We hope this current issue finds you enjoying what remains of summer. Inside is Cynthia Hummel’s treatment on the fascinating book illustration artwork of Margaret Armstrong. Her work is highly collectable today. During the years of 1867 to 1944, Armstrong i l l u s t r at e d ov e r 2 7 0 b o o k covers, many of which were for famous romance writer of her day, Myrtle Reed. An avid postcard collector a n d r e s e a rc h e r , n e w PAC M contributor Bob Dissinger takes a look at railroad stations from the once industrial bedrock town of Pittsburgh. Also, you will find our Fooled By Fakes column geared towards how to distinguish between fake postcards and vintage. Another article this month includes an examination into the history behind the collectable matchbook cover by Joe DeGennaro of the Rathkamp Matchcover Society. The organization’s 73rd annual convention will be held Aug. 18 to 24 in Erlanger, Ky. We hope you enjoy.

Judging A Book By Its Cover Book Illustrator Margaret Armstrong Continues To Engage Collectors By Cynthia Hummel

While her name might not be readily recognizable, artist Margaret Armstrong’s works have been appreciated and collected for a more than a century. Armstrong illustrated more than 270 book covers in her lifetime, from 1867 to 1944. Collectors of rare books might recognize the flowers, plants and vines the nature-lover included in her designs. She used bright colors, such as lavender, red and green, and her designs were often stamped in gold. Armstrong illustrated multiple books by some authors, including Henry Van Dyke, Myrtle Reed, Paul Bourget and Paul Laurence Dunbar. Dave Moyer, owner of Moyer’s Book Barn in Strasburg, Pa., said that in the past, illustrators did not get the credit they do today. Moyer, who descends from a family of artists, said when illustrators signed their names, it was often in the form of their initials in the image. Armstrong only began including her “MA” in 1895, when other artists, called imitators, began replicating her style. Even then, she did not

always sign her works. Armstrong, the daughter of David Maitland Armstrong who owned property along the Hudson, was born in New York. She showed her creative side as a child with her sister, Helen, who became a stained glass artist. Her brother Hamilton Fish Armstrong, in a book called “Those Days,” said of Margaret, “She started a vogue for making the book covers themselves artistic and distinctive, and her covers became a sort of identity tag

for the author.” “Whenever I see the dark blue and gold design on the spine of some book on a library shelf, I have recognized it as Henry van Dyke’s, even before Margaret’s distinctive lettering tells me so,” he added. Enter Myrtle Reed. The Norwood Park, Ill., native established her career as a romance writer in 1902 with the release of “Lavender and Old Lace” in a lavender/mauve Margaret Armstrong binding. Reed’s works between 1898 to 1911 were immensely popu-

lar best-sellers of their time. Even Theodore Roosevelt wrote her a fan letter after reading “The Book of Clever Beasts,” one of her few books not illustrated by Armstrong. Ironically, booksellers today say that Reed titles are collected as much, if not more, for their Armstrong covers, rather than for the words they contain. Hamiliton Fish Armstrong, regarding the Reed books, said, “In most cases she (Armstrong) (Continued on page 5)

“The White Shield” is a collection of Myrtle Reed stories published after her death in 1911. The cover of Myrtle Reed’s “A Spinner in the Sun” contains a bit of a mystery. The Margaret Armstrong illustration is signed “SH.” Authors of a book on Armstrong covers wonder if “SH” was someone who adapted Authors of a book on Margaret Armstrong covers the similar, original illustration surmise that “SH” reworked an earlier and slightly by Armstrong. different image created by Armstrong.

Margaret Armstrong signed some of her works with her initials, “MA.” Armstrong began signing some books, but not all, after other illustrators began imitating her style.

could follow her own wishes, but occasionally was called upon to match her style to that of the author, which might be terrible. Thus, the saccharin mauve color which she devised for the first Myrtle Reed novel was so exactly right that she had to perpetuate it with variations through all the rest of that immensely popular and longforgotten author’s string of works.” Reed, from her perspective, lamented to readers that she had no influence on the covers, saying she was only the “little bird” that wrote them. Whether or not the author and illustrator were happy about being matched up by Putnams, the combination helped both careers. Reed titles from 1898 to 1911 remain collectible. Moyer pointed to a shelf space that once held as many as 25 of Reed’s books. He has since sold out. Biographies on Armstrong nearly always list her Myrtle Reed covers. The Reed bindings, includ-

