In market news, Swann Galleries held a successful poster auction in December, which featured vintage travel posters from the Julius Paul collection. Also in December, Sotheby’s held a single-owner photography sale, setting a new world record for a photography auction. Famous photographer Alfred Stieglitz’s “Evening, New York from the Shelton” from 1931 sold for $929,000. Swann also sold an early photo booth self-portrait of Marilyn Monroe, silver print, circa 1940, to a collector for $18,750 in December. An unrestored copy of Action Comics #1 (DC, 1938), considered by most to be the most desirable comic book in the hobby, graded 3.0 by CGC, sold for $310,700 as the undisputed top lot in Heritage Auctions’ $7.17 million Comics and Comics Art Signature Auction in November. “High-end, vintage comic books across the board continue to show incredible market durability,” stated Ed Jaster, senior vice president at Heritage Auctions. These high profile auctions reflect a heightened strength in their respective specialized markets. Until next month, enjoy, and don’t forget to take a look at the loaded show calendar of events full of upcoming shows.

This month’s issue features William Felchner’s quarterly “Hollywood Archives” column, where he provides an examination of movie memorabilia involving the popular film “Ben-Hur.” The film came out in 1959 and is widely considered one the industry’s alltime greats.

“Ben-Hur”: The Might And Majesty Of Movie Memorabilia 1899 with William Farnum in the title role as Judah Ben-Hur. In 1907, the Kalem Company produced the first movie version of “Ben Hur,” a silent 15minute short made for $500. That was followed in 1925 by the famous $4 million silent blockbuster “Ben-Hur: A Tale of the Christ” starring Ramon Novarro, Francis X. Bushman and May McAvoy. MGM had always wanted to remake “Ben-Hur” for the sound cinema, but with the right director at the helm. The project finally came to fruition in 1959 with director William Wyler delivering one of Hollywood’s greatest historical masterpieces. MGM had considered several actors for the lead role of Judah Ben-Hur, including Burt Lancaster and Rock Hudson. William Wyler, however, who had free reign to cast the picture, eventually settled on Charlton Heston. Rounding out the principal roles were Stephen Boyd as Messala, Jack Hawkins as Quintus Arrius, A “Ben-Hur” one-sheet poster A “Ben-Hur” British front-of- Haya Harareet as Esther, Hugh Griffith as Sheik Ilderim, house still set sold for $418.25. sold for $310.70. When it comes to big screen movie spectaculars few pictures can top the might and majesty of 1959’s “Ben-Hur.” One of Hollywood’s all-time cinematic epics, the 1959 version is a big favorite with movie memorabilia collectors, with values reflecting the intense demand for such

promotional paper artifacts as posters, lobby cards and other paraphernalia. “Ben-Hur” owes its origins to author Lew Wallace, a Union general during the Civil War and later governor of the New Mexico Territory, who in 1880 authored a sweeping historical novel titled “Ben-Hur: A Tale of the Christ.” Wallace’s novel was later brought to the stage in

The latter, of course, featured the famous chariot race sequence, with legendary stuntman Yakima Canutt molding both Charlton Heston and Stephen Boyd into competent chariot drivers before the final cut. The thrilling chariot race, now the stuff of movie history, was a huge undertaking involving 40,000 tons of sand imported from Mediterranean beaches and 7,000 locals hired to strategically fill the stadium. The spectators were moved about with military precision in order to create the effect of a packed arena. It was Joe Canutt, Yakima’s son, who performed the most dangerous stunts in the racing sequence. In one scene, where Ben-Hur’s chariot jumps a piece of wreckage, Joe Canutt (Continued on page 8)

was nearly crushed to death, escaping serious injury or death after flinging himself free of the careening vehicle. Set in A.D. 26, the film tells the story of Judah Ben-Hur, a wealthy Jewish prince who runs afoul of his childhood friend, Massala, the new commander of the Roman garrison. Condemned as a galley slave, Ben-Hur later earns his freedom following heroic actions at sea and becomes the adopted son of Roman Consul Quintus Arrias, whom he had saved during a battle with Macedonian pirates.
