ucked on an isle between Normandy and Brittany is one of the most breathtaking examples of medieval architecture in the world, Mont Saint Michel. Unforgettable and completely mesmerizing, the ancient monastery is a true realm of fiction. A place that conjures images of Rapunzel’s tumbling locks of golden hair, and princes stealing kisses from spellbound beauties. Mont Saint Michel was historically a centre for spirituality, intellectual advancement, and a place of pilgrimage

by Chelsea Forman | travel columnist for believers in medieval times. For nearly one thousand years, people of all ages travelled to the island by roads called chemin de Paradis, or paths to paradise, looking for the assurance of eternity bestowed by the archangel of judgment. Today, the site is teeming with visitors exploring the pristinely preserved historical marvel. The site changes dramatically in appearance as a result of the bay having the highest tides in Europe – the ocean will move in and out eight miles with each tide cycle — all part of the magic that is Mont Saint Michel.

W H AT ’ S I N A N A M E Fondly referred to as la Merveille, or The Wonder by locals, Mont Saint Michel received its current name in the year 709. Legend says that the Archangel Saint Michael, leader of the armies of heaven, appeared before the bishop of Avranches and instructed him to build a church on this rocky islet.

Visit the abbey and experience the staggering detail of medieval architecture from the 11th to the 16th century. You can also attend mass daily, with the exception of Mondays.

Visit the four museums and learn about everything from the island’ ecology to the prisoners held captive in the dungeons.

Find one-of-a-kind buys in the several shops along Main Street. The jewellery is particularly noteworthy, men will enjoy browsing the mediaeval weapons for sale — but please, do not try and clear customs with these!

Kick your feet up over a meal and pint of beer at one of the several restaurants.

Explore the stunning natural beauty and greenery of the island.

new legacy maker has begun her journey as the newest Design Director of Tiffany & Co. Her name is Francesca Amfitheatrof. Being the first female Design Director in Tiffany’s 178-year history, Amfitheatrof had enormous shoes to fill. Her exceptional predecessor, John Loring, is infamously and forever linked to the global expansion of Tiffany, from six domestic stores to a global luxury brand which he continued to grow over the 35 years of his tenure. After a 4-year hiatus without a Design Director, times and outlooks are changing for Tiffany & Co.; as the company embraces Amfitheatrof at the design helm, as well as a new company president, Frederic Cumenel. Born in Tokyo, Amfitheatrof was exposed to an international lifestyle with an Italian fashion publicist mother and an American journalist father. Also residing in New York during her formative years, the city holds a certain nostalgia for Amfitheatrof, since she has recently moved from London to take her new place with Tiffany & Co., along with husband, Ben Curwin and their two children. Unquestionably, this is the career move of a lifetime and with her passion for and knowledge of the jewellery industry, Amfitheatrof truly was born for this role.

NICHE MAGAZINE travelled to NYC to meet Francesca Amfitheatrof, John Loring and other Tiffany & Co. executives so that we could share with you the inspiring story of Tiffany’s bright future.

rom early school years spent studying in New York to furthering studies in Italy and boarding school in England — moving was common with her father’s work position. Her journey into the arts began with introductory art courses at the Chelsea College of Arts where she learned the fundamentals of painting, textiles, printmaking, sculpture, fashion, graphic design and 3-D design. Leaving Amfitheatrof with an appetite to learn more and dig deeper into her fascination with the arts, she went on to receive her BA in jewellery design at London’s Central Saint Martins and then headed to The Royal College of Art, leaving her with a thorough understanding in the field. Making the move to Italy upon graduation, Amfitheatrof landed an apprenticeship with a master craftsman that allowed her to create her own handcrafted objects. With the knowledge and skills developed in Italy, Amfitheatrof returned to London and showcased her first collection at a friend’s gallery. It was evident when Karl Lagerfeld purchased some of her pots and renowned fashion houses like Chanel, Fendi and Alice Temperley were asking for signature pieces for their runway collections, that she was on the right track — the fast track to her bright future.