ing “The Master’s Violin” and “At the Sign of the Jack O’Lantern,” were mostly a light blue to mauve color with gold letters. In some cases, one or two other colors of ink were also used. On “The Master of the Vineyard,” for example, the grapes are a deep purple. Some books came in red, pale gray, brown suede leather and dark blue. Many came with slip cases matching the cover. In her 40s, Armstrong took fewer illustrating jobs in order to travel and concentrate on her own books, including “The Field Book of Western Wildflowers” and those of her father and brother. At least two universities have featured Margaret Armstrong covers in exhibitions, including the University of Rochester and George Mason University. Identifying Armstrong’s works becomes difficult when, in addition to the unsigned covers, at least one Reed title, “A Spinner in the Sun,” contains the initials “SH.” The mysterious change of initials, along

with the imitators’ works, makes research advisable for positive identification. In 1968, Charles B. Gullans and John Jenkins Espey published a useful resource, titled, “Margaret Armstrong and American Trade Bindings: With a Checklist of Her Designed Bindings and Covers.” The authors, in an

introduction to a 1991 edition, said when they first wrote the book, they had no idea that the price of books with Margaret Armstrong covers, which then sold for between 50 cents to $1.50, would rise to $20 and higher. In 2011, Nabu Press printed a trade paperback edition of the Gullans and Espey work.

Where Have All The Matches Gone? Anything one can think of has been advertised on a match. From the John F. Kennedy administration through the Carter administration, the White House gave out presidential matchcovers with the White House, the president’s name, and the Presidential seal at all official White House dinners. Matchcovers are small souvenirs that people like to take home as a remembrance of a great meal or a special occasion. Many are kept in baskets or glass containers on coffee tables or shelves and live on for visitors to view and ask about. The business cards that have, to some degree, replaced the matches are either thrown in a drawer or the information on them is input into iPhones or Blackberries and the cards are discarded. Philluminists, a name for match collectors that loosely translates to “lovers of light,” have nurtured their hobby for more than 85 years. Matchcover collecting is a rather inexpensive hobby. Most matches are

made in large quantities, some in the millions, so, unless it’s quite rare, most matchcovers have very little value. One rare cover, given out at a dinner at the Hotel Aster in New York City in 1927 to honor Charles Lindburgh after he flew solo across the Atlantic, sold for $4,000 at auction in 1993. Only seven of them are know to exist. There are collecting clubs in many cities around the country (Continued on page 9)

Ten years later, a salesman for the Diamond Match Company came up with the idea of putting advertising on matchcovers and sold a six million cover order to the Pabst Blue Ribbon beer company. This was to be the start of an industry that at one time numbered more than 100 matchproducing companies in the United States. There was a time when you could walk into any business, restaurant, hotel, bank and be able to pick up a match that advertised them. Sadly, the introduction of the cheap throw-away lighter and the match’s association with smoking spelled the decline of this once-prosperous industry. Since many places are nonsmoking, due to the bans on smoking, business owners no longer see the need to buy matches to advertise their establishments. They’ve come to only associate matches with smoking and no longer see them as a very inexpensive means of getting their business more known to the public. In the author’s opinion this is very By Joe DeGennaro

AUGUST 20th 2013 - POSTCARDS

Morphy’s August 20th auction features a stellar postcard collection of over 200 lots which is vast and covers nearly every category of postcards. There are several hundred Halloween cards by Tuck, Winsch, International Art and many other publishers. One highlight is a card by Ellen Clapsaddle that depicts an African American boy dressed as a ghost holding a pumpkin head. His arm can be moved to cover and uncover his face with the pumpkin. If you are a Christmas fanatic then don’t miss the thousands of Christmas postcards as well, many featuring Santa.

Some specialty cards include hold-to-mirror, mechanical, open-ups, leather, real hair and just about every category imaginable. Check out the online catalog for more fantastic postcards! www.morphyauctions.com

Other highlights include a group of Schmucker Butterfly girls, numerous hold-to-light cards and thousands of real photo cards. There are real photo cards featuring baseball players, baseball teams, race cars, airplanes, ships, trains and many other subjects.

