25TH ANNIVERSARY For twenty five years, the Festival of Trees has been a cherished holiday tradition in Victoria. It is magic, community, children and charity - and all in support of BC Children’s Hospital.

Now at two locations, The Bay Centre, and Fairmont Empress, there are 85 beautifully decorated trees on display this year - the most trees in the history of the event! Festival of Trees creates a magical wonderland decorated from the heart. Some are stunning, others are interactive and many trees are just plain fun!

Not only does this event raise money for BC Children’s Hospital, and benefit sick children in our own community, but it also gives local companies the opportunity showcase their community spirit. This truly is a local community festival, and its local impact is significant. Last year, more than 537 Victoria children and their families made 1,404 hospital visits. Province-wide, more than

86,000 patients made nearly a quarter million visits to BC Children’s Hospital in 2015.

Shaun Cerizano, Philanthropy Manager for BC Children’s Hospital Vancouver Island puts into perspective why the Festival of Trees is so important to Victoria and its residents. “With this being our 25th year anniversary for Festival of Trees in Victoria, we’re excited to have our biggest year yet. Last year alone, approximately 7 children per day from Vancouver Island required treatment at BC Children’s Hospital. enjoyed close-to-normal post-baby life, all the while preparing for the first step in the remedial process, known as the “Fontan path.” Reid’s first surgery involved a Blalock-Taussig shunt, or a BT shunt, to compensate for the right ventricle’s compromised ability to route blood to the left ventricle. His second, the Glenn procedure, further redirected blood flow, allowing blood to be routed directly to the lungs, allowing the ventricle that is able to bring blood to the lungs for oxygen. Between surgeries, Reid managed to resume life as normal as possible. His family learned to help him strike a balance between freedom and self-regulation.

“He didn’t have the energy of his sister, and he wouldn’t do a fraction of what she was doing. He’d sit out because he’d be exhausted. After activities, he’d be huffing and puffing,” says Andrea. “[We learned] not to hold him back, but to help him understand his limits.” To any other passenger on the ferry from Nanaimo to Vancouver that June day, the blond toddler running through the aisles might have seemed cute, but otherwise unremarkable. Energetic kids are a common sight on the popular passage, after all. To Brad and Andrea van Rossum, though, the sight was marvelous. During his first three years, their little boy could barely climb stairs or run with his big sister Alexa without running out of breath, needing to rest or asking to be held.

But this summer, after his Fontan surgery, his third and final procedure at BC Children’s Hospital to maximize his heart function as he lives with congenital heart disease, Andrea and Brad witnessed a burgeoning sense of independence, energy and vitality in their son. “He was this wild child running around the ferry,” says Andrea. “We were just so happy, because he’s never done that before. He would walk a bit, then he’d want to be carried, because he’d be tired.”

Reid was born in February 2013, with a congenital heart defect called pulmonary atresia with intact ventricular septum, in which a valve orifice fails to develop and obstructs the connection between the right and left ventricles of the heart. Baby Reid would have to endure a three-stage procedure over the following three years, ending in a Fontan procedure, a complex surgery that would ultimately supply blood to the lungs. The van Rossums learned of Reid’s heart condition during Andrea’s pregnancy, so it wasn’t a shock when he was born. They felt comfortable relying on BC Children’s caregivers, who eased their anxieties. “We trusted the care here so much, we didn’t feel fear,” says Andrea. The van Rossums adapted patiently to his first days. “A normal feed for him would be for any other baby like running a marathon. It was tiring for him, so he had to take short bursts.” Otherwise, the family

The Glenn prepared Reid for the ultimate Fontan surgery, or “Fontan completion,” which allows the blue blood that doesn’t contain oxygen to flow passively into the lungs, without being pushed by the heart. Today, Reid has recovered, and is more energetic than ever. Reid is treated by Dr. Andrew Campbell and his cardiology team, which includes Dr. Brian Sinclair, who sees Reid at clinics in Victoria and Nanaimo. The ability to attend follow-up appointments on the Island, thanks in large part to Child Health BC, came as a huge relief to the family. “What once took a full day with travel time, now takes an hour,” says Brad. Three years after they first set out on the Fontan path, the experience has made the van Rossum family all the wiser.

