To remember this important world event, Saul Zalesch examines an extensive array of ephemera associated with WWI. The printing and publishing industry was booming during this period in the nation’s history, as Zalesch shows in his article looking into numerous publications associated with what historians consider the first total war of the modern era. Also in this issue is a short piece titled “Special Delivery” on the folklore connection between newborns and storks by Bob Dissinger. It is illustrated with postcards from the author’s collection.

“The summer of 2014” marked the 100th anniversary of the outbreak of first World War (WWI). Nations around the world are commemorating the centenary event by recognizing the effects it had globally. Armistice was reached in the fall of 1918, but Western civilization and modern warfare were forever altered following the “Great War.”

Ephemera Of World War I By Saul Zalesch

World War I should never have happened. This tragedy of errors, with few parallels in history, showcased incompetence and miscalculation. Its resolution, moreover, all but guaranteed World War II. The 100th anniversary of the Great War’s start in late July 1914 warrants surveying ephemera that document America’s role before we entered the war, as well as while fighting and in the aftermath. In 1915 most Americans strongly opposed intervention. The song “I Didn’t Raise My Boy to Be a Soldier” (shown trimmed) was so popular that one finds copies of it in most boxes of large-sized (pre-1920) music. Copies exist with overprinted photos of dozens of performers, including one Chief Tendehoa. As neutrals, Americans received propagandistic pictures from both sides. The Larkin Company’s “Battle Album Pictures of the Great European War” printed 90 small scenes, all in color, probably supplied by the combatants. If, a year later, an American favored intervention, he or she would be more likely to help Germany and the Central Powers than England and the Allies. A pamphlet set forth, “Some Things the Germans Have Done for the United States,” asked bluntly “What Have the English Done for Us?” It concluded with the promise that “Ireland Will be Free When the English Speak Dutch.” A lavishly illustrated

An Examination On The 100th Anniversary Of The War To End All Wars guidebook/program accompanied the “Charity Bazar for the Widows and Orphans of German, Austrian, Hungarian, and their Allied Soldiers,” which was held at Madison Square Garden from March 11 to 23, 1916. Its text is partly in German, partly in English, and it included numerous photos of the German-Americans staging the benefit. Interestingly, considering what would soon happen in Germany, and among German-Americans, Gentiles and Jews cooperated easily in the project. The guidebook preserves diagrams of the bazaar layout and so much else. Numerous impressive ads include a full-page for Anheuser Busch. Bitter

anti-German sentiment during the fighting surely caused many owners to destroy these suddenly subversive documents. Like other Americans, they quickly took up the Allied cause, and by 1919 Schmidts were subscribing “toward the erection of the Arch of Freedom in the City of New York sacred to the memory of Our Boys . . .” Wartime ephemera is as varied as any collector could hope: from a Draft Board notification in Arcadia, La., to the deluxe souvenir program in full color that accompanied D. W. Griffith’s war epic “Hearts of the World.” It can be as serious and informative as the souvenir catalogue for the “United States and Allied Governments War Exposition” held in Cleveland, Ohio, Nov. 16-24, 1918 or as ridiculous and ribald as “The Life & Death of the Kaiser,” by Brainless Bates. Civilians were asked to identify with the experience of a recruit in the United States Army. Servicemen were

instructed “Where to Go and What to Do in New York City if You Are a Soldier, Sailor or Marine.” The Northern Baptist Laymen’s “Victory Campaign,” Dec. 1, 1918, to Feb. 15, 1919, stated, under the heading “Christ’s Army of Victory,” “If we can put millions of men upon the field of battle, we ought to be able to put at least (Continued on page 5)

thousands of men and women on the mission field.” Dr. Jayne’s “How to Knit” taught novices “to make those garments herein described in a manner acceptable to the National Red Cross Society for distribution to our soldiers and sailors” (such work soon became comic fodder, as in Al Jolson’s “Sister Susie’s Sewing Shirts for Soldiers”). Sarah Bernhardt made her “Last Visit to America” in 1917-18 partly to appear at war rallies encouraging support for the Allies. The YMCA issued numerous booklets for servicemen: “Don’t Take a Chance” urged them to protect their wives, sweethearts, and children by avoiding prostitutes. Children reading the November 1917 St.

