MISSION SENIORS A monthly guide to events, resources and services for Mission Seniors

Mission Record

Proposed changes to Mission’s firearms discharge bylaw were soundly criticized by a large crowd of mostly hunters June 19. The District of Mission council is contemplating banning all shooting throughout the municipality, except at the Mission and District Rod and Gun Club (MDRGC). “The primary issue for this council is the problems encountered in the interpretive forest area, said Mayor Ted Adlem in an earlier interview with The Record. “We’re dealing with an enormous cost for policing. The interpretive forest is located on the west side of Stave Lake, near the Zajac Ranch for Children, and close to the proposed Tim Hortons Children’s Foundation camp and

Sayres Lake campground. Adlem said many people will not go into that region because of the number of individuals shooting guns and the associated litter left behind. The hunters who spoke said they are not the ones causing the problems, and this proposed bylaw change would not solve the trouble. “I grew up here and I grew up hunting, said Bill Cameron. “We don’t do what’s going on up there. Illegal shooting is the problem. [This amendment] is not going to stop illegal shooting. He suggested the fine for littering be increased to $5,000 and that this proposal is punishing hunters and those families who count that activity as part of their culture, a See REPORT Page 5

The Mission Seniors Advisory Committee wishes to offer our most sincere thanks to those local seniors organizations, senior residences, bus transportation people and all of the volunteers who made Seniors Week (May 31-June 8) a success. Helping others can improve your health. Consider volunteering in the community, like being a mentor for children, or creating uplifting rituals, such as going for walks around the neighbourhood.

Both the District of Mission and the Mission Community Foundation have been most gracious in their support that has helped various events throughout the community for the celebration of seniors. Our biggest thanks go to you, Mission seniors, in your support of the week’s events and what you have done for your community all of the years past.

Spirit of helping others

C

arry the spirit of helping others. Your blood pressure and the rest of your health may depend on it. Research shows that older people who feel happy and hopeful, have a sense of selfworth and enjoy life (all feelings that can come from helping people) and have lower blood pressure compared with their more pessimistic peers. Why? Because good feelings can help reduce the effects of

stress and prevent highblood pressure (plus a cascade of other maladies). If you weren’t born with a glass half-full outlook, you can cultivate one — even when the job market, your bank account and maybe even your spirits are a little bit (or a lot) down. Helping others is just one way. Try these suggestions: • Say thanks. Once a week, think of someone who has had an effect

on your life — big or small — and write him or her, a note of gratitude. It not only makes the person feel connected and healthy, but some research shows that 15 minutes of daily gratitude can dramatically decrease stress hormones in your body, too. • Create rituals. One of the reasons why religious services or music can be so uplifting is that the weekly rituals reinforce a healthy sense of

community (and, interestingly, the more connected we feel, the higher our degree of generosity and compassion). Rituals don’t need to be religious to be effective. You might be uplifted by nature walks with a group in your neighbourhood or by a nightly dinner-time routine where everyone in your family shares something great that happened to them that day. — Submitted by MCSS

Pirates in the park BY CAROL AUN Mission Record

Fraser River Heritage Park was filled with young pirates and lots of treasure at the annual Fraser Valley Children’s Festival on Sunday. More and more people dress up for the event every year, said Nancy Arcand, executive director for Mission Arts Council (MAC) which has organized the fair for 17 years. “Lots of kids and adults dress up and this year 99 per cent of our vendors dressed up too.” From magicians to entertainment with a live parrot, there was something for everyone to enjoy. The Abbotsford Heat hockey team was there as was a dairy trailer, giving children a chance to learn how to milk a cow. “Kids were everywhere,” said Arcand, noting Opening Nite Theatre’s Camille Knight was busy all day face painting and a number of organizations ran out of supplies and had to get more, including Camp Luther which was making balloon swords for kids. Festival attendees also had a chance to make fairy wreaths from an assortment of silk flowers that were donated to MAC. Pirates also captured Mission Mayor Ted Adlem and made him walk the plank after promising to keep the arts alive in Mission. “He was a great sport,” said Arcand. The Children’s Festival is one of the main fundraisers for the MAC. For more information about MAC call 604-826-0029 or visit www. missionartscouncil.ca.

