As summer hits its full stride, one of the topics we explore in this current issue of PACM is the history behind U.S. victory bonds of both World War I and II. Author Roy Nuhn explains the various patriotic posters, stamps and postcards from these eras, all today highly collected memorabilia. Along with these things, the selling of Liberty Bonds was another critical way revenue was generated during both wars. The term Liberty Bonds was coined during World War I, and the program is considered to have been the first time in the nation’s history that the Federal Government went to the public for funds to fight a war. They were called Baby Bonds and Defense Savings Bonds during World War II. Posters encouraging citizens to purchase bonds were printed in high volume and arrays of artists were commissioned to do the artwork. We hope you find some of the history behind bond drives and the lasting memorabilia left from these challenging time periods as interesting as we do.

Buying Victory On The Homefront Bonds Of Two World orld Wars ars By Roy Nuhn

The tons of memorabilia created to help sell bonds during World Wars I and II started becoming collectibles over 50 years ago. Posters were the first to enjoy popularity, followed by pin-back buttons and souvenir postcards. Other ephemera soon began being collected, as well - handbills, magazine covers and advertisements, postal slogan cancels, and promotional literature, etc.

Coffin were just a few of the many to lend their talent and donate their time. Liberty Books, used to hold 25-cent War Savings stamps that when filled were turned in for a $25 bond, flooded the country. The public was urged to “Lick a stamp and lick the Kaiser!” Informational booklets also poured off of government presses to aid an army of volunteer bond salesmen and speakers. Postcards were issued by President Wilson’s administration as part of the dramatic appeal. Artists again contributed their skills toward creating many fascinating posterstyle cards. In addition, there were many other types of postal cards used. One sepia set, taken from

scale models of many of these ships in use for subscription drives were depicted on blackand-white photo postcards. Similar cards showed bond rallies, as well as celebrity and political speakers. Liberty Bond sales to homefront America from the five drives totaled $24 million, greatly surpassing original goals by more than one-third. The bond program was dis-

Throughout the 1917-1918 conflict, patriotic posters in great abundance were distributed nationwide to generate homefront support and steadfastness. Under the guidance of a federal agency headed by Charles Dana Gibson, the nation’s illustrators and painters were recruited to churn out patriotic posters, many of them for the Liberty Bond drives. Inscribed “U.S. Army Post Card” on the address side, the pictorials showcased the various implements of war being bought by Liberty Bond sales, such as howitzers and tanks. Captions, such as “Liberty Bonds will keep these howitzers thundering at the Huns,” emphasized the need for the folks back home to buy. of World War II. Many of these Savings Stamps booklets, as well as promotional literature window stickers and magazine advertisements, survived the passage of years to become today’s collectibles. The posters, once again created by the nation’s artists, now rank high on many want lists. Various patriotic symbols adorned the covers of the stamp albums, including the Minuteman of Revolutionary War fame and the American eagle. Military hardware, another favorite topic, included battleships of the line. Posters screaming out at

continued when World War I ended, the last drive occurring in April 1919 to generate funds to aid America’s war-weary allies. The selling of Liberty Bonds was the first time Washington had ever gone to the people for money to fight a war. Sales resumed nearly two decades later in March 1935 under a different name, “Baby Bonds.” On May 1, 1941, just prior to America’s entry into World War II, these were renamed “Defense Savings Bonds.” Several months later, when the U.S. went to war against Germany and Japan, the name changed again, this time to “War Savings Bonds,” often referred to simply as “War Bonds” by the media and public. After 1945, they were identified as “Savings Black-and-white photo postcard Bonds.” showing model of new U.S. Navy In many ways, memora- cruiser Indianapolis, named in honor bilia from the World War II of Marion County (July 4, 1909). bond program is in more demand than that of the earlier Americans to buy War Bonds conflict. War Bonds publicity and ephemera, as it did a generation earlier, touched nearly every aspect of daily life in wartime America. Matchbook covers, comic books, placards in store windows and on the outside of trolleys, and ink blotters were just a few ways the word was spread. About the Author: Larry Balawender is a Red Ryder collector and a fan and collector of B-Western movies and paper. Photography by Robert Stelma

(Continued from page 13)

In time, Red Ryder began to appear on wrist watches, work gloves, games and the Daisy Air Rifle with the name of the cowboy hero burned into the stock and sporting a saddle ring with a leather thong. The Daisy Company offered promotionals like the Daisy Handbooks, Nos. 1 and 2, which featured comic strips of Red Ryder and other comic strip heroes. Each handbook also included a Daisy Air Rifle catalog. Besides issuing other catalogs, Red also appeared in Daisy Air Rifle ads inside and on back covers of comic books. Besides the comic strip, no other avenue made Red Ryder more famous than his association with the Daisy Air Rifle. Then came the movies. In 1940, Republic Studios released a serial, “The Adventures of Red Ryder,” in 12 episodes, starring Don “Red” Barry as the

red haired hero and Tommy Cook as Little Beaver. The series was a big hit with western movie audiences and fans. About that time, Red rode the air waves with Reed Hadley portraying the cowboy on the radio. The huge success of the serial prompted Republic in 1944 to produce feature films of Red Ryder. The star of this series was Wild Bill Elliott as Red and Bobby Blake as his Navajo sidekick. More success for the studio as these movies were just as popular as the serial. In 1946, Elliott was replaced by Allan Lane in the role of Ryder and retaining Blake as Little Beaver. These fast-paced, well-produced features were also well received, but in 1948, Republic decided to end the series. In 1949, the last series of four Red Ryder movies was produced by Eagle Lion Productions and starred Jim Bannon as the cowboy hero and Don Kay Reynolds as his Indian sidekick. These features were shot in color.