Andrea has some words of comfort to other families of children with congenital heart defects: deal calmly with the cardiac condition, but don’t lose sight of the fact that your family is about to welcome a beautiful new addition. “I would say, don’t miss the miracle of having a baby. Rely on all the resources you can and find your other heart people. Find your tribe.

he holiday season is a magical time – full of feasting families and fun festivities. But in between all of the shopping and cooking and assorted merry mayhem – how do you plan to decorate? If you’re feeling a little “stumped” for ideas this year, along with the JMD team, we are sharing our tips to help you “spruce” up your space!

If you hadn’t guessed from our puns, our design inspiration for the 2016 holiday season draws from the natural world. Christmas can become quite chaotic and frankly, overwhelming, between high-traffic jams at the mall, glitzy baubles and gift-wrapping – so there is something to be said about coming home to a wholesome and calming environment. For a truly cozy, organic experience we suggest bringing the purity and freshness of outside in.

Lush evergreens boughs strewn with pine cones and loose twigs are dominating the visions dancing through our heads this year. Peppered with dried berries and cinched with burlap bows, this look is both effortlessly simple and chic. HOLIDAY CHEER (IN A HURRY!) When unexpected guests arrive during the holidays, your mind turns to two things. What to give them to eat, and what drinks to serve your guests. Here are two of my favourite go-toâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s that will have your guests knocking on your front door for more.

MULLED WINE INGREDIENTS: • • • • • • • • • • •

1 L red wine 250 ml brandy 150 ml orange liqueur juice from two oranges zest from 1 orange (no pith) 1 stick cinnamon 4 cloves 1 pear or apple, sliced few rasps of nutmeg 2 star anise 3 bay leaves METHOD:

• Warm all up ingredients in a pot over medium heat - don’t boil or even simmer, just warm. • Ladle into mugs or heat proof glasses along with fruit, cinnamon and spices. • Serve warm.

DATE CHUTNEY INGREDIENTS: • 10 dates, soaked in hot water and mashed into a paste • 1 red onion, diced • splash good quality balsamic vinegar • pinch salt • pinch sugar • olive oil METHOD: • Sweat onions on medium heat until soft. • Add in dates and stir well. • Add in balsamic, salt and sugar and cook down for 20-30 minutes, stirring regularly. • Season to taste with salt and sugar.

MINI STILTON & DATE GRILLED CHEESE INGREDIENTS: • • • •

1 baguette, sliced thinly butter stilton or strong blue cheese homemade date chutney

METHOD: • Butter baguette spears and toast face down in hot fry pan. • Top with cheese and date chutney. • Assemble into sandwiches • Toast to perfection on both sides and serve hot.

Here are 3 ideas that are easy and cost effective additions to your home that increase value and functionality, making you, and your house, happy.

SOMETHING FOR HIM

Who doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t want an organized garage that looks good too? Do yourself a favour as we wrap up 2016 and make that glorified storage locker the new hot spot for your tools and toys.

Start by applying an epoxy floor which gives a beautiful finish allowing for easy cleaning and eliminating that industrial, unfinished stained concrete. The next biggest challenge is to get everything off the floor. This can be accomplished with a combination of slat wall, monkey bar adjustable storage with bins, rolling tool chests and some cabinetry. Lighting is an essential element, brightening the space so that it doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t feel like you are in a garage. Finally, garnish with a few vintage elements that showcase some of your past adventures. Not only will you be able to park your car out of the elements but a game of garage hockey is a big draw for holiday family gatherings.

Storage is the number one priority before adding a gentle mix of colours, textures, and creativity. A healthy dose of IKEA gives this room the perfect balance. We outfitted an IKEA Expedit with industrial brushed metal wheels and a La Z Boy ottoman, also on wheels, allow the largest pieces of furniture to be reconfigured when needed. A cozy vintage rocking chair and side table add some history and a white pouf acts as extra seating or work surface for the kids. Princess dresses and ball gowns are housed behind the closed doors of a ceiling height PAX wardrobe. Curtain rods hung on the wall house wrapping paper and ribbon, creating a gift wrapping station. The old exterior wall inside the room maintains a rustic element with an application of grey and white FAT Paint, brightening the space.

