VMAQ-2 increases combat proficiency

Marine Corps changes authorized ‘professional gear’ for PCS LANCE CPL. JOSHUA R. HEINS MCAS CHERRY POINT

Marines and Sailors planning permanent change of station moves during the summer season should expect a change to the amount of professional gear authorized as part of a funded PCS. The Department of Defense plans to change policies regarding authorized weight limits for professional gear and what items constitute progear. The changes take effect May 1. There is currently no weight limit for pro-gear, but with the scheduled change, a maximum net weight of 2,000 pounds applies, with no waivers, according to Sgt. Bryan Xayvong, the personal property noncommissioned officer in charge at Cherry Point’s Distribution Management Office. “The main reason for the change is many members were trying to claim anything and everything as pro-gear,” said Xayvong. According to www.move.mil, the Defense Personal Property Program’s website, pro-gear is considered, “articles of household goods in a member’s possession needed for the performance of official duties at the next or later destination,” including: reference material not available at the destination base or station; specialized equipment designed for specific trades; specialized clothing for use during official duties; certain radio equipment; individually owned or specially issued field gear; and official awards to specific individuals. Some items not considered pro-gear during ofSee DMO page A7

Cherry Point hosts 1st Sexual Assault Awareness Month 5K LANCE CPL. ANDREA CLEOPATRA DICKERSON MCAS CHERRY POINT

Approximately 350 service members and civilians participated in Cherry Point’s inaugural Sexual Assault Awareness Month 5K along Marine Air Control Group 28’s physical fitness test course April 25 at Cherry Point. Cherry Point hosted several events throughout the month to highlight the importance of sexual assault prevention and response. The campaign theme this year was “Live Our Values: Step Up to Stop Sexual Assault.” “We need cultural change where every service member is treated with dignity and respect, where all allegations of inappropriate behavior are treated with seriousness, where victims’ privacy is protected, where bystanders are motivated to intervene, and where offenders know that they will be held accountable by strong and effective systems of justice.” Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel during a DoD press briefing last year. The event was a great way to get people across the air station involved and build camaraderie, said Gunnery Sgt. Zane J. Poe, the Marine Wing Headquarters Squadron 2 Uniformed Victim Advocate. “We could not have done this event without the support of our leadership,” Poe said. “They really got behind us and made things happen.” For one Marine, the event was more than just an opportunity to squeeze more physical fitness into his day. Gunnery Sgt. Edward Gress, an aviation ordnanceman with MWHS-2, said he is an avid marathon runner, but this run really hit home and stood out from the rest. He said the event was more meaningful because he knows people who have been victims. Gress felt it was important to show his support for sexual assault prevention. Maintenance Marines with Marine Attack Training Squadron 203 play a vital role in ensuring AV-8B Harriers are serviceable to the squadron, which supports both the squadron’s mission of developing pilots for the fleet and the overall mission of 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing. The maintenance Marines go through extensive training in school that is not only essential for them to learn, but is important for the pilots who are learning to fly the aircraft, according to Staff Sgt. Sean C. Corey, a fixed-wing aircraft mechanic with VMAT-203.

“In order for the squadron to train pilots, the maintenance crews have to keep these planes flying so the pilots can complete their sorties and transition into the fleet,” said Corey. The squadron’s maintenance department is made up of 10 individual sections. The individual sections include airframe mechanics and avionics and ordnance technicians, whose daily tasks range from inspecting aircraft functions to repairing aircraft systems, according to Corey. The Marines responsible for maintaining the squadron’s aircraft work as efficiently and carefully as possible to repair and maintain the aircraft. After

