MADDY TURNER FROM ROOKIE TO LEADER

Welcome

Suncorp, supporting netballers of all ages.

MADDY TURNER

From rookie to leader: how Maddy Turner has grown with confidence in 2017.

Today’s opposition is another tough one in the talented Sunshine Coast Lightning. They’ve had a good run in the opening half of this season and sit in second place, so we will need to produce some of our best to get the win today.

We’ve reached the halfway mark of the 2017 Suncorp Super Netball, and Round 8 is sure to be exciting for everyone here at Sydney Olympic Park Sports Centre. Firstly, I’m very pleased to welcome you to the Club’s Charity Round in support of our Official Charity Partner, The Kids’ Cancer Project (TKCP). The work that TKCP do in the community is incredible, so I encourage everyone to help support their cause.

Stand up, cheer loud, and help us over the line Swifts Family! Rob Wright Head Coach

Last year, the NSW netball community helped raise over $50,000 through the Charity’s Crazy Hair & Sock Day. What a terrific effort! This year’s Crazy Hair & Sock Day will be officially held on Saturday 20 May...but we’re getting the party started early and I can’t wait to see our Swifts Family in their craziest outfits in the stands.

Maddy Turner

From rookie to leader Now in the second year of her elite netball career, the 21-year-old has gone from strength-to-strength which has seen Maddy establish herself as one of the senior members of Rob Wright’s outfit. It may be a new look team and competition but for Turner the processes remains the same in 2017. “It’s been really good out there on court and while this team is young, we all get along really well together and I think that shows on court too,” she says.

athletes from all codes, but for Turner this hasn’t been an issue. If anything she’s excelled even more. “I think Rob has invested in all of us and we are investing in each other,” Turner says when asked about the close-knit nature of the playing group. “I hope this team can stay together for a long time to come because I think we are going to keep building and keep pushing for success, which is our longterm view.” As everyone found out last year, it’s very hard to phase Maddy Turner. Now one of the more senior players in the squad, she takes her new found status just like everything else – in her stride. “To be honest I don’t really think about things like that,” she says, smiling.

“I think Rob has invested in all of us, and we are investing in each other...I hope this team can stay together for a long time to come because we are going to keep building.” “We’ve been disappointed the results haven’t been coming, but we feel like we’re getting better each time we play and that’s really encouraging. As young players it’s important the group gets to know each other well, both on and off the court.” The dreaded second-year syndrome is something that often effects young

“Last year I didn’t really think about being the rookie, and this year I don’t think too much about having a year’s experience under my belt. “Everyone out on court has been playing netball for a long time, maybe not at the top level, but they all know their roles and positions really well and everyone can draw

on different things to help their performances.” After a tremendous debut season in 2016 Turner credits the Swifts for making her not just a better player, but also a better person; so much so she can barely recognise the rookie she was at the beginning of last year. “I think if I was to watch my games from last year to this year they would be completely different. I wouldn’t recognise the person on court,” she says. “Rob has pushed me in a really good direction with my game and now I have some much more confidence in my positioning, skill and decision making. This year I am definitely looking for possession more and not waiting for the ball to come to me. “Last year my contacts were very low, but this year they are much higher. While that’s not a great stat to have, I think it shows how much more I’m contesting for the ball and have the confidence to do so this year.” It is said that confidence breeds success. If the other young players in the Swifts develop their game just like Turner, then the future looks very rosy indeed.

5 | NSW SWIFTS INSIDER

Just last year young gun Maddy Turner took to the trans-Tasman Netball League like a duck to water, producing a stunning debut season which resulted in being invited to Australian Diamonds camp as a training partner.

NEWS GEAR UP FOR CRAZY HAIR & SOCK DAY!

NSW SWIFTS GALA DINNER

Pencil in Saturday 20 May to host a Crazy Hair & Sock Day at your Club or Association, or choose a date that suits you, and help support The Kid’s Cancer Project.

While Suncorp Super Netball has only reached its halfway mark, the Club would like to invite our Members and Fans to pencil in Wednesday 21 June for the NSW Swifts Gala Dinner!