SOMETHING FOR KIDS

Anyone with kids might laugh, thinking that every room in the house has been taken over by the younger generation, but give them a spot to call their own and their eyes light up. Design it outside and it will grant you the added bonus of a little peace and quiet as well. Look for a spot in your yard that is not being used and see how you can shape it into a play area that allows the kids to create their own games. A simple swing and trapeze and 14â&#x20AC;&#x2122; slide worked into the contours of the hill our house is built on. These were ordered on-line through Jungle Gyms Canada and delivered right to the door. The existing deck is the platform for this playground and provides a seamless transition from the house to the play space.

Just as our cultures and palates have become more sophisticated, so has followed what we eat and drink. Unlike vodka, which is supposed to be colourless, odourless and tasteless, gin explodes with character, depth and flavour. And each gin has its own story, ingredients, texture and flavour profile.

We have really moved past the 1980’s Gin and Tonic and Tom Collins days into the realm of The Negroni (although a classic, sometimes made exquisite by aging in a barrel). It seems that anywhere you are travelling on this planet, there will be a local and interesting cocktail made with gin. hen I first saw Jonathan Gleed’s work I was struck by how he was able to magnify the mundane details of life and capture the significance of it in such a luminous way. The colours of his work are layered and glow. As Andy Warhol once said “everything has its beauty, but not everyone sees it”. Well, Jonathan Gleed sees it and is present so as not to miss out on a fleeting, oft overlooked moment of beauty. I was also aware of the feeling of nostalgia that washed over me as I was taking in his work, in particular the car scenes – I was transported back to family road trips down the east coast of the U.S. There is a subtle power to his work that you should definitely experience. Originally hailing from Ottawa, Jonathan’s CV is quite impressive and his career has been flourishing over the years. He has previously worked in television production, writing and as a photographer. I was fortunate enough to sit down with Jonathan for coffee and chat. Here is a snippet of our conversation.

When did you know that painting was your calling?

Creativity has always been a central theme in my professional pursuits, but it actually took me a long time to figure out that I had a passion for painting. Part of that was just choosing something – I think this is a struggle for so many people. Ultimately, you have to just risk it and pour yourself into one thing that you might want to spend your life doing. When my kids were very small I managed to carve out a few hours each day to follow a curiosity for painting that had always been there. It was only a few weeks into the process that I knew I had found my path. Painting is creating in the very purest of forms. It’s so very tangible and the results are literally physical. I’m drawn to the physicality of the work and the fact that it forces me to share something with people that I am completely responsible for.

What is it about the subtle and not so subtle hues of everyday, mundane life - la vie quotidienne - that you find so inspiring? I love the challenge of finding awe in a place or time that’s not scripted, staged or framed. We live in a world that is full of inspiration and beauty and we encounter it at every turn, but what’s really special about a place and time can easily be missed when we’re distracted or not really looking because we’re in our cars or rushing past a scene we’ve seen hundreds of times. It’s those overlooked moments that from time-to-time have an impact that literally blows me away. I feel so lucky to have found this as a focus of my work because it forces me to look at things differently and to stop and take time to really see what’s happening right in front of me.

You state that your primary objective as a painter is to evoke emotional vigour or an emotional reaction in the viewer. What kind of emotions do you think or want viewers to tap into? That’s an interesting question because I can only convey what I feel and I honestly can’t say that’s a conscious thing, I’m usually tapping into something that I can’t quite put my finger on. What other people feel is their own business – I just hope to stir something up in them. I’ve always thought that the visual arts are a beautiful way to communicate because it’s an open-ended and subjective way to connect with other people.

A lot of people tell me they feel a sense of nostalgia when they see my work. Sometimes the reason isn’t clear – it’s just there – but for others it’s things like remembering car rides from the back seat as a kid with the only entertainment being the pattern of the rain on the window. Some days I can’t believe that other people respond to that in the way that they do.