sentiment expressed by several speakers out of the crowd of about 150 people. First Avenue business owner Dave Kunstler, who runs High Caliber Services Corp., said he moved to Mission six years ago for the outdoor culture. He said he has collected more than 700 signatures from people opposed to the suggested bylaw change. “Hunters are not the problem,â€? he said. “Allow shooters and hunters a place to shoot.â€? Kunstler also noted many businesses in Mission derive income from firearms enthusiasts coming through the district as they purchase gas, food and ammunition. “This will be lost of the ban goes ahead.â€? Some of the speakers agreed that discharging a firearm should not be permitted near Zajac and Tim Hortons camps, but requested council refrain from a complete ban. MDRGC’s communications director Ron Tarnawski said the club would like some areas kept open for hunting. “We recognize there are enforcement issues in one of the rural areas and that a total ban may have an effect on this issue, however, whatever rules are in place, they too will need enforcement,â€? he said. “If this is one of the reasons why a total ban approach is being considered, then the result is a wholesale loss of a recreational opportunity in the District of Mission because of the actions of a few individuals.â€? Respect wildlife

A video posted to YouTube of a bear entering a pickup truck by unlatching the doors might be funny for viewers safely ensconced in their concrete and glass condos, but encounters with wildlife in the city rarely end well. For the animals. It seems every spring there are sightings of bears in urban neighbourhoods ambling through backyards and down alleys tipping over garbage cans, pawing at bird feeders. Recently, a deer somehow managed to wander through the busy streets of New Westminster for hours before conservation officers were finally notified. Sadly the otherwise healthy and robust deer didn’t survive the shot from a tranquilizer gun. Ungulates like deer don’t react well to tranquilizing drugs, said Dave Cox of the Conservation Officer Service. The stress of dodging traffic, barking dogs and curious humans probably didn’t help. One of the great allures of living in B.C. is the vast natural wilderness that begins right in our backyard. It’s easy to be at a grocery store in the morning and then having a picnic in the middle of a first- or second-growth forest, surrounded by mountains and trees for as far as the eye can see in the afternoon. Odds are there’s creatures amongst those trees. And sometimes they wander out of those woods and into our streets. At first blush it may seem an infringement on our space, but we have to remember their ancestors were here long before us. We’re encroaching on territories and behaviours bred into them for thousands of years. We need to respect their coexistence with us. - Black Press

Cabinet rookies handed hot files T here are nine new faces in Premier Christy Clark’s cabinet, seven of them elected to the B.C. legislature for the first time on May 14. They have been handed some of the hottest problems, and Clark’s marching orders in “mandate letters” for each ministry. Take Amrik Virk, the former RCMP inspector from Surrey who’s suddenly in charge of advanced education. His mandate includes: “Review the student loan program to make recommendations for improvement to ensure the loan program is meeting the needs of today’s students.” Virk must also set targets to “match the skills we need with the skills we are graduating” and require postsecondary schools to “ensure student seats are being filled.” B.C. can’t afford to keep cranking out university grads with $50,000 in debt and no job prospects in a system that’s subsidized 65 per cent. Virk will be working closely with Education Minister Peter Fassbender, who must “ensure seamless transitions”

Q

from high school to the workforce for post-secondary trades and apprenticeships. In his spare time, Fassbender is to overhaul the school district bargaining agency and achieve a 10year peace with the teachers’ union. Justice Minister Suzanne Anton has worked as a Crown prosecutor, so she’ll have some insight into the system that still grapples with Stanley Cup rioters from two summers ago. Her orders are to get traffic tickets and other administrative penalties To out of the courts, keep working on integrating police fiefdoms and generally treat the constipation that afflicts law enforcement today. Oh, and get that new Okanagan prison built, to relieve a system that has inmates living in tents. And examine whether to spin off the Liquor Distribution Branch into a Crown corporation, a possible prelude to selling it.

