HERE COME THE GIANTS Welcome to Round 7, GIANTS Netball members and fans. We now find ourselves halfway through the season and what a journey it has already been. Week after week your GIANTS have been fighting fierce battles against formidable teams to secure valuable victories and crucial bonus points. The season so far has been a showcase of spectacular sporting prowess and some of the best netball I have ever had the pleasure of watching – and at the heart of this is a united and resilient GIANTS group, who are proving again and again that they are a match for any team in the league. It has been an unpredictable season so far, with the new bonus points system putting the Suncorp Super Netball Ladder in constant flux and injecting new intensity into the games. Your GIANTS have proven to be up to the task of winning not only games, but also quarters, and they have been delivering strategic plays, sharp shooting, tough defence and breathtaking moments along the way.

Standing in their path today is the strong Collingwood Magpies Netball team. This is a club that the GIANTS played against in one of the most important games of their inaugural season – the 2017 Suncorp Super Netball Semi-Final. It was a game that the GIANTS won, sending them to the Preliminary Final on the way to the Grand Final. Tonight is no less important, as we look to head into the second half of the season on the back of a victory at home. This round we return to the spectacular Qudos Bank Arena. It is always a highlight for us to play in front of a home crowd. Thank you for being there on our journey so far and we look forward to sharing the rest of the ride with you.

SPOTLIGHT GIANTS V MAGPIES GIANTS Netball faced Collingwood Magpies Netball three times during the 2017 Suncorp Super Netball Season. The last time was in the thrilling and close Semi-Final match up, where GIANTS came back from a six goal deficit in the fourth quarter to edge ahead by one goal and beat Magpies 52-51, advancing to the Preliminary Final. With a line-up that includes current Australian Diamonds Caitlin Thwaites, Madi Robinson, April Brandley and Kim Ravaillion, it’s never a good idea to underestimate the skill at hand in the Magpies' side. In the circle, the GIANTS will need to shut down the firepower of Thwaites and Erin Bell, who can prove to be game-changers when momentum swings in their favour. Mid-court battles will be won by keeping control of the flow of the game and disrupting Collingwood’s plays, with mind to the capabilities of Ravaillion and Robinson. While on the defensive end, Brandley and Sharni Layton are a pair that will put pressure on the GIANTS’ attack, with the team needing to continue the strong circle work and accurate feeding they have displayed so far this season.

CONFIDENT GIRLS As we support the hard work and important message of the Confident Girls Foundation, GIANTS Netball Captain Kim Green talks about empowering and inspiring young netballers. During Round 7, we are recognising and supporting Netball Australia’s Confident Girls Foundation. The Confident Girls Foundation was created to help provide opportunities for vulnerable girls through netball. Working with partners across the community in Australia, the Confident Girls Foundation helps create and run inclusive programs. The purpose of the foundation is to eliminate barriers in the way of advancement for vulnerable girls including gender bias, financial obstacles, an absence of leadership prospects, seclusion, negative gender stereotypes and hurdles barring the way for physical activity. GIANTS Netball Captain Kim Green is an advocate for providing support to up-and-coming netballers. As someone who works to provide mentorship to young players and has been mentored herself, Green is vocal about the importance of such programs. “I've had lots of mentors throughout my time. I think every player, every coach, every person, I often try and take something from them. I've been under some amazing leaders like the likes of Liz Ellis and Cath Cox. Julie Fitzgerald is a major mentor of mine. There's always something that you can learn from someone else,” she says of her own experience having mentors. “Mentors are really important because they actually give you insight into different ways of thinking”. At the core of the Confident Girls Foundation’s mission is creating opportunities for young girls who may not have many avenues to access the sport, ultimately empowering them and building them up to become strong women who have the confidence to go after their dreams – be they on the netball court or in other areas in life. As someone who works to empower and inspire young players, Green is a strong believer in the power of netball and the netball community.

Green herself started playing semi-elite netball at a young age and, as a player coming up through the pathways, she understands the important role that netball can play in building social connections for girls and women and helping them expand their horizons. “I was picked up at 16 and was hanging out with the big girls that were 30 and I sort of looked at that and realised that I had to learn pretty quickly how to think laterally and to think differently to other people,” Green shares. “I remember when I first got picked, mum said to me ‘Make sure you don't go hang out with your mates. Go and sit with people that you don't normally speak to otherwise they're going to forget you very quickly’. And that was the best advice she ever gave me”. “I think building connections is one of the most important things,” she explains. “You can learn so much from so many people”. There is a special place in Green’s heart for being a mentor to young players and being there to guide them and inspire them to experience the value in netball and ultimately, the value and power that is within themselves. “It's a powerful tool to have,”says Green of mentoring. “Just to see the difference from the girls when they enter to where they finish up is incredible and I think yes their netballing skills do come along, but it's just the confidence that they actually back themselves to do what they need to do out there”. It’s something that Green finds to be one of the most rewarding things about helping to mentor and give opportunities to young players. “These girls are just starting to recognise that they can be confident and they can do whatever they want to do and it's just (with) a couple of people backing them,” shares Green. The Foundation sees netball as a safe environment in which girls can develop and prosper. It aims to invest in programs that assist and encourage girls to succeed – empowering them to be their best. Beyond that, it acknowledges the power that netball, and sport in general, has in creating opportunities to girls to be physical, social and look after their mental and physical wellbeing, all of which are key in building the confidence and skills needed for future success. ¼