How has island living influenced your work?

I think I read somewhere that Victoria has the second highest number of artists per capita in the country. I have no idea if that’s true, but you can’t help but to draw inspiration from all of the incredibly-talented people in this place. People are passionate about the arts here and I think that’s really something special.

From the perspective of what actually ends up being painted – Vancouver Island has featured heavily in my work over the years but sometimes it takes a back seat when I’ve had the opportunity to visit places that I just have to paint. Water is a reoccurring theme in my work and I think that’s one of the biggest influences that living on this beautiful island has had. I love this place at all times of the year but there is something about the return of the rain in fall that captivates me.

What part of your career are you the most proud of?

I’ve had some really exciting opportunities as an artist, like having Jeremy Mann jury one of my paintings into a show he was headlining. I’ve also created really positive relationships with galleries, collectors and other artists from all over the world. I’m proud of these accomplishments but for me, being focused and disciplined is actually what I’m most proud of. It’s been about 5 years since I started down this path and I’ve had to recommit to it several times as I’ve learned a thing or two. One is that successes don’t mean you can slow down, they actually require you to work even harder and smarter than before. Another is that even though I live in a world of constant feedback, I have to stick to the strict set

of rules I’ve set for myself - I paint what excites me, I move towards positivity, I share my expertise freely and I live and breathe my work.

What is your artistic process?

It usually starts with exploring. Whether that’s in a place that I’ve been hundreds of times before or somewhere that I’ve never been. I take a camera everywhere I go searching for anything that’s striking – the reflection of taillights, the movement of people or water droplets – these things eventually add up to a moment that I think is worth capturing. When I’m back in my studio it’s a process of elimination to arrive at an image that conveys what I felt in that moment, in that place. I

sketch my work in one of my chosen base paint colours to start the process of putting down the paint in however many layers it takes to bring forward the mood I’m after. Sometimes it’s a dozen layers and it never ends up looking exactly how I planned because along the way, I remember little things, decide that certain elements should be built up or be downplayed. I know I’ve been successful with a piece when I can see that it’s done without any hesitation. That’s a fantastic feeling.

t’s the holiday season!

A time for glitz and sparkles, sequins and fancy makeup. I’ve been known to enjoy it, but my entire beauty regime and the makeup I wear has completely changed.

Without being melodramatic (and I am!), it is some of the worst news you can hear when your career is in front of the camera. “You can’t wear makeup anymore.” Sounds frivolous, but I promise most viewers pay more attention to what you are wearing and how you look versus what you say. But I digress. It was May 2015, I was on CHEK News at 5 and my doctor says to me “You can’t wear makeup anymore, at least not the kind you are wearing. You have developed an allergy to it.” At the time, my eyes and face were completely swollen and blistered. It was painful. Multiple hospital and dermatologist visits over a six-month period revealed I was allergic to formaldehyde, nickel and bleach. Apparently, they were all in my makeup. Who knew? I didn’t! Recovering on antibiotics and steroids I start to read and study the labels. As hard as it was for me to believe, yes those were some of ingredients in my cosmetics. At the time I thought, what now? Starting my research, I soon realized I wasn’t alone!

“It’s always been common that makeup causes allergies. I think it just wasn’t apparent the depth of just how far it went,” that from Makeup Artist, Carly Flint. After years in the beauty industry, Flint starting experimenting with cosmetics and skin

care lines that are free of chemicals and toxins. While I had heard the terms green, clean and natural beauty, it was a new world for me. The skin is the largest organ on the body, it absorbs everything. For 20 years, I had been willingly putting these chemicals and toxins on my face and body. Fortunately, making the switch to the clean beauty movement was easier than I expected.

“It’s been huge over the last couple of years” says Melodie Reynolds, Founder and CEO of Victoria-based Elate Cosmetics. “I think probably the last 10 (years) has been when people have really started to become aware of it and now it’s really moving into the mainstream.” Partly because of geography, Victoria is a hub for the clean beauty movement and it’s still growing. So why here? BC and really the entire west coast of North America is definitely more progressive when it comes to green initiatives.

