A stampede in the Cambodian capital Phnom Penh has left 349 peo ple dead and hundreds injured after panic erupted at the last day of the water festival which is held every No vember. The stampede that occurred late night on November 22 is what the prime minister called the country's biggest tragedy since the 1970s reign of terror by the Khmer Rouge. Authorities had estimated that up ward of 2 million people attended the Phnom Penh for the three-day water fes tival, which marks the end of the rainy season and whose main attraction is traditional boat races along the river. Re port said that the panic started on Koh Pich — Diamond Island — a long spit of land wedged in a fork in the river where a concert was being held. The municipal police chief said that the stampede, which began around 10 p.m., likely oc curred because a suspension bridge connecting Phnom Penh to a nearby island where thousands had gathered to celebrate the water festival began to sway, creating panic. Police began firing water cannon onto a bridge to an island in the center of a river in an effort to get them to con tinue moving across the bridge which caused complete and utter panic. A number of people lost consciousness and fell into the water; some may have been electrocuted. Witnesses have said that the bridge was festooned with electric lights, which may have played a role in the electrocutions. The government denied anyone was electrocuted. But a doctor who declined to be identified publicly said the main cause of death was suffoca tion and electrocution. Police were also among the dead. Most drowned, suffocated or were trampled while trying to leave the bridge. Many had been eating in out door restaurants and were crossing the bridge to return to the city. Disori ented victims struggled to find an es cape hatch through the human mass, pushing their way in every direction. After the stampede, bodies were stacked upon bodies on the bridge as rescuers swarmed the area. Ambulances raced back and forth between the river and the hospitals for several hours after the stampede. Calmette Hospital, the capital's main medical facility, was filled to capacity with bodies as well as patients, some of whom had to be treated in hallways. Relatives, some crying, searched for the missing bodies. Hours after the chaos, the dead and injured were still being taken away from the scene, while searchers looked for bodies of anyone who might have drowned. Hundreds of shoes were left behind on and around the bridge. The government television station said 395 people had been killed and 500 injured. Death toll is expected to go up.

“He speaks of condom as a permissible tool, not the primary tool, to arrest further spread of the HIV virus. Condom use is not the moral solution to the alarming spread of the virus and disease.

“Unless the RH bill goes through and unless you are able to offer the poor est economic quintile the choices that they deserve, then people will be poorer. You will be importing food, you will be more like Somalia than Thailand,” Potts said.

“Our clergy cannot be more popish than the pope,” Aquino’s spokesman, Ricky Carandang, told reporters when asked whether Benedict’s comments would bolster momentum for the passing of the reproductive health bill.

“Neither does the Holy Father speak of it (condom use) in the context of popu lation issues,” the monsignor said in a statement.

Contraceptive aprubado ng Santo Papa

The Reproductive Health bill seeks to promote the natural and artificial birth control methods through the sponsored government programs as to create an early precaution from the population blow that is expected to hit the Philippines if the country does not to start to take ac tion. The Church groups are against in promulgating the said bill since they only consider the natural method such as ab stinence and the use of fertility beads among women the only way for controlling the population. Though controversial the House of Representatives or the Congress are still pushing to pass the bill either by mid next year or by end of next year.

Clergy cannot be more popish than the Pope

The family planning lobby say such a law is needed to help contain a popula tion that has doubled to 94 million in just three decades, and is still growing at 1.8 percent a year according to World Bank figures. However the Catholic Church, a powerful institution in the Philippines, insisted the pope’s comments had been misinterpreted.“TheHolyFather’s latest teaching on condom use does not in any way change the position of the church against artificial contraception,” said Monsignor Juanito Figura, secretary-general of the country’s Catholic bishops association.

Figura insisted the pope’s comments had nothing to do with family planning.

Malcolm Potts, an populationAmerican expert, said that the Philippines might end up like Somalia where in population has bal looned and resources are not enough to sus tain the needs of the population. He said that the Philippines may face the worst economic and environmental catastrophe if we reached the projected population of 160 million inhabitants by 2050.

“I think these (data) charts should give us all nightmares—those who love this country and have been here many times and those of you who belong here and love your country,” he added.

