This month, William Felchner examines Ernest Hemingway movie memorabilia in his quarterly “Hollywood Archives” column. In his article, Felchner studies 10 films adapted from Hemingway’s works and film memorabilia associated with each production. A multi-faceted writer and adventurer, Hemingway continues to be celebrated as one of the premier figures in 20th-century literature. The regional auction company Gateway Gallery Auction in Chambersburg, Pa., will hold a sports card and memorabilia sale on May 30, which will include a PSA graded 1952 Mickey Mantle Topps rookie card. The auction will feature many cards from legends of the game. Also featured, as showcased on the cover, is the only 6-foot movie poster from the 1931 classic film Frankenstein. The once-discarded advertising poster was once in a Long Island theater and sold through Heritage Auctions for $358,500. Of course, there is much more, including information on many shows and auctions. Until next month, enjoy!

Once Discarded Frankenstein Movie Poster Sells For $358,500 At Heritage Auctions Vintage Movie Posters Auction Hits $2.1 Million On March 28 And 29 the best time to buy a new discovery is the first time it’s offered at auction,” said Grey Smith, director of Vintage Posters at Heritage Auctions. “This is quite simply an amazing poster and a true piece of Hollywood history. It will be the gem of any collection. Period.” The Style C three-sheet measures a hulking 41-by-78.5inches and had apparently been used by the theater as a display for a number of reissues of the film, as was often the case throughout the 1930s and ’40s. Bidders also pushed the sale price of an 11-by-14-inch lobby card from the film to $40,630, making it the most valuable example of its kind from the movie. An imposing six-sheet for “The Maltese Falcon” (Warner Brothers, 1941), the onlyknown copy to have appeared at public auction, sold for $191,200 after spending decades in the private theaters of an old Detroit collection. Another lone survivor from the early years of American cinema, a three-sheet for the silent

film “London After Midnight” (MGM, 1927) starring Lon Chaney, sold for $71,700 in its auction debut. A one-sheet Style D for “The Wizard of Oz” (MGM, 1939), considered to be the better style one-sheet of the two produced for the film’s original release, saw interest from eight bidders who pushed the selling price to $65,725, more than double its estimate. Two one-sheet posters featuring memorable images of Hollywood’s leading ladies quickly surpassed their estimates: a gorgeous poster for the 1933 Marlene Dietrich vehicle “The Song of Songs” (Paramount, 1933) sold for $35,850, against a $15,000 estimate, and a bruised Carole Lombard on a 1936 poster for “Love Before Breakfast”

(Universal) sold for $33,460, against a $20,000 estimate. A rare surviving one-sheet from the silent film era, a poster for “Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm” (Artcraft, 1917), starring Mary Pickford, brought $31,070. Additional highlights included the following: an Australian daybill for “Casablanca” (Warner Brothers, 1942) selling for $21,510; an Italian four foglio for “La Dolce Vita” (Cineriz, 1960), $19,120; a three-sheet for “The Dawn Patrol,” starring Errol Flynn (Warner Brothers, 1938), $15,535; and a signed, preliminary artwork sketch by director Akira Kurosawa from his 1980 masterpiece “Kagemusha,” which also sold for $15,535. The iconic Topps rookie card of Mantle, traditionally regarded as baseball’s most popular post-war player, is the one that serious collectors crave most of all. It is from Topps’ first major set, and Mantle was the star of the New York Yankees at the time, baseball’s most celebrated team. Demand is strong for Mantle’s first Topps card, particularly ones graded by sports card professionals. In the past five years, similar Mantle cards have sold at auction for between $10,000 and $20,000. The card being auctioned is graded a 6 out of 10 by PSA Sports Authenticator, the hobby’s top evaluator of sports cards. The Mantle grade 6 card is considered to be in excellent to near-mint condition. Just 11 Mantle Topps rookies have ever been graded at 8.5 or higher by the company, and most

Ernest Hemingway (Continued from page 11)

Hemingway’s star-crossed lovers in war-torn Italy. One of the big collector attractions is the gorgeous stone lithograph one-sheet style A movie poster (27-by-41-inches) picturing the luminescent Cooper and Hayes. One restored example in very fine condition on linen sold at auction for $3,680. 2. “For Whom the Bell Tolls” (1943): Gary Cooper and Ingrid Bergman garner the starring roles in this highlyacclaimed film based on the 1940 Hemingway novel and set during the Spanish Civil War. Directed by Sam Wood, “For Whom the Bell Tolls” earned nine Academy Award nominations, with Katina Paxinou as Pilar taking home the lone Oscar for Best Supporting Actress. The standard one-sheet poster (27-by-41-inches) featuring Cooper and Bergman is a collector favorite, with one restored example in very fine condition on linen bringing $1,434 at auction. A complete set of eight lobby cards (11-by14-inches each) prominently

displayed in theater lobbies to further induce moviegoers brought a top bid of $359 in fine/very fine condition. 3. “To Have and Have Not” (1944): The unbeatable duo of Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall star in this updated World War II thriller based on the 1937 Hemingway novel of the same name. Bogey appears as Harry Morgan, the worldly skipper of a boat-for-hire based in Martinique, and Bacall as Marie “Slim” Browning, a sassy nightclub singer, both of whom become involved in the smuggling of a resistance fighter on the run from the Nazis. The movie’s insert poster (14by-36-inches) is a real treat, with one example in folded fine/very fine condition bringing $5,079 at auction. “To Have and Have Not” was later rereleased in 1952, spawning yet more promotional movie material. A 1952 half-sheet poster (22-by-28-inches) in rolled fine condition fetched a reasonable $75 at auction. 4. “The Killers” (1946): Burt Lancaster made his motion picture debut as Ole “Swede” Anderson, an ex-boxer who becomes the target of a pair of