Embodying the power of the modern woman — Amfitheatrof ’s Tiffany T collection encompasses a bold, fresh NYC aesthetic with the quality and elegance of the brand’s DNA. Representing art, fashion, lifestyle and travel, Amfitheatrof ’s Tiffany T collection has become accepted, and celebrated, globally. The collection showcases Amfitheatrof ’s admiration with the innovative machine-age aesthetic of America in the 1940’s. 2015 marks a monumental moment for Amfitheatrof ’s career at Tiffany & Co. - designing her first Blue Book for the company titled The Art of the Sea. Evolving the design process to new innovative levels of creativity, Amfitheatrof always starts with a story; a story that leads to creations.

Taking her unique design aesthetic and injecting it with the essence of Tiffany, Amfitheatrof has elevated the Blue Book to a modernistic place of divine jewellery artistry. There is no question that Amfitheatrof understands the soul of the Tiffany brand. “For me, I think that everything has to have utter elegance. You have to have that balance of not going over the top, I think that’s Tiffany’.” Emulating the raw natural beauty of the sea and its rare bounty, the 2015 Blue Book consists of one-of-a-kind handcrafted pieces, sourced by Tiffany’s Chief Gemologist, Melvyn Kirtley, who worked alongside Amfitheatrof on her vision for the Blue Book collection. With a memorable trip to Basil, Kirtley looked at thousands of gemstones, choosing only those that exhibited precise elements and met strict standards of quality, fit for inclusion in Amfitheatrof ’s first Blue Book. “If we can’t find it, she will be thinking of other gems and stones of the same quality that can work.”

This sophisticated resort has been designed for international travellers looking for relaxation, privacy and pampering. The property marries modern amenities and comforts, with traditional Balinese architecture. The open air construction, gazebos with day beds, thatched roofs and infinity pool with swim up bar, create a soothing environment to unwind and connect with one’s self and nature. While the property itself is absolutely remarkable, it still dims in comparison to the natural setting, which is commonly described as “paradise on earth”. The resort embraces the jungle setting, seeking to complement its exquisiteness, and never trying to complete with it.

Oscar attended the Academy of San Fernando in Madrid, in hopes of pursuing his dream of becoming an abstract painter. While he attended the art school, de la Renta began sketching fashion illustrations for newspapers and fashion houses. Quickly the fashion world claimed him in and he left his studies at the Academy of San Fernando. Oscar’s growing interest in fashion led him to the start of his fashion career through an apprenticeship with one of the most esteemed fashion houses of the time, Balenciaga.

After working in Paris and meeting many of the fashion elite, Diana Vreeland convinced Oscar to go to New York and design for an American fashion house. LAST WORD:

O S C A R D E L A R E N TA

…on the topic of

THE MODERN WOMAN

We live in an era of globalization and the era of the woman. Never in the history of the world have women been more in control of their destiny. We’re dealing with sophisticated customers. What’s most important to these women is individuality.

In 1965 Oscar de la Renta launched his own ready-to-wear label. His line was easily recognizable for their delicate fabrics, soft silhouettes and vibrant colours. He quickly became internationally known, even dressing the stunning Jackie Kennedy. His ready-towear line became synonymous with casual luxury and each look Oscar designed was one with women in mind. He married his first wife, Francoise de Laglande, (editor-inchief of French Vogue) in 1967. Through this

38

fashionable marriage, Francoise was able to introduce Oscar to many more people in the fashion industry and his fashion house took off. Sadly his wife passed away in 1983, and in 1989, Oscar remarried, to a woman named Annette Engelhard. The influential women in Oscar’s life inspired him to dress beautiful and important women all over the world. Not only did he dress Jackie in the 1960’s, but also many of the later first ladies including Nancy Reagan, Hilary Clinton and Laura Bush.

O

scar de la Renta wasn’t just a great fashion designer. He also served as President for the Council of Fashion Designers of America from 1973-1976 and again from 1986-1988. He was honoured with the CFDA Lifetime Achievement Award in 1990 and was CFDA’s Designer of the Year in 2000 and again in 2007, tying with Marc Jacobs that year. Oscar de la Renta continued working into his eighties, even after being diagnosed with cancer. His life was filled with fascinating fabrics, fashion and people, and he believed in working for the arts. De la Renta not only served on the boards of the Metropolitan Opera and many other cultural institutions, but also supported many charities, specifically in his home country. When Oscar de la Renta passed away on October 20th 2014, the world did not only lose a renowned fashion designer, but also a kind and giving soul.