Leaders of the House of Representa tives have also prepared a hero’s wel come for the pound-for-pound king, who also happens to be their colleague. Fel low legislators, officials and employees at the Lower Congress would pay trib ute to the greatness of Pacquiao as he is about to receive his second congres sional medal of distinction. Members of the House have contributed funds for the victory party. Sarangani Rep. Manny Pac quiao has been “emotionally touched” by the decision of his colleagues to contrib ute to the victory celebrations.

President Benigno Aquino and other contraceptive advocates said the pope’s remarks that using condoms could be justified to stop the spread of AIDS, would help overcome church resistance to a bill that would compel the govern ment to supply the poor with condoms.

Health Bill on the way Hero

The latest bill, introduced in July, is the fifth attempt by family planning ad vocates since 1998 to pass a law that would require the government to make condoms available to the poor, and to educate them about contraceptives.

1. Stay hydrated: Remember to drink water throughout the day. Many feelings of hunger we get are really our body’s way of telling us we’re becoming dehydrated. When this happens, have a glass or two of water and wait about 20 minutes. If you’re still hungry, then go ahead and eat something. Try also to drink a couple glasses of water before you go to a holiday party. This helps you eat less and keep cravings at bay.

We had a conversation and I discovered how beautiful a person she was. I am im pressed how she could engage in a conversation.”Nagingconstant din ang kani lang komunikasyon at inaming “We have been spending some time together as long as our schedules wouldSinopermit.”nga ba si Liz Uy sa lar angan ng showbiz? They go to church together every Sunday. Liz and Noy share a birthday, Feb. 18, and she’s a wife material.” I would like to say, whatever hap pened, I would like to keep it as private as we can, with all due respect to all the persons involved.” Nang kunan ng reaksyon si Claudine nasabi niya na “Regarding that nga, I find it so funny and strange na they can say that, as if parati silang pumupunta sa ba hay namin at nakikita nila ang nangyayari sa relasyon naming ni Raymart. The truth is, it’s been a long time since we’ve talked to one another. Matagal na kaming hindi nagkikita or nagbabalitaan, so paano siya makakapagsal ita nang ganon’n?” Ang huling message ni Claudine ay “Siguro, what’s best is that she just talks about her own life, her own love life, kesa sa pag-usapan niya ang samahan namin ng mister ko.” Claudine assured the public na okay sila ng pamilya niya, “It may not be perfect, but as far as I am concerned, okay kami. Wa lang problema with my family.”

1. Take a good look in the mirror. Look for your good features and your "not so good" features. You are going to want to use accessories you have or purchase accessories to downplay your less at tractive features and draw attention to your good features.

2. Use trendy or stylish jewelry such as earrings, bracelets, necklaces and even watches to put the stylish edge on a classic outfit. Leave the trendy outfits for much younger women and fo cus on the use of accessories. Metallic jewelry in silver, bronze or copper adds a glow to an older woman's skin and facial tones.

3. Wear fash ionable neck laces at the round part of your neck or throat if you have loose skin in this area. Wear necklaces that have a little sparkle to them or colored beads with a chunky cut to them. A beautiful silk scarf wrapped loosely around the neck also adds a punch of color to a classic outfit. Even wear a higher neck collar or turtleneck with a longer necklace in a trendy style.

4. Spend your money on purses and shoes that are in style to compliment your classic outfits. Shoes and hand bags can really age a woman, so keep these current. Of course, keep it ageappropriate as well. Boots that come up over the knees just don't look tasteful on a 60-year-old woman.

Women today are more fashion conscious than ever before. This includes women in their 40s, 50s, 60s and up. The fashion in dustry seems to focus on youth with styles and trends. However, older wom en should not shy away from the latest trends, but rather use accessories to find your own style at any age.

6. Update your hairstyle to something more fresh and stylish. If you've had the same hair style for 20 years, it's time for a new do. Again, the new style should suit a mature woman and not try to look like a teenager. Your hairstyle really accessorizes your look, so keep it updated by trying a new style, cut or color.