repairs are made, collateral duty inspectors log and monitor all changes or updates conducted on the aircraft in order to ensure quality control, according to Corey. Although the process can be time consuming, it is essential for both the maintenance Marines and the student pilots, said Corey. “This job requires our Marines to be flexible and patient,” said Corey. “We depend on every maintenance crew member to ensure these aircraft are ready for flight.” Lance Cpl. Master Sgt. Mark J. Francis and his family received the Havelock Military Family of the Quarter Award during a ceremony at El Cerro Grande Mexican Bar and Grill in Havelock April 22. The Havelock Military Affairs Committee, local sponsors and fellow military members attended the ceremony to express their appreciation for the Francis family and their service to local schools and organizations. “We are very humbled and honored to receive this award,” said Mark. “We are usually behind the scenes doing things for people that are being honored, so this was very much unexpected.” As supporters of the Havelock High School band program and extracurricular activities, Mark and his wife, Colleen Francis, oversee approximately 200 students. The couple acts as chaperons and assist with equipment and help prepare uniforms for the students’ performances. The family also volunteers their time with the Havelock High School swim team and volleyball team. In addition, they provide guidance and assistance to transitioning active duty service members. As citizens of the community, the Francis family feels it is their responsibility to make sure they give back to their community. “Together everybody achieves more,” said Mark. “As communal human beings, it is in our nature to give back.” Besides being a father of three, a husband and active volunteer, Mark is also an intelligence analyst with Marine Wing Headquarters Squadron 2. As a leader of Marines, he takes pride in encouraging his Marines to volunteer within the community by both setting the example and providing them with volunteer opportunities. “I provide as much opportunity as I can for my Marines to volunteer, and I make it very easy for them to contribute to the community,” said Mark. “It’s important that we set the example and we show them that See VOLUNTEER page A7

News Briefs Celebrate Armed Forces Day Every year since 1950, the United States has celebrated Armed Forces Day. The 64th observance of Armed Forces day will take place on the third Saturday in May. The day is to commemorate those Americans who have served in the armed forced that granted both freedom and courage to the nation’s citizens today. For more information visit MARADMIN 015/14.

Asian Pacific American Month Service members are encouraged to celebrate Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month during the month of May. This year’s theme is “I am beyond.” The awareness month was implemented in 1992 to commemorate the immigration of the first Japanese to the United States on May 7, 1843 and to mark the anniversary of the completion of the Transcontinental Railroad on May 10, 1869. During Asian Heritage Month, commanders are encouraged to recognize and celebrate the dedicated service and contributions of Asian Americans both past and present, to our country and Corps, according to MARADMIN 211/14.

Our Shared Call to Serve CMDR. JEFFERY PLUMMER 2ND MARINE AIRCRAFT WING DEPUTY CHAPLAIN

Whether we’re religious or spiritual or not, I firmly believe that all of us who serve our great nation as a Marine or Sailor is called to serve. Something stirred within us. That something, I believe to be God, inspired us to this higher call to serve. Our friends from high school or college may have gone into business or some trade or profession to earn their living and pay, which is good; however, many of us who serve may have felt something drawing us, calling us beyond the hope of merely thinking in terms of earning a paycheck. We felt something pulling us, calling us to something more, to serve within this heroic community composed of people willing to support and defend our nation, family, friends, neighbors, posterity, our future children and children’s children. This sense of calling goes to the heart of our deepest core values ,to the very bedrock of our moral foundation. It speaks of service

that puts others before ourselves. It speaks of sacrifice, and not just our own sacrifice, but of the sacrifice we share with our spouse and children, parents and loved ones who support us in our duties while they remain at home raising our children or managing our household or loving us while we’re deployed. I am just now checking in here at Cherry Point to serve among you, but it feels like coming home to be with family; to be with those who share a sense of calling to serve; to be with those who share the same core values, the love of duty and nation. We may not know each other personally, but we share much in common that unite us in community. So for me to arrive here to serve with you is a homecoming. Here’s the thing, I’m checking in as a geographic bachelor; my wife will remain at home many miles from here, but I am not alone as long as I serve with you because we share a call to serve. If ever any of us should feel alone, all we have to do is look around. We have each other. We share a mutual bond that unites us that says we are never alone because we share a call to serve. I thank God that I am now here to serve with you.

Marine Corps needs PEP billets The military offers service members opportunities to travel abroad and represent the Marine Corps by living up to our core values. The Marine Corps is looking for individuals to serve in Personel Exchange Program billets overseas with trusted foreign partners. Based on MARADMIN 199/14, individuals will facilitate interoperability and the exchange of professional and tactical expertise with the host nation and joint services during two to three year assignments. Candidates must be active duty, meet minimum time on station requirements, have sufficient service remaining upon completion of PEP tour to fulfill a two-year follow on assignment, must have command endorsement, and must complete independent duty screening.

