Roughly 100 American, along with English and German, publishing firms manufactured more than 3,000 various Halloween postcards, in large part, between 1904 and 1914. The industry leaders in this country had operations in New York City. Among these were Raphael Tuck & Sons. Based in London, the company had an office in New York City and was the largest postcard manufacturer in the Western world. Both of these articles present an array of Halloween postcards, including cards by Raphael Tuck & Sons. Another feature this month is the recently published “Picker’s Pocket Guide - Comic Books: How to Pick Antiques Like a Pro,” which will be of interest to any collector or dealer of comics. Of course, there is much more, including information on shows such as the Manhasset Antiques and Decoratives Show and the Pioneer Valley Book and Ephemera Fair. Until next month, enjoy!

Raphael Tuck & Sons:

A Treasure Chest Of Halloween Postcards By Roy Nuhn

Halloween postcards were published in great abundance, notably in the years from 1904 to 1914. Though populated by all sorts of supernatural creatures that once scared folks, it was a time of growing irreverence toward “things that go bump in the night,” and postcards of that era often joined in the fun. Halloween postcards were meant for people to mail to each other, as they would any holiday card. Despite the best efforts of greeting card companies since the 1930s, the intensity and widespread observance of the custom of celebrating through postcards has long since disappeared. Nearly 100 different publishers, mostly American but including a significant number of English and German firms, manufactured and distributed more than 3,000 different Halloween postcards. Many of these companies were located

in New York City, home to this country’s postcard publishing industry, yet others were found in a score of large and small cities throughout the country. Also making New York City their operations center were a dozen or so multinational

publishers from Europe. Among these were Raphael Tuck & Sons, based in London, the largest postcard manufacturer in the Western world. Tuck’s New York City branch had been established in the waning years of the previous century to sell and distribute the company’s massive

outpouring of paper novelty goods and children’s books. When the postcard fad swept England and Europe in the 1890s and, a decade later, the United States, Tuck quickly became the world’s largest producer and seller of them. They grabbed the lion’s share of the

The last three, Series Nos. 816, 830, and 831, the exact years are not known for their release dates, but most likely it was in 1913 or 1914. The earliest, numbered 150, 160, and 174 (on sale from 1908 to 1910), contained 12 cards each. The sets that followed had fewer cards, 10 being the common figure, but often only three. This change in the number of cards in individual sets parallels what Tuck did with its Washington’s Birthday postcards over the same span of time. It may have been a result of the effects of the 1909 PayneAldrich tariff act, which taxed postcard imports at a much higher rate. The five sets in the 800 range of numbers, along with Series No. 100, were sold during the declining years of the postcard craze, 1913 and 1914. market, both here and in other countries, by employing the best illustrators England and America had to offer and by having their cards printed by the lithographic factories of Bavaria, then the world’s best. With the possible exception of the exquisite offerings from John Winsch Co., the Halloween postcards most sought after by collectors have been the treasures published by Tuck. As with many other themes, Tuck’s postcards far surpassed all others in both beauty and variety of design. Fourteen different sets from Tuck have been identified and documented. Two, Series No. 150 and Series No. 160, are relatively common, having been repeatedly reprinted year after year for the pre-World War I marketplace. The others, especially the 800 numbered sets, have always been difficult to find. Tuck’s first Halloween set, Series No. 150, hit the market in 1908. This was followed the

next year by Series No. 160. During the next five years, leading up to the eruption of World War I in August of 1914, 12 more sets were issued. These

Elves, Goblins, Gremlins, And More: Collecting Halloween Postcards By Bob Dissinger

Halloween wasn’t widely celebrated in Americal until the late 19th century or early 20th century. Irish immigrants brought the celebration to America based on All Saints Day, a day the Christian church set aside to remember martyrs. There is much blending with the Celtic pagan celebration of Samhain. Other word associations are “Allhalloween,” “All Hallows Eve,” “All Saints Eve,” a n d “Allhallotide.” The purpose of the Christian religious celebrations were to remember the dead, including saints (hallows), martyrs, and the faithful departed believers. The late 19th and early 20th century

