HERE COME THE GIANTS I am thrilled to welcome you to our newest venue, the International Convention Centre Sydney. We are excited to be here in the heart of the city to showcase the best of NSW netballers in the second Derby of the season. We are also proud that this Round is the inaugural Suncorp Super Netball leaguewide Indigenous Round. It is an honour to recognise the valued contributions that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women have made, and continue to make, to our sport and the wider community. Today the team will wear the first GIANTS Netball Indigenous dress, the design of the dress is one that echoes the important place that community and family have in the team culture. It was designed by 16 year old Krystal Dallinger who was mentored by GIANTS Netball defender Sam Poolman. The artwork reflects the connection that we share and celebrates people coming together as one team under one sky. We hope you enjoy the game that will be played today with the passion and respect deserved for this Round. Thank you for your ongoing support and for being here today as we do battle with our state rivals, the NSW Swifts.

SPOTLIGHT GIANTS V SWIFTS The GIANTS did battle with fellow NSW team, the NSW Swifts in Round 3 of the 2018 season at Qudos Bank Arena, going down to them for the first time, 55-54. This was the third Derby meeting for the state rivals and the first two victories during the 2017 season in Round 1 (58-53) and Round 7 (59-56) went to the GIANTS. They almost took the third win, but fell just short in the final seconds of the game. It was an intense match from the initial centre pass and the passion could be felt from both sides as each team did their best to claim as many bonus points as possible and secure the victory. The game is remembered by some for the extreme physicality, which will ensure today’s match will be one for the history books. Today the GIANTS will be out to secure the win and reclaim the Carole Sykes Memorial Trophy.

KRYSTAL CLEAR VISION 16 year old Krystal Dallinger – the artist who created the artwork design for the GIANTS Netball Indigenous Round dress – has a personal connection to the team and a meaningful story to share through her art. The Round 10 match between GIANTS Netball and NSW Swifts is not only the second NSW Derby of 2018 for the state rivals, it is also part of the first ever league-wide Suncorp Super Netball Indigenous Round. It’s a Round that will recognise the valued contributions that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women have made, and continue to make, to the sport and the wider community, which is in line with the 2018 NAIDOC Week theme ‘Because of Her, We Can’. Today both teams are taking to the court in specially designed Indigenous dresses. This is in recognition of the importance of working towards an inclusive future and an acknowledgement that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander players and participants are an integral part of the past, present and future of netball in this country. GIANTS Netball in particular have a personal connection to the design of their dress. 16 year old Krystal Dallinger – who is of the Kamilaroi Nation of Walgett, Lightning Ridge & Angledool in Western NSW – was mentored by GIANTS Netball defender Sam Poolman as an up-and-coming netballer. To thank Poolman for this, she gifted her with a hat decorated with Indigenous designs. “It’s pretty amazing,” says Poolman of the gift. “It’s a GIANTS Netball hat and on the top it has a turtle – similar to our dress – and a waterhole on it and then on the back there is painted a netball and my name (is) written. She told me how it took her months to do it for me and I was so taken aback.” It was such a special moment that Poolman told her teammates about it and the GIANTS team then surprised Dallinger with an invitation for her to design their Indigenous Round dress.

“The last day of school we went to her school and I surprised her and asked her if she wanted to do it,” says Poolman. “After I told her she cried and then her mum cried when she came to pick her up.” “It’s just absolutely amazing,” Dallinger says of the experience Her mother, Caroline, agrees “It’s such an honour,” she says. “Netball is our sport. Netball is what brought us so close. We are a small community in Dubbo and a lot of our friends and people we call family have been brought together by netball.” "So to hear the stories of the GIANTS not just coming from all around Australia, but coming from around the world and coming together to play the sport we love - and the team we love - representing our culture, it's such a proud moment." For Dallinger, the dress artwork reflects the connection that we share and each element tells an important part of the story. “We're all connected by a waterhole which is one community which could be like a netball community or family community - so we're all connected and somehow it all comes together to create a massive seamless design. The stars mean that we're all under the one sky, which means we're all connected. Same as the rivers and the waterholes,” she explains. “I’ve done the goanna, which to me represents the country and where I’m from, which is Dubbo,” Dallinger says. ”There‘s one big and two small (turtles), so it’s representing my family. Because I have an older brother I follow behind everyone. So I follow in everyone’s footsteps and we all come together as a family.” “It’s my interpretation of how everyone comes together under the one sky playing for the GIANTS and playing for their club and just doing what they love,” she sums up. ¼

DERBY HISTORY CAROLE SYKES MEMORIAL TROPHY During 40 years of service to netball in this State, Carole Sykes embodied the spirit of the game in NSW and this trophy symbolises her passion for the sport. Netball NSW’s two Suncorp Super Netball franchises, GIANTS Netball and NSW Swifts, don’t just battle for competition points when they meet in the regular season they fight for the right to lift a trophy named after an icon. A former NSW Captain and Representative, Carole turned her hand to coaching after retiring, helping steer NSW to three National Netball and three ESSO Mobil League titles. She also played and coached for Australia and was inducted into the Netball NSW Hall of Fame. We play in her memory.

FUEL YOUR BODY LIKE A GIANT ENERGY BALLS

HERE’S A GUIDE TO GET YOU STARTED:

Energy balls, sometimes called protein balls, are small bite size doses of energy dense goodness, ideal for people short on time with high energy demands.

1 CUP BINDER – a sticky dried fruit which will hold it all together. This forms the base of the ball. E.g. Fresh Medjool dates, dried prunes, soft dried apricots, dried figs (depending on the brand, should have consistency of a prune).

In most cases, they contain a small amount of protein, unless protein powder has been added. However, because they only have a fraction of the protein needed to recover from training, they make a better snack for slow release energy outside of training times. They are a healthy and yummy way to satisfy those hungry moments between meals.

1/2 CUP NUTS AND/OR SEEDS – this will help to hold the shape and give texture and form. E.g. Almonds, cashews, walnuts, brazil nuts, sesame seeds, peptitas, sunflower seeds.

There is no one set recipe for energy balls, so you can really personalise the flavour!

1-2TBSP POWDER – not essential but will reduce the amount of nuts needed for texture and can help get the right consistency depending on what binder you use. E.g. Almond meal, hazelnut meal, cocoa, coconut, oats or protein powder.

There are some key ingredients to get the formula and consistency required, but because there is such a big range of flavours to choose from, the options are endless.

For the best result, add each ingredient in the above order and blend them together before adding the next. A food processor makes it easier to blend and bind ingredients. OPTIONAL EXTRAS If your creation seems a little dry, you can add honey, peanut butter or orange juice to bind the mix together. You want it to be soft, but still hold shape like dough. For added zing you could add the zest of lemon or orange, or other dried fruit like cranberries or goji berries (although these aren’t sticky enough to be the binder)
