MISSION SENIORS A monthly guide to events, resources and services for Mission Seniors

June 2013

Thank you, Mission The Mission Seniors Advisory Committee wishes to offer our most sincere thanks to those local seniors organizations, senior residences, bus transportation people and all of the volunteers who made Seniors Week (May 31-June 8) a success. Helping others can improve your health. Consider volunteering in the community, like being a mentor for children, or creating uplifting rituals, such as going for walks around the neighbourhood.

Both the District of Mission and the Mission Community Foundation have been most gracious in their support that has helped various events throughout the community for the celebration of seniors. Our biggest thanks go to you, Mission seniors, in your support of the week’s events and what you have done for your community all of the years past. Sincerely, Bryan Fawcette, Chair, Mission Seniors Advisory Committee, and Danny Plecas, Chair, Seniors Week Committee

Spirit of helping others

C

arry the spirit of helping others. Your blood pressure and the rest of your health may depend on it. Research shows that older people who feel happy and hopeful, have a sense of selfworth and enjoy life (all feelings that can come from helping people) and have lower blood pressure compared with their more pessimistic peers. Why? Because good feelings can help reduce the effects of

stress and prevent highblood pressure (plus a cascade of other maladies). If you weren’t born with a glass half-full outlook, you can cultivate one — even when the job market, your bank account and maybe even your spirits are a little bit (or a lot) down. Helping others is just one way. Try these suggestions: • Say thanks. Once a week, think of someone who has had an effect

on your life — big or small — and write him or her, a note of gratitude. It not only makes the person feel connected and healthy, but some research shows that 15 minutes of daily gratitude can dramatically decrease stress hormones in your body, too. • Create rituals. One of the reasons why religious services or music can be so uplifting is that the weekly rituals reinforce a healthy sense of

•••

community (and, interestingly, the more connected we feel, the higher our degree of generosity and compassion). Rituals don’t need to be religious to be effective. You might be uplifted by nature walks with a group in your neighbourhood or by a nightly dinner-time routine where everyone in your family shares something great that happened to them that day.

Ombudsperson Kim Carter speaks during Seniors Week On Friday, May 31 the start of Mission Seniors’ Week, Kim Carter, the BC Ombudsperson gave a presentation at the Mission Seniors Activity Centre. Together with the executive director of Intake and Systemic Investigations, Bruce Ronayne, they explained the role of the Office of the Ombudsperson in ensuring seniors are treated fairly in British Columbia. They have jurisdiction over 2,500 provincial public authorities, receive more than 8,000 inquiries and complaints a year and have over 2,000 files investigated. The ombudsperson role for specific complaints is to generally oversee the administrative actions of government authorities with a view of upholding the democratic principles of openness, transparency

and accountability. Was the person treated in a fair and reasonable manner? Were the rules followed? Are the rules fair and reasonable? Are there gaps or areas for improved service delivery? Carter’s February 2012 report highlighted: • The Best of Care: Getting It Right for Seniors in British Columbia. • Investigation of home and community care issues, home support, assisted living and residential care including adequacy of information; access to services; standards of care; complaint processes; monitoring and enforcement; and facility closures. Seniors can make individual complaints to the Ombudsperson Office by calling 1-800-567-3247, or visit www.bcombudsperson.ca.

Seniors week successes A successful Seniors’ Week started May 31 with a visit and presentation by the BC Ombudsperson, Kim Carter, who explained what her office can do for seniors. A “Royal Tea” on Saturday presented by Lifetime Learning and was well attended, as it is every year. The next day, there was a lunch at the Seniors Centre provided by the Cedarbrooke Chateau, featuring Steve Lau “The Hong Kong Cowboy,” who sang some country tunes and popular rock oldies. On Monday, June 3, the popular Ice Cream Social, hosted by Karen Reed at Carrington House, was a great success. On Tuesday, there was an open house at the Mission Lawn Bowling club which drew a few new people who tried out their skills on the bowling greens, and the