HELL HEELS by Tracey Drake JA N E G E R S H O N W E I T Z M A N ’ S

A RT & S O L E Shoes are everything — functional elements of living, fantastic fashion accessories, art and collectibles. For some reason, a beautiful shoe is always met with an unapologetic, visceral reaction from a shoe lover. So, it’s no surprise that Art & Sole, a book by Jane Gershon Weitzman (wife of shoe god Stuart Weitzman), is turning heads and taking up permanent residency on coffee tables around the globe - including mine.

WHEN STUART WEITZMAN OPENED THE FIRST BOUTIQUE ON MADISON AVENUE, ITS DISPLAYS OF SPECIALLY COMMISSIONED FANTASY SHOES QUICKLY BECAME A DESTINATION, DRAWING CROWDS FORM ALL OVER THE WORLD TO THOSE MAGICAL WINDOWS.

Art & Sole features 150 fantasy art shoes from the Stuart Weitzman Collection, each made of highly unique materials that Jane either discovered or commissioned. Made from feathers, paper, ceramic, metal, resin, playing cards, corrugated cardboard, Swarovski crystals, even fresh flowers and frosting, many of the shoes featured in Art & Sole are in printed form for the first time. These are just a few of my favourites from this gloriously glossy hard cover book…

Upon luring the two together, Allie and Noah walk home together, spending the night strolling through Seabrook. The disapproval of Allie’s family, particularly her father and the fact that WWII was happening, their love might have been eternal, but the socio-economic realities forced them to separate. Upon the heated argument and Noah leaving Allie’s home, Allie’s mother decides to pack and have the family move immediately back to Charleston. Unable to find Noah at his workplace before leaving, Allie tells Fin to pass on her message of love. Meanwhile, Allie has accepted a marriage proposal from another man, wealthy lawyer Lon who she treated while serving as a nurse in the war. One fateful day, Allie finds herself staring at the newspaper with Noah’s face and the Windsor Plantation house fixed to her previous specifications imagined, and instantly faints at the sight. Allie unexpectedly re-enters Noah’s life when she arrives at the house, and instantly they are both aware o ftheir love for one another.Allie must decide between her fiancé and Noah. Noah expresses his infinite love and how he wrote to her for a year with no response. Allie and Noah share a passionate moment and embrace each other as if they knew their love was never dimmed. Allie awakens to find her mother at Noah’s doorstep, telling Allie about a similar time in her own life when she too fell for a boy of lower class and hiding the Noah’s letters was for Allie’s own well-being. Allie’s mother hands her the 365 letters and leaves. Noah becomes frustrated with Allie’s unsureness and wants a definite answer from her, but mostly for her to just stay with him despite the fact that it will be hard. Allie panics and drives off to tell Lon what had happened. Upset with Allie’s behavior, Lon tells her she must make a decision. Allie returns to Noah and they envelope each other with arms and hearts wide open.

Being well versed in storytelling, Shaden encompasses a specific style to her fascinating work which she developed about six years ago, at the beginning of her photographic journey. Clearly evident from her collections, Shaden is drawn to the juxtaposition of darkness and beauty which is infused into her dynamic visual esthetic.

esembling art that comes from an unknown era, Shaden extends her timeless vision far beyond the realm of her camera. Encouraging others to step outside of their comfort zone and to create, Shaden also holds workshops and appears at conferences to talk about her creative process. By using photographic and painterly techniques, Shaden creates her own signature medium of self-portraiture which other artists admire. This keeps her workshops popular and fully booked. Clear intent on the stories within the images Shaden creates, she constantly stresses the meaning of knowing why you want to take that shot. Constructing sets and backdrops that radiate imagination and placing herself or a model into the whimsical picture truly captures an otherworldly essence. Brooke then adds further dimension to the image with multiple layers, resulting in the finished artistic vision.

A

s with any proper lady you must start at the beginning and unravel the layers, one by one, with time and care until you know her. But it’s worth the effort — Paris is the pinnacle of fashion holiness, built in its entirety with the care of an haute couture Christian Dior gown. To know her intimately and submerge in the magic, wonder and history of this city will likely be one of your most spectacular romances. It would take a lifetime to uncover all the secrets of Paris — so for now we’ll take a tour through her veins directly to her heart, the part that mothered Chanel, Louboutin, Louis Vuitton, and countless more, the chic world of Parisian fashion.

