around the time of the country’s Bicenntenial. The theater and music programs are active today, as is the historical society. The area continues to experience an ever-growing year-round population, and seasonal residents from urban centers, noteably Washington, D.C., and Philadelphia, fuel a healthy real estate

market. Also, with the help of a nationally ranked juried art show held annually, the area’s arts and culture has flourished. This year’s Outdoor Arts Show will be held Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 15 and 16. To learn more, visit www.mtgretnaarts.com. The lake and beach are privately owned and offer various recreational opportunities and picnic facilities (www.mtgretna lake.com). The professional theater continues to produce a full slate of shows (www.gretnatheatre.com), and the previously mentioned Jigger Shop also remains a mainstay business. Of course, this is just a very short overview of the varied history of this unique area. To learn more, read Jack Bitner’s book, titled “Mt. Gretna, A Coleman Legacy” and visit the Mount Gretna Area Historical Society located at

Papermania Plus: A Unique Nostalgic Collectible Extravaganza Papermania Plus has run continuously since 1975 at the same location (the XL Center was formerly the Hartford Civic Center). “Papermania is a fun show for the serious collector and for young people at

heart,” said show producer Gary Gipstein. Buy Back a Memory continues to be the show’s theme. “A show of this sort is an invitation to an old-fashioned swap session,” said Gipstein. Unique paper collectibles, such as family games, postcards, prints and rare books are available at this show, and prices can start as low as 50 cents. Popular material to be offered includes Mickey Mouse and Disney characters, political buttons and posters, movie star and comic premiums, 19th century broadsides, advertising trade cards, celebrity autographs, early railroad ephemera, train schedules, stereo view cards and stock certificates, to just name a few things. The following Papermania Plus show is scheduled for Jan. 9 and 10, 2016. For more information, call show manager Arlene Shea at 860-563-9975 or visit www.papermaniaplus.com. Co-producers Gary Gipstein and his mother, Arlene Shea, will be celebrating the 40th anniversary year of Papermania Plus on Aug. 22 and 23 at the XL Center in Hartford, Conn.

Gateway Post Card Club Will Host 40th Annual Show Popular Annual Event Will Take Place On Sept. 4 And 5 The Gateway Post Card Club was founded on Jan. 7, 1974, at the Kirkwood Community Center in St. Louis, Mo., which is where the club continues to hold monthly meetings. In addition to buying and selling postcards, the meetings have always featured a presentation by a club member or outside speaker, or an occasional postcard auction. Membership (including spouse) is $10 a year and entitles the member to a July potluck luncheon, the December holiday party, a quarterly newsletter and early admission to the annual show. This year, another milestone will be achieved as the

Gateway Post Card Club will celebrate the 40th consecutive annual postcard show, which will be held over Labor Day weekend on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 4 and 5. The show will feature 26 dealers and will again be held at the convenient, spacious, and well-lighted VFW Hall at 1234 Vandalia St. (Hwy 159) in Collinsville, Ill., just east of Interstate 55/70. This has been the show site since 1992 and is 15 minutes from the landmark St. Louis Gateway Arch. The hours will be from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Friday and from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday. The club is proud of the outstanding reputation that its

show has achieved as being one of the top shows in the Midwest region. The Gateway Post Card Club show is one of the few that offers free admission, ample free parking, free appraisals, and several daily attendance prizes. There is also delicious food available onsite, and reasonably priced motels are nearby. Customers will find an excellent mix of material and knowledgeable dealers to accommodate all ranges of collectors, whether a veteran, a beginner, or just someone who wants to know more about the great postcard hobby. With the thousands of postcards that will be

available, all price ranges will be represented, and cards from vintage to modern, as well as postcard collecting supplies and reference books, will be available. There will also be postcard exhibits for the showgoers’ viewing pleasure. For the past 13 years, this show has been under the leadership of Tom and Pat Snyder, who, with the assistance of several Gateway Post Card Club members, have made the popular annual event a huge success. For additional information about the show or club, call Tom and Pat Snyder at 618-531-4189 or e-mail the.snyders@charter.net.

