In this month’s issue, we concentrate on the most celebrated holiday in the month of February, Valentine’s Day. During the second quarter of the 20th century, commercial artist John Scott designed thousands of valentine cards for the Gibson Company. In this issue, Scott’s grandson Robert Stauffer examines this work and presents a retrospective of his grandfather’s artistic life. In another featured article, frequent contributor Roy Nuhn examines comic strip valentines, many of which were created in the first half of the 20th century during a period when the comic strip was gaining in popularity. Of course, there is much more. Enjoy!

J ohn G. Scott And His 2,500 Valentines By Robert Stauffer

John G. Scott designed over 2,500 juvenile valentines during his 30 year career with the Gibson Company from 1924 to 1953. These efforts are meticulously recorded in his work journal, which covers his entire commercial artwork career from 1910 to 1953. In addition, he A Gibson card with actual stick of gum, 1930s. designed all sorts of other greeting cards for Gibson (birthday, Easter, Christmas, etc.), with a monthly salary that varied from $350/month in 1924 to $275/month in 1933 (a pay cut due to the Great Depression), and to $333/month in 1945. He also worked free lance, designing advertising blotters and calendars for the Osborne Company, the T.D. Murphy Company, Gerlack-Barlow, and Brown & Begelow. He illustrated magazine covers in the 1920s for various women’s magazines such as “The Farmers Wife” and “The American Needlewoman.” His best known illustrations are four

Cream of Wheat ads from the early 1920s (some of these are usually listed on eBay under “J.G. Scott” or “John G. Scott”). Despite the volume and variety of his commercial artwork, it has received little study or attention. An exception is Katherine Kreider’s book “One Hundred Years of Va l e n t i n e s , ” published by Schiffer in 1999. Also, two of his Cream of Wheat ads appeared in “Cream of Wheat Advertising Art” (by Dave Stivers, Collectors Showcase, 1986), but the biographical information provided is for another artist named John Scott, who did

Philadelphia to attend the Pennsylvania Museum School of Industrial Arts, graduating in 1910. His decision to attend art school was heavily influenced by a hunting accident that crippled his left arm and precluded him from any job that required heavy physical effort. While working as a commercial artist in Tamaqua, Pa., Scott embarked on other careers. He served as a representative for Schuykill County in the Pennsylvania General Assembly from 1925 to 1934 and was superintendent of the Coaldale Hospital from 1939 to 1956. His He graduated from earlier designs Girardville High School in from the 1920s 1904 and then went to have no company name on the back (and may have been done for companies other than Gibson). The printing is high quality, along with the artistic values. In the 1930s, cards were produced with a limited number of colors and neutral flesh tones (no rosy cheeks on these cards). Scott often tried to differentiate his cards in various ways: some were mechanical; some had a rear-view image on the back; and some had fabric, flocking, or feathers, This Gibson valentine postcard, and even a stick of 1920s, is one of about 15 or 20 chewing gum. valentines in postcard form. These are scarce, and I have only been able to find about 20 in 35 years of searching. Scott’s work is often confused with that of Charles Twelvetree’s. To identify Scott’s work, look for “Gibson” on the back, muted pastel colors (he always used This large die cut (9 inches tall) valentine from the 1920s has no company name.

The same traits can be used to separate Scott cards from various imitators that usually have “made in USA” on the front (see Krieder’s book, pp. 55-56, for more on this). J.G. Scott had other talents. He wrote all of the poetry that appeared in his greeting cards and on his ad blotters. One of his hobbies was oil painting; he even took a class at Lehigh University in the 1960s to “brush up” on his portrait painting skills. These oil paintings were never sold. They were displayed at his home on Lehigh Street in Tamaqua, and possibly given to friends and family. This author, Robert Stauffer, one of Scott’s grandsons, is interested in locating, cataloging, and/or acquiring these paintings. He can be contacted at stauffer@roanoke.edu, or at 540-774-4319. Comic Strip V alentines By Roy Nuhn

The uniquely American comic strip was born sometime in the mid-1890s when staff artist Richard Outcault launched his now famous “Hogan’s Alley” in Joseph Pulitzer’s New York World Sunday color supplement. Overnight its hero, The Yellow Kid, became the country’s first comic strip favorite, heading up a parade that would, over the next century, number hundreds of imaginary characters.