Paris is a city of layers — much like the dazzling madams who tromp her Avenues in layers of haute couture.

There are twenty neighbourhoods in Paris called arrondissements, each of which is made up of four more intimate neighbourhoods called quartiers. Every quartier is a slice of Paris, a little taste, holding one of the cities great treasures and drawing countless visitors. While all quartiers offer boutiques for purchasing a number of necessities or lustful must-have-now’s, the major shopping districts are just that: major. They will overwhelm and astound every first-time Paris shopper — even the most professional, Hermes carrying, Tiffany sparkling, red soled one. Begin slowly. Sit down over a cup of hot chocolate and get acquainted with the city. How she moves, smells, intoxicates. Your cup of hot chocolate is your initiation into the fashion world of Paris. I know — it sounds strange, humour me.

N I C H E travel

I

n the 1st arrondissement is a divine little tea salon called Angelina’s. From the time it opened in 1903 Angelina’s has served the most famous and delicious hot chocolate in the city — Chocolat l’African. Coco Chanel used to meander from her atelier to Angelina’s where she would sip hot chocolate. She created some of her most exquisite pieces over the delectable indulgence. Audrey Hepburn also insisted on visiting the little tea house for hot chocolate every time she was in the city.

A walk about Paris

will provide lessons in history, beauty, and in the

POINT OF LIFE. -THOMAS JEFFERSON

78

INSPIRATION 2015

Once you’ve finished your cup I recommend paying further homage to mademoiselle Chanel. An easy walk from Angelina’s is Place Vendôme, the landmark that inspired Chanel’s design of the falcon for her first fragrance, Chanel No 5. Immediately after this, and with Coco in your blood, it’s time to hit Chanel’s famed black and white flagship store on the Rue Cambon. This is a true fashionista’s wonderland. The stunning staircase that leads to the second story of the couture house is where Chanel used to sit and supervise her shows from. In front of the house is the fancy Ritz where Chanel lived for a period. With Chanel surrounding you in spirit and couture form, shopping may commence!

The 2nd and 9th arrondissements are the up and coming areas of Paris. Home to the Paris Stock Exchange, and shopping malls Printemps and Galeries Lafayette. Regardless of the fabulous malls, the location didn’t gain trending momentum until hoteliers began to develop on some of the untouched space. In addition to the superb malls the area south of Pigalle now boasts a number of delicious little boutiques, among which are plenty of vintage shops, drapery stores, fine home décor stores and Repetto’s (THE place to buy ballet flats in Paris).

While in the neighbourhood I recommend checking out the 19th century arcades, which are covered passages for shopping. They were originally designed to keep the mud streets dry for shoppers and were in actuality the very first forms of shopping malls. There were a total of 24 in the eighteen hundreds but only a handful remain. Galerie Vivienne is a particularly fab arcade located on the Rue Vivienne. The mosaic floor is absolutely outstanding and the shops are all very trendy. Jean Paul Gaultier was so smitten with this arcade he opened a boutique in it.

T

he Knights Templar was the first to set up house in what is now the 3rd arrondissements of Paris, also called the Upper Marias. The Knights drained the Marias swampland and built a quaint, walled village. The Upper Marias is now the fun, more colourful part of the city. The streets are of the last in Paris preserved from their original slim, winding, intriguing form — keeping traffic down and creating the perfect back drop for fantastic boutiques, cafes and hotels. One of the Royals of Parisian fashion, Christain Lacroix, made his architectural debut in the 3rd with his Hotel du Petit Moulin. He restructured the inside of an ancient bakery and created one of the most elite, posh, desirable hotels in the city. The façade of a bakery (sign and all) is sublime — and the interior is a flawless reflection of Lacroix’s defined, grandeur style on the runway. Hotel du petit Moulin is, naturally, booked solid most of the year.