Transportation Minister Todd Stone’s first test was a grilling by the Vancouver media. Now he has to impose the ferry route reductions that have been worked on by two previous ministers, and push Metro Vancouver through a referendum on ways to fund its own transit. If more tolls or taxes are going to be implemented, now is the time. Coralee Oakes has made a political leap from Quesnel city hall to the Ministry of Community, Sport and Cultural Development. One of her key tasks is to invent a framem work for a “rural dividend” from liquefied natural gas development in northwestern B.C. Oakes has to figure out how to “better provide provincial support” to sport and cultural organizations, but do it with no new money. All ministers have strict instructions to balance their lean budgets and take part in the latest “core review” to identify government functions

that can be sold, delegated or shut down. New Minister of International Trade Richmond’s Teresa Wat has to find a way to continue the growth of lumber and other exports to China, India and elsewhere on the Pacific Rim. On top of that, the alwaysdelicate softwood lumber agreement with the U.S. expires in three years. The last major eruption on that front was in 2009, when B.C. cut stumpage rates for remote coastal areas to give communities much-needed employment. The Americans were livid, just as they were with our beetle-kill harvesting efforts. And of course, the U.S.-directed environmental movement continues to target Canadian industries. Third-term MLA John Rustad gets aboriginal relations, with specific instructions to deal with gas and perhaps oil pipelines through his Nechako Lakes constituency. YOUR VIEWS

NAFTA a mistake for Canada Editor, The Record: No apologies from me for the cynicism about Canada Day and all the flag waving and firework displays. Not that those aren’t fun things to do, because they are. It’s right that we should celebrate our country. What’s not right is losing our independence on a scale that would make even the Fathers of Confederation question why they bothered forging a country. I’m a Canadian nationalist when it comes to economic and commercial areas for the simple reason that a country that loses control of the economic decisions within its

borders loses both the right and the power to protect itself and to make those decisions which benefit us, rather than corporate boardrooms in the U.S. and elsewhere. Our fate was sealed the moment former Prime Minister Brian Mulroney signed the North American Free Trade Agreement with former U.S. President Ronald Reagan who had become a follower of libertarian Ayn Rand who waged war on the very concept of the common good. From that act of treachery, our democracy was hobbled, and the words in our anthem about being the “true North, strong and free

became meaningless rhetoric that can only be uttered in the past tense. Either we rally to the defence of our country’s future — even if that means short-term pain — or we surrender to reality and stop pretending that we’re anything but a branch plant of the new economic order. We are our own worst enemy. We’re letting the country slip through our fingers, but never mind — we can wave flags and sing the new version of O Canada: What a bloody mess we have made of thee. Robert T. Rock Mission

nity. Someone came up beside me and said she collapsed on the sidewalk only five minutes earlier. After what seemed to be a long while, the lady looked to be finally breathing on her own again. A second ambulance had already arrived by this time and she was then taken away. I may have been there for around 10 minutes. Emergency services did an amazing job, yet

no one clapped at the end like you may see at sporting events or anything like that. They just did what they’ve been trained to do and then hurried her off to the hospital. I felt they did a really great job that day and I thought someone should say thank you. Thank you for being there and doing what you did. You’re much appreciated in our community. Abbotsford man faces charges following robbery at the CIBC A 29-year-old Abbotsford man has been arrested in connection with an armed robbery at the Mission Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce Monday. A lone male robbed the First Avenue CIBC shortly after 11 a.m. June 24, making off with an undisclosed amount of cash. According to Mission RCMP Staff Sgt. Rob Dickson, the male produced a handgun, and was wearing a dark grey hoodie with no logo, and black sweat pants. He entered and exited the bank from the alley entrance, said Dickson. No

injuries were reported. Abbotsford Police Department arrested Jeffery Russell around midnight June 25 on an unrelated outstanding warrant. Mission RCMP’s Sgt. Shaun Wright said a “significant portion of the stolen cash was recovered at the time of Russell’s arrest” but the handgun was not located. Crown counsel has approved charges of robbery and using an imitation firearm during the commission of an offence relating to this incident, said Wright.

Air and water can get into the A/C system which can reduce the efficiency of the system and can also lead to corrosion or fungus, mould and bacterial growth that is blown into the passenger area.

Are you currently getting this for your oil & filter changes? INCLUDES:

THIS IS WHAT WE CAN DO... To complete the HVAC service a technician will clean out the air conditioning lines, evaporator and ventilator and then kill any bacteria mould or fungi. Then deodorize the entire A/C system and the vehicles interior. Finally, after a complete inspection for leaks and wear, the technician will measure and replenish the oil in the compressor. The air inside your vehicle will be much cleaner and 4 to 5 degrees cooler, thanks to increased efficiency.

