William F. Cody, famously known as Buffalo Bill, claims to have held many jobs: soldier, trapper, bullwhacker, “FiftyNiner,” Pony Express rider, wagonmaster, stagecoach driver, and hotel manager. Whether or not some of these were fabricated for publicity, it is easy to imagine that Buffalo Bill could do all of them, as the larger-than-life character lived an adventurous life before becoming world-famous for his Wild West shows. Bill’s shows toured the U.S. and Europe for more than 20 years , highlighting the American frontier with feats of skill, re-enactments, sideshows, and more—often performed by other historical icons like Annie Oakley, Frank Butler, and Sitting Bull. The show was a major draw at national celebrations, like the Chicago World’s Fair of 1893, even though it had not long before been featured in the 1889 in the Exposition Universelle in Paris. Bill performed for kings, queens, and other European royalty, as well as American icons and politicians. His character has lived on in literature, film, and television. With this kind of celebrity during and after his life, I suppose it is no wonder that five Buffalo Bill posters recently sold for $59,398 at a recent Philip Weiss Auctions event (See the story on pg. 4). His vibrant life and legacy are the fascinating tidbits in American history that we love to be reminded of—an exciting time when our nation was still being “discovered” and new wonders were waiting to be uncovered.

Five Buffalo Bill Posters Sell For A Combined $59,398 At Wild West And Circus Posters Auction The Wild West came charging into Long Island when a group of five Buffalo Bill posters fetched a combined $59,398 at an auction held on April 20 by Philip Weiss Auctions, in the firm’s new gallery located at 74 Merrick Road in Lynbrook, N.Y. The sale was a huge success, and a big boost for a company that was displaced in November by Hurricane Sandy.

real name was William F. Cody (1846-1917). The 1907 Courier litho, measuring 28 inches by 42 inches, showed an image of a running buffalo with a portrait bust of Col. Cody inset into the animal’s side. Expected to fetch $4,000, the poster hit a record $18,975. Following close behind was an exceedingly rare French poster showing Buffalo Bill, President William McKinley (elected in 1896) and two small vignettes (one for Cody Day at the Omaha Exposition of 1898 and one of an image of his first cabin). The 1899 litho, by Enquirer, had dates at the bottom (Sept. 18-20) for an appearance in Antwerp, Belgium. It rose to $17,825. 1907 Courier lithograph of Buffalo Bill as a bust portrait inset, on a running buffalo ($18,975).

The auction was dedicated almost entirely to rare and vintage posters, many of which were in remarkable condition. A small but high-quality collection of Wild West and circus posters headlined the event and in some cases brought record prices. World War I and II posters were also featured. In all, 296 lots changed hands in an auction that grossed around $185,000. Rare 1899 French portrait poster The top-selling Buffalo Bill of Buffalo Bill with President poster was an iconic image of McKinley and others ($17,825). the legendary soldier, bison hunter and showman whose Placing third was a classic, and perhaps the most formidable of all the Buffalo Bill posters. It was a rare threesheet version by Strobridge, printed in 1908 and showing a full-length rendering of Buffalo Bill on a horse. It was large, measuring 80 inches by 30 inches, and was in “apparent” (not examined out of the frame) A condition. The impressive poster sold for $13,800. Rounding out the group was a very early image of the Buffalo Bill Wild West cowboys on the prairie, by Forbes Company (Boston), executed circa 1880s ($5,463), and a poster titled “Highly Trained Texas Range and Ranch Horses” (Strobridge, 1907), advertising the Buffalo Bill Original circa 1930s Wild West Shows. American & English Classics Among Highlights Of Upcoming Literature Auction On Thursday, June 20, Swann Galleries will conduct an auction of 19th- and 20th-century literature that will feature fine examples of mystery and detective fiction, children’s literature and science fiction, as well as desirable editions of works by William Faulkner, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Ernest Hemingway, Mark Twain and original parts issued of Charles Dickens’ books. The item with the highest presale estimate is a superb first edition copy of “The Maltese Falcon” by Dashiell Hammett. This groundbreaking work of private-eye fiction is in the rare first issue pictorial dust jacket (estimate: $35,000 to $50,000). Also by Hammett are a first American edition of “The Glass Key” - used to illustrate the cover of the Swann auction catalog published in New York, 1931, three months after the first English edition ($8,000 to $12,000) and two first edition copies of “The Thin Man,” the author’s last novel, in different dust jackets ($3,000 to $4,000 and $3,500 to $5,000). Other

detective novels include Raymond Chandler’s “Farewell, My Lovely,” New York, 1940 ($3,500 to $5,000) and “The Lady in the Lake,” New York, 1943 ($3,000 to $4,000). Books of another popular genre—science fiction—are also featured. There is a copy of H.G. Wells’s exceedingly rare corner-

stone work, “The First Men in the Moon,” a remarkable example of the first printing in the dust jacket, London, 1901 ($18,000 to $25,000); as well as Arthur Conan Doyle’s “The Lost World,” in the nearly unattainable “ordinary edition,” London, 1912 ($6,000 to $9,000); and a signed limited “fireproof” asbestos edition of Ray Bradbury’s “Fahrenheit 451,” New York, 1953 ($6,000 to $9,000). Monster tales include two copies of Mary Shelley’s “Frankenstein,” a London 1931 edition, which was the first to appear in a single volume, first to be illustrated and first to credit her as the author ($3,000 to $4,000); the other a Photoplay edition in the scarce original dust jacket, New York, 1931 ($800 to $1,200). Also, a first edition of Wallace and Cooper’s novelization of “King Kong,” New York, 1932 ($3,500 to $5,000). In addition to Shelley, featured works by female authors Dashiell Hammett, “The Maltese are Gertrude Stein’s “Portrait of Falcon,” first edition, 1930 (esti- Mabel Dodge at the Villa Curonia,” privately printed in mate: $35,000 to $50,000).

