INSIDE THIS ISSUE

As we embark upon a new calendar year, we examine several important auctions, fairs, and exhibitions in this issue. From Feb. 12 through 14, the popular California International Antiquarian Book Fair will take place. This year, the book fair will include a special exhibit celebrating the 150th Anniversary of “Alice in Wonderland.” On Dec. 8, 2015, Swann Galleries Map department held its first million-dollar auction. Among the market leaders in cartography, Swann old Meriwether Lewis and William Clark’s “History of the Expedition under the Command of Captains Lewis and Clark,” New York, 1814, detailing their famed exploration of the western United States, for $52,500. Currently on view, through March 20, the New-York Historical Society, in partnership with the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History, is presenting a special installation featuring photographs taken by both Japanese pilots and U.S. Navy personnel, as well as other artifacts that bring America’s entry into World War II into stark view. “Witnesses to History: Pearl Harbor” includes a rare copy of the Imperial Rescript Declaring War on the U.S. and Great Britain. It is one of 12 known to exist. The 74th anniversary of the Pearl Harbor attack was marked on Dec. 7, 2015. Of course, there is much more, including information on numerous shows and auctions. Until next month,

Movie Posters Found Under Floor Bring $219,000 Posters Were Hidden For 60 Years A stash of rare movie posters discovered under a linoleum floor in York County, Pa., sold for a combined $219,000 in Heritage Auctions’ Vintage Poster Auction on Nov. 21 and 22 in Dallas, Texas. The $2+ million auction offered seldom seen rarities from Hollywood’s golden age of film and poster art. Collectors especially eyed the grouping of neverbefore-seen posters hidden away for more than 60 years. Owner Robert Basta said the trove will fund his retirement nest egg. “You always hear about these stories, and I never believed it would happen to our family,” Basta said following the auction. “We are beyond thrilled with the results. We feel truly blessed.” The stash was discovered when Basta’s sons, Bob and Dylan, removed a dated linoleum floor during a renovation project at their home. Underneath were the posters. “The discovery uncovered the only-known surviving examples of five rare posters, making them true pieces of Hollywood history,” said Grey Smith, director of vintage posters at Heritage. One-of-a-kind posters saw intense bidder interest as a Style D one-sheet poster for “Tarzan the Ape Man” (MGM, 1932) sold for $83,650; the only known onesheet poster for “Any Old Port,” a 1932 MGM short starring the comedy duo Laurel and Hardy, sold for $8,962; and the

only known one-sheet poster for Clark Gable’s first starring role in “Sporting Blood” (MGM, 1931) sold for $2,987. The stash also held a movie poster for MGM’s

1932 bad-girl classic “Red Headed Woman,” which sold for $77,675, and a one-sheet poster for “Doctor X” (First National, 1932), which sold for $23,900. “Collectors and historians didn’t know some of these posters existed before this discovery,” said Smith. “Rare finds are still out there, and you never know when a missing piece of history will be filed in.” The auction also fetched top prices for rare, pre-war releases for classics such as an Italian two-foglio poster for “Casablanca” (Warner Brothers, 1948), which sold for $95,600, and a window card for “Frankenstein” (Universal, 1931), which sold for $89,625. A Swedish oversized poster for “King Kong” (RKO, 1933) brought $31,070. A one-sheet for the 1927 Universal short “Oswald the Lucky Rabbit in Great Guns!,” a rare cartoon by Walt Disney, sold for $37,045 against an $8,000 estimate. An unusual, studio-issued cloth banner for “The Batman” (Columbia, 1943) sold for $26,290 against a $5,000 estimate. A one-sheet for “Little Rural Riding Hood” (MGM, 1949), the last in the series of Tex Avery’s “Red Hot Riding Hood” cartoons, sold for $16,730 against a $6,000 estimate. Stunning sci-fi and monster movie posters saw intense bidder interest, as a one-sheet for “Creature From the Black (Continued on page 7)

Exhibit To Honor “The Spirit” Creator Will Eisner

As well as touching on humor, Will Eisner’s cover for Will Eisner’s Quarterly #4 showcased his ability to highlight the most human and even wistful moments of a story, a talent often on display in his many graphic novels.

