Featured this month is a story about a unique and rare plate block of four misprinted early 24-cent postage stamps known in the collecting community as the “Inverted Jenny.” They sold for nearly $5 million and set a record price for any U.S. philatelic item. The printing error on each stamp shows an image of a Curtis Jenny biplane upside down. It is believed that just a single sheet consisting of 100 of these “Inverted Jenny” stamps was made. They were printed in 1918.

rare items they wanted to buy, including a copy of the Declaration of Independence. It’s odd that noncollectors are spending millions on some of the greatest treasures. I’ve never seen anything like this in my 40 years in the hobby,” said Sundman. Sundman obtained the “Inverted Jenny” plate block in November of 2005 in a trade with Gross, who had purchased it only a few weeks earlier for a then-world record $2.97 million at a public auction in

in Portland, Ore. However, he recently received an unsolicited offer he couldn’t refuse. “It was the oddest transaction I’ve seen in stamps. Someone called me in late September and said he represents some people overseas who want to buy my Jenny block. He told me they are not collectors, just wealthy people who want to buy things,” said Sundman. “He revealed they had purchased a copy of the Magna Carta and had a list of other

New York. In exchange for the block, Sundman traded his onecent 1868 Z-Grill stamp that he acquired for $935,000 at a 1998 Siegel auction. Only two examples of that stamp are known; the other is owned by the New York Public Library. The historic swap, involving a total of five stamps with a combined face value of 97 cents in postage, was valued at the time at $6 million: $3 million for the “Inverted Jenny” plate block and $3 million for the 1868 one-cent Z Grill stamp. Sundman recently announced a reward on behalf of the American Philatelic Research Library (APRL) of up to $100,000 to locate the two still-missing “Inverted Jenny” stamps from a block of four stolen nearly 60 years ago. The block was owned at the time of the 1955 theft by Ethel B. McCoy of New York City, who later donated to the APRL two subsequently-recovered stamps and the legal rights to the other two.

Obtained in a 2005 swap of rare stamps with Wall Street bond trader William Gross, the unique plate block of four 1918 “Inverted Jenny” misprinted airmail stamps now has been sold by owner Donald J. SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 7, 2015

The unique plate block of four misprinted “Inverted Jenny” 1918 24-cent denomination airmail postage stamps were recently sold for a record price of more than $4.8 million by Donald Sundman, president of Mystic Stamp Company in Camden, N.Y. He obtained the famous stamps in 2005 in a swap with well-known Wall Street bond trader William Gross. “At the request of the purchaser, the exact price is not being disclosed; only that it was north of $4.8 million. This “Inverted Jenny” plate block sale is a record price for any U.S. philatelic item and the second highest price in the world ever paid for any philatelic item,” said Sundman. A plate block is four adjoining stamps with the printing press sheet’s unique plate number in the margin still affixed to it. Only one sheet comprised of 100 “Inverted Jenny” stamps was ever reported. The error shows a Curtis Jenny biplane mistakenly printed upside down in the center of each red, white, and blue stamp. Sundman had not been planning to sell the block, but instead intended to display it at an international gathering of collectors and dealers, the World Stamp Show-NY 2016, in New York City next May. He previously exhibited the “Inverted Jenny” plate block to long lines of viewers at the 2006 World Philatelic Exhibition in Washington, D.C., and at the 2007 American Philatelic Society convention

Victorian Advertising Art Tobacco Cards Of The 19th Century Though smoking is certainly hazardous to one’s health, collecting the many wonderful pictorial insert cards that once, so long ago in Victorian times, were tucked inside each cigarette pack is both a safe and pleasurable hobby. Before 1880, Americans hand-rolled their own smokes. But a small number of newly established tobacco companies believed they could change the

The emergence of the American illustrator as a professional artist of the highest order and technical perfection of color lithography converged to make possible a wonderful array of beautiful cards picturing all aspects of late Victorian life in America during the last two decades of the 19th century. Tops in popularity were sport