It is simply impossible not to fall head over Jimmy Choo stilettos for the 6th arrondissement. This part of Paris has been the famed stage for a number of books including pieces by the genius Hemingway and F. Scott Fitzgerald. A variety of photo shoots and movies have also been shot in this lovely neighbourhood. It has always been home to Paris’s literary side with a number of publishing houses, book shops and cafes to sit and scribble ideas. The 6th has been the inspiration for several famed authors, and new writers flock to its streets every year in search of the same creative stimulation. The areas perfect combination of shops, streets and gardens and the chic architecture of the buildings make it feel like you have walked into the pages of some glorious French romance novel. The overall charm lured some of the fashion greats, including Louis Vuitton, into the neighbourhood — but they haven’t taken away the 6th title as Paris’s literary capital. A number of bookstores still line the roads, one of which is the must-not-miss 7L (said C’est Elle). Located below his studio in Saint Germain’s, is Karl Lagerfeld’s bookstore. Yes, that’s right, just when you couldn’t adore the 6th anymore. 7L is Lagerfeld’s mark on the literary world! The 6th has become a casual fashion hotspot, casual meaning you won’t ever have the feeling you’re not dressed right — making it the perfect place for casual browsing, and people watching, before glamming up and hitting our final arrondissement. 80

INSPIRATION 2015

The 8th. What dreams of shopping in Paris are made of — the haute couture runway that is Avenue Montaigne. This is where the stunning Parisian woman struts in and out of the most luxurious boutiques in a hot, delish mix of the dreamiest of dreamy designer items. It’s like a designer collaborative, jacked-up, runway show. See if you can pick out a single one of these glamazon madams not wearing a Hermes scarf wrapped in some utterly complex way around her neck — bet you can’t! Every elite design house is at your fingertips on the Avenue Montaigne, if you don’t have time to see them all, make Christian Dior’s house at 30 Avenue Montaigne your first stop. It was his first house opening in 1946 and is a holy fashion landmark. The Avenue is a couture delight in itself. The beauty and shear elegance this tree-lined heaven radiates is overwhelming. It will even leave your bag carrier (spouse) in complete awe, you can leave them on the street while you max out your credit card at Jil Sander, and they’ll still be standing there — dazzled — when you come out an hour later.

Your time shopping in the holy fashion mecca of Paris will set an unprecedented standard for the haute couture purchasing experience (and one that will be hard to let go when you return home). a taste of

CHAMPAGNE by Stuart Brown | wine columnist

F

ound just 120 kilometres outside of Paris — the infamous City of Lights — lays one of the great wonders of the wine world. Many prominent wine regions around the world are compared to other great regions, but one always stands alone: Champagne. Champagne first gained its reputation because of its association with the French Royalty. Monarchs throughout Europe spread the message of the beverage and its tie to exclusivity and power in the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries. The best Champagne houses sought to associate the luxurious drink with festivities, lavish lifestyles and rites of passage. Their efforts accompanied the emergence of a developing middle class that was looking for ways to spend its money on symbols of upward mobility moving towards high society. Especially today, Champagne is the haute couture of fine wines. Unfortunately, many believe that all sparkling wines are Champagne. That is just like saying all cars are Lamborghinis. To be considered Champagne, the wine must be made within the Champagne region and follow all the rules and regulations stated within the Appellation laws.

“TOO MUCH OF ANYTHING IS BAD, BUT TOO MUCH CHAMPAGNE IS JUST RIGHT” - MARK TWAIN

STUART BROWN is a sought-after, certified Sommelier. Formerly at Bear Mountain Resort, Stuart now spends his time educating others about wine around the world, and is an instructor for the International Sommelier Guild on Vancouver Island.

84

INSPIRATION 2015

According to The Sotheby’s Wine Encyclopedia, the Champagne region covers approximately 25,000 square kilometres, has approximately 19,000 growers and produces more than 300 million bottles annually. But the real magic comes from the lime-rich chalk soils abundant in the region. This ancient sea bed of chalk contributes to the unique flavours of Champagne that can be achieved nowhere else in the world.