7. Schedule a consultation with your makeup stylist or at your local depart ment store. There are many new make up techniques for ma ture or older women to use to accessorize their best features and downplay less attrac tive ones. accessoriesfashion

5. Purchase coats in classic styles that compliment your size as well as your age. Scarves, again, will put that touch of style on your coat or outerwear.

Mariel ready to reconcile with Toni Actress-television host Mariel Rodriguez is not closing her door to a possible reconciliation with Toni Gonzaga.

Very clean ang lahat.

Higit sa lahat, manalangin sa Diyos at humingi ng giya sa pag-re-resolba ng problema. e are almost on the last throes of November, and in just a few weeks, Christmas will come knocking on our doors. For us Filipinos, we love Christmas more than any other holidays. It has always been a joyful time when we can spend it with our families and the people we love most. But Christmas doesn't always work that way. Unfortunately, for us, who are working abroad and living far away from our fami lies, this Yuletide Season brings us more pain than joy. It seems only yesterday that our families are within arm’s reach from us, but as we face harsh reality, we soon real ized that Christmas without them is just not quite the same. If we are in the Philippines we would be hearing the melodious Christmas carols from the children, we would see vibrant and colorful parols hanging everywhere, malls and markets packed with buyers preparing for their rush Christmas sales. And then there is the ever present smell of puto bungbong and bibingka during the week of Simbang Gabi and Christ mas songs that can be heard in every station of the radio. These are just some of the things we missed. I must say, Christmas is a lot harder for OFW's. However, since Fili pinos are known for being ingenious, we still managed to find ways to feel the spirit of Christmas even in countries that do not celebrate the said event. Filipinos during this season gather with their friends to share food and drinks and even give presents to each other. It is also nice to know that nowadays, communication is easier since there is email, chat, even video call to allow us to greet our love ones a Merry Christmas. But more than the gifts, the food, the songs, and all the material things, Christ mas, I believe, imparts a more valuable lesson in life. We should remind ourselves that Christmas is celebrated because it is the time that we can become a better per son by virtues of generosity and gratefulness. Christmas always gives us a chance to shine and display our greatness. With these thoughts, I would like to borrow a line from this year’s ABS-CBN’s Christmas station ID theme song “Ngayong Pasko Magniningning ang Pilipino” in terpreted by Gary Valenciano and Toni Gonzaga, to emphasize that all Filipinos de serve a fair chance to shine this Christmas Season. This line I believe is very apt for the recently concluded match of Pacquiao and Margarito, wherein the Filipinos shine once again as Pacquiao proved to the whole world how great a fighter he is and give all the Filipinos around the world something to be proud of, but what is more commendable was when he showed inner strength when he refused to inflict more damage towards his opponent. One impressive statement that stood out from his interview was when he said that, “boxing is not for killing each other.” On the same note, it is not only Pacquiao who makes our country proud, as there is also Charice Pempengco who does not tire of proving to the world how talented Filipinos are. While, Efren Penaflorida (CNN’s 2009 Hero of the year) also showed the world that Filipinos are really compassionate people when he selflessly mobilized his kariton making the streets his classroom for the less fortunate children. They are just among the many ones who continuously give us something to be proud of and something to believe in. Their successes give us hope that each and every one of us can also achieve what they had achieved.

Have a Joyous Yule tide Season, Dear Readers!

Another reason why Filipinos shine throughout the world is because of our OFW’s. Their dedication to their job, caring towards other people, their talents and in telligence, and most especially their determination to succeed are among the things that foreigners admire. They struggle to be apart from their love ones just so they can ensure them a good future and thus, there is no greater love than this. Whether we like it or not, the hostage taking that took place last August in Manila have marred the image of our country ever since. Not to mention the calamities that hit the country one after the other which is taking a toll to our countrymen and their love ones abroad. But these are not reasons for us to cry and pout this Christmas. As we are Filipinos, we thrived to come out unscathed in every adversity that comes our way. We always find reasons to be happy during Christmas. Put a little love in your heart and open your eyes to see that Christmas is a time of celebration and joy. Then, you will slowly realize that Christmas is not so bad after all. As I end this article, I want the readers to remem ber that “We make a living by what we get but we make a life by what we give.” I hope that we could all shine this Christmas.
