COACH’S MESSAGE

JULIE FITZGERALD, HEAD COACH

Thank you to our wonderful Members and fans for joining us at Round 6 of the 2019 Suncorp Super Netball season. Today we return to Qudos Bank Arena after two games on the road and we are excited to get to play in front of our enthusiastic home crowd. After a slow start to the season, I have seen the team continue to improve and progress with each game, both individually and as a group. Your GIANTS

have been getting comfortable with combinations that utilise the depth of talent within the team and we know that this will continue to develop, which we hope will lead us to secure more crucial points as our 2019 campaign progresses. Today’s game sees us take on the Adelaide Thunderbirds who, as another team with plenty of new faces this year, are proving to be strong competitors in the

2019 season. There is no doubt this game will be fierce, with both teams having a point to prove, but we hope to put in a performance that will make our home crowd proud. Enjoy today’s game, cheer loudly and we look forward to your continued support throughout the season.

A GIANT

Change

IT TAKES A (NEW) TEAM TO BUILD A GIANT. AFTER MUCH SUCCESS THROUGHOUT HER NETBALL CAREER, CAITLIN BASSETT HAS MADE THE MOVE TO THE GIANTS AS SHE CONTINUES TO CHALLENGE HERSELF BOTH ON AND OFF THE COURT. When she signed her contract to join a new Club after two years of reaching the heights of success with one team, Caitlin Bassett had no idea that the exciting new journey she had chosen to undertake would run into one huge roadblock. This came in the form of a fractured arm, which she sustained while training for the Quad Series with the Australian Diamonds in January. “It was super frustrating and obviously not the start I wanted to my GIANTS journey,” says Bassett of how she felt about coming into the GIANTS Netball team as a fresh face and not being able to immediately get out on court with her new team. There was a silver lining to the injury though, it was that she was able to get to know some members of the GIANTS Netball support staff better. “I’ve obviously worked really closely with Gemma (Vale) and Simone (Freeman), so I think it’s like a blessing in disguise, as it’s actually made me feel really at home,” says Bassett of the GIANTS Netball Physiotherapist and Strength and Conditioning Coach, who have been there with her every step of the way during her road to recovery. “Simone has been awesome. Part of what I’ve always had to work really hard on is my strength in the gym and she has been amazing in giving me flexibility and coming in for extra sessions and really pushing me to get back

and to be fitter and stronger than before and I’m definitely seeing the results. “I’m really happy with that and I think it’s because of the time and effort that Gemma, Simone and Jess (Spendlove GIANTS Nutritionist) have put into helping me get back out there, along with the national support staff who have been overlooking from afar,” says Bassett. Beyond the physical recovery and growth, Bassett has found that going through rehab has also helped her mental resilience and allowed her to develop a new perspective on things. As a player with almost 200 national caps (she sits at 188 after Round 5), who just surpassed 7,000 national league goals in last weeks’ match against Sunshine Coast Lightning, it’s a novel experience. “I am an experienced player slash veteran and up to this stage I haven’t really had any major injuries, so this has been a big learning curve for me. I’ve focused on setting small targets and goals and not getting frustrated and staying positive around the group. These are things that I’ve never had to do before, but I found a different perspective that gave me a lot of excitement and eagerness to get back on court, which I haven’t had in a long time,” Bassett explains. Speaking of being back on court, six rounds into the season Bassett is feeling confident that she is getting back to one hundred

percent and settling in to her new team. After an exceptionally short pre-season in which to work on chemistry and combinations, she also believes that the GIANTS will continue to build on the moments of brilliance the team have shown already this season. “It has been a slow start and I think we’re just finally seeing some great connections out on court now, which makes me really excited, but it would have been nice to have those connections in the first couple of rounds,” she shares. While it has been tough, the GIANTS less than ideal start wasn’t a wholly unexpected result for the team. “We kind of expected things to take a while to click. Jules (Julie Fitzgerald) was always very open about that. The first couple of games we were obviously disappointed, but we were aware that we probably really only trained as a full team for the last week before the first game of the 2019 season. “We do have high expectations for ourselves and we do push each other very hard and it’s about getting better with every single game and I think we’re seeing that so far. So while we have strung some wins together, it’s important for us to keep building on that and to keep working because it’s a really tough competition and we know that if we’re going to be in the top four at the end of the season then

we need to be working to get as many points as possible. “We’ve got the personnel to be the most lethal attacking end in the competition and Julie said it from the get go and I can definitely see it now. The physical capabilities of Kim (Green), Jo (Harten), Kiera (Austin) and JamieLee (Price) are just amazing. For us, when we get that ball moving, when we are connecting and talking out there on court, it’s hard to stop (us). We not only have that youth and that physical presence that Jamie-Lee and Kip bring, but

in the circle and holding and being available for that ball, but I think mixing it up in what myself and Kiera and Jo can do with a bit of movement is really exciting. “With defenders getting smarter and more physical these days, you actually have to be on your toes for the whole 60 minutes of netball. So, for me it’s about making sure that I’ve always got things in my kit to be able to bring out and challenge myself as a leader out there and making sure that I’m doing the best to give to my team around me,” she says.

“I have really enjoyed seeing Kristiana Manu’a back out in that goal defence position and really staking that claim for that starting spot. I was there when she made her debut for Diamonds and I was bitterly disappointed for her when she had her Achilles injury, but she’s come back so strong and the work that she’s done against some of the best goal attacks in the world I think has been underrated so far,” says Bassett. As to what’s been keeping the team motivated through the first five rounds, during which they’ve

...I’VE FOUND A DIFFERENT PERSPECTIVE THAT GAVE ME A LOT OF EXCITEMENT AND EAGERNESS TO GET BACK ON COURT, WHICH I HAVEN’T HAD IN A LONG TIME. it’s also that experience and that level headedness that Kim brings as well that you can’t write off,” says Bassett. On the topic of what players can bring to the court, Bassett believes that joining the GIANTS is helping her develop her personal game in new ways. “I’d settled into a nice combination with Stephanie Wood at Sunshine Coast Lightning, which transferred over to Diamonds, but I think now I’m being challenged to develop more strings in my bow, which is exciting. Yes, I love being a target

She has also relished the opportunity to reconnect with some old friends on the team and develop connections with new teammates, and there are a few examples that stand out. “Having that connection back with Kim Green has been awesome and we laugh and joke when we’re out on court. “Getting to know Jo Harten better in that shooting circle I’ve obviously watched her play from the other end of the court for many years and it’s great to finally be in the circle mixing it up with her.

recorded three losses and two wins, Bassett says that it’s simple. “The motivation is to enjoy ourselves out there. You can see it on our faces - you see Amy Parmenter with a giant smile on her face and Jo wears her heart on her sleeve when she’s out there on court. “It’s bringing that enjoyment back to netball. We work extremely hard and we make so many sacrifices to be here, but at the end of the day when you go out there it is a game and so we want to enjoy it,” Bassett explains. ¼
