Think ahead to your future career You’ve probably been asked the question, “What do you want to be when you grow up?” all your life. But now the moment when your answer really means something is approaching. High school is a great time to start exploring your career possibilities.

Think about what you enjoy learning and what you’re good at.

If you’re like a lot of teens, you aren’t sure what you want to do. That’s OK! Many people change their minds multiple times. You can still begin thinking about and planning for your future.

Follow these steps

Explore your interests. Think about what you enjoy learning and what you’re good at. Try a variety of extracurricular activities to see which ones you like best. Then identify careers that are related to the subjects and activities you like best. Teachers, school counselors, and parents can help.

Do some research to learn more about those jobs. The Bureau of Labor Statistics (www.bls.gov) has resources that can help, such as Career Outlook and the Occupational Outlook Handbook.

Try it out. You might be able to job shadow someone who works in a field you’re interested in. Look into internships, which are temporary jobs designed to give students or recent graduates job training. Or apply for a part-time or summer job. Volunteering in your community is another great option.

Congratulations, Ethan!

Get training. The training you need depends on the career you want. Take classes in high school that prepare you for the next stage of your education. That might be a bachelor’s or associate’s degree from a college. Or it could be a vocational school or an apprenticeship program.

Start saving Having money saved to pay for schooling beyond high school — or for taking a “gap year” to figure out what you want to do — can expand your options. Make a deposit in your ORNL Federal Credit Union savings account to start saving for your future!

Avoid becoming a monster On Halloween night after the party has finished and you’re back home, it’s time to finally shed the monster costume. But after a look in the mirror, you could find that you still look like a monster after the costume has come off!

Have your bad habits turned you into a monster even after the holiday? You may be able to ditch your monster persona with these helpful tips: Zombie: Are you staying up late at night and looking eerily similar to the walking dead during the day? You may want to go to bed earlier each night. Avoid TV, phone, and computer screens for an hour before you go to bed so you can fall asleep more easily. Being well rested can help you learn and concentrate, stay healthier, and may even help acne and skin problems. Vampire: Spending all day inside? Your avoidance of the sun may have you looking more and more like a vampire each day. Get outside and enjoy some fresh air by finding a new outdoor activity. Try out a new sport, explore nearby nature trails, or find an outdoor rec program to get started. Ghost: Disappearing into your room often? Your family may think you’ve turned into a ghost. Hanging out with your family may seem boring, but it’s important to build a relationship with them. Your parents and siblings may be just the people to help you get through tough times when you need someone to talk to.

Helpful tips to avoid year-long monster habits.

Werewolf: Love staying out late with your friends? Running with the pack may have you turning into a werewolf. These late night returns may be affecting your life more than you know. By getting home earlier you have more time to prepare for the next day and get the sleep you need. Better yet, you won’t get in trouble for missing curfew!
