After his collection was seized on Kristallnacht by the Nazis and Sachs was sent to a concentration camp, who could imagine that more than 4,000 pieces, some of which are believed to be the sole known examples of their kind, would survive and go up for auction nearly 75 years later? This is just what happened this January, after Sachs’ son retrieved his father’s collection following a seven-year court battle with a German national museum. One-third of the Dr. Hans Sachs Collection fetched approximately $2.5 million after Guernsey’s Auction House conducted the first of three separate sales of the rare posters. See page 4 to read about this incredible story of a passionate collector and a dedicated son’s efforts to recover his father’s legacy.

r. Hans Sacs - a person whose lifelong passion the readers of PACM can certainly appreciate! Starting a poster collection as a teenager, Dr. Sachs amassed more than 12,000 posters and 18,000 smaller pieces in the field of applied graphic art, covering the topics of art, propaganda and politics, entertainment, travel, and consumer products. He started the first poster collecting society and published an international magazine devoted to the subject.

Posters From Historic Dr. Hans Sachs Collection Sold At Five Times Estimated Values In January, Guernsey’s Auction House in New York City conducted the first of three separate sales of thousands of rare collectible posters seized by the Nazis from collector Dr. Hans Sachs in 1938. Recently returned to Peter Sachs, the son of Dr. Hans Sachs, Guernsey’s auctioned 1,233 lots of the more than 4,000 posters recently retrieved from Germany after seven long years of legal battles initiated by the Sachs family. The first group of posters from the collection was auctioned to the public over the course of three days, fetching approximately $2.5 million dollars. Arlan Ettinger, President of Guernsey’s, was quite pleased

but not at all surprised by the turnout and response. “People recognized and appreciated the historic significance of this collection. There was excitement in the air and even cheering during a few moments when various members of Dr. Hans Sachs’ family including his son-in-law and granddaughter spoke. The Bohemian National Hall where the auction took place was packed with enthusiastic bidders, the telephone lines were busy throughout the entire threeday auction series and scores of people were bidding internationally via LiveAuctioneers.com,” he states. Top-selling lots included: Kunstsalon Aktuaryus circa 1900, by an anonymous artist known only by the initials E.L., for $57,950; Moderne Galerie circa 1901 by Fritz Behn for

Auction drew museum representatives and dealers from around the globe, with many commenting on how they had never before seen so many dealers and art world representatives come together for a poster auction previously. Arlan Ettinger anticipates an even greater turnout for the upcoming auctions featuring the remainder of the Sachs collection stating, “We divided the 4,000 posters into three groups,

A popular theme of the three-day auction series were posters from the Vienna Secession movement of the early 1900s, a movement that included painters, sculptors and architects, including Gustav Klimt, one of the founders and the group’s first president. each of which contain posters of varied value, rarity and subject matter. We tried to break the posters up in as even a manner as possible to produce three auctions that accurately represent the diversity, uniqueness and historical significance of the Dr. Hans Sachs Collection.” With two more auctions on

the horizon, the public still has ample opportunity to own a piece from this world-famous collection of posters, the largest of its kind in existence. Dates for the next auctions will be set within the coming months and as with the first round of auctions, the remainder of the Sachs posters will be sold with no reserves. The Sachs Poster Collection is universally described as being the most significant collection of its type in existence. Dr. Hans Sachs amassed an extensive collection of posters spanning categories including art, propaganda, politics, entertainment (from cabarets and dining to opera and early film), travel, sports, consumer products (from cigarettes to the first automobiles), to scenes of war. His collection included works by notable artists such as Mucha, Steinlen,

In addition to amassing the most extensive collection of posters in the world, Dr. Sachs had also created a meticulous method to manage, file and keep track of what were substantial masses of paper, often of mammoth dimensions. posters as well as commercial ones, including rare early Nazi party propaganda, which was of particular interest, as he was planning a new museum dedicated to what he referred to as “business art.” Dr. Sachs was then placed in a concentration camp. With the help of family and friends, he was able to gain his release from the camp, but he never saw nor heard of his massive poster collection again and believed that the collection was likely destroyed by Nazis. In August of 1956, now living in the United States, Dr. Sachs reached out to the Director of Public Education in Berlin’s West sector. He received the following reply: “We do not have any part of your famous poster collection and it is impossible to give you a positive answer on that score. We only know that the collection was not sent to the Museum for Arts and Crafts, whose very

Sadly, Dr. Sachs went to his grave in 1974, never seeing his collection again. In 2005, his son Peter Sachs, a retired airline pilot living in Florida, decided that he would look into the matter further, hoping to uncover at least a portion of his father’s legacy. Thanks to the Internet, researching items seized during World War II had become significantly easier, and Peter quickly discovered that a portion of his deceased father’s poster collection was in fact being housed at the German Historical Museum. He immediately enlisted the help of attorneys specializing in restitution cases to negotiate the return of what was left of his father’s collection, but the museum wanted no part of any negotiations and refused to cooperate. “We naively hoped that the museum would abide by the Washington Principals, but it certainly did not (Continued on page 22)

