After the August 23 Manila hostage incident, wherein 8 Hong Kong tourist and hostage taker Rolando Mendoza died, President Noynoy Aquino established a special committee , that is The Incident Investigation and Review Committee (IIRC), to make an in-depth investigation as to its findings on the whole event as well as its recommendations as to who are the responsible individuals and entities to the outcome of this hostage.
I will release the committee’s recom mendations alongside the legal team’s evaluation and recommended course of action at that time. We are committed to implement ing the necessary changes to upgrade the capabilities of our local government units, police and security forces, to en sure the safety of the public. We have also been working to review and improve our procedures and protocols for emer gency and crisis situations and a draft of a new crisis management manual is now being prepared. This report represents a significant and necessary step in this process.

Bitan
Bitan located at Xindian is ac tually part of Xindian creek which makes its way mostly through the Taipei county mountains. The name Bitan means “emerald lake”, and is derived from the natural, emerald-turquoise color of the wa ter. Bitan is a quite popular destina tion spot in Taipei County, especially since going there is really easy even for first timers. This recreation area is open from day until late night all year round. Going to the Bitan area will just take about a 5-10 minutes walk from the Xindian MRT Station, and on the way you can immediately see food stalls offering different delicacies lined up along the street. You have to climb a flight of stairs to reach the Bitan area and then descend a stairs towards the lake area. Upon going down the stairs you can see children playing around in the water fountain spouting from the floor. On the left side is where the Bitan food court is located. Bitan’s food court offers comfortable seats with a great view of the lake, the suspension bridge and the mountains surrounding the lake. It’s a great place to have a chat with friends and family while drinking some fruit tea. However, though the stalls at the food court have a variety of food and drinks to choose from the prices are a bit expensive.

For those who wants to splurge a little we suggest the Shabu Shabu or Teppanyaki Pan-fried Black Pepper Beef set meal which comes with soup, bowl of rice and a really tall glass of your choice drink. The set meal cost 320nt and is also good for two so we suggest ordering just another bowl of rice which costs 20nt. For the drink we recommend the Iced Pearl Milk Tea or Iced Passion Fruit Green Tea to quench your thirst during the hot summer. After the meal you can also rent a pedal boat since this is the best way to view the bridge and get a closer touch of the lake. There are a lot of cute pedal boats to choose from, and they also offer bigger ones which can seat 4-6 persons so that barkadas can enjoy the ride at the same time. Life jackets are also provided to ensure the safety of the riders. A ride could cost 150nt an hour. Bitan during the night is a roman tic sight to see with all the lights il luminating the bridge. So those who want to get away from the city noise we recommend giving Bitan a visit and experience a different ambience to relax and enjoy. How to get to Bitan Take the MRT Green Line to Xindian and get off at the last station (Xindian MRT Station). With about 10 minutes walk you should see the entrance to the suspension bridge. Paul says Love is patient (Corinthians 13 verse 4). What does it mean love is patient? We say love is patient (mapagtiya-tiyaga o mapagpa sensiya) because it is enduring, tolerant, composed, unwearied, uncomplaining, long-suffering, serene and calm. It is not impatient, irritable, hysterical, raging, high strung, or violent. I read a story that Thomas Lindberg shared. According to a traditional Hebrew story, Abraham was sitting outside his tent one evening when he saw an old man, weary from age and journey, coming to ward him. Abraham rushed out, greeted him, and then invited him into his tent. There he washed the old man’s feet and gave him food and drink. The old man immediately began eating without saying any prayer or blessing. So Abraham asked him, “Don’t you worship God?”The old traveler replied, “I worship fire only and reverence no other god.” When he heard this, Abraham became incensed, grabbed the old man by the shoulders, and threw him out his tent into the cold night air. When the old man had departed, God called to his friend Abraham and asked where the stranger was. Abraham replied, “I forced him out because he did not wor shipGodyou.”answered, “I have suffered him these eighty years although he dishon ors me. Could you not endure him one night?”Some people think they have a right to get upset in the face of irritations and tri als. Impatience seems like a holy anger. The Bible, however, praises patience as a fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22) which should be produced for all who believe and follow Christ (1 Thess. 5:14). Patience reveals our faith in God’s timing, omnipo tence, and love. When everything is going our way, patience is easy to demonstrate. The true test of patience comes when our rights are violated—when another person cuts us on the line; when we are treated unfairly; when our coworker express dislike in us or puts us down with nasty words. Although most people consider pa tience to be a passive waiting or gentle tolerance, most of the words used in the original language of the Bible translated “patience” in the New Testament are ac tive, strong words. Patience (Pagti-tiyaga, o pagpapasen siya) does not develop overnight (sa magdamag lamang). God’s power and goodness are crucial to the development of patience. The Apostle Paul tells us in Colossians 1:11, that we are strength ened by Him to “great endurance and patience,” while in another passage (James 1:3-4), God encourages us to know that trials are His way of perfecting our patience. Our patience is further de veloped and strengthened by resting in God’s perfect will and timing, even in the face of evil men who “succeed in their ways, when they carry out their wicked schemes” (Psalm 37:7). Our patience is rewarded in the end “because the Lord’s coming is near” (James 5:7-8). We see in the Bible many examples of those whose patience showed their walk with God. From Aklan to Taipei
Meann as she is more popu larly known by her custom ers is Vivian Ordines Fang, 40 years old, and hails from Altavas, Aklan. She first arrived in Taiwan in 1994 to work as a Domestic Helper in Hsichi for 4 years. In 1997 Meann met Fang Rong Ho who was introduced by her employer and a year later they were married in the Philippines. But Meann will have to stay in the Philippines until 2000 to take care of the necessary papers. When she went back to Taiwan she decided to become a full time wife and mother. To earn more income for their fam ily, Meann opened a small business and turned the first level of their house locat ed at Taan City into a small Pinoy store. She started the business by selling phone cards and few grocery items. Eventually she added more prod ucts to her store and also started providing remit tance and cargo service to her fellow Filipinos around and even beyond the vi cinityStartingarea. a business is not an easy feat; although the store gave her some thing to do to pass the time she encoun ters difficulty specially with managing of her time as she is also first and foremost a wife and mother to three kids. To gain customers she also gave out flyers at the nearby day market. Gradually her efforts paid off as she is getting more and more customers by the recommendation of her regular patrons. Her store opens everyday Monday to Sunday from 9am till 10pm. Peak hours are usually during morning, so she is able to close the shop during lunch time to take care of her children and then tries to find time in the afternoon to prepare dinner for her family. The pres sure is lessened because not only does her husband supports her he even helps her with the business. Meann shows her love and grati tude to her regulars by throwing Christ mas party for them every year and even giving them gifts. For Meann how you treat the customers is essential to the success of a busi ness, she deals with her customers with a calm composure and sweet voice. It is important to show them respect and love to ensure their continuous patronage. Meann although quite shy in nature is able to have a successful and com fortable life in Taiwan even from her humble beginnings because of her hard work and dedication.
