Unrestored Copy Of Batman #1 Brings $237,300 At Philip Weiss Auctions The Copy Of Batman #1 Was A Record For Its 7.5 Grade but it was a record for the comic graded at 7.5. And considering it was only estimated to bring $100,000-$150,000 to begin with, the final hammer price came as a pleasant surprise. “It sold to two men in the room who were delighted to have scored such a rare comic in any condition,” stated Philip Weiss of Philip Weiss Auctions. The two buyers turned out to be Stephen Fishler and Vincent Zurzolo, the owners of Metropolis Collectibles, a firm that made the news last year when they paid the most ever for a comic book: $3.2 million, for a CGC-certified 9.0 copy of Action Comics #1 (the first comic book appearance of Superman). The men expressed confidence that the value of the Batman #1 will only escalate. By contrast, a copy of Batman #2, from summer 1940, was also offered, with a far superior grade of 9.2 out of 10. But because it was #2, not #1, it was considered less desirable, it brought $39,550 (within the pre-sale estimate of $30,000-$50,000). That was still a nice payday for the seller, and a nice coup for the buyer, but it gives an This copy of Batman No. 2, from idea as to how wildly comic summer 1940, graded a near-mint 9.2 prices can vary. out of 10, fetched $39,550. Two other comics also fared well. One was a copy of Adventure Comics #40 (first appearance of the character Sandman, considered a rare book). It went for $25,990 (against a pre-sale estimate of $20,000-$40,000). The other was a copy of Action Comics #23, the first appearance of Lex

David Ganse Of Adamstown Books Opens Retail Location At The Lancaster Theological Seminary Special Open House Is Planned For May 1 And 2 By Karl Pass

The Lark Building on the Lancaster Theological Seminary campus was constructed in 1894 after the school moved to Lancaster from Mercersburg. Until the building’s completion, classes were held on the Franklin & Marshall campus in what is now known as Old Main. The Campus Center or Mayer Commons, home of Adamstown Books, is adjoined to the left when coming from College Avenue.

David Ganse of Adamstown Books opened a retail location at Lancaster Theological Seminary five months ago. Located at 555 James St., the small, quaint, and well-stocked bookstore is situated in the Mayer Commons building on the Lancaster campus. A prime example of what an independent bookstore should look like, the venue is a great addition to Lancaster city and boasts an array of material in many subject areas. The store will hold a special MultiDealer Collector’s Open House on Friday and Saturday, May 1 and 2, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Storewide discounts on books will be offered and other vendors with be set up with vintage cookbooks, paper advertising, postcards, movie posters, and maps. Light refreshments will be provided. For the entire month of May, Adamstown Books will offer a 20 percent discount to anyone who mentions or

Adamstown Books building, which is often called Mayer Commons. The site can be accessed either from College Avenue or James Street and was built in 1916-17. It used to be referred to as the Library Annex since the original school library was housed in the main building, which is now called the Lark Academic Building. The new Philip Schaff Library was constructed in 1968 and renovated in 1997. “We are very conscious to have books at every price point,” commented Ganse. His four main targeted markets involve the Seminary, Franklin & Marshall College, Lancaster city, and the broader collecting community. All are important to reach noted Ganse. A worker in the transportation industry for 20 years up until the economic downturn, Ganse took a chance and changed careers. “I had been wanting to get into the bookselling business,” he said. When Cokesbury, a national publishing chain affliated with the United Methodist Church closed its brick and mortar stores and left the Seminary campus in 2013, an opportunity opened up for Ganse. “The administration was eager to have a bookstore again,” said Ganse, who was at that time a bookseller specializing in Civil War material at several co-ops in Adamstown, Pa. (where he still maintains a presence). Ganse has been in the German Trading Post co-op since the fall of 2012 and Mother Tucker’s co-op since the spring of 2014. Boltz Auction Company Unearths Trove Of Golden Age Comics Lancaster, Pa., Firm Sets House Record With Two-Part Sale A single owner lifetime collection of 3,000 Golden Age comic books recently saw the light of day for the first time in over 60 years when sold by the Boltz Auction Company of Lancaster, Pa. The two-part auction brought a house record

$110,000 in gross sales. The in-house portion of the sale consisted of 150 uncataloged lots. It was held on Jan. 26, at the Boltz Auction Center and drew a small crowd of avid collectors and dealers from several states. The lots consisted of 20 books

each and sold, on average, for between $200 and $300, doubling and tripling their presale estimates. Several lots surpassed the $500 mark. The online portion of the sale, which was handled through Invaluable/AuctionZip with exposure on eBay, consisted of 446 lots and closed on Jan. 30. Online bidding had opened on Jan. 16, and a live online auction began at noon on Jan. 30. The gross total was $82,500. The extensive collection

consisted of comics mainly from the 1930s and 1940s, and most remained in very good condition. The collection had been unknown among the collecting community. “We were called to the house, and they were stored in wooden shipping crates in the basement,” said Shane Gehman of the Boltz Auction Company. It is believed they had been stored there for roughly 60 years. “A number of collectors have been asking us the name of the collection, and we (Continued on page 14)

Comics And Comic Art Bring $3.22+ Million At Heritage Auctions In New York Restored Detective Comics #27 Brings $98,587 Action Comics #10 (DC, 1939), CGC 3.0, featuring just the third cover appearance of Superman, hit $23,900. A selection of original art was led by Frank Frazetta’s scintillating depiction of Ghost Rider for the cover of Tim Holt #17 (Marvel Enterprises, 1950), which sold for $71,700 following interest from 13 bidders. The Ghost Rider character was so popular he would eventually morph into not one, but two different Marvel Comics characters, but his character was not the only notable figure on the cover. Frazetta was a fan of actor Victor Mature and the artist used his likeness for the bound figure on the cover. The work of dynamic duo Frank Miller and Klaus Janson generated intense bidder interest as their original cover art for Daredevil #186 (Marvel, 1982), an iconic image of the title character falling to his impending

doom, sold for $38,240. Miller and Janson’s original art for page 44 from Batman: The Dark Knight Returns #2 (DC, 1986) sold for $33,460. Curt Swan’s and George Klein’s original cover art for Action Comics #350 (DC, 1967), a timeless cover that represents the camp of 1960s-era Superman, sold for $35,850. Todd McFarlane’s original cover art for Marvel Tales #234 (Marvel, 1990), featuring not only Spider-Man but members of the X-Men, sold for $31,070, and Barry Smith’s memorable splash page of Logan/Wolverine as Weapon X as seen on page 4 of Marvel Comics Presents #78 (Marvel, 1991) also brought $31,070. Original art from newspaper comic strips saw interest from multiple bidders as the handcolored original art for a Krazy Kat Sunday comic strip dated (Continued on page 13)

1939), the first appearance of Batman, graded 7.5 CGC restored, sold for $98,587, while a copy of Batman #1 (DC, 1940), CGC 4.5, sold for $77,675. The three-day event was held Feb. 19 to 21 in New York. The selection of classic high-grade comics and original art of notable characters was 97 percent sold by lot and 99 percent sold by value. “Fresh material always gets attention, and the likes of neverbefore-offered Bernie Wrightson stories and Bill Everett art made for a lot of interest on lot-viewing day (as well as) strong bidding,” said Barry Sandoval, director of comics operations at Heritage. High-grade comics included a copy of Fantastic Four #1 (Marvel, 1961), CBCS 8.5, A copy of Detective Comics #27 which sold for $65,725, and a (DC, 1939), the first appearance copy of All Star Comics #8, of Batman, graded 7.5 CGC CGC 5.0, which ended at $28,680. In addition, a copy of restored, sold for $98,587.