“I believe Victoria has responded so positively to the clean beauty movement as it is within our city’s culture to do things in a better way. Healthy living is important to us and so is our environment,” says Megan Johns who opened The Green Kiss beauty bar in 2011. Johns also owns Paperdoll, a clean makeup line. “My personal mandate, to put it a bit bluntly, is to stop women from unknowingly putting crap on their skin.”

There are no regulations in the beauty industry, so sometimes companies can make claims about their products. Reynolds warns of greenwashing. She suggests reading the labels and looking for products that have less than 15 ingredients with product ingredients that you can easily identify, especially near the top of the list. Things in the green beauty industry have changed, grown and evolved, even in the last year and a half that I have been learning about it. At first I couldn’t find a lip gloss or mascara that could top my traditional picks. Now I have new faves! Carly Flint is witnessing the evolution. “Technology is evolving and the products are getting better and better and it’s also that we are getting more aware. There are more people creating more noise around it.” Flint joined Megan Johns as a self-proclaimed Beauty Realist at The Green Kiss. She is seeing a change in customers too. “Now I get the beauty lover, and I wasn’t seeing the beauty lover come in the door this time last year.” Beauty lovers, such as me! It’s exciting to see sleepy Victoria on the cutting edge. So this season, I can feel glam while at the same time be green and clean.

We challenged seventeen of Victoria’s most creative interior designers, artists, furniture refinishers and D.I.Y addicts to find a diamond in the rough on UsedVictoria.com and refinish it . They could not spend more than $100 and each team was encouraged to be ultra creative with their reimagined masterpieces! Each team had six weeks to find and refinish their chosen piece of furniture. In October, 2016, all the finished furniture was placed on display at Centre Court in The Bay Centre for two weeks, and the silent auction bidding began!

AN OUTDATED 1980’S BOOKCASE GETS NEW LIFE WITH ANNIE SLOAN CHALK PAINT BY: TRACEY DRAKE

ver the course of the past year, you have watched me tackle all kinds of D.I.Y projects for our Oak Bay character home. In this final instalment, I decided to delve into the world of chalk paint and I turned to the experts at Annie Sloan for help.

On my daily browse through UsedVictoria.com, I came across this massive bookcase. I had been looking for just the right piece for a bare wall in my breakfast room, and the size of this piece of furniture was perfect. The decorator in me loved the open arched shelving and the pack-rat in me loved the generous cupboard storage below. Even though I despised the orange knotty pine and jet black paint colour, I bought it for $55. After I convinced my husband to drag it home, we got busy planning the upstyling of what was to be a lovely piece of furniture. Although I had never worked with Annie Sloan Chalk Paint® on a large project, I knew that was the paint I needed. Why? Three VERY good reasons! (1) I wanted to finish the project in a single weekend, (2) I didn’t want to strip (or sand) the existing black paint and (3) I was looking for a soft, antiqued finish that worked perfectly in our sunny breakfast room.

The decor in the adjoining den is grey and teal with accents of yellow and winter white. The walls in the breakfast room are bright and cheerful, painted in Benjamin Moore Hawthorne Yellow. Wanting to harmonize with the existing palette, I chose Annie Sloan Paris Grey and Old White. The colours are true to their names and I love them both! Before we began painting, we washed all surfaces with hot soapy water and a lint-free cloth, then rinsed with a clean, wet rag and let dry completely.

Applying Annie Sloan Chalk Paint is one of the easiest things I have ever done!

We actually painted white chalk paint right over the dark black existing paint, without stripping or pre-sanding. Amazing and such a time saver!

It was recommended that we use the Annie Sloan paint brushes, and I am glad we did. In total, we applied two coats of Paris Grey and Old White paint and we had LOTS of paint left over in each of the one quart cans. Between coats, we lightly and evenly sanded all surfaces, because I wanted the finish to be elegant rather than shabby chic. Finally, all wood surfaces were sealed with Clear Chalk PaintÂŽ Wax and just a word of caution - a little bit of wax goes a really long way!