Nicholas Magazine learned from Captain Tick-Mouse (representing Elgin Watches) to “Serve America First.” One of many Captain Tick-Mouse booklets warned that “Time will win the war. Don’t waste it!” Corporate house organs like the Indiana Lumbermens Mutual Insurance Co.’s “Burning Question and the Submarine Boat Corp.’s SpeedUp” rallied support for war efforts and promised bright futures. Swift & Co.’s “Buzzer” even provided a breakdown by rank and branch of service of its 6,843 ex-employees under arms, including Maj. Charles H. Swift, assigned to the Ordnance Department in Washington, D.C. (No other Swift employee had a rank higher than Capt.). Service for ex-employees ranged from Ice Plant (48) and Veterinary (nine) to Radio (three) and Balloon (seven). Like most house organs it pushed bond sales, in this case the “Fourth Liberty Loan.” Stehli Silks Corp.’s “Our Patriots Herald” listed on the back cover employees in service; it elsewhere gives a breakdown of bond-selling in the company, totaling more than $31,899. Feeding soldiers, the homefront, and the Allies was a major concern. The “Win the War Issue” of the Home Cow Doctor had farmers vowing “Go Ahead Uncle Sam I’ll Back You Up with Food.” The National War Garden Commission and local counterparts promoted Victory Gardens. The 1919 Victory Edition of its “War Gardening”

uses James Montgomery Flagg imagery. This copy was sent out by a Congressman. Homemakers were urged to preserve and can foods. A booklet advertising Kold-Pak Jar Rubbers begins “The Government is advocating that all housewives should can vegetables . . .” The Community Motion Picture Bureau is almost forgotten today, but, according to Wikipedia, it “would supply about 4,000 picture shows a week to YMCA, Red Cross, Salvation Army, Jewish Welfare Board, Knights of Columbus or any other accredited organization supplying entertainment for troops” (quoting Lee Shippey, “Luckiest Man Alive” (1959): 65-66). They even developed a “projecting machine that put pictures on the ceiling so that injured soldiers could watch films from their hospital cots.” Its library sticker on the booklet “The New World Illustrated” is the only documentary trace of it I have encountered. Financing the war kept printing presses busy. War Taxes 1917 spelled out new taxes, including: War Income, War Excess Profits, War Taxes on Beverages and Tobacco, War Tax on Issuance of Insurance, War Excise Tax, War Tax on Admissions and Dues, War Stamp Tax, and the War Estate Tax. The excise tax covered automobiles and motorcycles; musical instruments; moving picture films; jewelry; sporting goods; perfumes, cosmetics, etc.; proprietary medicines; chewing gum; cameras; and pleasure boats. The War Estate Tax started at half of one percent under $50,000 and climbed to 10 percent over

$10,000,000. War relief funds arose in most cities. The stock company of the LULU Masonic Temple performed “Scheherezade” as a benefit for Philadelphia’s Metropolitan Opera House. Rallies in cities big and small attracted movie stars, statesmen, and servicemen promoting sales of Liberty Bonds and War Savings Certificates. When fighting concluded (Continued on page 8)

Special Delivery! The History Of The Connection Between Newborns And Storks By Bob Dissinger

The idea of storks delivering newborn babies possibly originated in Scandinavia hundreds of years ago. The storks just dropped them down the flue of the chimney. Longnecked and related to the heron, storks generally nest in trees, but on occasion have taken up chimneys and roofs as nesting spots. In Roman times, if a stork built a nest on your roof, it

was seen as a blessing and a promise of never-ending love from Venus. Aristotle made killing a stork a crime. The fairy tale titled “The Storks” was written in 1838 by Hans Christian Anderson. The souls of unborn children were once believed to live

www.paperandadvertisingcollector.com in marshes and ponds, which were visited by storks. It was said that the birds picked up the babies and delivered them to their expectant parents. Some people believed a stork could cause a woman to become pregnant just by looking at her. can be found in the mythologies Storks are considered harbingers of Greek, Egyptian, of good fortune. In Germany, Scandinavian or Norse, they are known as (Continued on page 7) an “adebar,” meaning “Luck-bringer.” Other stories about storks

the U. S. Army demobilized quickly. Soldiers kept in Europe found diversion at YMCAs, which staged a Rhine Panorama “for the men of the American Army of Occupation.” Cities held huge victory parades for returning divisions, regiments, and generals. They erected great monuments, including memorial buildings, to the war but quickly forgot servicemen as the country slipped into a short but vicious Depression, (such neglect is re-enacted in the film “The Roaring Twenties” of 1939). Employers were supposed to hold jobs open for exemployees but found many ways to keep now-experienced workers in place. Benefits for servicemen, even the disabled, were miniscule. Not until 1924, after several vetoes, did Congress grant veterans a bonus, to be paid in 1945! It was the forcible dispersion of veterans gathered in Washington in 1932, seeking early payment of this bonus, that permanently blighted the

reputations of Gen. Douglas MacArthur and President Hoover. A few servicemen selfpublished memoirs and histories, such as Private Roy Baldridge’s “I Was There.” Some started businesses using war surplus equipment like that offered by Harold Surgical Corp.’s “Half-Million-DollarSale.” Others banded together in groups like The Buck Privates Society, in Chicago, Ill., to seek dignified treatment of ex-soldiers. Enlisted men at Fort Sheridan, Ill., lobbied while still in uniform for six months pay for wounded soldiers. Many vets sold magazines and booklets they published collectively. I have quite a few of these, dating well into the 1930s. The most unusual are “Veterans Life” and “Lafs and Doughboys’ Fun and Facts.” Their vendors, many doubtless diagnosable today with post-traumatic symptoms, were the last immediate victims of America’s stint in World War I.

