The specialized market for vintage posters has shown tremendous strength in 2013. Over the summer, Heritage sold a 1931 Frankenstein insert movie poster (as seen on the cover) for a world auction record of $262,900. The entire sale, consisting of movie posters and assorted movie memorabilia, garnered $1.86 million. The following week, Swann Auction Galleries held a vintage poster sale grossing $428,423, setting various new records. “Swann once again broke its own world record for the iconic Uncle Sam ‘I Want You’ poster, and at least four other record prices were achieved,” said Nicholas D. Lowry of Swann. The “I Want You” poster from 1917 sold for $14,400. In numismatic news that will interest PACM readers, the world’s most valuable coin, the 1933 United States Double Eagle, is currently on display at the New York Historical Society. Also in this month’s issue is an article about the history behind trade cards from the Arbuckle Bros. Coffee Company. Enjoy.

Frankenstein Insert Movie Poster Soars At Heritage Sale An original 1931 poster for Frankenstein set a world record as the most valuable insert movie poster ever sold at auction when it realized $262,900 at H e r i t a g e Auctions on July 27. The sale provided a monster payday for the collector who bought it as a teenager for only a few dollars at a local antique store and later kept it in the closet for over 30 years. The entire auction sold more than $1.86 million in movie posters and related movie memorabilia. The poster was previously owned by Keith Johnson, of Ottawa, Ill. “I got it from an antique store in town in either 1968 or 1969, and I probably only paid $2 to $5 for it,” said Johnson. J o h n s o n ’s wife, Julie, said the framed Frankenstein poster “was kept in the closet for the 30 plus years we’ve been married. Every once in a while, we would pour ourselves a glass of wine and go take a look at it. We always loved it and thought it was very cool.” “It was strong sale overall, and people were out in numbers participating,” said Grey

Smith, Director of Movie Posters at Heritage. “We couldn’t be happier for the consignor.” Insert posters were printed on card stock paper and designed for movie theater display cases that would fit a 36-by-14-inch poster such as this one, Smith explained. For more on the sale, visit www.ha.com.

Fairgrounds To Host Allentown Paper Show On Oct. 5 And 6 Travel back in time at the Allentown Fall Antique Book, Paper & Advertising Show on Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 5 and 6. The show will be held in the Agricultural Hall on the Allentown Fairgrounds, 302 N. 17th St., Allentown, Pa. Hours will be Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. History is preserved in the quality goods available at this two-day event. Newspapers documenting world events, signed first-edition books by renowned authors, elaborate stocks issued by companies of the past, frameable prints and illustrations from the 19th and 20th centuries, and many varieties of photographica, such as daguerreotypes, stereoscopic views and tintypes, have been gathered by more than 170 dealers for collectors to enjoy. Delicate valentines that delighted young ladies in years gone by can delight another generation. Many reflect the styles of Victorian dress in exquisite and embellished chromolithographs. Transportation themed valentines illustrate traveling on steam locomotives and roadsters, and Halloween and Christmas cards offer a colorful, fun look at holiday costumes and decorations from decades ago. One of the most affordable ways to own a piece of history is through advertising trade cards. The Allentown Paper Show is a great resource for acquiring these small but popular collectibles. From around 1857 to 1900, businesses promoted their goods and services by handing out illustrated trade cards about the size of present day index cards. People collected and pasted them in scrapbooks. They advertised beverages such as soda, tea, beer and whiskey: farm and garden supplies: foods (including ice cream, cereal, preserves, and baking products); and tobacco, sewing, toys, jewelry and more. The furniture and home goods cards show what you would see in a Victorian home, with

women using a new clothes wringer or iron and men enjoying an adjustable chair. Toiletry companies guarantee to restore your hair and cure what ails you or your horse. Trade cards have a high crossover value. Cat collectors can find felines playing with thread or being cuddled by children in nostalgic illustrations. Exposition, fair and event cards appeal to collectors seeking these souvenirs of major events from over a century ago. Sports and recreation trade cards offer an alphabet of activities, from archery, baseball and cricket to rowing, swimming and tennis. Trade cards were discontinued when magazine and newspaper advertising became a better way of reaching consumers, and postcards replaced trade cards as the new collectible. Their collectivity continues to this day, and the Allentown show offers dozens of specialty dealers in “Postcard Row,” where collectors can sit and browse through cards from common to scarce in one convenient area. Trade cards, postcards, and holiday cards are just part of the Allentown Paper Show experience. Advertising collectibles such as tin containers, posters, calendars, trays, mirrors, signs and more made of wood, cardboard, tin porcelain, celluloid, glass, paper, and other materials will fill the booths at the show. Documents of all kinds, such as stocks, bonds, letters, deeds, discharge papers, certificates, letterheads, vouchers, bills, checks, reports or rosters are some of the collectible paper items that will be available. Both collectors and dealers are part of preserving the past by saving the ephemera that had been stored in attics, basements and garages across the country. The Allentown Paper Show is a great way to connect with these treasures and hold them safe for future generations. For more information on this event, call manager Sean Klutinoty at 610-571-4969.

This advertising 1880s, a giant coffee company gimmick worked so well that Arbuckle Bros. Coffee Company eventually became one of this country’s largest food processors. Approximately 3 by 5 inches in size, the cards came in a dazzling number of sets, most of which had 50 different cards. Humor, history, geography and cooking hints were some of the many topics. The nearly 1,000 different cards distributed by the firm offered Americans a fascinating look at both the nation and the world, past and present. The art of the illustrator and the skill of the printer had combined by this time to make it possible for everyone to see far beyond the limits of their little village or city block. In 1996, as part of a Secret Service sting at the Waldorf Astoria, a British coin dealer was arrested while trying to sell a 1933 Double Eagle, which he swore had formerly belonged to King Farouk. In 2002, at the conclusion of lengthy legal proceedings, the coin was sold at auction for $7,590,020, nearly doubling the previous world record. That coin, the only 1933 Double Eagle

which may be legally owned by an individual, is the one on display. It is on temporary loan from an anonymous private collection. Since the record-setting 2002 auction, the remarkable history of the 1933 Double Eagle has inspired four books, a documentary produced for the Smithsonian channel, and an episode of the television show “The Closer.” The coin also has been displayed at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York.