Eisner’s pioneering work in the graphic-novel format. Completely unprecedented in its scope and content, the exhibition is timed to coincide with the Baltimore Comic-Con and Baltimore Book Fair so as many comic-art fans as possible can have access to the unique archive. “We think those attending the Baltimore show and the book fair will want to take advantage of this unusual

Will Eisner never hesitated to put other characters in the center of the action while putting “The Spirit” off to the side, as seen in this color cover for a 1991 Danish collection.

Quick Facts: This career-spanning show will be the largest Will Eisner art exhibition held during The Spirit’s 75th anniversary year. The show will include rare artifacts, some of which have never before been publicly shown. It is curated by Denis Kitchen, Eisner’s longtime publisher, agent and friend, with the full cooperation of the Eisner family. The show has strong Baltimore ties. “The Spirit” section appeared in Baltimore, Md., for its entire duration. Eisner also created a Baltimore Colts program cover, which will be in the display. The exhibition will open during the Baltimore Comic-Con and Baltimore Book Fair, with strong support from each venue. It is the latest in Geppi’s Entertainment Museum’s new series of major and mini comic-art exhibits. The Will Eisner Comic Industry Awards are named in his honor.

opportunity to view the genius of Will Eisner through his original art. His influence on future comic book creators and cartoonists was profound, and it also went far beyond his obvious artistic talent,” said Melissa Bowersox, president of Geppi’s Entertainment Museum. “When Mr. Eisner started in the business, comic book artists were not held in the same regard as comic strip artists. During the Depression, there were 12 comic strip millionaires, but that wasn’t the case for comic book creators. Eisner became a leading advocate for creator rights and graphic novels, and his impact is still being felt today,” said Bowersox. From June 2, 1940, to October 5, 1952, Will Eisner’s “The Spirit” appeared in a comic-book-size insert in local newspapers around the country, including Baltimore, Md. Noted for its inventiveness, wry send-ups of the superhero milieu, and its succinct, sevenpage lead stories, “The Spirit” featured a never-give-up title character, strong females ranging from childhood friends to femme fatales, and creatively designed title pages that worked the title into the art. Escaping from the perceived second-class world of comic-book art and into the lucrative world of comic strips, Eisner built “The Spirit” sections into a calling card and never looked back. Eisner introduced comics to the U.S. Army as an instructional tool for vehicle maintenance (in P.S. Magazine), presently adapted his work to a graphic-novel format with “A Contract With God” (and many others), and taught at New

York’s School of Visual Arts. He remained vibrant and fully (Continued on page 7)

Frequently finding humor in situations ranging from the routine to the absurd, Will Eisner drew “The Spirit” illustrating a headshot of Eisner himself.

This original interior page from “The Spirit” showcases Eisner’s abilities with humor, storytelling and perspective even within the confines of a standard page layout.

Recognized as one of the world’s largest and most prestigious exhibitions of antiquarian books, the Book Fair gives visitors the opportunity to see, learn about and purchase the finest in rare and valuable books, manuscripts, autographs, graphics, photographs and more. The 2016 edition of the Book Fair will also include a special exhibit marking the 150th anniversary of the publication of Lewis Carroll’s “Alice in Wonderland.” Featuring the collections and rare treasures of 200 booksellers from the Antiquarian Booksellers’ Association of America and the International League of Antiquarian Booksellers, the Book Fair will present volumes from five centuries of printing, as well as original manuscripts that predate Gutenberg. Books will cover every imaginable area of interest, from the history of travel and exploration, early science and medicine to classic literature, modern first editions, children’s and illustrated books, and the arts. Items will range in price from a few dollars to more than six figures. “The theme of the 2016 Fair is ‘A Wonderland of Books’ and it has dual meaning,” said Michael R. Thompson, Book Fair Chair of the Southern California Chapter of the ABAA, which organizes the event. “We’re inviting people to join us in celebrating ‘Alice in Wonderland’ arguably the world’s most influential children’s book and an iconic work that has inspired diverse writers, graphic artists, moviemakers and other creative voices over the last 150 years. But above all, to walk the aisles of the Fair is to enter a veritable wonderland of books where dealers from across the country and around the world offer up their most desirable and fascinating items for people to browse, touch

