GWEN STEFANI. A woman who breaks the rules with elegance. A musician who marches to the beat of her own drum. A businesswoman who celebrates the uniqueness of her own brand. A fashion designer who has no fear. A style maker.

When it comes to style, Gwen Stefani really has done it all. From blue hair, bindis, crop-tops and baggy pants, at age 47 Gwen Stefani is still marching to the beat of her own drum. With undoubtedly cool style that has been inspiring others since her launch into stardom at age 17, Stefani has paved her own pathway over the past two decades wearing bold clothing choices and simultaneously mixing up her image as she ages. Her ever-changing style keeps a common thread of being eclectic, colorful, edgy, whimsical and glamorous. Iconic style trends Stefani is noted for bringing to mainstream are punk rock plaids, fishnets, mesh and Harajuku girl aesthetic – all contributing to her well-deserved status as a style guru. Singing and songwriting alongside her band No Doubt in the early 90’s, Stefani gained a distinctive personal style and quickly became a powerful figure, wowing fans 12 . RESORT 2017

with her uncommon wardrobe that reflected her songs and voice. With an obvious passion for design, Stefani worked alongside stylists to create garments that she wore on stage during early performances. In 2003, Stefani ventured into the fashion industry by becoming one of the first pop stars to bridge the world of fashion and music with her two of her own clothing lines: ‘L.A.M.B’ and ‘Harajuku Lovers’. By translating her imaginative style into her collections, Stefani’s designs were now accessible for followers and fans, resulting in much success to this day.

Transformation is what Stefani is known for. With each song and album comes an emotional journey that is seen through fashion choices and imagery to coincide. Launching her solo music career in 2004, Stefani released catchy topcharting album ‘Love. Angel. Music. Baby,’. Stefani’s inspiration stemmed from the culture of Harajuku, a neighborhood in Tokyo known for its fashionable residents. Switching out her signature abs and ska roots, Stefani embodied her album through WWW.NICHE.STYLE . 13

her fashion choices of Japanese influences, vibrant colors, quirky accessories and unique silhouettes. A reflection of monumental moments in Stefani’s life, she reinvented herself in 2006 during the time of her The Sweet Escape release. Stefani modified her image with inspiration from Michelle Pfeiffer’s character in the 1983 Scarface, which was evident through bold 70’s bangs, with ultra glamour and sleek silhouettes. 14 . RESORT 2017

Stefani has always worn outfits that only she could pull off for red carpet appearances. Tuxedo and a cane, bloomer pants over fishnets and shorts at age 47; Stefani is always evolving and staying true to her original and ever-youthful sense of self. Stefani continues to grace covers of international magazines, stays in the buzz for street style choices and is a frequent favorite on the red carpet. From the Marchesa ombré dress worn to the Glamour Woman of

the Year Awards (at which she was honored) to wardrobe when out with her three sons, Stefani shifts into a new character each day. Combining modern tomboy, sporty chic, rocker and old school glamour with a motherly touch of sophistication, Gwen Stefani proves that trends may change, but she will never go out of style.

No doubt about it.

RING [ in]

THE NEW YEAR by Tracey Drake 2017 will go down as the year of the statement ring. Finger accessories that are beautiful, unique and with a point of view. Silver metals will continue to be popular through 2017, with rose gold fading, and although stackables remain on trend, there is a slight shift to chunkier styles. From high-end bling to fashion rings, NICHE rounded up a few of our favorite brands, and their current collections of ring candy. A little something for every taste here.

Each year, Pantone selects a color to represent the new year. For 2017, that color is “Greenery. It is a fresh take on an otherwise overdone and often ho-hum shade. Although not an easy shade to pull off, especially if you have a lot of yellow undertones in your skin, it is a very refreshing color that will brighten up a wardrobe. In moderation, it can be the perfect punch of color. Think accessories, bags, shoes and even makeup, in moderation.

Being in the beauty world for more than a decade, I have come to know which staples I cannot live without when it comes to my daily beauty regime. DIOR 1-Minute Mask

CAUDALIE Beauty Elixir

CLARINS Skin Boosters

Being a business owner, entrepreneur, wife, new mom and the wearer of many hats, I love products that pack a big punch in a very short amount of time. This Dior Capture Totale Dreamskin 1-minute mask does the trick in a minute to keep my skin looking dewy, blemish free and refreshed.

This toning mist is inspired by Queen Isabelle of Hungary’s famous elixir of youth! It is an amazing priming spray before makeup to lock it all in, and is suitable for all skin tones. Fresh and invigorating, pack a small bottle in your purse and spritz throughout the day for an instant pick me up!