Leyendecker, Christy and Flagg among others. Dr. Hans Sachs first discovered his love of posters in high school while visiting a friend who had decorated the walls of his bedroom with advertising posters he had acquired in the waiting rooms of railway stations. Dr. Sachs, then a student himself, developed an instant love for the relatively new form of advertising, despite the fact that at the time, such posters were viewed as temporary and disposable. Dr. Sachs perceived them as art, and treated them accordingly. Around the time of Dr. Sachs’ discovery of posters, his father happened to receive three posters featuring Sarah Bernhardt from a friend in Paris, advertising each of her performances as “Gismonda,” “Lorencaccio,” and “Les Dame aux Camelias.” Those three icon-

We assume, however, that the whole collection was stored in the building next to the museum which was formerly the Gestapo Headquarters and which was totally demolished during the war. As far as any objects that might have been left there are concerned, these were completely cleared out by the first Army of Occupation.” Dr. Sachs was thus left to believe that unfortunately, all hope of ever recovering any portion of his entire collection had vanished and that in all probability would, “… be forever lost to the world of graphic art.” In 1966, Dr. Sachs discovered United States Official War Films, that part of his collection had sur- circa 1917, Kerr.

Heritage Auctions Offers Weekly Sunday Internet Movie Poster Auctions The Oscars may have come and gone, but for collectors of movie memorabilia it’s a neverending search for the latest blockbuster for their collection. Sometimes the values for the best vintage movie posters sold at auction can be a bit intimidating to new collectors: $388,375 for a three sheet movie poster for “King Kong”; $35,850 for a poster from “The American Venus”; or $191,200 for an insert

Smith said the weekly Sunday Internet Movie Poster Auctions average about 500 lots each and are curated with a consideration for the collector’s eye. Each auction has a nice mix of popular genres, as well as vintage and popular contemporary posters. “We offer a cross section,” said Bruce Carteron, auc-

most popular films: A 1962 Italian 4-folio reissue for “Casablanca” sold for $8,962, and a 1937 “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs” poster sold for $8,962. Collectors are willing to pay big dollars for monster movie posters, with a “Creature From the Black Lagoon” one sheet bringing $6,572, a poster for “Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein” selling for $3,943, and an insert for 1942’s “Ghost of Frankenstein” reaching $3,737. However, for every poster worth thousands, there exist posters snapped up for pennies on the dollar, Smith said. “We get great posters in these auctions, but there are always deals to be had,” Smith said. “There are a number that are just absolute bargains, and that’s OK. Auctions are meant to have deals in them....” According to statistics available on www.ha.com, Heritage has sold more than 156,000 posters through its Internet and final session auctions, including its weekly Sunday Internet Movie

Thelma Todd may have been a brief shooting star in Hollywood history, but collectors certainly remember her, avidly pursuing all memorabilia from the life of the vaunted “Ice Cream Blonde.” Thelma Alice Todd was born in Lawrence, Massachusetts, on July 29, 1906, the daughter of John and Alice (Edwards) Todd. A one-time schoolteacher and part-time model, Todd began entering beauty contests at the insistence of her mother, eventually winning the Miss Massachusetts crown in 1925. Spotted by a talent scout, the young, vivacious Todd was brought to Hollywood in 1926 where she appeared as Lorraine Lane in her first film, “Fascinating Youth,” a romantic comedy starring Charles “Buddy” Rogers and Ivy Harris. Other roles followed, including small parts in “Rubber Heels” (1927), “The Noose” (1928), “Seven Footprints to Satan” (1929) and “The Bachelor Girl” (1929). Producer Hal Roach recognized the natural comedienne in Todd, signing the effervescent blonde to a screen contract where she began appearing in

Thelma Todd, who had appeared in over 115 films during her nearly ten-year career in Hollywood, was found dead in her car inside the garage of former actress Jewel Carmen on Monday, December 16, 1935. Located approximately one block from her successful restaurant, Thelma Todd’s Sidewalk Café in Pacific Palisades, California, the death scene was investigated by the Los Angles Police Department, whose detectives concluded that Todd had died of accidental carbon monoxide poisoning. Later, a grand jury ruled Todd’s death a suicide. Friends and family, however, suspected foul play in Todd’s untimely death at age 29, believing the actress and restaurant owner had been a target of extortion by underworld interests. Postcards Galore At The Spring Allentown Paper Show The Allentown Antique Book, Paper, and Advertising Show has something for everyone, but postcard collectors will have tables full of their favorite collectible, offered by dozens of specialty dealers on Saturday, April 27, and Sunday April 28, in the Agricultural Hall at the Allentown Fairgrounds, Allentown, Pennsylvania. Head straight to “Postcard Row,” where knowledgeable dealers have organized thousands of these small treasures, pull up a chair, and enjoy the great selection of view cards,

