This issue will provide a glimpse into our upcoming spring quarter and a recap of our busy and exciting winter quarter. In May, we recognize Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month. Welcome back to an exciting spring quarter! I am honored and privileged to serve as the new Director of the Asian American Studies Program (AASP). Our department has dynamic and inspiring faculty as well as bright and engaged students. It is very clear that Northwestern students care deeply about race and Asian American issues and we are pleased to lead important discussions related to these topics. It is my sincere hope that the Northwestern community continues to benefit from the multiple perspectives on campus and the diversity that surrounds us. I encourage you to actively participate in ways that allow you to extend beyond your personal comfort zone. Dialogues about provocative questions, attending events sponsored by various departments and student groups, and speaking to those with whom you’ve never held a conversation, are all ways to maximize your time at Northwestern. MSA INC This quarter’s MSA INC featured African American Studies professor Dr. Martha Biondi. She presented research from her new book, “The Black Revolution on Campus,” to be published this summer. Biondi’s look at how student-led movements for civil rights in the late 1960’s led to the creation of offices like African American Student Affairs was enlightening and inspirational. Over 30 faculty, staff, and students were in attendance for this co-sponsorship between Multicultural Student Affairs and African American Studies. Make sure to join us for the next MSA INC in May!
Harambee A/AASA & NU-A5 Student & Alumni Networking Reception A total of 40 students and alumni attended the Asian/Asian American Student Affairs & NU-A5 Student Alumni Networking Reception to share current experiences, success stories and practical advice. Alumni from a wide range of industries encouraged students to develop relationships with professionals in their field. The event was a great success that fostered a strong connection between students and alumni. We look forward to nd hosting the 2 annual reception next year!
Latino Networking Gala Hispanic/Latino Student Affairs and the Latino Alumni of Northwestern University th (LANU) kicked off winter quarter with the 7 annual Latino Networking Gala. The event attracted over 75 guests for an evening of networking and community building. Northwestern alumnus Rodrigo Sierra (CAS ’95) spoke about the importance of developing and sustaining professional networks while also giving back to your community.
The annual Harambee celebration kicked off this year’s Black History Month with one of the largest turnouts in recent memory. The joint effort between African American Student Affairs and For Members Only resulted in an event that reflected African, Caribbean, and African American culture that received rave reviews from the more than 250 participants.

Elections Preparation Workshop In February, MSA invited student leaders to discuss effective student group elections. Leaders gained knowledge and new insight into goal setting, process planning, community building, and outreach. Students had the opportunity to build a timeline that thoroughly considered each important component. Those in attendance were excited to learn new ways to use elections as a community-building tool, one that could foster strength and stability for the group’s members. Students also learned about the complexities of the election process and how to design and execute an effective election.