We purchased new antique-style crystal cabinet knobs that work perfectly. The project took us about 5 hours, not including waiting time.

Additionally, our tradition of attending The Nutcracker ballet has led to an obsession with nutcrackers and Nutcracker storybooks. Our love for tradition is most apparent in our Christmas rituals, but at the root of this holiday is the essence of the Christmas story itself, complete with the manger, the Christ Child, and the story of love and peace to all. Over the centuries, Christmas has come to include many cultural twists on this iconic holiday, as well as the magic of Santa Claus, that endearing elf in the red suit.

When our children were young, we celebrated with family and friends by organizing a tree-trimming party in preparation for Christmas. BY: CLAIRE FLEWELLING-WYATT ictoria’s rental market is experiencing one of the lowest vacancy rates we have seen in years. This has created a new market for not only development in new purpose build construction, but also the private landlord with suite in the basement or an investment property.

It is important that if you are planning to rent your home, or a portion of your property, that you have an understanding of the types of tenancy agreements available under the BC Residential Tenancy Act. Under the current Act there are three possible tenancy agreements: • • •

Month to month Fixed Term Agreement reverting to a month to month Fixed Term Agreement with a Vacant Possession

Month to Month is just as it sounds a month to month agreement where the tenant pays the rent on the first of each month to the landlord. Should the tenant wish to vacant the property, the tenant must provide the owner 30 days, or a clear month calendar notice. The tricky part of a month t month tenancy is that there are very few ways that an owner can take the property back. Should an owner wish to take the property back he can do so only under the following circumstances: • • •

The owner wishes to move back into the property The owners parents or children wish to occupy the property (please note that siblings do not apply in the scenario) The owner wishes to complete a renovation which will render the property inhabitable

In each of these scenarios, the owner must provide the tenants with 2 months notice and one of those months must be free. The tenant once receiving the notice may give 10 days notice in the first month to move out. Should this transpire, the owner will owe not only the free month but also rebate for any of the days the tenant did not live at the property in that month. Should also be noted that a landlord who chooses to move into the property must remain in the property for a minimum of 6 months.

A fixed term tenancy reverting to a month to month is the agreement that is used most often. This essentially if similar to a month t month, however, both tenant and landlord commit to a specific amount of time prior to the tenancy becoming a month to month. This is popular for

two reasons, it provides comfort to the landlord that they will have guaranteed rent, and it provides stability to the tenant that they will not have to vacate for any of the reason stated above in that fixed amount of time.

Once the fixed term concludes, the tenancy then follows the rules of the month to month tenancy.

The fixed term agreement ending in a vacant possession is a type of tenancy that has come under a lot of scrutiny lately. Essentially the landlord and the tenant agree that the tenancy will last for a certain length of time, and at the conclusion of that time, the tenant must vacate. Unfortunately some landlords have been using the vacant possession to significantly increase the rent, as the regular rent restrictions do not apply. By entering into a brand new tenancy, whether with the existing tenant, or a new tenant, the landlord has the ability to set the rent at any rate. The media has been giving this particular tenancy a bad wrap, which is very unfortunate, as this tenancy can be an extremely useful tool for not only the landlord, but also so the tenant.

At Pemberton Holmes, we use this tenancy as a tool to purge bad tenants, not to gouge good ones. This tenancy allows the landlord and tenant to have a probationary period to determine if the tenancy is of value for both parties, For example, does the tenant pay on time, does the tenant take good care of the property. On the flip, does the landlord respond quickly to repair requests, does the landlord adhere to the guidelines of the Act.

The fixed term tenancy with a vacant possession can also be a very useful tool for hard to house tenants, or those tenants who may or may not have good references or credit. Quite often we will agree to a short lease to give someone we might normally pass over, the opportunity to prove themselves. When used correctly, this tenancy is extremely valuable.

No matter what tenancy approach you decide to take, it is extremely important to have a written contract which clearly states the terms of the agreement.

Ensure that a move in inspection is completed at the start and conclusion of the tenancy and is properly recorded, should you ever find yourself in dispute resolution, these two documents will be very important and could be the deciding factor between your success.