PUTTERING AND OTHER WAYS TO SAVOR LIFE

Hatzic Middle/Secondary Principal: Shirley Gibson Vice-Principal Grad Program: Andrew Merry Vice-Principal Middle School: Wayne Chow

During my childhood, my father would often preface his trips to the garage with the announcement that he was going downstairs to “putter,” often saying that he was “just going to putter around” in the garage. What he usually ended up doing for the next few hours was fixing broken toys, lamps or other appliances, or working on the cars. I distinctly remember looking up the word “putter” after hearing my father use the term, trust me, he “puttered” a lot, and chuckling when I read the definition: to occupy oneself with minor or unimportant tasks. But even then I knew that what my father was doing wasn’t minor or unimportant. Seeing him fix broken stuff around the house was an important lesson on the value of resourcefulness, frugality, and helping others. Some of my most productive days now are those lazy Saturdays when I putter around the house, doing some housework perhaps between writing these short pieces, and then maybe going for a walk. We never know what we might find or how we might get inspired when we putter. You don’t always need a prioritized list in order to get stuff done or to savor life in all its glory. Sometimes you just need to take the time to putter.

What’s Happening in Mission

DoorWarz will take place at Mission Raceway Park July 5-7. SPEEDZONE PHOTO

Biggest full-bodied race car event in Canada a week away BY DEAN MURDOCH Record contributor

Mission Raceway Park is the largest NHRA track in Canada and is considered one of the best race tracks in North America due to its sea level location and cool west coast air. Situated in Canada, though, has been a bit of a handicap because 90 per cent of the racers are American. One of the ways to work around that is to promote an event that is a bit off the norm. Mission Raceway is doing just that for DoorWarz, July 5-7. This is the first event solely for fast full-bodied doorcars, and this is the first time this type of race has been held in Canada. The event will have the largest ever purse for the feature class, Outlaw Pro Mod, with $50,000 in prize money, making it the largest payout of 2013 in North America. The Pro Mod class is one of the most exciting classes in drag racing due to the

vehicle’s designs and wild runs down the quarter-mile. More than 45 cars are pre-entered for the event; 20 more than have ever been in Canada. There are six other classes competing as well and they include Outlaw 10.5 (a similar car to the Pro Mods but running on a smaller tire). There is a total purse for the weekend close to $85,000. Outlaw Pro Mod will be featured in next week’s issue. The Outlaw 10.5 will feature four or five Canadian teams with a good chance of winning the event. The main competitor, Doug Sikora, hails from California. He has won the Street Cat Super Nationals event in Las Vegas before and has gone as quick as a 6.13/235 in the quarter mile. Langley’s Steve Nicholson is the quickest Canadian car in the class and he hopes to improve and run in the 6.30-6.40 range. Locals Ken Sihota and Roy Moznik are also hoping to run well See FEATURE Page 16

ne of the things I stress in teaching my classes is finding your own place in the sport. Everyone fishes for their own reasons; therefore everyone needs to make their sport their own. Take for instance your rod; you know what you want, you know what you want it to do and you know how you want it to feel in your hand; your fishing should be no different. As an angler, you would like your rights respected, so it is only fitting that you respect your fellow anglers. The idea behind recreational fishing is fun, not slagging. This coming long weekend we celebrate Canada Day. Tolerance, and respect for others is part of who we are as Canadians. Let’s show it this weekend.

First Full Cupboard being featured Friday The Envision Twilight Concert Series continues on Friday, June 28 from 7 to 8 p.m. with Bijou du Bayou performing in Fraser River Heritage Park. Bijoux Du Bayou started as a traditional Cajun/ zydeco cover band, but when the guys started performing their own material, other influences crept into the sound. Although still strongly Cajun and zydeco rooted, you can hear New Orleans, tex-mex, calypso, swing, rock and country elements coming through in Bijoux’s distinct sound. The result is a musical gumbo that’s sort of Cajun and very Canadian, making it Canajun music. But when you’ve got a sound that keeps the dance floor packed “tout la nuit, as they would say down south in Cajun country, who cares what it’s called? On June 28, the first Full Cupboard Friday of the season happens. The Full Cupboard is an innovative community program designed to raise food, funds and awareness for food banks throughout the Lower SEE GROOVEDADDY PAGE 19