Harper Lee, “To Kill a Mockingbird,” first edition, signed and inscribed in the year of publication, 1960 (estimate: $8,000 to $12,000).

Florence in 1912, one of 300 unnumbered copies, ex-collection Arthur Dove, the American abstract painter, and containing his signature ($6,000 to $9,000); a first edition of Willa Cather’s “O Pioneers!,” bearing her initials on the front free endpaper, 1913 ($2,000 to $3,000); a signed first edition of Margaret Mitchell’s “Gone With the Wind,” 1936 ($8,000 to (Continued on page 13)

$12,000); and an early presentation copy of Harper Lee’s beloved “To Kill a Mockingbird,” signed and inscribed in the year of publication, “To Miss Ethel, with love, Nelle Harper, September 17, 1960” ($8,000 to $12,000). The sale offers a wonderful selection of Hemingway, including his short stories, with one of only 300 copies of the first and only edition of his first book, “Three Stories & Ten Poems,” Paris, 1923 ($15,000 to $20,000). A run of works by Faulkner includes a first edition of his first novel, “Soldier’s Pay,” New York, 1926 ($15,000 to $20,000) and a first edition of “The Sound and the Fury,” in an entirely unrestored first issue dust jacket, New York, 1929 ($20,000 to $25,000). From Fitzgerald is a first edition of his final completed novel “Tender Is the Night,” in the first issue dust jacket, New York, 1934 ($8,000 to $12,000). There is a scarce advance copy of Graham Greene’s “Bright Rock,” an uncorrected proof with a short, signed presentation inscription by Greene on the title page, London, 1938 ($8,000 to $12,000). From the same era is a signed

among themselves was fierce. Various means were employed to gain the upper hand. Advertising soon became the main difference. At first, plain handbills were used, but clipper ship cards came into very heavy use around 1850 to the middle of the 1860s. These were usually 4 x 6.5 inches in size on cardboard stock, and were distributed to all possible customers and shippers. They were also openly placed in shops, inns and public buildings of all sorts. Such cards became more and more detailed, and more attractive, as competition among shipping lines increased. Lithographed in beautiful colors, a commodity not to be commonly seen for another half-century, they featured large illustrations of the ship itself, the merchant line’s flag or motif, and all sorts of promotional messages. These emphasized the low insurance rates available because of their safety record, the reputation of the commander, and the speed records broken. They also first edition of John Steinbeck’s masterpiece “The Grapes of Wrath,” with a typed letter signed from Ira Wolf recounting the story of the author’s signing of the book during a spirited evening at the Player’s Club, New York, 1939 ($12,000 to $18,000). A notable copy of Mark Twain’s “Adventures of Huckleberry Finn” is a first American edition, one of approximately 500 in the publisher’s deluxe Morocco binding, New York, 1885 ($8,000 to $12,000). The auction will begin at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, June 20. The works will be on public exhibition on Saturday, June 15, from noon to 5 p.m.; Monday, June 17, to Wednesday, June 19, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.; and Thursday, June 20, from 10 a.m. to noon. An illustrated catalog with information on bidding by mail or fax is available for $35 from Swann Galleries, 104 East 25th Street, New York, NY 10010, or online at www.swanngalleries.com. For further information, and to arrange in advance to bid by telephone during the auction, please contact John Larson at (212) 254-4710, ext. 61, or via email at jlarson@swanngalleries.com. announced departure dates and destinations. A number of companies, such as Watson’s Press and Fred Roger, printed the cards used by ships sailing out of Boston Harbor. The situation was somewhat different in New York City, where the firm of Nesbitt & Co. did most of the business. Thousands of these Yankee Clipper ship cards survived, and today they are eagerly sought by collectors and historical buffs alike. Even though a large portion of them are in a couple of dozen historical societies and public museums, they do occasionally show up at antique shows and at auctions, including eBay. Of these thousands of surviving relics from the golden age of American sail, less than 1,000 different designs are known to exist and concern approximately 400 Clippers. A significantly

small number of such cards continue to remain in private hands, and there are undoubtedly many more buried and forgotten, awaiting discovery. The Yankee Clipper was an important participant in the saga of early American merchant marine history. Many generations ago, these famed vessels enjoyed a brief moment of glory sufficient to forever insure their place in the annals of the seas. As befitting a new nation straddling two of the world’s greatest oceans, eyes were cast upon these waters and interest in commerce and shipping became one of our nation’s dominating passions. America’s desire to rule the world’s shipping lanes culminated in the development of the mail packets, and then the clippers - sleek ships destined to outdistance the European (Continued on page 18)

The Yankee Clipper! Just to mention the name is enough to conjure up visions of sleek-hulled ships, with huge billowing sails in the wind, knifing through the icy blue waters carrying passengers and goods to a thousand ports around the world. And they had such exotic names: Syren, Queen of the Pacific, Emerald Isle, Bostonian, California, and Bunker Hill. The seamen who sailed them boasted of their speed, beauty, and grandeur wherever they made landfall. The pride of pre-Civil War America, the Yankee Clipper ship brought our nation to the attention of the world. Notwithstanding the romanticism and heroic nostalgia they always seem to invoke, the Yankee Clippers, when all is said and done, were merchant ships carrying cargo and passengers in order to earn huge profits for their owners. Though they easily eclipsed the traditional and pedestrian naval shipping competition of their time, the rivalry