According to Chick, she wasn’t always able to brief her audience without choking up. “Before joining the Marine Corps I couldn’t stand in front of people without getting red in the face,” said Chick. “Now that I’m a Marine it has become much easier and now I am able to brief higher-ups easily which can be a lot of fun.”

Strengthening the bond between the land and air elements of the Marine Corps, a crew from Marine Aerial Refueler Transport Squadron 252 assisted the Marine Special Operations Regiment by lowering the back ramp and inserting Marines over Marine Corps Outlying Field Camp Davis April 24. Twenty-three jumpers and five instructors with MSOR filled a KC-130J Super Hercules from VMGR-252, geared up to conduct both day and night static line parachute operations jumps. “This training is a means of practicing our tactical insertion capabilities,” said a staff sergeant with MSOR. Before takeoff, the Marines practiced actions they would be performing while flying and reviewed mock situations that could take place on the aircraft or while landing, according to the staff sergeant. “The training is great because it also builds camaraderie between the air wing and ground side,” said the staff sergeant. “You need to have trust when working together, and ensure that everyone knows how to safely and effectively execute the operations.” Marines with VMGR-252 also enjoyed the bond built during the training. Parachute operations are one of the few situations where wing Marines interact face-to-face with the ground side, said Sgt. Ryan A. Dayton, a load master with VMGR-252. Jump operations are not supported as frequently compared to missions like aerial refueling or cargo transportation that the squadron conducts regularly, said Dayton. “As load masters it is our job to get everyone out as quickly and safely as possible,” said Sgt. Chris McClellan, a load master with VMGR-252. Everything that occurs when the ramp is up is routine, but when the ramp is down, that is when our training takes place, said McClellan. “The most difficult task is retaining all the information that goes with the mission,” said McClellan. “It is not often that we get a chance to practice this outside of simulation.” The training benefited both sides of the Corps, building the smoothness that is required while deployed. “It is important to stay current with this training,” said Dayton. “It keeps the crew as combat ready as possible and builds into our squadron’s readiness as a whole.

Senior leadership at MCAS Yuma, Ariz., salute the Honorable Ray Mabus, Secretary of the Navy, at the flightline aboard the air station April 24. MARINE CORPS AIR STATION YUMA, Ariz. - The Secretary of the Navy, Honorable Ray Mabus, touched down on the flight line of

Marine Corps Air Station Yuma, Ariz., for the very first time on April 24. A formation of MV-22B Ospreys were lined up on the tarmac adjacent to the secretary’s arrival point.

Having arrived in the midst of the final exercise of Weapon and Tactics Instructor course 2-14, the secretary said it didn’t take long to recognize and appreciate the prominence of MCAS Yuma. “So far it’s been great. [MCAS Yuma] is one of the premier training facilities we have in the Marine Corps,” said Mabus. “Just coming in down the flight line, seeing the MV-22s, seeing the joint strike fighters. I know the quality of training, the quality of work that goes on here is exceptionally high. I’m looking forward to getting out and seeing more of it.” Once he was welcomed aboard by the senior leadership of MCAS Yuma, and before observing any more of the daily operations, the secretary was escorted to the Sonoran Pueblo restaurant here for a special treat. Mabus gathered his lunch from the buffet, sat with a group of junior Marines and Sailors, and chatted with them. He moved from table to table, engaging in conversation with as many station personnel as possible – giving them a chance to voice opinions and learn about the man atop their chain of command. Most importantly, to Mabus, he gained an opportunity to learn from them.

“This is the best part of my job – dealing with Sailors and Marines, and particularly lance corporals, corporals, third class corpsmen, things like that,” said Mabus, a former surface warfare officer in the Navy. “Finding out what concerns them, finding out why they joined the Navy, why they joined the Marine Corps, finding out what their plans are, it’s a thing that makes this job the most worthwhile.” On Friday at 10 a.m., the secretary will officially name the United States Naval Ship Yuma in a ceremony at Gateway Park, in Yuma, Ariz. This will be the final step in the initiation of USNS Yuma into the naval fleet. Mabus believes this ceremony will be a triumphant milestone recognizing the cohesiveness MCAS Yuma and its local community have demonstrated over the past 50 years. “It’s going to honor the people of Yuma because they’ve had such a close relationship with the base here,” explained Mabus. “This is a ship that is going to carry Marines and their equipment for a long time to come.”