Mainland, Fraser Valley and Kitimat. Through this program, Envision Financial has committed to raising at least $1 million for local food banks over the next 10 years. “Envision Financial is proud of our long standing partnership with the Mission Heritage Association and the Envision Twilight Concert series,” said Carol Hamilton, manager of Envision’s Mission branch explaining the Full Cupboard program supports children and families in the community. All donations benefit St. Joseph’s food bank. Groovedaddy bring their jazz funk to the park on Wednesday, July 3 from 7 to 8 p.m. Groovedaddy is fairly new, but many of the members have played together for years in other bands. Chuck Cave (keyboards and alto sax) and Zaf Kundakcioglu (drums and percussion) wanted to form a band to play the music that soothes the soul and moves the feet. They found the perfect guitar player for the group in Jim Verwoerd

and a short time later were very happy to add Johan Worst on bass. Groovedaddy play their own compositions as well as the music of artists like Steely Dan, Lennon-McCartney, and Stevie Wonder. Whatever they’re playing, it’s “smooth jazz, right down to your soul.” The Envision Twilight Concerts are held every Wednesday and Friday throughout the summer For more information call 604-826-0277.

BANNISTER Gordon It is with great sadness that we announce that Gordon Alanson Bannister has passed away. Gordon passed peacefully on June 12 at the Dr. Stuart Pavilion at the Ebenezer Care home in Abbotsford with his good friend Nancy Olund by his side. Gordon was born in Mission on September 11th, 1939 to his proud parents Samuel and Emily Bannister. Gordon work for the Mission School District for many years as maintenance staff. He was a history buff and upon his retirement he spent most of his time tracing his family tree and visiting historical sites. Gordon resided in the Dr. Stuart Pavilion in the final years of his life and we would like to thank the staff for all of the loving and wonderful care they provided Gordon. Gordon will be greatly missed by his family and friends Colleen, Warren, Cheri, Neil, Dean, and Nancy.

MISSION SENIORS A monthly guide to events, resources and services for Mission Seniors

June 2013

Thank you, Mission The Mission Seniors Advisory Committee wishes to offer our most sincere thanks to those local seniors organizations, senior residences, bus transportation people and all of the volunteers who made Seniors Week (May 31-June 8) a success.

Sincerely, Bryan Fawcette, Chair, Mission Seniors Advisory Committee, and Danny Plecas, Chair, Seniors Week Committee

•••

community (and, interestingly, the more connected we feel, the higher our degree of generosity and compassion). Rituals don’t need to be religious to be effective. You might be uplifted by nature walks with a group in your neighbourhood or by a nightly dinner-time routine where everyone in your family shares something great that happened to them that day.

Ombudsperson Kim Carter speaks during Seniors Week On Friday, May 31 the start of Mission Seniors’ Week, Kim Carter, the BC Ombudsperson gave a presentation at the Mission Seniors Activity Centre. Together with the executive director of Intake and Systemic Investigations, Bruce Ronayne, they explained the role of the Office of the Ombudsperson in ensuring seniors are treated fairly in British Columbia. They have jurisdiction over 2,500 provincial public authorities, receive more than 8,000 inquiries and complaints a year and have over 2,000 files investigated. The ombudsperson role for specific complaints is to generally oversee the administrative actions of government authorities with a view of upholding the democratic principles of openness, transparency

and accountability. Was the person treated in a fair and reasonable manner? Were the rules followed? Are the rules fair and reasonable? Are there gaps or areas for improved service delivery? Carter’s February 2012 report highlighted: • The Best of Care: Getting It Right for Seniors in British Columbia. • Investigation of home and community care issues, home support, assisted living and residential care including adequacy of information; access to services; standards of care; complaint processes; monitoring and enforcement; and facility closures. Seniors can make individual complaints to the Ombudsperson Office by calling 1-800-567-3247, or visit www.bcombudsperson.ca.