greetings, artist-signed, topicals and more. You don’t need to be an expert in deltiology (the collecting and study of postcards) to appreciate the fun and affordable nature of postcards. Novelty postcards, such as mechanical cards with moving parts or cut-outs to hold up to the light, are just two types of specialty cards. Vividly colored linen postcards, printed from the 1930s through late 1940s, provide nostalgic views of roadside gas stations, diners and motels as well as a multitude of other subjects. The pos-

sibilities of topics, styles and views make this an exciting collecting field. The Allentown Paper Show brings great ephemera to all collectors, including desirable autographs, decorative stock certificates and bonds, calendars, catalogs, delightful children’s books, cookbooks, folk art, fraktur, letters, magazines, maps, photographs, political pins, postal history, posters, prints, sheet music, stereoviews, theatre programs, and many other vintage paper items. Antique advertising choices range from colorful

signs and salesman’s samples to boxes, bottles and tins that held tobacco, medicine, toiletries, food or cleaning agents. With 170 booths of quality dealers, this show is a must-see. Show hours are Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 3p.m., in the Agricultural Hall at the Allentown Fairgrounds, located at 1929 Chew Street. For more information, call Sean Klutinoty, (610) 573-4969 or e-mail: allentownpapershow@gmail. com. The website is www.allen townpapershow.com.

Hollywood (Continued from page 16)

death of Thelma Todd all add to the allure of the actress among fans and collectors today. Todd represents a slice of the old, shadowy Hollywood glitz and glitter, a popular performer who appeared in both silent and sound pictures. Autographed Thelma Todd material is always huge with collectors. A 10x13-inch publicity portrait snapped by famed Hal Roach Studios photographer Bud “Stax” Graves came up for auction in November 2012 at Heritage Auctions. Signed in white ink by the blonde actress: “To Sergeant Caldwell, ‘Take the Stand’, with my good wishes, Thelma Todd & Gallant,” this gem in very fine+ condition brought a top bid of $746.88. Fred “Sergeant” Caldwell, the subject of the inscription, was a journeyman film grip and technician who had worked with Todd on the 1934 film “Take the Stand.” The “Gallant” in the inscription refers to Todd’s dog, who is included in the portrait. Thelma Todd inked her signature on a number of official Hollywood documents during her film career. One letter on Hal Roach Studios, Inc. letterhead dated October 5, 1933, bearing Todd’s signature authorizes the use of her image for publicity and advertising purposes only. This letter was brought to auction with

a signed letter from ZaSu Pitts, with the lot fetching a winning bid of $131.45. Of special interest to collectors are the many original movie stills and studio portraits which capture the Hollywood essence and glamour of Thelma Todd. George Hurrell is one of the big names in old Hollywood studio photography, with one of his early 1930s MGM 10x13-inch portraits of Thelma Todd in very fine con-

dition bringing $537.75 at auction. Hurrell’s embossed photographer stamp appears on the bottom right of the portrait along with his stamped credit on the back. Elmer Fryer is another solid name in vintage Hollywood photography, with one of his 1931 11x14-inch portraits of Thelma Todd in near mint condition selling for $310.70 at auction. Fryer had snapped this beautiful portrait of a smiling, radiant Todd for First National Pictures around

Harold Dean Carsey is yet another talented Hollywood photographer from the glory years of Tinseltown. One of his 11x14inch portraits of Todd circa the late 1920s in very fine/near mint condition was sold at auction for $334.60. Another Carsey 11x14inch portrait of “Hot Toddy” from the early 1930s in very fine/near mint condition brought $179.25 at auction. Thelma Todd movie promotional items are also in demand. They include posters, lobby cards, campaign books and press sheets, all of which are in scarce supply today. Regarding the latter, a press sheet from the 1934 Thelma Todd/Patsy Kelly comedy short “One-Horse Farmers” in folded very fine+ condition sold at auction for a reasonable $36. One of the more coveted movie lobby cards of Todd’s career comes from the 1931 comedy film classic “Monkey Business,” starring the incomparable Marx Brothers. Once on prominent display in movie lobbies - hence the name - this 11x14inch card features Thelma Todd frolicking with legendary funnyman Groucho Marx. One example in fine/very fine condition brought a top bid of $3,346 at auction. (Auction results and photos courtesy Heritage Auctions, Dallas, Texas.)

turn out that way,” explains Cindy Schlanger, one of the attorneys from the Osen firm that the Sachs family retained. The museum never disputed that Dr. Sachs had collected the posters or that the Nazis had taken them, but they argued that because Dr. Sachs had accepted some monetary compensation from the West German government for the seizure of the collection, they felt that the Sachs family no longer had any legal claim or right to ownership. A lengthy seven-year court battle ensued, traveling through all three levels of Germany’s courts, with the highest court finally awarding the Sachs family with the return of the remaining posters. Today, the rarity of these posters is such that some are believed to be the sole known examples in the world of particular images. Guernsey’s Auction House is known for such extraordinary events as the Titanic, John F. Kennedy, Elvis Presley, The Beatles, Mickey Mantle and Princess Diana. All are invited to attend the upcoming Sachs Poster Collection Auctions later in 2013. Visit www.guernseys.com; call (212) 794-2280; or email aettinger@guernseys.com for more information.