The Ninth Annual Nostalgia Convention Will Be Held Sept. 18 To 20 In Hunt Valley, Md. “We have a responsibility to both the Hollywood celebrities and the vendors selling vintage collectibles,” said Martin Grams, events coordinator for the Mid-Atlantic Nostalgia Convention (MANC), a threeday non-profit film festival featuring over 200 vendor tables of nostalgic merchandise. Vendors come from all over the country, Grams explained, which is why he believes his main agenda is to have larger attendance every year. So far, that record has been strong. Attendance figures have grown between 27 and 33 percent from previous years. This year marks the ninth annual event, and advance ticket sales have already broken last year’s record. This year’s convention will be held at the Hunt Valley Wyndham in Hunt Valley, Md., from Thursday to Saturday, Sept. 18 to 20. “Our goal is for attendees to have a good time, watch a

couple rare old movies in the movie room, attend a few slideshow seminars, get a few autographs with celebrities, and exchange deals with the vendors,” said Michelle Vinje, staff. “Whether they buy, sell, or trade old memorabilia, the

attendees have a grand time. And I believe the seminars are among the highlights of the weekend. Everyone learns a few things they didn’t know about vintage pop culture that gives them deeper appreciation for the retro subjects.” Last

year attendees were treated to a history of Dick Tracy in comic strips, motion-pictures, and television. Charlie Chan, Buck Rogers, James Bond, The Man From U.N.C.L.E., vintage old time radio premiums, The Lone Ranger, and The Green Hornet have been subjects of past seminars. Celebrities are flown in from all over the world to meet and greet fans, sign autographs, and pose for photographs. Ed Asner, Patty Duke, Lee Meriwether, Julie Newmar, Shirley Jones, David Hedison, Celeste Holm, Davy Jones, and many other legends of stage and screen have donated their time at MANC. This year’s guests include Lana Wood (Bond girl from “Diamonds Are Forever”), George Lazenby (James Bond himself), Peggy King (famous singer), Veronica (“Alien” and A charity auction offering a variety of collectibles to help benefit the Cartwright St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital will be held at the MidAtlantic Nostalgia Convention in Maryland from Sept. 18 to 20.

“Daniel Boone”), Angela Cartwright (“The Sound Of Music” and “Lost In Space”), Lee Meredith (“The Producers”), Josip Elic (“The Twilight Zone” and “One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest”), and screen legend Piper Laurie. More stars will be announced on the convention website. A charity auction to help benefit the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital offers a variety of collectibles at varied prices. “Many celebrities who cannot travel to shows like ours donate signed photos and books. Those raise a lot of money for children with treatable cancer,” Grams explains. “The biggest highlight was the year we had a signed glossy from Elizabeth Taylor. She mailed it to us too late and it arrived a day after the show. So we put it in storage for next year’s auction. Soon after, she passed away. We don’t usually provide the mailing envelope that comes with the donation but in that case we made an exception. After all, what could they do? It turned out to have been one of the last autographs she ever gave before she passed away.” Vendors sell a wide range of memorabilia including old

magazines, movie posters, lobby cards, glossy photos, antique toys, sports memorabilia, sheet music, LP records, Tshirts, books, DVDs, VHS videos, cereal box premiums, and just about anything else you would expect to find at a show like this. “Last year someone had an autograph of Harry Houdini on a contract or application and to verify it was he who signed it, a notary public endorsed the signature. The autograph was 100 percent authentic. It was framed with a photo of Houdini. Months later someone told me that if I ever come across a Harry Houdini autograph, to contact him. I told him about the one at MANC and he flipped. One with a notary public endorsement? Absolutely rare. I told him where it was sold, and his remark to me was, ‘Oh, I didn’t know that convention had vendors selling that kind of merchandise.’ Seems he never had a positive impression of a show he never attended. I suspect he will be there this year just to see what treasures are being offered on the vendor tables.” For directions and further information, call 443-286-6821 or visit, www.midatlantic nostalgiaconvention.com.