Book MLK Jr. Signed And Inscribed To U.S. Chief Justice Earl Warren Sells For $49,335 Historical First Edition Had Remained In Warren Family’s Personal Library Since 1959 A hardcover first edition of “Stride Toward Freedom” that its author, the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., signed and personally inscribed to Chief Justice Earl Warren, made a powerful statement of its own on July 14 when it sold for $49,335. The historically important book was the centerpiece of the political memorabilia section in a two-day Internet auction conducted by Hake’s Americana of York, Pa. Competition for the book ran through the night and into the early hours. When the last of 11 bids was accepted as final, the book had well surpassed its presale estimate of $20,000-$35,000. Published in late 1958, the book was signed by King and given to Warren as a personal gift a few months later, in early 1959. Warren’s leadership was widely credited in the Supreme Court’s 1954 unanimous decision on Brown v. Board of Education, the landmark bill that banned segregation in public schools. In a bold hand, King inscribed the book: “To

Justice Earl Warren, In appreciation for your genuine good-will, your great humanitarian concern, and your unswerving devotion to the sublime principles of our American democracy. With warm

Regards, Martin L. King Jr.” After Warren’s death in 1974, the book remained in the Warren family’s personal library until its consignment to Hake’s auction. “The price paid for the book did not surprise us. It is a historic artifact of the highest magnitude and truly a one-of-akind piece,” said Alex Winter, president of Hake’s Americana. “Both men associated with the book were integral figures in the Civil Rights Movement, and the importance of their legacy cannot be overstated. For this important work of literature to be signed by the author, Dr. King, to Chief Justice Warren places it in its own stratosphere when compared to other MLK Jr. signed pieces, or any artifact associated with social consciousness, for that matter,” said Winter. Winter noted that the buyer wishes to remain anonymous. For more information, visit www.hakes.com.

1844 Political Banner Sets World Record At Heritage Auctions An outstandingly preserved, handpainted, double-sided jugate banner from the 1844 Presidential campaign of James K. Polk sold for $185,000 and claimed the world record as the most valuable piece of political memorabilia ever sold at public auction in Heritage Auctions’ June 27 presentation of the Merrill C. Berman collection, part II. The banner took top lot honors amid more than 350 lots that realized $756,178 and recorded a sell-through rate exceeding 98 percent by value. “Simply, this is the finest political banner known to exist and fully deserving of a new world record,” said Tom Slater, director of Americana Auctions at Heritage Auctions. “Not only is this banner historically important to early American political campaigns, it is a true work of art unique in the world of Americana memorabilia and American folk art,” said Slater. The auction represented just the second time the banner has been seen publically in more than 30 years. It was first shown

publicly when it graced the cover of the catalog for the 1984 exhibition of items from the Berman collection at the Hudson River Museum. The 171-yearold banner spans 76-by75-inches, and its colors and portraits of Polk and running mate George M. Dallas remain vivid and vibrant. A second banner in the auction is also from the 1844 election and featured Polk in addition to his opponent Henry Clay. The handpainted scene depicted Clay giving Polk a sound drubbing below a soaring eagle holding a banner reading “Protective Tariff,” an issue central to Clay’s campaign. The banner sold for $31,250. A large, “pewter rim” engraved portrait of Andrew Jackson under glass sold for $20,000 against a $2,500 estimate. Although quite prolific at the time, few

remain, and larger specimens such as this one, measuring a full 94 millimeters in diameter, are highly sought-after by collectors of pre-Civil War political and presidential memorabilia. A classic Abraham Lincoln ambrotype brooch by George Clark, perhaps one of the most famous of all photographic political badges of all time, quickly surpassed its $5,000 pre-auction estimate to end at $16,250. The storied Berman collection of pinbacks once again lived up to its reputation as a jugate of Cox and Roosevelt, referred to as the iconic “Americanize America” button, sold for $20,000 despite some minor condition issues. A rare jugate pinback of Davis and Bryan, the Democratic ticket who lost badly to Coolidge and Dawes in 1924, sold for $18,750, and a stunningly vibrant jugate by American Artworks of Coshocton, Ohio, featuring Wilson and Marshall brought $11,875.