Much more basic information can be brought about trick-or-treating and “guising” (the wearing of costumes) in America. gleaned from Wikipedia.org and various The main theme of the celebration was postcard collecting websites. Happy using humor and ridicule to confront the Halloween! power of death. The growth and development of Halloween symbols gradually evolved over time. Jack-O-Lanterns, black cats, witches, bats, elves, goblins, gremlins, ghosts, specters, among others, are all thought of as Halloween connections. Early on, these dark things were thought to be kept away or at bay by guiding fires, blessings, candle processions, Jack-O-Lanterns, and prayer and to guide the dead to their destinations. Traditionally, witches, black cats, bats, and Jack-OLanterns were generally pictured on Halloween postcards, but elves, goblins, and gremlins and the like do not appear on the specialized cards with any regularity. The cards that I have chosen for your viewing enjoyment showcase a range of subject matter and are from a range of publishers. Halloween is widely considered one of the more popular categories for postcard enthusiasts. The market for Halloween cards is as varied as the large number that were published. Postcard collecting is a great hobby, and this is a great time to enter the market.

these famous comic books that have confused people for years.” “Each decade from the 1930s on is covered, with listings of the most popular comics from each time period,” said Tosh. “I mention what to look for and what to avoid when going through stacks of old comic books, and the best ways to sell what you find. The book is loaded with full-color photos of comics in a variety of grades, with descriptions and prices realized, gleaned from the vast Heritage Auction archives.” The book is designed mainly as a guide to those who search garage sales and flea markets and such and happen to come across a few old comics that may or may not be of value. It also will serve as a primer for those interested in collecting but are new to the hobby. The “Picker’s Pocket Guide - Comic Books” contains a tremendous amount of comic book knowledge in a slender and sharp-looking guide. It is also available in editions for the

Amazon Kindle. The guidebook retails for $14.99 and is available at booksellers nationwide, select retail shops, and directly from the publisher online at www.KrauseBooks.com or by calling 855-864-2579 during regular business hours. About the Author: David Tosh has been a comics fan since the early 1960s, and a serious collector since 1972. For several years he owned and operated a small collectibles shop, Mr. Nostalgia, in Batesville, Ark. He has appeared as a dealer or guest at a number of comic conventions and has written a number of published articles. Tosh recently edited and compiled several collections of vintage comic book stories for major publishers, including “Henry Speaks for Himself” (Fantagraphics, 2014). Tosh has been with Dallas, Texasbased Heritage Auctions since 2003, working as a Comics Auction cataloger and consignment director.

An incredibly rare copy of Suspense Comics #3, Pennsylvania pedigree (Continental Magazines, 1944) CBCS 9.0 stunned the comics hobby on Aug. 27 when it realized $173,275 as the top lot in Heritage Auctions’ $5.1+ million Comics and Comic Art Signature Auction. It was the highest price ever realized at auction for a non-superhero comic book. “This copy, the one pictured in Gerber’s “Photo-Journal,” had been speculated about for years, and those who saw it in person found that the high grade was well-earned,” said Barry Sandoval, director of operations for comics and comic art at Heritage. “The consignor, Magik Woo, always sought out the very best, and we’ll be offering more gems from his collection in the

The artwork certainly did not disappoint, as bidders went toe-totoe for it before the dust finally settled on a $167,300 final price realized, the highest price ever realized at auction for an original piece of John Byrne art. “This splash page, for many fans, represents the very heart and soul of what made the XMen one of the most popular comic books of all time,” said Todd Hignite, vice president of Heritage Auctions. “It’s got it all: amazing art, incredible creativity and the luster of being the best X-Men story arc ever created.” Comic collectors took note of the CGC-graded 6.5 copy of AllAmerican Comics #16 (DC, 1940) in the auction, the debut issue of the original Green Lantern, Alan Scott, currently ranked as the fourth most valuable comic of all time. The range of the Halloween postcard is so great that a collector could specialize in one topic, such as cats, witches or pumpkin-headed men, or in one publisher, and spend his or her entire life trying to find everything published in the years after the turn of the 20th century. Within this holiday category, many hobbyists go after anything done by Raphael Tuck & Sons. Fourteen sets of varying card counts are known, but the whole story behind every set or if others exist is not entirely known. The joy of discovery awaits in this fun specialized field of collecting.