matinee at SilverCity, which showed the movie The Quartet. Entry was by donation which went to support the Starlight Foundation with a match of the funds by MCSS. There was an open house at the Cedars on Wednesday, hosted by Tricia Schweers, and their talented chef. The band Sweet Water played and sang for a large audience and the patrons danced away the afternoon on Thursday at the Mission Seniors Activity Centre. There was a huge turnout for the great barbecue Friday hosted by the Old Age Pensioners Organization. The hamburgers were awesome. The week wrapped up with the annual Pancake Breakfast put on by the Mission Legion on Saturday morning.

Loneliness and the community Think about volunteering, exercising or joining a dance club to stay active. Persistent loneliness is associated with high-blood pressure, obesity, sleep dysfunction, depression, compromised immunity and Alzheimer’s disease. Stress caused by loneliness may even increase your risk of cancer. So, seek to revitalize friendships and family relationships and choose friends carefully. Learning is a lifelong adventure and an opportunity to expand your social network. If you suspect someone you know is lonely — reach out! Similarly, if you have been feeling sad or anxious for weeks on end, stressful about financial or family relationships, or if you aren’t sleeping and eating well, or if you are avoiding people, you may be depressed. Don’t go it alone — seek help! Growing older can mean dealing

with many changes. Physical pain and loss of mobility can make it hard to get out. Being on your own or caring for someone can be lonely. Loneliness is stressful. Some rely on alcohol or medications to reduce feelings of fear or anxiety, which often leaves individuals more isolated. Maybe something positive like a bus ad, “We love our Seniors’” may help get a message across to society. Routinely assess your community. How age-friendly is your

neighbourhood and is a formal or informal age-friendly program available? Do your elected politicians lead from an informed, empathetic and compassionate role, or are they indifferent and making excuses for inaction more the order of the day? Do seniors’ have a dedicated facility to gather and on a year round 24/7 availability, as loneliness doesn’t take time off evenings, weekends or holiday seasons. Indeed, it often is exacerbated when comradeship is denied. Some associations, seniors activity centres or gathering places may be perceived too “cliquish” and

many may not feel comfortable attending. Some simple steps like recognizing a 55-year-old or 75-year-old may have different interests can help create a welcoming environment. Make sure the person who answers the phone is friendly, polite, patient and easy to understand; have a pleasant person available to meet and greet new people and to welcome people back when they have been absent. Misison’s newest seniors housing project, Cedar Valley Manor, is now being built The Mission Association for Seniors Housing (MASH) is pleased to announce Cedar Valley Manor, the newest and most innovative housing option for people 55 and older in Mission, is finally under construction. Completion is scheduled for early fall 2014! MASH would like to extend its sincerest thanks to Envision Financial, which has generously provided the financing necessary to turn this dream of so many into a reality. The groundbreaking and sod

turning for the start of construction began with shovels hitting turf on Saturday, June 15. In attendance were Member of Parliament Randy Kamp, members of the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia Marc Dalton and Simon Gibson, and Mission Mayor Ted Adlem. Also in attendance were many of Mission’s

residents who have put in countless hours of hard work to make this project a reality, and the early purchasers of the project, whose faith kept the dream alive. Cedar Valley Manor offers a new, simple and secure way for people 55 and over to age in the community they call home,

protected from the real estate market and without the hassles of home maintenance and yard work. Additionally, the construction of the project over the next year provides numerous construction jobs in the local community, and the builder, Andreas Development, is committed to hiring as many local trades people as possible. The MASH board of directors, and the whole project team, would like to extend their most sincere thanks to the citizens of Mission for supporting this project and for recognizing the need for a project like Cedar Valley Manor, which will be an asset for the community in the years to come. From everyone working on Cedar Valley Manor, thank you. We look forward to updating you on this exciting project as the building begins to take form over the coming months.