These Clarins Skin Boosters are a new addition to my daily beauty regime that I love. There are three options: detox, energy and repair. Depending on which of the three that you need, you add a few drops (about 5) to your moisturizer for an extra boost. Feel free to mix them together for greater impact!

DAVINES Solu Clarifying Shampoo

LUSH Bath Bombs

KLORANE Dry Shampoo

Ever since I’ve gone au naturel with my hair, I’ve noticed that clarifying shampoo works best for me to keep my hair bouncy, full, and soft. Davines is a brand I swear by! I also love using their Oi spray leave in treatment once I step out of the shower. It has a luxurious fragrance and works wonders for the hair.

I am a new user of this Lush product and I’m hooked! These bath bombs are jam-packed with relaxing elements, are encapsulating with amazing scents and come in beautiful colors and shapes. Try Tisty Tosty a heart shaped bomb with rosebuds that will romantically float in your tub.

Amazing for those days when you don’t have time to wash your hair and need the extra lift! I only like to wash my fine hair twice a week to keep it from drying out. For days in between washes, I use Klorane Dry Shampoo. It’s by far the best one that I have tried and I really love that it doesn’t have a harsh smell.

Travel with NICHE to PARIS

42 . RESORT 2017

by Sylvia Tennant There is something that ignites the creative part of my soul when I reminisce about my weekend in Paris. I remember the effortless sophistication of French street style, and how beautiful the Eiffel tower looked when it twinkled in the rain. In a world where hours seem to disappear instantly, I challenged myself to explore this city while being as present as possible, with the goal of making my first weekend in Paris feel twice as long. The popularity of this city and the expected swarms of tourists did not stop me from enjoying the famed hot spots that are listed in every guidebook. I wandered cobblestone streets dwarfed by buildings rich with history and opulent dĂŠcor. My advice? Seek out the local culture by exploring with the loosest of plans, for there are gems veiled within every neighborhood. Paris truly is champagne for the eyes.

SLEEP

Hotel Plaza Athénée is the quintessential haven for fashionistas who appreciate its haute couture address. Nestled within a row of luxury fashion houses, the location is ideal for serial shoppers and those who prefer to explore Paris on foot (the Eiffel Tower and Seine River are a five-minute walk from the front steps). Many glamorous tales are woven into the historic tapestry of this palace, but none are as epic as the relationship Christian Dior had with the hotel. With his landmark couture headquarters located just next door, he used the Plaza Athénée as his playground beginning in the late 1940’s, often sketching in the courtyard and photographing models with his newest designs. 44 . RESORT 2017

Hotel Tips: The Eiffel Suites at the Plaza Athénée are jaw-dropping. Complete with marble bathrooms, king-sized beds, and luxurious living rooms, they prominently feature a first-class view of the tower through oversized, framed windows. In the evening, this view is simply magical, and best enjoyed with a glass of champagne in hand. Start the day with an early morning pampering session at Europe’s only Dior Institut, but do not miss the unsurpassed brunch service at Restaurant Alain Ducasse.

EAT

A mid-afternoon pain au chocolat at Le Blé Sucrée (7 rue Antoine Vollon) is both easy on the eyes and the wallet. This is the place to over-order from the gorgeous rows of pastries and breads that line the cases. No visit to Paris is complete without a fine dining experience. 114 Faubourg Brasserie is a Michelinstarred restaurant located within Le Bristol Paris. Murals of colorful dahlias line the walls, adding joyful energy to the warm, formal dining room. Chef Jean-Charles Cauquil approaches traditional French dishes with a parisienne-style twist and creates multi-course offerings with confident innovation. Their sommelier is conversant and quick to honor the local artisans who provide their finest vintages to the Brasserie. You must try the artichoke soup with pan-seared foie gras and black truffle. 114 Faubourg Brasserie Le Bristol Paris 112 Rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré lebristolparis.com

Polished chic sophistication. I visited between seasons when subtle fur details, impeccably tailored jackets, and patent brogues were popping up everywhere. Bring your best and be open to the fact that after a shopping visit La Fayette, you’ll probably come home with an extra suitcase full of inspiration. SHOP FOR VINTAGE: Didier Ludot is a boutique with a gorgeous selection of vintage and haute couture. Stop in, even if just for a look. Should you prefer the thrill of the hunt, many vintage markets take place across the city. If you’re visiting on a weekend, do your homework – it’s likely that there will be an event happening nearby.

