As Christmas and the New Year approach, a coating of snow is on the ground, and it is feeling like winter. In this month’s issue, postcard collector Bob Dissinger wrote a timely treatment on the subject of vintage New Year’s postcards (selections from his collection are illustrated). Also, inside is William Felchner’s Hollywood column feature about “The Man From U.N.C.L.E.,” one of TV’s popular spy series in the 1960s. Another feature is by frequent contributor Roy Nuhn and has to do with Kellogg’s collectibles and the advertising art of the Kellogg’s corporation over the past near century of existence. We hope the upcoming holidays treat you well. Looking forward to a great 2014! Enjoy.

Bringing In The New Year By Bob Dissinger

The New Year (January 1st) has been “brought in” over numerous centuries in various ways. Traditionally, in modern times it is celebrated with feasting, festivity, fun, frivolity, drinking, noisemaking, watching the clock, resolution making, lowering from on high items like glass balls, bolognas, pickles, goats and almost anything you can think of. Fortune, luck, and prosperity are the “hoped fors” in bringing in the New Year.

Some foods that are said to vary from locale to locale, prosperity. The four leaves on bring good luck, fortune, and state to state, and country to a clover represent faith, hope, prosperity to the consumer country. Pigs symbolize (Continued on page 5) are pork, black-eyed peas, rice, and doughnuts. Some symbols that represent good fortune, luck, and prosperity as seen on these postcards are pigs, horseshoes, mushrooms, four-leaf clovers, and gold coins. They

The Man From U.N.C.L.E. - TV Spy-Fi Memorabilia By William J. Felchner

TV spy shows made quite a big splash during the 1960s. Gracing the small screen were such memorable fare as the ultra-cool “I Spy” (1965-68), the raucous “Get Smart” (196570) and the very British “The Avengers” (1961-69). Also on the tube was the venerable “The Man From U.N.C.L.E.,” one of TV’s all-time great spy

series that populated the airwaves from 1964 to 1968. Created by Norman Felton and Sam Rolfe, “The Man From U.N.C.L.E.” starred Robert Vaughn as Napoleon Solo and David McCallum as Illya Kuryakin, two swinging spies who plied their trade worldwide as valued members

of U.N.C.L.E. - an acronym for the United Network Command for Law and Enforcement. Also on hand was Leo G. Carroll as Mr. Alexander Waverly, the British chief of U.N.C.L.E., which made its world headquarters in New York City. “The Man From U.N.C.L.E.” made its NBC-TV debut on September 22, 1964, with the episode “The Vulcan Affair.” In this pilot segment, super agents Solo and Kuryakin first lock horns with the international crime organization titled THRUSH, which is plotting an assassination targeting a delegation from the newly independent African nation of Western Natumba. Engineering the plot is American industrialist Andrew Vulcan (Fritz Weaver), who is secretly in the employ of THRUSH. The series had a total of 105 hour-long episodes. The popular

fantasy espionage series, often categorized as “spy-fi” today, featured an array of big-name guest stars, including Cesar Romero, William Shatner, Leslie Nielsen, Leonard Nimoy, Joan Collins, Broderick Crawford, Joan Blondell, Jack Palance, Kurt Russell, Elsa Lanchester, Julie London, Carroll O’Connor, Nancy Sinatra, Vincent Price, Janet Leigh and Angela Lansbury. “The Man From U.N.C.L.E.” also produced one made-for-TV reunion movie, “The Man From U.N.C.L.E.: The Fifteen Years Later Affair,” which was broadcast on April 5, 1983. In this outing, agents Solo and Kuryakin are “The Man From U.N.C.L.E.” Gold recalled to duty after THRUSH “The Man From U.N.C.L.E.” Gold Key comic book #18, May 1968. acquires a nuclear weapon, Key comic book #1, May 1965. demanding that a $350 million ransom be delivered within 72 hours by none other than Napoleon Solo himself. “The Man From U.N.C.L.E.” is one of the “biggies” among baby boomer TV show collectibles of the 1960s. It’s safe to say that MGM/Arena Productions satisfied the demand for U.N.C.L.E. merchandise during the show’s four-year run on the tube, duly licensing a vast series of official items produced by an array of companies. The list includes toys, lunchboxes, model kits, action figures, record albums, et al. Particularly impressive is The Man From U.N.C.L.E.’s paper Combination 1966 U.N.C.L.E. The 65th antique paper show is all about memorable items and documents, nostalgia, postcards, rare books, photography, movie star posters and old collectibles - just to mention a few. This extravaganza is scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 4 to 5, 2014, at the XL Center, Hartford, Conn. Considered the largest show of its kind in the Northeast, Papermania Plus boasts the finest grouping of more than 140 quality dealers from throughout the East Coast states, Michigan, Ohio, and Canada, with the “hottest” collectibles from A to Z: advertisements, Beatles, comics, Disney, Elvis and framed prints to maps, magazines, rare books, stamps, sheet music, tins, vintage valentines, World War ephemera and advertisement signs. It’s the largest show of its kind running continuously since 1976 at the same location, now called the Hartford XL Center. Gary Gipstein of Wethersfield, Conn., show producer and an avid collector himself, said “Papermania is a fun show for new collectors, old nostalgic collectors and for serious collectors young at heart.” Buy Back a Memory continues to be the show theme. Mr. Gipstein pointed out, “A show of this sort is like an invitation to an old-fashioned swap session...you know, the kind where kids (and adults) have ‘tradesies; for a chance to pick up a Topps Baseball Card of Ted Williams or a movie star Dixie Cup premium of Katherine Hepburn. You can also search for a mint copy of the first Superman comic book, an 8inch by 10-inch glossy of
