COACH’S MESSAGE

JULIE FITZGERALD, HEAD COACH

Welcome to Round 1 of the 2019 season, GIANTS Netball members and fans. With each new beginning there is a sense of anticipation and as we begin the 2019 season there is so much to look forward to. From welcoming new GIANTS to the court, to celebrating milestones and looking ahead to the Netball World Cup, 2019 is going to be a big year for netball and for your GIANTS. Our focus this off-season has been on coming together as a united side that approaches games with drive and focus, but who never forgets the importance of enjoying the journey and what

drew us together in the first place - our love of the game. This season, we welcome four new players to the GIANTS and with them comes the possibilities of exciting combinations and the chance to witness new talent and new skills. I know that you’ll love watching these players in orange as much as I have enjoyed coaching them so far. Today we take on our state rivals the NSW Swifts in what has become one of the most popular match-ups in the SSN league. The Derby is quickly becoming an honoured tradition across all sports codes in the state and it is with pride that we contest the

Carole Sykes Memorial Trophy – named after a person who gave so much to help develop netball in NSW and ensure its longevity. It is particularly noteworthy, as 2019 is also a landmark year for netball in the state as we celebrate 90 Years of Netball NSW. Thank you for being here with us today. We are thrilled to be able to play our first game as a new-look GIANTS side at home in front of our wonderful members and fans at the world-class Qudos Bank Arena and we can’t wait to see you in the crowd at each home game this year.

FEATURE

Priceless EXPERIENCE JAMIE-LEE PRICE WILL START THE 2019 SEASON AS ONE OF THE MOST EXPERIENCED NETBALLERS ON THE GIANTS NETBALL TEAM, EVEN THOUGH SHE IS JUST 23-YEARS-OLD.

Price, an established midcourter, has 77 elite caps to her name and four international caps and has become a player that Head Coach Julie Fitzgerald can rely on to make an impact on court at vital moments. As one of the inaugural GIANTS, Price has been there for the whole GIANTS journey so far – from forming the first squad, to saying goodbye to departing teammates last year and the addition of four new faces to the GIANTS team this year. Price has enjoyed welcoming her new teammates – Caitlin Bassett, Matilda McDonell, Amy Parmenter and Teigan O’Shannassy – to the side and the team have been relishing their recent pre-season hit outs for the chance they have afforded them to develop important team chemistry. “For us the pre-season has been good because we’re quite a new team and we have a few new faces, so it’s good that we have had a few pre-season games to get to know each other and get to know how we play and our

06

strengths and weaknesses,” Price says. The GIANTS are certainly ready to get back out on court after the busy pre-season. “Everyone is pretty pumped to get out there. We’ve got a good balance of experience and young players. The new young girls in the team bring a lot of energy and excitement,” Price shares. Price also can’t wait to see the new GIANTS take to the court in their orange dresses. “I just love everyone and I’m just really excited to see them get out on court and debut and have that experience. The feeling of debuting is something that you remember forever so I hope everyone gets to play,” she says. Looking back at a whirlwind 2018, Price still seems somewhat disbelieving of her elevation to the Australian Diamonds team as Diamond #176. “Last year, it all seemed to happen really quickly. Firstly, becoming a squad member, which was really exciting and then getting the phone call from Lisa Alexander saying that I’ll be going

to the Constellation Cup. It was really surreal and I didn’t expect that at all. “Being named in the Quad Series this year was even better and getting quite a decent amount of game time was such a great experience,” shares Price. Price believes in keeping things in perspective though and never taking for granted the opportunities that come along with her success and Diamonds inclusion, including the drive to excellence that comes with being a member of the national side. “You can never feel too comfortable in the Diamonds, just because you’re always being pushed and trying to be better than what you are and you’re just surrounded by very talented and also experienced players. But I’m definitely finding my way and gaining a better understanding of what to expect as a Diamond,” she explains. Still, Price knows that putting too much focus on the Diamonds and her role in the side is no way to operate and that focus should always remain in the here and