Cherry Point spouses go behind scenes, get up close and personal LANCE CPL. GRACE L. WALADKEWICS MARINE CORPS AIR STATION YUMA

Approximately 20 spouses with Marine Aerial Refueler Transport Squadron 252 and Marine Wing Headquarters Squadron 2 got an up-close and personal look at some of the squadrons during a guided tour here April 26. During the tour, spouses learned the history of the air station and walked through the headquarters building where they saw the G3 Operations Center and the commanding general’s conference room. “Within MWHS-2 are 16 different sections,” said Alesha Burkeen, the family readiness officer with MWHS-2. “Each spouse might know a little bit about their own section, but not the whole big picture. This tour is an opportunity to get the spouses out, allow them to meet the command, meet other spouses and treat them to a day of exploration.” The spouses took a trip out to the gas chamber where chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear specialists set up stations to show what they do on a daily basis. The CBRN specialists also gave a demonstration on how to properly perform a decontamination line. Spouses had the opportunity to try on the Level A Suit and a gas mask to get a better understanding of what their spouse may have to experience. “The purpose of the tour is to keep the spouses informed and to show off what their Marine does,”

said Burkeen. “They get to see how cool this base is and how cool it is to be a spouse here.” The next stop on the tour was Marine Wing Support Squadron 271. The motor transport section and combat engineers had weapons and trucks staged outside of the squadron’s headquarters building for spouses to explore. They learned the ins and outs of the machinery by climbing inside and looking around the vehicles and seeing the weapons taken apart and put back together. Spouses were treated to a luncheon at the 19th Hole restaurant at the Sounds of Freedom Golf Course where they played team building games before continuing their tour. “Getting to actually know what it is that our husbands do, instead of just assuming is a great experience. We are really getting a behind the scenes look,” said Melanie Berube, wife of an airframes mechanic with VMGR-252. After lunch, the spouses toured several squadron’s hangars, met members of the command and learned about the different aircraft aboard the station. Learning about the air station and knowing what the Marines do allows spouses to appreciate their spouses more, said Berube. Understanding how important the job the Marines do translates to a better and more understanding marriage at home, she explained. “I feel very grateful for how involved and informed MWHS-2 and VMGR-252 keeps us as spouses,” said Berube. “Some squadrons don’t get to experience what we did today and it makes me feel like I really matter as a spouse and that it is about me and my husband not just the Marine.”

LANCE CPL. LUIS RAMIREZ MARINE CORPS AIR STATION IWAKUNI

GWANGJU AIR BASE, South Korea - Marines with Marine Fighter Attack Squadron 122, participating in the Unit Deployment Program aboard Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni, Japan, arrived aboard Gwangju Air Base, Republic of Korea, April 11, 2014, to support Exercise Max Thunder 14-1. As part of MT14-1, VMFA-122, stationed out of Beaufort, S.C., is providing eight F/A-18 Hor-

net aircraft to support both U.S. and ROK forces in different scenarios throughout the exercise. Max Thunder is a semi-annual training event consisting of composite and coalition flight training between the U.S. military and the Republic of Korea Air Force. The training focuses on planning and execution of aerial interdiction and defensive counter air operations, and incorporates training on air combat tactics, close-air support, and combat search and rescue.

“It’s not just a change of scenery,” said Lt. Col. Douglas DeWolfe, commanding officer of VMFA-122. “It’s an opportunity to put our skills to the test on a larger scale. Fortunately for VMFA-122, we have elements from Marine Wing Support Squadron 171, Marine Aviation Logistics Squadron 12 and Marine Aircraft Group 12 to assist in our training.” “Max Thunder is the premiere air exercise that takes place in South Korea,” said Air Force Col. Sean DeWitt, the 51st Fighter Wing vice com-

mander and acting U.S. deployed forces commander for Exercise MT14-1. “This exercise contributes to strengthening our relationship with the ROK and providing stability to the peninsula.” DeWitt said in the short time the Marines have been in Gwangju, they have been very supportive of the exercise and he has been very impressed with their professionalism and looks forward to working with VMFA-122 during the exercise.

