When thinking about what to write for this month’s jump off, I found myself writing the usual cliché holiday things. I planned on writing about the beauty of Christmas lights dangling from rooftops and the joy that comes from walking through the Christmas section as holiday music plays throughout the store. I don’t want to do that. Don’t get me wrong; I love the holidays. My personal Christmas tree has been up and decorated since a week before Thanksgiving. I just think it’s important to see past the commercial side of the holidays. People seem to forget that this season is for giving and for forgiving. It’s for self-reflection and setting goals for the upcoming year. I’ve seen kids posting on Facebook about how angry they are because their parents get them something ridiculously overpriced, which is just mindboggling to me. It makes me think, “Well, at least you have a family to spend the holidays with and parents who care enough to give you a gift in the first place. That isn’t the case for a lot of kids.” I’m not here to shame anyone for our excessively consumerist culture or blame capitalism for our nation’s apathy (but I probably will do so in a future book, if I ever get a book published). In fact, everyone deserves to splurge a little once a in while, whether it’s for another person or herself. I simply hope everyone gets a chance to do a little thinking and a little thanking this holiday season. Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays, Gema Salgado Cruz Editor-In-Chief of Print

The world was rocked to its core as the news of attacks against Paris, France cried out across the Earth. The attacks were ignited by a well known terrorist group called ISIS. Who exactly is ISIS? ISIS stands for Islamic State in Iraq and Syria. According to CNN News, ISIS is a radical anti-western militant terrorist group that is devoted to establishing an independent Islamic state in the Middle East, much like the infamous al Qaeda group. “ISIS is scary,” social studies teacher Mr. Sundermeier states, “They present a scary problem. They’re a problem that the western world needs to address.” When Paris was attacked, over 120 innocent people died, as well as other ISIS members such as Hasna Aitboulahcen-- a young woman who was a suicide bomber in the terrorist group. “When I heard of the attacks, I thought of them as France’s 9/11. I think we need to respond to the attacks the same way we responded to the 9/11 attacks,” Says Cleo Organ, junior. According to American Progress, an online website dedicated to America’s history, on Sept. 11, 2001 when the Twin Towers in New York City were brutally attacked by al Qaeda, the United States responded by ordering a Navy SEAL raid. The attack killed the head al Qaeda leader, Osama bin Laden and dozens of other senior leaders. This attack happened May 2, 2011-- ten years after 9/11. President Obama and French President Hollande say they will expand attacks against ISIS in Syria and Iraq. According to NPR, Hollande and Obama discussed building a more robust international coalition to combat ISIS. The two leaders are trying to get the big international players, mainly Russia and Germany, on the same page as them. “We could run into a big problem with this,” Organ says. Russia continues to fund Syria’s leader, Bashar al-Assad.”Al- Assad is the one killing his Syrian people as they try to protest his government. According to BBC News, 250,000 Syrians are dead, while 11 million of them have been forced from their homes as those for al Assad battle those who are not. “It’s like they’re paying him to kill his people who want change.” Organ states with a frown. Due to the brutalities happening in Syria, thousands of Syrian refugees are making their way over to the United States seeking safety. “I believe that both sides, diplomatic vs being protective of the country, are understandable,” student Mark Thome’ Snyder, a future USAF Diagnostic Imaging Technician, tells the Vibe,

“We either take the risk by bringing them in (Refugees who could possibly be siding with ISIS), or leave thousands of innocent people with nowhere safe to go. In my opinion, children of 6-7 years and below should be allowed without a problem. Others should have some sort of background check done on them. I say this because the mastermind behind the Paris attacks was a Syrian ‘refugee’ who was brought into France. I think we should just monitor the people, and the government can decide how to deal with those who are sketchy.” With thousands of refugees seeking safety, and a deadly terrorist group threatening the country, the United States currently has its hands full. In recent news, a deadly shooting has happened in San Bernardino, California. This attack, was in fact, an act of terror against the United States. According to CNN News, there was evidence of careful planning of the killings found in the couple’s (Tashfeen Malik, Syed Rizwan Farook) home. The news source says that the shooting may have been inspired by ISIS, but so far there is no final indication that ISIS directed or ordered the attack. ISIS has not claimed responsibility of the attack, but the terrorist group has hailed the couple, and described them as “supporters” of them. Tashfeen Malik publicly announced her loyalty to ISIS on her Facebook page, only for Facebook to take it down due to violation of community standards. Also courtesy of CNN News, President Obama has claimed that these shootings, in his eyes, are an act of terrorism. “Here’s what I want you to know,” the president said, “The threat from terrorism is real, but we will overcome it. We will destroy ISIL/ISIS and any other organization that tries to harm us.” What Obama is focusing on now, is letting the people know that this situation, and any other terrorist situations, will be stopped. “We will prevail,” Obama states, “by being strong and smart, resilient and relentless.” Emma Peerenboom Arts and Entertainment Editor Abdelham Abaaoud, the mastermind behind the Paris attacks. Andrew Blumenschein:

