Business Excellence Awards celebrated in style

O

n June 8, the Business Excellence Awards celebrated businesses and organizations that go above and beyond in Mission. Presented by RDM Lawyers LLP, the awards were held at Silverdale Community Centre as a nostalgic nod to the Chamber’s 120th celebrations. Those in attendance enjoyed the glance back at the growth of Mission and the strength of today’s business community. Chamber President Sean Melia noted in his opening remarks the importance of having a municipal council that supports the business community. He addressed the opportunity to provide an economic garden in which local business can prosper and the Chamber’s role as a resource and support for its members. “Wouldn’t we all want to work 10 minutes from home rather than an hour commute?” Melia asked the audience. After inspiring the crowd, master of ceremonies Tanya Fletcher, afternoon anchor of News 1130, led the program through to its successful conclusion. Those nominated and the award recipients are: Local Focus Awarded to Save On Foods Mission Springs Brewing Embers BBQ House Walker Park Media

The final presentation of the night was the President’s Award. This award is bestowed on a business or business leader who tirelessly supports and contributes to the development of Mission. Often unsung, these businesses and leaders do their work not for recognition but for the betterment of all. Unlike the other awards, the President’s Award is nominated by the board of directors of the Chamber of Commerce and does not go through a judging process.

This year’s recipient was Ron Leger, RJ Leger CGA Ltd. Recognized for his tireless fundraising efforts for St. Joseph’s Food Bank building, where he has raised more than $535,000; Ron is a Rotarian that definitely lives service over self. He works tirelessly supporting and volunteering on many community organizations boards such as the Optimist Club, Historical Society, and Kinsmen Club. An accountant in Mission for 25 years, Ron often provides his services as a financial agent for those seeking to make a difference politically, at no cost. In 2012, Ron received the Queen’s Jubilee Award not only in recognition of work here but also for constructing a hospital in Malawi. A standing ovation met Ron's presentation with many in the audience having had the pleasure of working alongside him and acknowledging his selfless work. During an intermission, the Chamber unveiled a short video that has been created highlighting its work and the growing business community over the last 120 years. The full video will be posted on the Chamber’s YouTube Channel later this month. Many noted that this year’s gala was an exceptional event that offered great opportunities to do business and learn about the success that occurs daily in Mission.

hile records of the early days of the Chamber are few, I think it is important to recognize that there are many businesses and community groups that have roots that go back to the inaugural times of the Chamber. There are many aspects that go into creating a healthy and attractive business environment in our community. One is the desire of the local administration to put in place programs and practices that seek to attract and encourage business. We are fortunate that council is taking action to talk the talk and walk the walk. Council works to support the efforts of the Chamber through a strong partnership which is focused on creating opportunities for economic growth and development while streamlining processes. I have seen this partnership strengthen and grow in the nine or so years I have been on the Chamber board and I expect it will continue to be a key partnership that develops well into the future. It signals an understanding of the need to enhance business opportunities here in Mission for the benefit of the residents of Mission. Who wouldn’t like to go to work 10 minutes from home versus 60 minutes or more each way by car or train? The desire for Economic Development in Mission has never been more focused than it is now.

tarting June 15, the Mission Chamber will be asking you to pledge to Shop Local, Spend Local, Eat Local and Enjoy Local. And in doing this you support the Mission businesses that support you and your community. In partnership with the District of Mission Economic Development Office and The Mission Record, the Chamber has launched shoplocalmission.com where you can commit to driving the local economy and supporting your neighbours. By pledging, you publicly declare your intention to contribute to the support of Mission. It costs nothing and your name will be posted on the pledge wall. Continuing the conversation started with the Pay It Forward Campaign last winter; when $1 is spent in Mission it circulates seven times in the commu-

nity. It pays the wages of the cashier who rents from your neighbour, who contributes to your children’s school, that purchases signs from a local printer, who pays the wages of his staff while they pick up litter for Adopt-a-Block, and around it goes. None of this happens when we shop far from home. Keeping those dollars circulating in Mission helps build our community. It gives opportunities for our children to get their first job, it supports our local community organizations and schools and you get to enjoy what Mission has to offer. Go online and make the pledge. Share it through your social media links and challenge your friends and neighbours to make the pledge. Publicly declare that you support Mission! Go to shoplocalmission.com!

New to Mission Save On Foods, but deep roots in the community

J

im Shaw has been manager of Save On Foods in Mission for only five months, but he has a lifetime of history here. Name any community pioneer and he can tell you a story. Shaw’s parents settled here in 1946; in 1958, he was born at the old Mission hospital. Claire Clemo was his Grade 5 teacher. His father, Ed Shaw, was a well-known Mission dentist. With that kind of community connection, Shaw is constantly building rapport with both his Save On team of 100 and

his 9,000+ customers. One of the things setting Save On Foods in Mission apart from other grocerystyle stores is that “our focus and passion is groceries. “I am most proud of the culture of customer service the team members have developed in this Mission store over the years,” he said. “We want to deliver Always Customer First Service, and we strive for that every day.” Shaw knows (or has met) all but five of the store managers for the Overwaitea Food Group in Mission

since 1927: Bill Beetlestone, George Cleal, Ed Klassen, Gery Heppell, John Kabatoff, Ron Klassen, Ron Ballard, Rod Christianson, Ken Sharp, Jim Hills and Spencer Jack, just to name a few. He has been with Overwaitea Food Group for 35 years and in the grocery business since 1974. “It’s in my blood.” “With a new collective agreement, a new president and a strong vision to make our stores world-class, I am proud to offer our services in Mission,” said Shaw, who

is working hard to maintain a marriage of symbiotic relationships between Save On and Mission’s service clubs, schools, the Mission Regional Chamber of Commerce and other community groups. “Support from these community groups gives us the strength to give back in a way they have come to appreciate,” he said. “This Save On store at the Junction Mall opened 15 years ago; it’s not new to Mission and neither am I. Come say hi.”

his year’s Mission Regional Chamber of Commerce Business Bursary was awarded to Courtney Formosa by the Mission Community Foundation. Courtney was raised in Mission and is graduating from Heritage Park Secondary School, where she says the staff and students have all been very supportive. An avid basketball fan, Courtney plays for the school team and also coaches and referees, giving her the opportunity to travel to the U.S. a number of times to compete. She is excited to start her bachelor of commerce program at the University of Victoria in the fall; she is pursuing an education in financial management and international business. Her goal is to land opportunities that will allow her to work and travel in Europe. Currently working in McDonalds to save for her education, Courtney also plans to spend some time volunteering with international

120 YEARS STRONG

Supporting business for 120 years T

he Mission Regional Chamber of Commerce has always supported, advised and advocated for business in the area, but in its more recent years has also celebrated and recognized local business. Through the 1970s various awards and presentation evenings were introduced including the Citizen of the Year Award, given to a distinguished and deserving citizen of the district. By 1991 the ceremony was broadened to include honouring local business and a sportsman of the year. Lifetime achievement was added in 1992 to honour those who devoted a lifetime of service and commitment to the community. Throughout the years the style of event has changed, from Awards to President’s Balls, giving this dedicated and hard-working group of business people the opportunity to kick up their heels and come together for an evening of celebration. The Business Excellence Awards now focuses on the business community; recognizing them for their dedication, innovation and entrepreneurial spirit. The community nominates and every year there continues to be a larger number of nominations submitted, reflecting the high standards that the business community achieves. This year, to reflect the Chamber’s history, the Business Excellence Awards was celebrated at Silverdale Hall June 8 as a return to its roots. With A chamber of commerce President's Ball was held in 1980 in Mission. old school charm, the event again applauded those who excel.