now and firmly grounded in Club competition during the season. “If you’re not performing for your Club then you’re not going to get picked for the Diamonds. We went into camp a few weeks ago and we obviously had a bit of a trial where they kind of had a look at us there, but they’ll definitely be looking in the Club environment as well. “You have to keep going just like normal - you always want to play well for your Club and your teammates, so as long as I’m doing that it should be good,” Price shares. When it comes to her Club, one of the most exciting things about the 2019 GIANTS team is the versatility of the players and the resulting array of combinations that presents Head Coach Julie Fitzgerald with. Price has set a personal goal to be a key part of that. “For me, my aim for this year is being able to confidently play in both positions, because I feel like being versatile as a player helps a lot. If I’m as confident at Centre as I am in Wing Defence then that

PRICE IN ACTION ROUND 7 2018 SEASON

just gives the option for Julie to be able to put me or Parmy (Amy Parmenter) or Kim (Green) in those roles and just rotate if she has to. “I definitely think playing more at Centre will help. And the more that you do play, the more that you learn,” she states.

the first Derby, after winning the match by just one goal, in a game that certainly wasn’t typical of the GIANTS type of play. “That first game that we played them last year we only just lost and we did not play well at all. But that gave us a lot of motivation,” says Price.

...THE MORE THAT YOU DO PLAY, THE MORE THAT YOU LEARN There is no better game with which to start the season and allow the GIANTS to test themselves than the NSW Derby. With state pride on the line and a short but intense history behind it, The Derby is one of the most anticipated events on the Suncorp Super Netball calendar. “Over the last few years The Derby - especially last year - has created a lot of rivalry. It is so intense now,” says Price. The 2018 match ups personified this, especially with the Swifts being awarded the Carole Sykes Memorial Trophy in

The GIANTS reclaimed the Trophy in the second 2018 Derby, with a dominant and resounding 10-goal win, in a game that was much more in line with their usual style of play against their rivals. “The second game we played them we definitely had a lot to play for - we didn’t want that feeling ever again. “We just want that Trophy really. We definitely feel prepared. The word that comes to mind more than anything is “ready”. We can’t wait to play,” Price concludes. ¼

90 YEARS OF NETBALL NSW

CAROLE SYKES MEMORIAL TROPHY, 2018

THE INAUGURAL DERBY: ROUND 1, 2017 SEASON

One of the most anticipated contests on the Suncorp Super Netball calendar, the NSW Derby sees GIANTS Netball and their state rivals the Swifts go head-tohead for the first win of the 2019 season, home state bragging rights and the honour of taking home the coveted Carole Sykes Memorial Trophy! A legend of NSW netball, Carole Sykes displayed great pride in representing New South Wales and played a key role in developing some of this State’s finest netball athletes. A former NSW Captain and representative, Carole turned her hand to coaching after retiring – helping steer NSW to three National Netball and three ESSO Mobil League titles. She was also a former Australian player and coach, and is a member of the Netball NSW Hall of Fame. The Derby brings together the best netballers playing in the state in a showcase of elite netball skill and is now a not-tobe-missed event on the national sports calendar. Each NSW team took home a Derby win in 2018, with the Swifts beating the GIANTS by just one goal (55-54) in a hard-fought and intense Round 3 game, while the GIANTS regained the Carole Sykes Memorial Trophy in their last meeting in 2018, with a 66-56 win over their hometown rivals. In 2017, GIANTS Netball secured both Derby wins and with the

THIS YEAR, THE DERBY IS PARTICULARLY SPECIAL AS NETBALL NSW CELEBRATES 90 YEARS... split in wins in 2018, the passion and rivalry will be amped up even further in 2019. This year, the Derby is particularly special as Netball NSW celebrates 90 Years of operation – with the two elite teams being the pinnacle of netball in the state, but by no means are they all there is. Netball NSW has been growing for 90 years now and in 2018 the organisation boasted record registrations of over 115,000. From grassroots to elite, Netball NSW offers and facilitates programs and initiatives that help to support and to grow the sport of netball in NSW, including providing pathways for players to further their pursuits so they can one day take to the court as a GIANT. With the continued support of players, administrators, officials, associations, members and fans, there is no limit to where netball can go in the next 90 years! ¼
