The specialty auction house of Robert Edwards is well-known to those who follow the sports card market. The company sold a T206 Honus Wagner card, which was rated 3 out of 10, for $1.32 million, setting a record for the card in that condition. The auction firm recorded 42 bids worldwide on the famous card. Seven years ago, it had sold for $791,000. The sports collectibles division of Heritage Auctions has also had a record-setting first half of 2015, establishing new highs in cards and memorabilia. The story is inside, as is a short review of a small regional sale of vintage sports cards sold through Gateway Gallery Auction in Pennsylvania. Of course, there is much more than news on the field of sports cards inside. Contributor Roy Nuhn has written a short history on the Victorian-era paper toys used as marketing inserts by the Woolson Spice Company. In particular, the author showcases the advertising inserts associated with the company’s popular Lion brand coffee. Also featured is an article about a major WWI poster collection being sold unreserved on Wednesday and Thursday, July 8 and 9, in New York City through Guernsey’s. The Col. McCrahon patriotic war poster collection is considered the finest of its kind. There is a lot more information on various upcoming sales, shows, and exhibitions. Until next month, enjoy!

T206 Honus Wagner Baseball Card Sets New Auction Record Selling For $1.32 Million Robert Edward Auctions, one of the world’s leading specialty auction houses, devoted exclusively to the sale of rare baseball cards, memorabilia and Americana, sold a T206 Honus Wagner for $1.32 million. It is considered to be the most valuable baseball card in the world, and the price achieved is a new record for an example in its condition. Fortytwo bids from around the world came in for the baseball card featuring the Pittsburgh Pirates Hall of Famer. The sale of the card, which was authenticated by California-based Professional Sports Authenticators, was rated a 3 out of 10. The same card had previously sold for $791,000 at auction in 2008. Approximately 60 different examples of the T206 Honus Wagner card are believed to be in existence. The record sale price for any T206 Honus Wagner card is $2.8 million, an example that was rated 8 out of 10. That card previously

belonged to hockey legend Wayne Gretzky. “The interest in the T206 Honus Wagner card was tremendous,” said Brian Dwyer, consignment director, Robert Edward Auctions. “Bidders really appreciated the quality of the card, its great story, and the rare opportunity to own one of the most famous baseball cards in existence. We were honored to have had the privilege to include it among the items in our spring auction lineup.” Robert Edward Auctions’ spring auction was held from April 2 through April 25 and featured a variety of other items, ranging from sports cards to Americana, including a 1916 Sporting News Babe Ruth rookie card, which sold for $204,000; a collection of “Three Stooges” movie posters and lobby cards, which totaled $251,580; a 1970 Hank Aaron Atlanta Braves baseball jersey, which sold for $66,000; an Augusta

auction’s total sales figures exceeded $7 million. For additional information, readers may visit www.robert edwardauctions.com.

Play Time Treasures From Lion Coffee By Roy Nuhn

and Christmas seasons, as well as other themes, such as children, animals, winter scenes and rural America. Collecting free pictorial cards from businesses and manufacturers had become a national fad during the last two decades of the 19th century. The highlight of any trip to the local grocer in those days was getting free gift cards off of counter tops or finding them inside product packages, especially those of Lion Coffee’s. Sometime after 1892, Woolson Spice abandoned lithographic trade cards and introduced a new style of insert premium: paper toys and paper dolls. These freebies were targeted at pre-teen children. Earlier trade cards, notably Yuletide scenes, had strongly appealed to adults, mainly housewives. Now, Woolson made available sets of premiums intended to fascinate

youngsters, who, it was hoped, would influence their mothers into buying Lion Coffee. The die-cut, standup figures could be played with alone or combined with others into play sets or mini-panoramas. At least four different series, possibly more, were created and became immensely popular with America’s youth. The series titled “Children’s Dolls With Stories” consisted of 30 different cards. These varied in size from 1.5-by-5.5-inches to 3.25-by-4.5-inches and mostly consisted of old nursery rhyme and fairy tale characters and scene standups. The beloved classics were represented here by “Old Mother Hubbard,” “Sleeping Beauty,” “Tom, Tom the Piper’s Son,” “Old Woman in the Shoe,” Little Miss Muffet,”

and “Jack and the Beanstalk.” Each play set had three or more figures and props. The series “Paper Toys for the Children” was another set of 30 titles. These toys came perforated with bendable corners, making it possible to (Continued on page 18)

Some of the best Victorian-era paper toys are the wonderful treasures once given away by the Woolson Spice Company as insert premiums. These playthings were an important part of the firm’s marketing strategy. Along with Arbuckle Coffee Company and Cracker Jack, Woolson Spice was one of the most important users of this advertising gimmick. Their paper toy novelties, however, were just one of a variety of sales incentives employed by the company. It all began in either 1880 or 1881 when they first placed colorful trade cards into one-pound packages of their popular Lion brand coffee. Woolson, the second or third largest coffee producer at the time, offered the free cards to anyone purchasing its product. These 5-by-7-inch lithographic miniatures included greeting cards for the Easter