THE BRICE IS RIGHT Shooter Kristina Brice is confident and steady on the court. She considers her netball journey and how the sport connects her with her family. Born in Baulkham Hills, progressing through the pathways at the Mt Druitt and Baulkham Hills netball associations and now a GIANT, Kristina Brice is Western Sydney through and through. It’s not every day that an elite athlete will get to play for a club at a professional level within their home town area, and it’s something that gives Brice a unique link to the region. It’s also an important part of the sense of family and community that has been so integral to Brice’s journey. It’s a journey that has taken her to other states (as a trainee at the AIS in Canberra and a member of the Adelaide Thunderbirds), but one in which home and family has remained central and close to her heart. Brice describes her pathway to the GIANTS as one where she has “sort of been here there and everywhere and had to adapt everywhere I went.” Still, through all of that change and movement there has been one steady presence and Brice

knows that she is lucky to have the support of her loved ones along the way. “My family are so supportive,” she says. “My parents have been supportive of everything. Same with my sister and my brother. They're just sort of happy that we've found something that we love to do and they just support it one hundred percent”. “They come down to pretty much all away games. Last year I think the only game they missed out on was the Sunshine Coast game, but they were there when we played Sunshine Coast in pre-season last year,” she explains. A mischievous smile from Brice foreshadows an additional comment and an affectionately cheeky dig at her mum and dad. “I think they definitely enjoy the Adelaide trip more because of the wineries. It's more like wineries with a bit of netball thrown in there,” Brice laughs. There are other small ways, beyond cheering her on courtside, that her parents support Brice. “Dad does all my washing - I'm not sure he's quite happy about it - but he always leaves a load of washing so that when I bring my stuff home from training I can sort of throw it straight into the machine afterwards,” Brice says. Sometimes it those small things that make all the difference.

It’s also having loved ones around to share life with off the court, which Brice acknowledges is made easier by the fact that she lives with her family. While they all lead busy lives with differing schedules, Brice says that the family finds time when they can to get together. “Whenever we're at home, definitely it's such a good environment to be in, everyone talks about how their day was and all that sort of stuff so I still get to catch up with them and find out what's going on,” Brice shares. It’s a family where skills in sport certainly aren’t lacking, as Brice’s sister and brother are both actively involved in the netball community as well. “My sister, she's only just sort of come back out of retirement,” Brice says. “She's done that about three times now. So she plays and then she decides she's going to retire and then someone entices her back to play. So she's playing Metro League Division Three out here (at Genea Netball Centre in Sydney Olympic Park) on a Monday Night,” Brice shares, acknowledging that a passion for netball is something her sibling shares. It doesn’t end there for the Brice family and their relationship with netball. “My brother just recently decided to stop playing basketball and he's gotten into mens netball. So he played the Aussie Men's Mixed National tournament down here in April and then ended up making the Australian side from that,” Brice says with pride.

“He goes down to Adelaide this year,” she says, “so I'm sure mum and dad will be down there with him.” That’s another perfect shot from Brice. “Hopefully I'll maybe get some time off as well to go down and watch him play,” she continues. There is another family she spends plenty of time with. One which has had a major impact in Brice’s life and they wear orange with pride. “The GIANTS family is such an unreal environment,” Brice marvels. “Like it's nothing I've ever experienced before,” says Brice. “Even with the footy boys and the footy girls, they love to get around the netty. The girls came down and watched us in a couple of preseason games and I definitely love being able to get out there to watch the boys play and then they come down and support us as well. So it's definitely something new and I absolutely love it,” she says. ¼

TRAINING TIPS GIANTS NETBALL STRENGTH & CONDITIONING COACH SIMONE FREEMAN SHOWS US HOW TO MANAGE TRAINING DURING INTENSIVE PERIODS. As the GIANTS Netball team’s Strength & Conditioning Coach, Simone Freeman sees first-hand the demands that a professional sports careers can have on athletes. She shares some tips on managing a training schedule around intense schedules.

1 Identify in your program the best weeks to get good volumes of training in. This may be weeks with longer turn arounds between your games, no travel, etc. This will allow you to plan ahead and give you an opportunity during intense weeks with short turn arounds and heavy travel to pull back somewhat. You can do this by reducing the volume of training, but still have good hits of high intensity work throughout.

Gym work or weights need to follow the same pattern as your on-court loading strategy. For example, on weeks that you have the opportunity to get a good volume of work in, this needs to correlate with the amount of gym work as well. Weeks where we pull back on court, you need to reduce the volume in the gym. This gives you the opportunity to truly reduce or chase for volumes. 2

3 Get the basics of recovery done well. Sleeping and eating are your core components, these need to be down pat before your 1% can come into play.
