Hollywood Archives By William J. Felchner “Remembering Lon Chaney Jr.” Lon Chaney Jr. - son of the legendary silent film actor Lon Chaney (1883-1930) - enjoyed his own success in Hollywood, despite living under the long cinematic shadow cast by his famous father. By virtue of his appearances in several classic Universal Pictures horror movies as well as his memo-

er, meat cutter’s apprentice, advertising manager and farm laborer. Although discouraged by his father from entering show business, Chaney nonetheless eventually followed in his father’s footsteps after the latter’s death in 1930. Chaney’s first adult movie role came in The Galloping Ghost (1931), where he went uncredited as a henchman. Chaney continued to act under his birth name until 1935 when he switched to the

where he was cast as Dan McCormick in the horror/sci-fi picture Man-Made Monster (1941). That same year Chaney appeared as Lawrence Talbot a.k.a. the Wolf Man in the alltime horror classic The Wolf Man, a role which would often define his movie career. More Universal Pictures horror entries followed, including The Ghost of Frankenstein (1942), The Mummy’s Tomb (1942), Frankenstein Meets the Wolf Man (1943), Son of Dracula (1943), House of Frankenstein (1944), The Mummy’s Ghost (1944), The Mummy’s Curse (1944), House of Dracula (1945) and Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein (1948). The 1960s and 1970s witnessed Lon Chaney Jr. appearances in The Devil’s Messenger (1961), The Haunted Palace (1963), Face of the Screaming Werewolf (1964), House of the Black Death (1965), Dr. Terror’s Gallery of Horrors