Andrew Blumenschein, perhaps better known as “Blumey,” is admired by practically every student and teacher at MHS. His charm and charisma make him stand out in a crowd, his skills on the football field capture the attention of players, coaches and fans, and his powerful stage presence has made him one of our Show Choir’s most adored performers. Even outside of Show Choir and football, Blumenschein is extremely involved. He has a multitude of interests and participates in Mock Trial, Young Conservatives, Young Liberals, Student Council, Powerlifting and musicals. Blumenschein is also a co-founder and the president of Civics Club. Jack Essig, the other member of Civics Club and Blumenschein’s football teammate describes his friend as a leader whom everyone looks up to. “Whenever the team is down he looks at himself first to make corrections before telling others what they did wrong,” Essig states. Blumenschein is an inspiration to his entire high school, and will continue to inspire others with all that he does in the future. What word best describes you? What is your goal this year? Leader In The Arts

Always having fun and enjoying her last year at MHS, this month’s featured senior, Sammy Williams, is dancing and singing her way through life. Through her light-hearted spirit and caring nature, Williams has found her passion. Planning to move to Los Angeles after high school to continue her dance career, she continues to work hard to reach her dream. How long have you been dancing? This year will be my 15 year. What style of dances have you done throughout your dance career? Jazz, tap, ballet, contemporary, lyrical, modern, clog, hip-hop, musical theater, pointe. What style do you consider yourself the best at? I never consider myself as a master in any of them because there is always room for improvement. I would say I’m pretty solid in hip-hop because I’m just a strong dancer and that helps. Jazz, the way I dance is more up beat and I can put myself in a character really easily. What style is your favorite? Lyrical and contemporary. What kind of artist are you? Visual Movement artist. What does art mean to you? A way to express yourself, in my case through your body. Would you consider dancing art too? why? Yes, because through dance you can express so many different things. Art is usually visually pleasing to the eye. A really good artist makes you think and engages you and I think dance does the same.

Sammy Williams What are you involved in inside and outside of school? MHS Show Choir, symphonic choir, I dance, teach, and choreograph at ISDC. I also choreograph for the BMS Mini Swingers and 4-H.

What studio are you involved in? In Step Dance Center. How many hours do you spend at the dance studio in a week? It varies throughout the season, but I would say roughly eight hours. Do you like singing or dancing better? Dancing.

What do you plan to do after high school? After high school I’m moving to L.A. to start auditioning and take classes at Millennium Dance Complex. Through Millennium I will attend their certificate program, which will allow me to train there for however long I decide to receive a certificate saying that I trained there with them. With that I can show other studios and at auditions. I’m getting an agent and I already have a manager out there. When did you know this is what you wanted to do for the rest of your life? I knew I always wanted to dance ever since I was little. Dance is really the only thing I know and my only passion.

Who has inspired you throughout the years? Through attending Showstopper dance conventions I met this girl Blue in 2009. She was the first dancer that I really noticed. Her studio got washed away in Hurricane Katrina, so she had to teach herself to dance and find ways to dance and make herself happy in a place that just wasn’t. Watching her dance you can really see that in her emotions. It makes you feel for her.

What is your biggest goal/aspiration? I’ve always wanted to do the commercial side of dance which is like the music videos and commercials and yours with singers. I would love to go on a tour with a famous artist. It would be so cool to have Beyonce as my boss.

Who do you look up to in the dance world? Ricky Ubeda, he was 18 when he won So You Think You Can Dance. Just to think how much he has done in such a short amount of time and how big of an impact he’s made is crazy to me.

RECORD-BREAKING TEMPERATURES CALL FOR GLOBAL WARMING AWARENESS With conferences about global climate in Paris and recordbreaking temperatures being announced, the entire world seems to be focused on global warming. According to CNN, this past October was the warmest on record of the NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration); in addition, 70 percent of the Earth’s warmest months occurred this year. On Nov. 30, the United Na-

tions as well as other countries, including the two highest carbon-emitting countries: the United States and China, met in Le Bourget, France to negotiate an international carbon emission agreement. One of the greatest issues presented at the conference is the unwillingness of countries to agree to anything legally binding. However, President Barack Obama is pushing for exactly that, as well as having periodic reviews

to keep up with scientific advances to prevent global warming, according to USA Today. Previous climate conferences failed for that reason. Despite some reluctance Obama says, “I’m convinced that we’re going to get big things done [here].” Carbon emissions are not the only reason for the toasty weather of the last few months. According to the Washington Post, Major El Niño events release great amounts of heat into the Earth’s atmosphere, and this year’s El Niño has been one of the powerful yet, hence the unusually warm temperatures in winter. Mrs. Krofft, biology teacher, claims,