WANDER

Walking shoes are essential for a weekend in Paris. Much can be seen while strolling along the Seine River, and some of history’s most celebrated painters (Matisse, Monet, and Seurat, for example) found inspiration in its beauty. I highly recommend both the Panthéon and Notre-Dame as excellent time-conscious tourist spots, but my favorite afternoon was spent wandering the Egyptian Antiquities section of the Louvre. Choosing a focus was integral to budgeting time in the museum. Don’t worry, there are plenty of works to appreciate en route to your chosen exhibit. Paris is a wanderer’s city, and I encourage you to find your own bliss within the bustle. Mine was most often a charcuterie board and glass of red wine.

Eric Himel’s STYLISH LIFE FORM VERSUS FUNCTION

ERIC HIMEL is a widely known celebrity stylist, fashion and media personality. Himel attended Parson’s School of Design and trained under Project Runway’s Tim Gunn, then moved to Los Angeles and began his styling career, expanding his business across North America. Himel’s roster of celebrity clientele has included Jenny McCarthy, Giuliana Rancic, Pete Wentz, and Gabby Douglas. He’s best known for his signature Closet Purge™ and now leverages the online landscape, offering Virtual Styling Sessions - erichimel.com

Warmth versus style. Are they mutually exclusive? Not if you know what you’re doing. Just like bonsai and origami, layering is an art and a skill. Consideration of fit, fabrication, color and style all get exponentially multiplied when layering an outfit. Indoor and outdoor fluctuating temperatures, weather extremes, and dress code mandates can change throughout the day, making layering not just a choice but a winter necessity.

WORK

Layering the same color can make an outfit look bulky and give an overall flat appearance. Play with patterns and textures to give the look added depth and interest. Exposing some skin when and where you can (i.e. - rolling up the sleeves on a blazer or exposing a hint of leg with a wool culotte) will keep you looking chic yet staying warm at the same time.

WINTER LAYERS ARE NOT BUSINESS AS USUAL 64 . RESORT 2017

PARTY A blazer or cardigan is the most natural way to layer for a party look but you should never look boring or under dressed. Make sure a blazer is dressy enough to compliment the fabrication of a dress. Choose a long or chunky cardigan that juxtaposes what’s underneath giving it a style yinyang effect. Or throw a patterned serape over a plain blazer to up the look and for added comfort. The key is to look like you threw the topper on for style when in reality it was for warmth. PLAY Layering for play or weekends is easy: Start with your chicest warm coat like a shearling and then work your way inwards. A blazer or cardigan over a blouse or t-shirt topped off with the softest of oversized scarves will allow you to takeoff any piece as needed throughout your day! Pair with an oversized tote that will hold your hat, scarf, gloves and any layer you are not wearing inside.

ERIC’S STYLE TIPS

. A belt is your friend to define your waist over multiple, bulky materials. . Try a vest over a sweater or blouse - it adds weight without the added layer on your arms. . Utilize an oversized scarf that can double as a shawl which can also be belted. . Throw an embellished blazer over a long dress to get a dressy look with added warmth. . Multiple layers can be stifling indoors so expose your décolletage with deep V necklines to allow for breathability.

the editor when was the last time you saw something for the first time?

by Tracey Drake

You know - it’s funny. Although I travel a lot and appreciate good wine, I’d never been drawn to Napa Valley. And although I love luxury cars, I’ve never considered myself a Lincoln kind of girl. My grandfather drove a Lincoln. It was this big, black imposing car that seemed to take up two city blocks. So no one was as surprised as me to learn that the 2017 Lincoln Continental is sleek, luxurious and truly sexy. It has enough curves to satisfy my need for a little femininity in my car. Definitely not my grandpa’s Lincoln. And so it happened, that over the course of a 3-day road trip to Calistoga Ranch and through Napa Valley, I learned a little more about myself and a lot about the future of fine wines and luxury vehicles. 68 . THE FINER POINTS

• Getting Here: From San Francisco International Airport, by way of the Bay Bridge, it took us one hour and fifty minutes to reach Calistoga Ranch. It was an easy, scenic drive that set the tone for our 3-day road trip weekend. • Spa: Nestled in the wooden canyon, The Auberge Spa at Calistoga Ranch is a rejuvenating natural Napa spa sanctuary. Try the Calistoga Cure - a therapeutic body scrub followed by a private outdoor mud bath and concluding with a classic massage. • Dining: World class menus that are inspired by local food and wine. If you get the chance, have dinner in Calistoga Ranch’s famous Wine Cave - a truly unique dining experience.