From 1900 to the beginning of World War I, the Sunday funny pages were far and away America’s leading form of entertainment. In an age when the movies were still silent, radio never mind television - was not even thought of, and burlesque theater and other forms of live entertainment were infrequently

seen in all but the largest cities, the colorful and exciting adventures found in the comics provided relaxation for folks of all ages. Editors and publishers soon discovered that comic strips sold newspapers as nothing else had ever done before. Quite quickly, top flight cartoonists of the caliber of Outcault, Opper, Dirks and Swinnterton were drawing astronomical salaries and living glamorous lives. They became folk heroes and were idolized by young people who dreamed of growing up to be cartoonists. In short order, America’s love affair with comic strips caught

the attention of the advertising industry. Soon Lulu and Leander, Maude the ornery mule, Mutt and Jeff, and all of their pals were endorsing and selling an endless caravan of goods and services. Character toys, decorating accessories and children’s products of every imaginable description were manufactured in the shape or with the image of the Katzenjammer Kids, Little Jimmy, Foxy Grandpa and others. In the following decades, Dick Tracy, Andy Gump, Jiggs and Maggie and Superman joined the lengthening list of cartoon (Continued on page 13)

Until the 1880s, most valentines, with the obvious exception of the so-called “penny dreadfuls,” were intended for lovers. Beautiful and passionate messages of eternal love and devotion

Comic Strip (Continued from page 13)

continued to do so for a halfdozen years afterward. Tuck also used the same illustrations for a rather large number of souvenir postcards. Buster may have been the first of the mass-produced and mass-marketed character valentines, but he was not the last. Within two years, many of his funny page companions were signing aboard the greeting card gravy train. Happy Hooligan, F. Opper’s sad-faced hobo, enjoyed great popularity, as did practically every comic strip star of the Sunday color comic supplements. Even Little Nemo and his dream world were found on valentine picture postcards. Though the comics and their artists lost some of their superstar status after 1920, they never stopped being universally loved by the public. Consequently,

Jiggs and Maggie (“Bringing Up Father”) mechanical valentine from the 1930s.

Garfield the Cat cut-out valentine from the Feb. 29, 1982, issue Greeting card with envelope by Superman. For the gals, there of Family Circle magazine. Ambassador featuring Snoopy was Wonder Woman, Supergirl and Mary Marvel. They were (“Peanuts”), copyright 1965.

greeting card publishers continued to use them for holiday cards, a practice that is still in place today. In the 1930s and early 1940s, Jiggs and Maggie, Blondie and Dagwood, Li’l Abner and Andy Gump were big celebrities, as were Felix the Cat and a host of Disney characters on the silver screen. By then the earlier bestsellers like Buster and Little Nemo had faded away and been forgotten. During those same years, mechanical Little Nemo from a set of valentine postcards comic strip valentines published by Tuck as Series No. 6. became all the rage.

These worked by turning the card; pulling a part of it outward, downward or some other angle; by moving a lever so an arm holding a flower, for example, would pop out; or by some similar maneuver to make another character appear. In addition, some English comic hits like George Studdy’s “Bonzo” and Lawson Woods’ “Gran’ pop” crossed the Atlantic to find a warm welcome on American greeting cards. After World War II, a new style of cartoon appeared and began nudging the Sunday comic people aside. These were comic book superheroes like Batman, Captain Marvel and

also published as mechanical valentines and are among the most sought after by collectors. Especially desirable are the Superman varieties, which came out in 1940, and Wonder Woman from the later years of that decade. This trend continued until the mid-1970s, when it reversed itself and went back to comedy. The Peanuts gang, Ziggy, Garfield the Cat and other practitioners of the belly laugh dominate today’s marketplace. Whether you have a fondness for early 20th-century themes or the more modern era, comic strip and comic book valentines are just the ticket for a different kind of collection.