and even go home with.” The “Alice in Wonderland” special exhibit will feature books, illustrations, papers and original ephemera from the G. Edward Cassady, M.D. and Margaret Elizabeth Cassady, R.N., Lewis Carroll Collection at the University of Southern California Doheny Library. Prepare to be taken on an amazing journey into the world of Alice starting with Carroll’s manuscript, his drawings of “Alice” and a first edition of the classic, and continuing with fantastic collectors’ editions with illustrations by famed artists such as Salvador Dali, Mary Blair’s 1951 concept drawings for Walt Disney Studios and contemporary visions of Alice in comic books, Japanese Manga and even video games. Those who want to start their own “Alice” collections will find excellent opportunities to acquire items from individual dealers who will offer many different editions of the Carroll book as well as other “Wonderland” inspired works. The Book Fair is the perfect introduction for those new to the world of rare books and includes a seminar on the basics of collecting. Targeting the Army, Navy, and Marine airfields before bombing the Pacific Fleet at Pearl Harbor, the strike lasted nearly two hours and left 2,403 Americans dead and another 1,178 wounded. Within a day, the United States was officially at war. In commemoration of the events at Pearl Harbor, the NewYork Historical Society, in partnership with the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History, has presented a special installation featuring photographs taken by both Japanese pilots and U.S. Navy personnel, as well as other artifacts that bring America’s entry into World War II into stark view. On display at the society through Sunday, March 20, “Witnesses to History: Pearl Harbor” includes a rare copy of the Imperial Rescript Declaring War on the U.S. and Great Britain. It is one of 12 known to exist. Other objects on view include photos taken of Pearl Harbor in the first moments of the raid by Japanese pilots, as well as images captured by the U.S. Navy depicting the widespread damage of battleships, including the U.S.S. Arizona and Oklahoma, engulfed in flames and heavy smoke from torpedo and bomb damage. Also on display are letters from two New Yorkers who

joined the Army in the wake of the attack. Sidney Diamond gave up his college deferment and enlisted in April 1942. In a letter, Diamond described meeting a survivor from Pearl Harbor and learning about the true horrors of the attack. Brooklyn resident Moe Weiner, writing to his wife in 1944, realized it was the third anniversary of Pearl Harbor: “It hardly seems possible to believe that there ever was a time when things were any different and any other existence doesn’t have the ring of reality. Strange, isn’t it, how the abnormal state of affairs can become to be accepted as the normal.” These sentiments, continue to echo, more than 70 years later. Although the Japanese government had intended to deliver the declaration of war to the United States 30 minutes before the attack on Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941, the Japanese embassy in A U.S. Navy photograph of the U.S.S. two hours after the attack. The U.S.S. Arizona, hit with a bomb near her second turret, was among the deadliest causalities of Pearl Harbor. The explosion that followed killed more than 1,100 crew members on board. Because the attack was a surprise, only eight Army Air Force pilots managed to get into the air to defend Pearl Harbor. On the ground below, hundreds were trapped inside capsized ships, and more than 300 aircraft were severely damaged at Wheeler Airfield by Japanese bombers. Following the chaos of the attack, sailors from smaller ships attempted to extinguish the flames erupting from the sunken battleship West Virginia. Accompanying “Witnesses to History: Pearl Harbor” is an online exhibition featuring highresolution images, interactive maps, and more.
