FRIENDS OF THE OLDHAM COUNTY PUBLIC LIBRARY April 13, 2011 The April 2011 General Meeting was called to order at 6:30 p.m. by President Tony Acree Present were the four officers and eight Friends of the Library, including Linda Goin, our speaker for the evening. Attendance sheet attached. Linda, who is Executive Director of Discover Downtown LaGrange, talked to the group about her organization's work in LaGrange involving tourism, economic revitalization, historic preservation and event creation and promotion. Minutes from the March 9 General Meeting were approved. Treasurer's Report: Carol Snyder reported that revenue from the Bookstore is down due to the low number of books in stock. Carol also reported that she obtained a price of $60.00 for a 2x5 foot outdoor banner with grommets. The banner is white with the Friends' name and a border in green. Connie moved that we order the banner and the motion passed unanimously. Committee Reports: Bookstore: Connie has contacted Bethany about getting more books from Half Price Bookse. Volunteers: -Sign-up sheets for volunteers to monitor the movies during the Summer Reading Program were available. After tonight's meeting these sheets will be given to Carol Braund. -Children's Services Librarian, Shannon Kruer, said the Friends may talk briefly to parents at the Story Hours to tell them about our organization. Old Business: Annice reported the death of Dr. Makk who had been mentioned at a previous meeting as a possible speaker. Annice said that his daughter-in-law, not his daughter as previously reported, had been the contact person for Dr. Makk.

Tony asked for any discussion on last month's request from Shannon Kruer that the Friends sponsor the Summer Reading Program Pool Parties. Annice moved that we sponsor the Pool Parties and the motion passed unanimously. Carol Snyder will contact Shannon and will ask about sponsorship publicity. New Business: Sally Lackner reported on the Annual Meeting of The Friends of Kentucky Libraries held in Lexington where she attended a KPLA meeting. She reported on topics discussed by the Friends groups in attendance, most of which were established in the 1960's & 70's. In response to her questions about establishing a Friends group with nonprofit status in Oldham County Sally was advised that: We need Bylaws in order to incorporate.. We may need to hire an attorney to help us incorporate. We can then apply for 501(c)(3) status. There is a time window to apply once incorporated. A committee to draft Bylaws was set up consisting of Connie Oldham, Sandy Thacker, Suzie Lloyd, Sally Lackner and Mary Wells. Connie reported that she decided to ask The Bank of Oldham County about setting up an account for the Friends. The bank will need a copy of Minutes showing that members have voted to withdraw our funds from the Library account in order to set up an account at their bank. Discussion involved the fact that this account will not be non-profit. Therefore people will no longer be able to deduct membership dues or donations on their income tax. Annice moved that we withdraw our funds and open a separate bank account. The motion passed on a vote of 9 for, 2 against and 1 abstaining. Tony designated Carol Snyder and Connie Oldham as co-signers on the new account. Linda Goin offered to contact James Daniel Ross, a Science Fiction writer, about speaking at our June 8 General Meeting. Members expressed interest in taking him to dinner that evening. The meeting was adjourned at 8:00 p.m. Respectfully Submitted, Mary Wells Secretary