Seniors week successes A successful Seniors’ Week started May 31 with a visit and presentation by the BC Ombudsperson, Kim Carter, who explained what her office can do for seniors. A “Royal Tea” on Saturday presented by Lifetime Learning and was well attended, as it is every year. The next day, there was a lunch at the Seniors Centre provided by the Cedarbrooke Chateau, featuring Steve Lau “The Hong Kong Cowboy,” who sang some country tunes and popular rock oldies. On Monday, June 3, the popular Ice Cream Social, hosted by Karen Reed at Carrington House, was a great success. On Tuesday, there was an open house at the Mission Lawn Bowling club which drew a few new people who tried out their skills on the bowling greens, and the

matinee at SilverCity, which showed the movie The Quartet. Entry was by donation which went to support the Starlight Foundation with a match of the funds by MCSS. There was an open house at the Cedars on Wednesday, hosted by Tricia Schweers, and their talented chef. The band Sweet Water played and sang for a large audience and the patrons danced away the afternoon on Thursday at the Mission Seniors Activity Centre. There was a huge turnout for the great barbecue Friday hosted by the Old Age Pensioners Organization. The hamburgers were awesome. The week wrapped up with the annual Pancake Breakfast put on by the Mission Legion on Saturday morning.

Loneliness and the community Think about volunteering, exercising or joining a dance club to stay active. Persistent loneliness is associated with high-blood pressure, obesity, sleep dysfunction, depression, compromised immunity and Alzheimer’s disease. Stress caused by loneliness may even increase your risk of cancer. So, seek to revitalize friendships and family relationships and choose friends carefully. Learning is a lifelong adventure and an opportunity to expand your social network. If you suspect someone you know is lonely — reach out! Similarly, if you have been feeling sad or anxious for weeks on end, stressful about financial or family relationships, or if you aren’t sleeping and eating well, or if you are avoiding people, you may be depressed. Don’t go it alone — seek help! Growing older can mean dealing

with many changes. Physical pain and loss of mobility can make it hard to get out. Being on your own or caring for someone can be lonely. Loneliness is stressful. Some rely on alcohol or medications to reduce feelings of fear or anxiety, which often leaves individuals more isolated. Maybe something positive like a bus ad, “We love our Seniors’” may help get a message across to society. Routinely assess your community. How age-friendly is your

neighbourhood and is a formal or informal age-friendly program available? Do your elected politicians lead from an informed, empathetic and compassionate role, or are they indifferent and making excuses for inaction more the order of the day? Do seniors’ have a dedicated facility to gather and on a year round 24/7 availability, as loneliness doesn’t take time off evenings, weekends or holiday seasons. Indeed, it often is exacerbated when comradeship is denied. Some associations, seniors activity centres or gathering places may be perceived too “cliquish” and

many may not feel comfortable attending. Some simple steps like recognizing a 55-year-old or 75-year-old may have different interests can help create a welcoming environment. Make sure the person who answers the phone is friendly, polite, patient and easy to understand; have a pleasant person available to meet and greet new people and to welcome people back when they have been absent. Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. Misison’s newest seniors housing project, Cedar Valley Manor, is now being built The Mission Association for Seniors Housing (MASH) is pleased to announce Cedar Valley Manor, the newest and most innovative housing option for people 55 and older in Mission, is finally under construction. Completion is scheduled for early fall 2014! MASH would like to extend its sincerest thanks to Envision Financial, which has generously provided the financing necessary to turn this dream of so many into a reality. The groundbreaking and sod

turning for the start of construction began with shovels hitting turf on Saturday, June 15. In attendance were Member of Parliament Randy Kamp, members of the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia Marc Dalton and Simon Gibson, and Mission Mayor Ted Adlem. Also in attendance were many of Mission’s

residents who have put in countless hours of hard work to make this project a reality, and the early purchasers of the project, whose faith kept the dream alive. Cedar Valley Manor offers a new, simple and secure way for people 55 and over to age in the community they call home,

protected from the real estate market and without the hassles of home maintenance and yard work. Additionally, the construction of the project over the next year provides numerous construction jobs in the local community, and the builder, Andreas Development, is committed to hiring as many local trades people as possible. The MASH board of directors, and the whole project team, would like to extend their most sincere thanks to the citizens of Mission for supporting this project and for recognizing the need for a project like Cedar Valley Manor, which will be an asset for the community in the years to come. From everyone working on Cedar Valley Manor, thank you. We look forward to updating you on this exciting project as the building begins to take form over the coming months.