Sesame Street helps children cope with military life LANCE CPL. UNIQUE B. ROBERTS MCAS CHERRY POINT

Military life bears both challenges and achievements for not only the individual service member but their spouse and children. Through the course of a single enlistment, the average service member conducts a permanent change of station one or two times. PCS is the movement from one duty station to the next. During the move, children are often leaving behind what they have built up over the last two years and starting fresh in an unfamiliar place. The USO, in collaboration with V Corporation and Sesame Street Workshop brought service members aboard Cherry Point, a fun interactive

show starring their military child, Katie, April 26 and 27. The Sesame Street USO Experience for Military Families kicked-off in 2008, and over the course of the last six years has been modified to assist families with children both physically and emotionally for their next PCS or deployment. “Katie is obviously going through something that all of our military children go through, (changing duty stations), sometimes six to nine times in their lifetime and her friends on Sesame Street help her find ways to stay in touch with her old friends and find new friends,” said Nicole McClendon, the tour manager of the show. During the production, Katie finds out her family is moving to a new place and she gets the blues. Saddened by the news she informs her friends,

and with the help of featured songs such as “What I Am” and “Things Are Always Changing,” her friends help her through her rough time. The show is designed to travel where military families are stationed and spread happiness where ever they go, according to McClendon. “When one member of the family serves, the entire family serves,” said McClendon. “We want the family to know we are here for the entire family, not just the service member.” During a segment of the show, the characters say hello in different languages to appeal to children of all cultures and ethnic groups. The show is targeted to not only reach different cultures and inform the families about the change, but also say thank you for all of their hard work. “The show is our way of saying thank you to

our military families,” said McClendon. “I like to think of it as one live singing and dancing thank you card that we get to hand deliver all over the world.” Just as McClendon enjoyed the show, the Cherry Point service members and families did so as well. “The show was good, my daughter enjoyed it,” said Grety C. Moreira the spouse of Sgt. Rodolfo Moreira an aviation electronic micro/miniature component and cable repair technician with Marine Aviation Logistics Squadron 14. “She stood up, danced and yelled, she loves Elmo and I think it was a good experience. The kids got to enjoy time with other military families who are going through the same thing. I would recommend it to every military family.”

Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point’s, Officers’ Spouses’ Club hosted the 2014 Officers’ Spouses’ Club Joint Luncheon at Miller’s Landing here April 24. The OSC supports local military spouses and children by offering scholarships and grants for those seeking to further their education and provide financial support for organizations within the local community. “The Officers’ Spouses’ Clubs are all charitable organizations, said Heather Howard, an OSC member and the spouse of Lt. Col. Dan Howard, the commanding officer of Marine Wing Support Squadron 271. “All three of the clubs have their different fundraiser events that give back to the community and that’s really the purpose of all the clubs. More than 120 spouses from military installations, like Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, MCAS New River and Cherry Point, joined together to build camaraderie and talk about key issues in the Marine Corps. “The event builds camaraderie amongst the clubs and aims to celebrate the success of the year, said Howard. “The event is important because we are all in the same geographic area but we don’t necessarily get to see one another. It provides us with a chance

to come together and visit with old friends from different duty stations and celebrate friendship. As the spouses were celebrating, they were also discussing servant leadership proposed by this year’s guest of honor, Mrs. Ellyn Dunford, a member of the OSC and the spouse of Gen. Joseph F. Dunford Jr., commanding general of International Security Assistance Force and United States Forces-Afghanistan. Servant leadership highlights the importance of putting the needs of others before your own and helping them develop and perform as highly as possible. “Servant leadership is taking care of the people around you, making sure that the group as a whole is able to function to its maximum potential or ability, said Dunford. “Whatever the goal is for the group, it is able to happen because you help to nurture the right environment for those people individually or as a group. The luncheon was both a learning experience for the spouses and a time for them to interact with each other. “The luncheon was great, said Anne Girod, an OSC member and the spouse of 1st Lt. Jarrod A. Girod, a ground intelligence officer with 2nd Intelligence Battalion. “Just seeing new people and getting to see a person again is one of the fun things about the Marine Corps.