Calistoga Ranch is a quiet oasis, tucked into the natural beauty of Napa Valley, California. This place - it personifies the word retreat. Calistoga Ranch is an Auberge Resorts Collection hotel. They proudly boast that this is a place where nature is the primary amenity. They got it right. The 157 acre property features an enchanting lane way (photo left), majestic rolling hills, ancient forests and a private lake. There are fifty rooms in total, but you rarely see other guests as each of the private lodges is set amidst lush forests. We stayed in a one-bedroom lodge (shown right) and it was so private and restful. With bedroom and living room in separate buildings, it felt Balinese in design. Our outdoor deck, which featured a fireplace, comfy lounge chairs and a sunken hot tub, nicely bridged the two buildings. Each lodge is enveloped in nature, and the lulling sounds of a rocky stream passed by our bedroom window. With an outdoor swimming pool, award winning spa, and several dining options, you could stay put and go nowhere at all. I was thrilled that I was able to visit the chicken coop and gather my own farm fresh eggs for my morning breakfast. Calistoga Ranch is the kind of place where you can truly retreat to reconnect with yourself, your partner and with nature. There are more than 80 vineyards in the Calistoga region, so you are well situated for day trips to as many different wineries as you care to sample. WWW.NICHE.STYLE . 71

72 . RESORT 2017

Napa Valley was made for road tripping and enjoying the scenery from the luxury of the 2017 Lincoln Continental made it that much more memorable. Napa was picturesque, peaceful and pastoral, with an interesting history and with more than 400 wineries, there is enough great wine to keep you on the road for a year! We spent most of our time at the famous Chateau Montelena, family owned Frank Family Vineyards, and at the new kid on the wine block, Davis Estate Winery.

Lucky for us, our Lincoln driver was from Napa and shared with us interesting tidbits and amusing tales of changes in this region over the last 25 years. Did you know that in 2000, a 6-liter bottle of 1992 Screaming Eagle Cabernet Sauvignon sold for a whopping $500,000 at auction? It remains the most expensive bottle of Napa Valley wine ever sold. The popular town of Yountville, which we stopped at for lunch and snacks, was named after George Yount, who planted the first grapes in Napa in 1839.

O U R FAVO R I T E S : (opposite top) Chateau Montelena winery is a sight to behold with a stunning chateau and romantic grounds. This winery is famous for winning the 1976 Judgment of Paris. The tasting room was lively and owner Leslie Frank was very hospitable, sharing the passion of the Frank family. FIX story by Jennifer Costanzo The fashion world is having an affair with the color pink; the Winter 2016 runway was evidence of that. Seen at Balmain, Prada, Jil Sander and Gucci, to name a few, all shades of pink have been featured this winter season. This wave of femininity, which has broken over the fashion scene, is new and exciting because pink is usually reserved for the warmer seasons, not the cool and dark winter period. However, it is time to rethink pink. Some of us may shy away from the color pink because it reminds us of Barbie, or perhaps suited for a younger girl - whatever connotations you may have with the color, forget it! According to color experts Pantone, three of the color trends for winter are shades of pink: Electric Fuchsia is an exciting shade of pink. It instantly brightens any outfit and appears either in a monochromatic look or as a statement accessory. Once again this shade of pink was seen at Chanel, on Karl Lagerfeld’s tweed skirts. Bodacious, a pink/purple shade that is intimate and sensual, was seen on the runways at Topshop Unique, Oscar de La Renta, Gucci and Chanel. The unique color is often seen this season, used on animal prints, giving the classic print a unique change.

GUCCI Coral, another pink trend for winter. Usually associated as a Spring/Summer hue, it has been given new life by being worn in the colder seasons. To really give this color a punch, pair it with tangerine. However, if this pairing is too much, pair it with navy to still have an eye-catching outfit. This shade of pink is welcome in a sea of dark colors usually worn during winter. Seen at Giambattista Valli, this shade of pink really speaks for itself. Although pink seems to be the choice color for the runways, the key piece for this winter season is the pink coat. If you are looking to invest in this trend, look for a statement jacket in pink. Here, a great shade to choose is a pastel pink; it brings a refreshing look to a statement coat this winter. With this trend, designers are successfully merging seasons, making pieces easily transitional from the cold of winter into the brisk spring with pink coats. There is a refreshing summery spin to this cheeky and cheery shade, like bubblegum pink or a soft blush. Pastel shades of pink paired with moodier, darker raspberry shades or a monochromatic gray or black look keeps these girly pieces looking sharp and modern.

CHANEL IN HAVANA, CUBA

With travel sanctions lifted, Karl Lagerfeld jumped at the opportunity to debut Chanel’s Cruise 2017 Collection on the streets of Havana, Cuba. More than 700 guests were invited to the authentically Cuban, open air fashion show. The mood was spicy; there was hope and optimism in the air. The collection did not disappoint either, part of which was Cuban inspired with vintage cars, vibrant colors and tops that exclaimed “Viva Coco Libre.”