(That’s an extremely abbreviated history!) Many antique and vintage postcards have been reproduced throughout the years, and some of those reproductions were never meant to deceive collectors. On the other hand, more valuable postcards have been copied and misrepresented as authentically old examples. There are some clues to help distinguish the difference, or at the very least, to give buyers enough pause for further investigation. You can start with a simple visual exam. Does the back of the postcard show any traces of another postcard’s image? When a valuable antique postcard is reproduced, the printer will most likely make multiple copies and try to sell them

through different venues. Many times, the cards will be stacked before the fronts are completely dry, and colors or partial images of pictures or print can be seen on the backs. The different printing process of a hundred years ago made it impossible for images to transfer. Postcards were cut from sheets after the ink dried, eliminating the possibility of color or (Continued on page 22)

Postcards go far beyond being an inexpensive means of communication; they are pieces of history, miniature works of art, holiday celebrations, photographic records, and so much more. The focus of a collection can be anything from a particular holiday, to those created by a certain artist, to political cards. One friend of mine collects antique postcards showing the main streets of small U.S. towns, while another enjoys Victorian Santa cards. A collection can be as focused or as broad as the collector chooses. United States postcards have a long, colorful history dating back to the mid-19th century. While the first known US postcard was mailed in the mid1800s, it had no images and there

Fooled By Fakes (Continued from page 16)

print transfer. Another mistake that can come from modern printing is misaligned stamp sections; you may only see a portion of the stamp area printed on the card. Bright image colors are red flags. Antique postcards had muted tones and were not vivid, so bright colors would indicate a contemporary card. Another telltale sign is how the ink was applied; if you can erase the print off of a postcard, it’s not an antique. Old printing processes soaked ink into the paper, so an eraser wouldn’t be able to remove print the way it can with a card printed in modern times, where the print merely lies on the surface. Should the particular postcard you’re looking at have a border? If it should and doesn’t, someone may have clipped the border off to eliminate a modern printer’s mark. If it doesn’t and should, it’s either a reproduction or has been

altered, which will lower its value. Finally, take note as to whether the card you’re looking at should be embossed. Fakers generally print cards without embossing them, but some antique postcards had raised areas, particularly old Halloween cards, which can carry hefty price tags. A good reference book can help you with that determination. When fraudsters create many copies of valuable postcards, they typically try to sell them through different venues, whether online or at flea markets, postcard shows, or in shops. However, there have been cases where one person has a number of identical reproduced “antique” postcards in such good condition that an unwary buyer may think he hit the jackpot. A story usually accompanies these too-good-tobe-true finds, most likely having to do with an incredible untouched stash found tucked away in boxes from an old general store or in great-grandpa’s attic. While some unique finds like this can very rarely happen, it’s best to treat such stories with caution and test the cards carefully. You may be able to find numbers of unused vintage postcards, particularly chrome and linen examples, because they were sold to dealers in large lots, but this wasn’t the

Postcard backs can be even more helpful in recognizing a reproduction than the images on the front. Look for small print that may have the name of a contemporary printing company. The design of the postcard back is also important. They changed throughout the years, so the style should match the time period it’s purportedly from. Also, different printers used different print styles on the back, so if you have a group of cards that should be from different printers but they all have the exact same back, you have a batch of modern reproductions. The Metropolitan Postcard Club of New York City (http://www.metropostcard.com) has a wonderful guide to printing techniques used through the years on their website. Some old photo postcards (called Real Photo Postcards or RPPCs, which are photographic images of people and places) are being reproduced and sold as authentic pieces. You can tell modern reproductions because although they appear to be photographs at first glance, a magnifier will show the telltale dots of contemporary printing. The pictures on actual RPPCs are solid, with no dots. You’ll find a lot of these repros being sold online because it’s harder for buyers to see the dots unless the site has a good magnification tool. Besides using reliable reference books, the best way to

become knowledgeable in identifying reproduction postcards is to compare authentic pieces to repros side by side; the differences will pop, and you’ll start recognizing reproductions on their own. As with everything, there are exceptions to every rule, but these guidelines will help in the vast majority of cases. Join a postcard collecting club to network with fellow collectors and get some hands-on experience. There are many such societies and clubs from Hawaii to New York who welcome new members. All photos are via Wikipedia. At A Glance: Signs of a Reproduction: 1. Print that comes off with an eraser. 2. Postcard backs with color or print “ghosts” from another card. 3. Bright or neon colors. 4. Misaligned or cut off portions of stamp areas. 5. RPPC with printing dots. 6. Purportedly antique postcards in mint condition should raise a flag of caution. Reference books, websites, and collecting groups are the best ways to keep from being fooled by fakes.