Last year more than $50,000 was raised by the NSW netball community which went a long way in helping our official Charity Partner continue to do incredible work.

The annual event, which takes place at Doltone House in Sydney’s Hyde Park, is a wonderful way to farewell the Swifts’ season, by applauding individual excellence and team heroics and having a good time.

Look out for Oscar the Bear and his besty Sporty Swift who will roaming around the venue today looking to get a photo with some of the best and craziest dressed here today!

So join us for a night of glitz and glamour – where the players will swap their netball uniform and shoes for dresses and heels – to celebrate the Swifts’ inaugural Suncorp Super Netball season. Save the date and keep an eye out on nswswifts.com.au for any Gala Dinner updates, including ticket prices.

There will also be bucket collectors roaming around for any generous donations our Swifts Family may like to contribute to the cause.

CELEBRATING HARMONY DAY

NSW SWIFTS HIGH TEA

On Friday 24 March, Netball Australia and Netball NSW brought together netball greats including the NSW Swifts, multicultural community leaders and politicians to compete in an ‘All Stars’ Harmony Day netball match.

Join the NSW Swifts for a delightful afternoon of delicious treats and conversation at the Club’s annual High Tea at the Genea Netball Centre on Tuesday 9 May.

The match was developed to bring leading political and sporting figures together to support the essence of Harmony Day, and celebrate the cultural diversity that makes Australia the great nation that it is. The match also coincided with the launch of the 2017 Australia Post One Netball program, a partnership between Australia Post and Netball Australia which aims to address the barriers to community engagement with sport.

Share some fabulous food, stories and a few laughs too as you mingle with your favourite netballers away from the pressures of the court and media spotlight. Save the date and keep an eye out on nswswifts.com. au for any High Tea updates, including ticket prices or call (02) 9951 5000.

Colour the court from your head to your toes! Encourage your netball Club or Association to host a Crazy Hair & Sock Day this season!

clairos_hectos

Amy Sommerville

They have superstars across the court, but it’s hard to go past dynamic playmaker Stephanie Wood. A creative Goal Attack, Steph is especially dangerous for a couple reasons.

Date of Birth: 26 Jun 1991 Height: 180cm Position/Role: GD/GK Caps: 0

ASommerville93

Firstly, she has a great ability to read the contest as well as feed the circle, which really brings Caitlin Bassett into the game.

EmmaTickner

Sam Wallace

Secondly, she can shoot. Steph regularly contributes goals to Lightning’s score. So when she’s not feeding into CBass, she’s backing herself to go to post. After recently returning to court, Steph has really been building so it will be important to shut her down today to get the win.

OPEN BEEF & BEETROOT BURGERS 40 mins | Main Course | Makes 4-6

Ingredients • 500g lean beef mince • 1 small onion, finely chopped • 1 free-range egg, lightly beaten • 1/4 cup (40g) Bioglan Organic Chia Seeds • 2 tbsp Bioglan Organic Beetroot Powder • 1 tbsp chopped fresh rosemary • 1 heaped tsp dijon mustard • sea salt & cracked black pepper • 1 tbsp olive oil • Lettuce leaves • Tomato slices • Whatever topping you like!

Method 1. Put the beef, onion, egg, egg, chia seeds, beetroot powder, rosemary and mustard in a bowl. Season with the salt and pepper, and mix well with your hands to combine. 2. Divide mixture into four large patties, or six smaller patties. Hint: roll the small amounts of the mixture in your palms, before flattening in the pan. 3. Heat the oil in a large frying pan or on a flat barbecue plate. Once the surface is smoking a little, cook the patties over medium heat for 7 - 10 minutes on each side; cooking time depends on thickness and your preferred taste (Rare, Medium, Well Done). 4. Once cooked through, serve the patties topped with lettuce, tomato...or whatever else you like in a burger. I went with sliced cucumber and grated carrot, yum! 5. Best served with your favourite side salad or roast vegies...or if it’s a cheat day, a handful of tasty hot chips!