“What we’re dealing with right now, our weather patterns, they’re all linked to a major El Niño event.” Whether it be natural weather patterns or El Niño striking again, it’s clear the Earth is increasingly warmer. Unless everyone starts doing their part in protecting humanity’s only home, the home that belongs to every other creature on the planet, it seems like people might have to keep their winter clothing packed away for a little longer. Researchers Develop an Artificial Kidney; Early Stages K

idney dialysis can cause severe dietary restrictions, breathing problems and high blood pressure. People on dialysis must be hooked up to a machine at a hospital or clinic every few days. “The dialysis machine does do some of what healthy kidneys do but it can’t do all of it. Healthy kidneys regulate blood pressure, remove toxins from the blood as well as extra water,”

says Amber Murphy, nurse at Davita Meadowhawk Dialysis. Dialysis may prolong life by a little, however that does not necessarily mean it will improve one’s quality of life. “There are two patients that are still here from when I started here 13 years ago. One of them has been on dialysis since he was 18 in 1979,” Murphy says. Patients spend a lot of their time at a clinic or hospital.

“The patients typically go three times a week for four hours per treatment.” Healthy kidneys work consistently. Anything we put into our mouths our body filters out. Most of Murphy’s patients no longer urinate. This is because their kidneys don’t function. Typically they have a very strict fluid intake. Murphy says, “If they miss a treat-

Sunday Times ment or aren’t compliant with their fluid restrictions, they can get really sick or even die.” Too much or too little fluid can cause severe swelling and congestive heart failure. Most people who enjoy sweets such as ice cream or cheesecake don’t give a second thought when they eat it. However, dialysis patients cannot regularly indulge in these treats. Other foods that are highly not recommended are mashed potatoes, bananas and orange juice. “Normally, these foods would be off-limits because they can lead to a dangerous buildup of potassium and phosphorus between dialysis

sessions,” according to CNN. In the near future patients may be dialysis free. Could an artificial kidney be the next big thing? Possibly. “If the researchers continue to receive funding to conduct clinical trials and further develop the technology, Gura estimates that WAK devices could be available for patients in two years,” according to CNN. Editorial: Will Golden State Repeat Another Championship? After a great season by the Golden State Warriors, many people expect them to repeat yet another winning season as they had the best record going 67-15 and bring home another NBA championship. The Warriors have one of the most high powered offenses in league history, with the offensive juggernaut being led by a man whose deadly from halfcourt, the reigning MVP, Stephen Curry. They have started the season at 21-0 the greatest start in history by any ever NBA team has accomplished throughout history and slowly inching towards the 33 game win streak set by Jerry West’s Lakers that in 2013, Lebron James led the team almost eclipsed yet falls short at short at 27. This brings up the only reason the Warriors wouldn't repeat: The King. Last year the Finals included the Cavaliers and Warriors and while the Warriors won, there was speculation over if they were truly the better team because a few Cavaliers players were in the hospital with injuries causing Lebron James to push himself to exhaustion needing IVs. The Cavs had a lead in the series at one point but ended up losing and the Warriors in the final games had no problem winning. Right now the Warriors look to be the most healthy team in the NBA tearing apart a western conference that is considered a challenge and so far lead by Stephen Curry's numbers outdo Michael Jordan's 95-96 squad widely regarded as the greatest in NBA history winning back to back championships. So it would state the case that out of any team the Warriors

have the best shot at winning it, but as so many times it happens in sports will they be able to capitalize on their greatness or fall short ? Stephen Curry looks as if he is a magician he scores. Fellow splash brother Klay Thompson put up 37 points in one quarter setting the NBA record. Stephen Curry is currently on track to win MVP as well as MIP, most improved player as a result of the increase of offensive output. Even more concerning for other teams is the Warriors don’t even have their head coach Steve Kerr. Instead, they have Luke Walton at the helm. One would only imagine that they will be at full force upon his return. With the Warriors beginning there 201516 season off to a great start holding a better record than runner ups of the last years finals, it is in most thinking that the warriors offensive set will carry them beyond another NBA title. But, with a healthy Cavs team, there's no telling what battle it will be to beat one another. Kameron Young Reporter