“THERE COMES A TIME IN EVERY WOMAN’S LIFE WHEN THE ONLY THING THAT HELPS IS A GLASS OF CHAMPAGNE” - BETTE DAVIS Champagne can only be made with three grapes: Pinot Noir (red), Chardonnay (white), and Pinot Meunier (red). If it is only made with Chardonnay, it is referred to as Blanc de Blancs. Made with the other two Pinot grapes, it gains the reference Blanc de Noirs. And due to red grapes being included in the equation, some Champagnes can be Rosé. As to what the original blend, or cuvée, consists of, is completely up to the individual producer. To complete the Champagne production, the Traditional Method, or Méthode Champenoise must be adhered to. The second fermentation, where the bubbles are created and captured, must be done within the bottle. The wine must also be aged on the lees (or dead yeast cells) for several years. This is what gives the wine its fine bubbles and complexity of flavour.

B U T W H E R E I S T H E PA R T Y ? Most only think of popping open a bottle of Champagne during times of celebration. Although Champagne truly is wonderful on its own, it has many diverse food pairing attributes. There are so many unique types and styles of Champagne (from Non-Vintage Brut to Vintage Cuvee Prestige) that you could pair a different Champagne with each food course on most menus. Some Champagnes showing clean, crisp, citrus and minerality character are well accompanied with oysters. While others that are full flavoured and have developed nutty and creamy characteristics may pair well with richer dishes and flavourful sauces.

“WHY DO I DRINK CHAMPAGNE FOR BREAKFAST? DOESN’T EVERYONE?” - NOEL COWARD The time has come for us to move forward with Champagne and open ourselves up to serving these delicious wines with foods that help to explore their riches and delights which are unique to each bottle. The fun can begin with comparing several Champagnes to each other and with different foodpairing combinations. Let the popping begin!

estivals are opportunities to express a heightened version of your personal style, providing a playful space to experiment with looks. Go the extra mile and get into bold prints, eclectic vintage, daytime sequins, and perhaps a costume or two. From head to toe, here are my top accessory picks for the festival season.

HAT PARTY Sunstroke is not cute. Protect your face and stay chic in this ivory-hued wide brimmed hat from Lack of Color. Feeling floral? Retire your crown and weave small blooms into the hat band.

HEAVY METAL Whether it’s hands, wrists, or neckline, choose a body part and get layering. Or, if you’re me, layer everywhere including the ankles. I love the Dylan Lex Bowie necklace (opposite page).

PARTY BEACON This dance floor must-have! Inspired by festival bloggers Betty and Kora, the beacon is essential for those times when friends are lost in a sea of music lovers. Hit up your local dollar store for my favourite festival accessory: the metallic windmill.

BOHEMIAN WARRIOR Flat and trendy, Valentino’s gladiator sandals (opposite) will keep you dancing until the sun comes up.

PSYCHEDELIC SUNNIES Reflective coloured lenses are here to stay, and this is the perfect time to have fun with your frames. Extra festival points if you embellish an old pair yourself.

In the world of cosmetics, it is all about going back to what beauty products once were – from the earth and possibly, the kitchen. We have become modern beauty couturier taking on DIY projects that gives us full control over what we put on our skin. “What you are putting on your body needs to be more intentional” said Melodie Reynolds, owner and creative director for BC based cosmetic company Elate Cosmetics. She added, “Cosmetics, fashion and beauty – these things are fun and frivolous. But at the heart of it all is your identity, who you are and how you perceive yourself ”. Witha beauty industry that is clearly divided, the most crucial part of it is you and your power to choose.

MOVING ON :

Stroke of

LUCK

A

by Allison Fontana

t 22 I was living the dream.....well my dream! I had graduated from hair school already, placing first in a Vancouver student competition and fourth in Canada. My ultimate career goal was to manage high end spas and I was well on the path to success. One fateful day changed my life. With a final blowout for a client, I dashed home to get ready for an evening out; nothing like curling your own hair after perfecting other people’s do’s all day, but I was excited to enjoy the evening.

