This month, collector James Milkovich revisits a popular article he wrote one year ago about Santa Buttons from Southgate USA. The Ohio shopping mall Southgate USA annually releases a small lapel button with the image of Santa Claus. The Santa Button, as it is known, has become a regional collecting tradition. The year 2015 marks the mall’s 60th anniversary; the Santa Button was first introduced in 1971. Also, there is a story about a recently sold menu from the Titanic. The only-known example of the April 14, 1912, dinner menu from the R.M.S. Titanic realized $118,750 at a sale through Heritage Auctions. The Mercer Museum in Doylestown, Pa., recently announced the republishing of “November Night Tales.” The long-outof-print book by founder Henry Mercer includes an additional tale, “The Well of Monte Carlo,” which was discovered following Mercer’s death in 1930. The book of stories showcases the influential Mercer’s love of Gothic literature. Of course, there is much more, including information on numerous shows, auctions, and exhibitions, such as the Papermania Plus and Boxborough Paper Town shows, both important events in the Northeast.

The Santa Button Celebrates 60 Years Of Southgate USA An Update On A Regional Collecting Tradition holiday season, a festive Christmas parade complete with local dignitaries, marching bands and Santa Claus weaved its way through the center to cap off a decade of unprecedented customer service. In 1971, Southgate’s management introduced a small, red on white, lapel button with an image of Santa Claus that was designed to be tossed into the crowds that lined the streets for the annual Christmas parade

and then distributed free of charge by member stores throughout the holiday season. Fresh images of Santa were created in 1972 and 1973 as interest in the unique holiday token began to gain momentum. A date was added to the button in 1974, and a mini collector craze ensued. In 1979, Ted Knight, best known for his role as a quirky newscaster on the “Mary Tyler Moore Show,” served as the Christmas parade’s Master of Ceremonies. A full-page newspaper advertisement featured Knight stating, “All good things come from Southgate USA, including our famous Santa button!” Throughout the years, the button’s design has remained brilliantly simple and consistent. The first recognizable deviation came in 1990 as a silver background was added to mark the 25th anniversary The 2015 Southgate USA Santa of the Christmas parade. By August of 1955, World War II had been over for ten years, and Americans of all ages were busy partaking in the offerings of postwar prosperity. Davy Crockett coonskin caps were a fashion rage, Ray Kroc’s first McDonald’s restaurant opened in suburban Chicago, 20-year old Elvis Presley signed with RCA to record “Heartbreak Hotel,” and the ultra-modern Southgate USA shopping center was christened on the corner of Warrensville Center and Libby Roads in Maple Heights, Ohio. Southgate’s immediate success and popularity fueled consistent expansion. By 1961, the center boasted a remarkable full mile of stores and over 1,000,000 square feet of shopping space. Four years later, in 1965, Southgate USA became the nation’s largest shopping center, with more than one-half of greater Cleveland’s booming population having visited its array of over 100 stores. Victorian-Era Santa Claus Trade Cards Offer Festive Advertising By Roy Nuhn

Given away free by merchants, found inside packages and tins of various products, and available through the mail, trade cards were once a major advertising medium. These miniature chromolithographs were immensely popular with the public, who saved and cherished them in special albums. Provided by all kinds of merchants, vendors and manufacturers, they touted a wide range of products and services. Trade cards played an important role in the early history of America’s advertising industry and a small part in the unfolding saga of the industrial revolution. People’s fascination with them created a demand so strong that few businesses or manufacturers, large or small, failed to use them to promote their wares. The 1880s and 1890s were peak years and the quality and quantity of advertising cards produced is truly remarkable. It was a golden age for these masterpieces of illustration and advertising. From the beginning, they were especially plentiful during the Christmas season to promote individual stores and specific merchandise. Far and away the favorites of children and adults alike were advertising cards picturing Santa Claus. The popularization of Santa throughout the nation also seems to have coincided with the birth of modern marketing and advertising. Early businessmen sensed the potential of turning Santa Claus into a spokesman. Actually, Santa Claus and Christmas itself had not fared too well in Colonial America and the early United States. In the New England states, the Puritans were successful in once banning holiday festivities. In the South, though celebrated for generations, it was more a special day for adults than a holiday for children. The adoration of Santa and the custom of his yearly Christmas Eve rounds to bring gifts to deserving boys and girls was for a long-time confined to New York. Dutch immigrants had brought St. Nicholas to

America when they settled New Amsterdam. Over the years they continued to soften “Sinter Klas’” patriarchal Old World image. In 1822, Clement C. Moore wrote his immortal “A Visit from St. Nicholas” (often referred to as “The Night Before Christmas”). This light-hearted poem was based in large part upon Washington Irving’s writing of a decade earlier. Aided by famed American illustrator Thomas Nast’s imaginative cartoons and drawings, Santa Claus, his reindeer and much of his legend entered the mainstream of American culture. It was primarily Nast’s interpretation of Santa, as drawn for Harper’s Weekly from 1862 to 1889, that steadily came to be used as a sort of super salesman by the nation’s business community. The emergence of St. Nick as an American tradition took place as the Christmas holiday itself increasingly became one of festive celebration, laden with ritual and folklore. Christmas scenes on advertising cards reflected this new cultural outlook. By the middle of the 1880s, and for roughly the next 15 years, Santa Claus illustrations on trade cards were very much a part of the glad happenings every Yuletide season. The majority of Santa Claus and Christmas trade cards were all-purpose stock-types printed with general scenes and sold in wholesale quantities to many different companies, large and small. These often can be found (Continued on page 15)