public’s preference away from the traditional to something new: manufactured cigarettes in packs. Allen & Ginter, for instance, were soon selling theirs in small shell-and-slide boxes (10 cigarettes for 5 cents). Sales boomed! Soon machinery to roll and package the product replaced agile-fingered ladies working in small, private stalls who had done it by hand. Almost overnight, the American tobacco industry exploded in growth. By 1899, 2.5 billion cigarettes were being sold yearly. The competition for the consumer’s nickels and dimes became cutthroat as more and more companies entered the business. As early as 1885, manufacturers like Ginter, Duke and Kimball were stuffing small picture “Mabel Love” and “Beatrice Cameron” from cards into their Lorillard Sensation Cut Plug’s set of American packs as inducestage beauties in costume from their famous roles. ments to buyers. The many tobacco companies advertised the bounty to be found inside their cigarette packs by furnishing merchants with large, colorful banners. These were displayed in store windows and sizes ran from two to five feet long, with an approximate width of one foot. Pictured on the banners were reproductions of the “American Editors - 1st Series” (Allen & entire set of cards being Ginter). Shown is Jos. R. Hawley of the currently “Hartford (Conn.) Practically all of these pictorial cigarette cards, each measuring a bit less than 3-by-4-inches in size, came in sets of five, 50 or more, thus challenging smokers and others who were saving them to keep buying the same brands, as Ten from playing card set of 53 by Hard-a-Port well as to increase their smoking. They would be revived again, for a brief span of years just prior to World War I and during World War II. But most remarkable of all, the idea was reintroduced in the spring of 2001. Doral Lights cigarettes offered the “50 States Series to Celebrate America Collectors Cards,” which they proclaimed was “the first set of cards for the 21st century.” Available in select packs of cigarettes for only a short time, the promotion received much criticism. location. It was founded by Paul Gipstein and Arlene Shea. “Papermania is a fun show for new collectors, old nostalgic collectors and for serious collectors young at heart,” said Gipstein of Wethersfield, Conn., a show promoter and avid collector. “A show of this sort is like an invitation to an old-fashioned swap session. The kind where kids (and adults) have ‘tradesies’ for a chance to pick up a Topps baseball card of Ted Williams or a movie star poster Dixie Cup premium of Katherine Hepburn. You can search for a rare copy of a Mark Twain book, an 8-by10-inch glossy of Marilyn Monroe, or a Civil War picture, WWII insignias and combat ribbons. There are stereo view cards, stock certificates, and many kinds of eccentricities of interest to everyone,” stated Gipstein. “Buy back a memory” continues to be the show theme. Show hours will be from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Jan. 10 and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Jan. 11. There will be free appraisals on Sunday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. for up to five items in all categories. Guest appraiser Gary Sohmers will also be available to appraise pop culture collectibles and toys. Admission will be $8. Admission for senior citizens and college students will be half-price on Sunday. The next Papermania Plus Show will be held Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 22 and 23. For further information or directions, call Arlene Shea at 860-563-9975 or visit www.papermaniaplus.com.

Flamingo Announces Major Schedule Changes LLC is proud to announce that they are making some major changes to their schedule and expanding nationally in this curious economy of ours. “We’re starting our 21st year in show promotion and are entering a new phase of the business - promotion of vintage poster, print and photography fairs. This is the natural evolution of our shows, which have gone from antiques and collectibles to vintage books and paper to ephemera. Friends of ours have been promoting highly successful international vintage poster fairs for a number of years, and, to steal a line from one of my favorite movies, ‘They made us an offer we couldn’t refuse,’” stated company president Tina Bruno. announce that we have assumed management of the New York, Chicago and San Francisco International Vintage Poster Fairs previously managed by David Pollack and Gail Chisholm. Under their guidance, these shows have grown to include world-class exhibitors from the United States, Canada, Great Britain, and Europe and offer the finest original vintage posters of all genres and styles. These shows are fully vetted for authenticity by the International Vintage Poster Dealers Association (IVPDA). Both parties emphasize that there will be no disruptions in operation of the shows as a result of this arrangement. Booth assignments will be retained and the poster fair website, www.PosterFair.com, will remain. Additionally, both Pollack and Chisholm will remain as exhibitors and consultants of the shows. Tina emphasized that all the familiar and expected Flamingo features will be added, along with a move to expand the fairs to include fine vintage prints and photography. This change in management will begin with the next scheduled show, The Chicago

A full list of the poster fairs can be found at www.FlamingoEventz.com. But wait, there is more. In 2009 we introduced the Manhattan Vintage Book & Ephemera Fair as the Shadow Show to the well-known and established New York Antiquarian Book Fair in the N.Y. State Armory on Park Avenue. We established our show in The Altman Building on 18th Street, and, while a bit of a trip from the uptown armory, it has grown to become a highly successful show, both as a shadow show to the armory and as a stand-alone show on its own. Last year we introduced the Fine Press Book Fair as a companion show within the show to great acclaim. But, as is always the case when you least expect it, an opportunity to move was presented. We are very pleased to announce that we have moved these shows to a new location directly across the street from the N.Y. State Armory, The Church of St. Vincent Ferrer located at 869 Lexington Ave. at 66th Street. This places us just across the street from the Lexington Avenue entrance to the armory and affords us the opportunity to have all

exhibitors in one large room on a street level entrance. This move will offer both our exhibitors and customers an unparalleled shopping opportunity. The date for these shows will be Saturday, April 11. Just one more thing. With this expansion to national shows and the expansion to an international exhibitor and customer base, we have retained the services of a public relations agency with extensive experience in marketing antique shows, vintage book and ephemera fairs, and vintage poster fairs to oversee marketing and advertising of all our shows. This will further enhance our existing efforts and move our shows to a whole new level. “These moves are part of a continuing effort to constantly improve and add to our shows while making them of interest to an expanding audience,” said Tina. “We have no intention of slowing down or backing off this business, we love it and enjoy what we do. While we have eliminated some smaller local shows, we have already had dozens of exhibitors sign up for each of these shows, so we are confident that we’re making the right move,” continued Tina. Since 1978 we have housed an eclectic mix of 17th-20th century antiques, collectibles, paper and advertising items including over 2,000 historical documents. Thousands of photo archives depicting Hollywood celebrities, musicians of all genres, sports legends, and world leaders. Other items include first edition books, classic magazines, legal and illegal casino memorabilia, antique jewelry, Hummels, and vintage signs. “We are just temporary custodians of the artifacts,” says proprietor and resident researcher Jim Episale. It’s something that all of us, both young and old, can share, enjoy and treasure, we sell the objects that people throw away and thus help preserve the past.