I never was one of those who thought as myself as invincible. My father had an inoperable brain tumour and was well aware of what life had in store. But on that night, while at the party, I was picked up from behind and thrown into a hot tub and my relation to “child’s play” ended. I felt sick as soon as I stood u,p with everyone in the hot tub laughing at the playful surroundings. I had been drinking and first thought that the nausea was caused by one too many. I was confused, left the hot tub, and was sick to my stomach. My head started to pound like my brain was imploding and my boyfriend Frank took me home, which luckily was just minutes away. I had that sinking feeling that something was wrong since that level of pain had never been experienced. Momentarily the left side of my face went numb and drooped. I could literally feel the weight of my face drop on that side. Simultaneously the entire left side of my body went numb and I lost my vision. 98

INSPIRATION 2015

WHAT IS HAPPENING??? My vision was returning in only what I can describe as a puzzle, slowly coming together but I didn’t want to speak, admit, or even acknowledge this was going on. Over the next eight hours while Frank slept beside me, I tried to focus my eyes, tap my leg, and pinch my hip. I was desperate for this foreign feeling to stop. The next morning I was able to put weight on my leg and move my arm but the whole left side had an intense pins and needles sensation. I couldn’t feel many fingers or back to the touch. My head was pounding and truly believed that I had alcohol poisoning for the first time. What else could this be? I’m ok! If I think it enough and say it enough this feeling will stop, right? I refused to admit to myself, let alone anyone else, that something else was going on. The next day, to my pure devastation, I was no better and went to emergency. I remember sobbing as I came through the sliding doors with fear overwhelming my conscious.

“I was at a party and got thrown into a hot tub and now I can’t really feel my entire left side.” I said to the emergency Doctor whose first question was, “So were you drinking?” See! I knew it must be alcohol poisoning! He left the room to do some blood work and two hours later came back and said, “I think you threw out your back in the hot tub. You’ll be fine in a few days. You can go home.” I responded, “Why can’t I feel my leg?” The Doctor looked horrified, having just dismissed my symptoms like I had, and returned with a Neurologist. Two clapping tests followed and I shook my head thinking this Doctor was crazy and I wasn’t here to play patty cake. The Neurologist said, “I am almost positive you’ve had a stroke. We will have to do tests!” WHO DID? A WHAT? PARDON? Who has strokes? Seniors have strokes? A WHAT?

great!” I had been the big girl in high school, weighing 240lbs at my highest. I was teased, mocked, and literally took my brothers friend to prom (thank goodness he had good looking friends). I had worked so hard to be the success I was and no way that was being taken away. My weight loss journey had begun and I made it to 170lbs that June, which was a huge goal. Life was NOT stopping here! So I spent the next month crying my eyes out in private from the headaches, walking stairs when I was told to sleep, playing memory games with myself, and telling everyone I was doing great. My mom would always make daily plans for short walks which made me get up and get ready. I enjoyed seeing friends, though many of them had a hard time believing I had a stroke. I was challenged on the diagnosis by my peers on multiple occasions saying, “You can’t have a stroke like that!” I chose to educate instead of emotionally enrage though it was difficult defending myself while trying to heal.

The truth is that I AM the face of many survivors. Strokes don’t look like anything. It could be you and it was me. My stroke did not define my life, but instead empowered it. Allison had a stroke and she’s doing great! It’s the truth!

An MRI followed, which showed the dissection in the base of my brain where a small tear had formed from a whip lash type injury that June 22 evening. My body had built a blood clot but overcompensated and the clot was too large for the tear and got stuck. The ONE TIME I overcompensate in my life...LOL! As family members and friends were started to be informed, no one could believe that a healthy 22 year old could have a stroke. We all attributed strokes to the elderly.

I went under the care of an amazing Neurologist in Vancouver who was not at all shocked to see a 22 year old in his office. He explained to my horror that I would probably be off work for a year and no level of recovery was guaranteed. Oh, no he didn’t! I was excited to prove him wrong. My life story was not going to end that day and begin again as “well Allison had a stroke so...” No! My story was going to be, “Allison had a stroke she is doing

Within three months, I was back to work for three two-hour shifts which turned into three four-hour shifts and back to full time before I knew it. I went on to fulfill my dream of becoming a Spa Manager within a year of my stroke.

I am now 34 years old, married to Frank, and have two beautiful children. I have a blind spot in both of my eyes and three numb toes that remind me of what a survivor I am. It is important to bring awareness to Heart and Stroke for the age group of 18-25, which is commonly dismissed. I finally lost my weight and fulfilled a lifelong dream of modelling wedding dresses. ME!! The big girl in high school who had a stroke — a model! When I tell people I can’t see in my upper left vision and have three numb toes from a stroke, they are dumbfounded! “You don’t look like you’ve ever had a stroke!”
