MSA Quarterly Newsletter Fall 2012

Dear Northwestern Community Members ~ I am pleased to share important updates from Multicultural Student Affairs (MSA). As of July 2012, we officially welcomed the LGBT Resource Center as our fourth unit, with Devin Moss joining us to serve as Director. Colleen Keefe and Maria GenaoHoms also joined Team MSA as Program Assistant and Assistant Director, respectively. Our newest staff members have completed their onboarding schedules and are quickly adopting the MSA Purple PRIDE philosophy - Personal Responsibility In Delivering Excellence, an acronym derived from our fall professional development reading, The Leadership Challenge by Kouzes & Posner! Please stop by the Multicultural Center at 1936 Sheridan Road to meet Colleen, African American Student Affairs at 1914 Sheridan Road to see Maria, and Norris Student Center, 3rd floor to greet Devin. In addition to helping our newest members acclimate to Northwestern, we are continuing to enhance all three MSA spaces, sponsor vibrant community programs, capitalize on our connections with alumni and faculty partners, offer diverse trainings and presentations, advise our 60+ student groups, and provide individual support to our students in a variety of ways. On behalf of the MSA staff, I hope your quarter has been positive and productive and that you enjoy a happy holiday season! Sincerely, Tamara A. Johnson, Ph.D.

Our Spaces We have new furniture in all three MSA locations! Our spaces are particularly important as we strive to create an atmosphere where students feel safe and comfortable. It is our hope that the new furniture enhances the experience of those who consider our spaces a home away from home! Faculty and staff, we welcome you to hold office hours in our spaces based on your availability. As a reminder, please consider reserving our conference room spaces for your meetings by calling (847) 467-6200.

The LGBT Resource Center Norris Student Center, 3rd floor Summer Academic Workshop (SAW) Prior to Wildcat Welcome, Multicultural Student Affairs and the Associate Provost for Undergraduate Education host a two-week program that provides new students with an opportunity to strengthen writing skills across the University curriculum and develop a supportive social network for the next four years. Since 1966, SAW has welcomed over 1,400 students to campus and we are excited to present the 37 members of our 2012 class!

Through the years, Ms. Jerre was known for her sincere dedication to students, particularly within the African American community. She is highly regarded among students and alumni, who consistently express great appreciation for her time, compassion, and commitment. Those of us who had the opportunity to work closely with Ms. Jerre really appreciated her calm presence, wisdom, and support. It is a pretty amazing accomplishment to celebrate over 40 years of service and it was an honor to extend best wishes to Ms. Jerre as she retired from Northwestern to begin the next phase of her life!

Greetings! As the Assistant Provost for Diversity and Inclusion, I am excited to share our efforts to create and sustain a welcoming and stimulating campus. We have established the University Diversity Council which advises the President and Provost on issues related to diversity and inclusion. This Council oversees five workgroups comprised of students, faculty, staff, and alumni that discuss and identify efforts to embrace the vast array of social and cultural aspects of our community. Group members have been meeting over the past several months and are building upon past successes and developing new ideas that will truly allow us to experience the benefits of a diverse and inclusive community. The commitment and energy of those involved on the Council, the workgroups, and other supporters of this work, is inspiring. We look forward to results of these efforts positively impacting the lives of the Northwestern community members and I will share more specific information in the coming months. Go Cats! Dona M.