Titanic’s Last Menu Brings $118,750 First Class Dinner Menu Is The Only Known Surviving Example The only known surviving April 14, 1912, first class dinner menu from the R.M.S. Titanic, saved the very night the “unsinkable ship” slipped beneath the waves of the North Atlantic Ocean, sold for $118,750 in Heritage Auctions’ $1.1+ million Americana & Political Grand Format Auction on Nov. 7 in Dallas, Texas. The Nov. 7 auction offered a host of rare and one-of-a-kind items, including the license plates used on the presidential limousine carrying President John F. Kennedy when he was assassinated on Nov. 22, 1963, in Dallas, which sold for $100,000. “We pride ourselves on preserving unique items which played a crucial role in the history of our country and the world, and this auction was no exception,” said Tom Slater, director of Americana auctions at Heritage. “These objects tell the story of the human experience, and the rare trove of Titanic objects and the Kennedy limo plates are among the most evocative ever offered at Heritage.” The remarkable Titanic final dinner menu is signed by first class passengers Edward P. Calderhead of New York City; Spencer V. Silverthorne of St. Louis, Mo.; George E. Graham, a sales manager from Winnipeg, Canada; James R. McGough, a buyer from Philadelphia; and John Irwin Flynn of Brooklyn, N.Y., and is one of three pieces of memorabilia relating to the sinking offered in the auction. An oil painting of the iceberg by rescue ship passenger Laura Wilson Luce of Titusville, Pa., sold for $12,500, and a menu from the R.M.S. Carpathia, the ship that first reached the Titanic following the sinking,

sold for $3,125. Of equal interest to history, the license plates on the presidential limousine President Kennedy was in when he was assassinated were fatefully saved from the trash 52 years ago by Willard C. Hess, the owner of Hess & Eisenhardt, the company that retrofitted presidential limousines. The plates were purchased by an ardent Kennedy collector who wished to stay anonymous. They were consigned to Heritage by Jane Walker, Hess’s daughter, who kept the license plates for the last half century in a drawer in her Ohio kitchen. While her father was alive, said Walker, he kept them between a pair of books on his bookshelf. President Kennedy’s 1951 U.S. Passport, issued to him as a congressman, sold for $52,500, and a 1950s passport issued to Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy sold for $45,000. Kennedy’s well-used leather wallet and 1959-61 Massachusetts Driver’s License went for $38,750, against a $20,000 estimate. Additional highlights included Zachary Taylor’s personally-owned eyeglasses and case, which sold for $27,500; an Abraham Lincoln and Andrew Johnson 1864 campaign flag that realized $24,375; Dwight D. Eisenhower’s personallyowned stetson hat, $22,500; and a substantial lock of hair from President George Washington, which sold for $18,750. For more information, visit www.HA.com.

Henry Mercer’s Work Of Gothic Fiction, “November Night Tales,” Republished “November Night Tales,” the long out-of-print book of stories by Henry C. Mercer, has been republished by Valancourt Books. Toward the end of his life, Mercer, a noted historian, collector, and tile manufacturer, channeled his antiquarian interests and his love of Gothic literature into “November Night Tales” (1928). For his volume of highly imaginative stories, Mercer drew inspiration from authors like Poe, Shelley, Stoker and Conan Doyle. The first-ever republication of “November Night Tales” includes all six stories from the

scarce first edition, plus an additional rare tale, “The Well of Monte Carbo,” discovered among Mercer’s papers after his death in 1930. Also included is an insightful new introduction by Cory M. Amsler, vice president of collections and interpretation at the Mercer Museum. All of the stories in “November Night Tales” are set in a world of the fantastic and the mysterious. In “Castle Valley,” unexpected consequences ensue when an artist gazes into an old crystal and sees visions of a Gothic

castle. In “The Blackbird,” a flock of vultures may portend an ominous fate for a young man who has been warned that calamity will befall him on his birthday. “The Well of Monte Carbo” describes a chance encounter with a centuries-old print, which leads to the ruins of an ancient castle and the discovery of a mysterious relic lost at the bottom of the castle’s well. The 197-page softcover book is being sold for $16.99 at the Mercer Museum and Fonthill Castle, through www.mercermuseum.org and

on Amazon.com. About Henry Mercer Henry Chapman Mercer (1856-1930), a native of Doylestown, Pa., was a noted historian, collector, tile manufacturer, antiquarian, artist and writer as well as a leader in the turn-of-the-20th-century Arts and Crafts movement. Mercer’s legacy includes architecture (Mercer Museum, Fonthill Castle, and the Moravian Pottery & Tile Works), art, history and archaeology. Today, all three Mercer sites are designated as National Historic Landmarks.

By the turn of the century, however, interest in advertising cards sharply declined as the public became caught up in a new fad imported from Europe, the picture postcard. Also, more and more reliance was being placed on advertising in mass circulation magazines by ad agencies. Advertising cards are in relatively plentiful supply, considering they are over a century old. Prices range from $25 for less quality, general stock designs, while the very best lithographic gems, such as those by Woolson Spice, can tall up to $100 or more.