The memorabilia session on May 15 capitalized on the strong momentum from the day before, setting new auction highs across a wide realm of sports and formats. A rare oversized New York Yankees nodder drew a winning bid of $59,750. The finest known example of a 1978 Super Bowl XII full ticket outpaced its $30 face value by a factor of 1,000, selling for $31,070. After the most important sports collectibles auction of the 21st century commanded nearly $10 million on a snowy February Platinum Night Auction in New York City, Heritage Auctions’ Sports continued its impressive run in Dallas, Texas, on May 14 to 16 with its $8.3 million Sports Catalog Auction. The three-day, extendedbidding format auction stunned hobby veterans as a deluge of world record prices were realized. Another record set in the auction by Heritage, the hobby’s largest sports auction firm, was that more than 1,000 different bidders were winners in the three-day event. “Years in the auction business has taught us to expect the unexpected,” said Chris Ivy, director of sports auctions at Heritage, “but this auction provided results that soared past even our most optimistic predictions.” The Trading Card session on May 14 accounted for more than $4 million of the auction total, upending conventional pricing wisdom across the full spectrum, from a $35,850 result for a PSA EX 5 example of Honus Wagner’s 1911 M110 Sporting Life to the highest figure ever paid, $10,755; and for a card from the 1984 Topps USFL issue, $10,755 for a PSA Gem Mint 10 Reggie White. The great Bambino took top honors for the evening. His 1916 D329 Weil Baking card in SGC 60 EX 5 condition realized $89,625. Fellow New York Yankees legend Mickey Mantle broke the record for a PSA NM 7. Examples of his 1951 Bowman rookie drew a winning

Guernsey’s To Sell The Collection Of 2,000 Patriotic Posters McCrahon collection was widely exhibited and acknowledged in countless print articles, and even in Ripley’s “Believe It or Not,” as the finest collection of its type. The Col. McCrahon collection reflects the true international flavor of the war, as numerous countries and their respective languages were used to inform and motivate the civilian public during that time of great crisis. Of note are the many foreign language posters that were printed here in the United States that functioned as outreach to the large clusters of immigrants in cities such as New York. Although all are patriotic at their roots, this collection features posters that cover fundraising, food rationing, enlistment, women’s war efforts, and animal aid. Many of the posters collected by Col. McCrahon are the only known copies to exist today. Never having left the McCrahon family, the collection has been consigned to Guernsey’s by the colonel’s grandchildren. The sale will take place over two days with approximately 700 lots each day (some of the lots containing multiple posters). For additional information, call 212-794-2280 or visit www.guernseys.com.

On Wednesday and Thursday, July 8 and 9, New York City-based auction house Guernsey’s will be conducting an unreserved auction of quite possibly the finest collection of patriotic posters relating to World War I. Roughly half of the approximately 2,000 posters are from the United States, with the balance reflecting the many different nations involved in the Great War. The auction will be held on www.LiveAuctioneers.com. Brooklyn-born Edward H. McCrahon was so passionate in his defense of the allied nations that he joined the French Army two years prior to the United States entering the war. Once the U.S. became involved, McCrahon returned home, enlisted in the U.S. Army, and rose to the rank of colonel. However, it was during his stint in France when he first became riveted by the compelling graphics of war poster art. At the conclusion of the war, Col. McCrahon devoted his energies toward assembling what has been ultimately recognized as the most extensive collection of war posters known to exist. By the mid-1930s, after 16 years of collecting, the Col.

stand them up. They were similar to the sheets of paper soldiers and villages being manufactured by McLoughlin Bros. and other publishers of the era for sale as penny, nickel and dime merchandise in stores and shops. Such toys provided young children with many hours of play. A large assortment of other paper toys was also offered, among them Indians on the warpath, battleships, soldiers, pony carts, baby carriages, doll cradles, and billy goat cart. Paper dolls, the province of young ladies, were another category. A lengthy series of diecut children and women figures attracted a lot of interest. The earliest paper dolls were ordinary stand-ups. Accessories and additional changes of

clothing were later added. The variety of items grew more and more complex and expansive. Near the end of the 1890s, Woolson began inserting cards that, when combined, made up nursery rhyme mini-panoramas. This paper doll concept provided a change of clothing and offered segments of the story. The panorama of “Mary and Her Lamb,” for instance had a lamb figure, a doll of Mary going to school, and a standup classroom scene that left a place for Mary behind her desk. A doll of Mary seated, reading a book was supplied for this classroom. During this same time, the company also stocked additional premiums obtainable through the mail. A vast array of gifts could be gotten by sending in a certain number of lion heads cut from coffee wrappers. These gifts included games, toys, and books. Woolson enclosed an “Illustrated Premium List” with every order. They also advertised in several magazines, such as Ladies Home Journal, to mail it out upon receipt of a two cent stamp to cover

postage costs. Their competitor, Arbuckle Coffee, had a similar list. Such booklets are in demand today. After the turn of the 20th century, the firm changed its advertising direction and stopped putting trade cards and paper novelties inside packages of Lion Coffee. The time of such promotions had passed. Most other food, tobacco, and candy companies were also discontinuing the practice. Modern publicity techniques, especially mass media magazine advertising, were being developed for the new age. Woolson Spice Company’s many paper toys and paper dolls are now greatly cherished by collectors and lovers of all things Victorian. Two fortunate happenings occurred long ago to help the growing hobby. One, sturdy cardboard stock had been used in the production of the insert giveaways. And two, such huge numbers were printed and distributed that large quantities of them survived to the present day.

swimmer Brooke Bennett saw an international field of collectors drive prices past $80,000. “There’s no question that our global reach is the key factor in our long history of Olympic pricing records,” said Ivy. Further highlights included a 1958 Topps Bob Clemente, White Letters #52 PSA Gem Mint 10, considered among the finest examples known in the hobby, realizing $40,630. A 1986 Fleer Basketball Wax Box With 36 PSA graded packs realized $33,460. A 1936 Green Bay Packers NFL championship gold watch presented to Hall of Famer Clarke Hinkle realized $28,680; a pair of Roberto Duran fight worn trucks from the 1980 championship fight with Sugar Ray Leonard bout sold for $26,290; and a 1888 N162 Goodwin Champions Cap Anson/Baseball PSA NM 7 realized $26,290. A 1934 Tour of Japan team signed baseballs from both the American and Japanese teams sold for $22,705, and a 1959 Topps Mickey Mantle #10 SGC 96 Mint 9, the reigning SGC champion, realized $22,705.
