In recognition of National Postcard Week (NPCW), which runs from May 4 to 10, we celebrate the fun of Deltiology, the study of postcards. NPCW was created in 1911 to encourage the collecting, publishing, and mailing of postcards, so this month, we turn to frequent contributor Bob Dissinger as he examines cards heralding both the coming of spring and Pentecost or Pfingsten. Today, many Christians describe Pentecost as the “Birthday of the Church.” It takes place 50 days after Easter Sunday, celebrating the descent of the Holy Spirit.

Celebrating Pfingsten (Pentecost) Pentecost or, especially in England, Whitsun (White Sunday). Pentecost, as Christianity observes, is recognized seven weeks, or 50 days after Easter Sunday, and is described by many as the birthday of the church. In some German states, schools are closed for two weeks. When searching for postcards of Easter and Pentecost (Pfingsten), the former are found more often. I probably have approximately 600 to 700 Easter cards and only about 30 Pfingsten postcards. I would rate these cards as being uncommon. Putting aside the religious aspect...I have not looked for those card types...Pfingsten generally represents springtime and a time of greening and blooming in fields, woods, Elves celebrating Pfingsten. hills, mountains, bushes and Posted in Germany on June 8, By Bob Dissinger

On Saturday, May 24, at 1:00 p.m., the 22nd Annual Hollywood Poster Auction (www.hollywoodposterauc tion.com) will be held at Cinevent 46 (www.cine vent.com), the world’s largest movie memorabilia convention. There will be 815 lots of quality movie memorabilia sold, adding to the auction’s already impressive 21 year total of over seven million dollars from previous sales in New York City, Chicago, Los Angeles, and London. Some of the things that set the Hollywood Poster Auction apart from other successful movie memorabilia auctions is the fact that the auction is held at a well-attended movie memorabilia convention. It’s truly an auction run by collectors for collectors, specializing in vintage materials from the 1910s to l970s with something for every collector at every price.

Potential buyers have the opportunity to see and handle all items in the auction for a full day and a half before the event. The reputation for personalization has garnered a loyal following of both buyers and consignors who return year after year to participate in this annual event. This year there are some special collections being sold. More than 300 lots of vintage movie stills hand-picked by a veteran collector since 1938 will be offered. There will also be more than 400 vintage movie magazines from 1928 to the 1970s. As usual, there will be a great selection of movie posters and lobby cards as well as some WWI and WWII, advertising, rock-n-roll, circus, and sports posters included. For more information or for a full-color flyer, call 440-256-3660 or email Lastmo@aol.com.

“This is indisputably one of the most significant pieces of original comic art to ever surface,” said Todd Hignite, vice president of Heritage Auctions. “Up until the day I actually saw it and held it in my hands, I had a hard time believing it really existed. Since the consignor isn’t a collector, and therefore unknown to everyone in the hobby, it just wasn’t even known for sure this survived.” In 1983, on the afternoon that Trimpe handed over the piece of original art to the thenteenaged consignor as a souvenir of their visit that afternoon, neither had any idea that
