Another hurricane season arrives at Cherry Point

Hurricane season arrived quietly June 1 and will continue through November 30. Nobody knows what kind of storms will come with the season, but it is important for Cherry Point families to be aware of potential weather hazards, prepare for those hazards and know the resources available to them. During this period, inland cities such as Havelock, New Bern and James City may be subject to high winds, tornadoes, storm surges and flooding, which are all associated with hurricane and tropical storm activity. Hurricanes have the potential to cause widespread disruptions such as power outages, food and water shortages, short and long-term damage to buildings, roads and other base infrastructure, according to Etta Lucas, the installation emergency manager for Cherry Point. Harsh weather conditions have the potential of halting operations that are essential for running the air station. “The preparedness measures taken prior to landfall such as evacuating aircraft, prestaging of equipment, supplies and staff will have a direct impact on mission readiness,” said Lucas. “This will directly affect training at the ranges, air operations and normal day-to-day operations.” In 2011, the coast was visited by Hurricane Irene, a category 1 hurricane that caused substantial damage to the local Morehead City area. In 2010, Hurricane Earl, another tropical weather system, brought harsh rain and wild winds to the North Carolina area. “The last hurricane to affect Cherry Point was Hurricane Irene in 2011 and as we all know, our coast protrudes out in the Atlantic and therefore, sits directly in the path of many hurricanes that form in the Atlantic,” said Lucas. “Cherry Point experienced some power outages with downed lines and trees and some structures were damaged.” Between the years of 1851 and 2005, North Carolina has been hit by 47 hurricanes and 12 of those were category 3 and above, according to the North Carolina Department of Public Safety. “It only takes one hurricane or tropical storm making landfall to have disastrous impacts on our communities,” said Lucas. Understanding the dangers of an approaching storm could be a fatal mistake. So it is important for families to prepare by developing a family disaster plan, gathering materials to endure the storm, knowing the location of local shelters and evacuation routes. A disaster plan is a list of procedures and actions taken before and after the time of a disastrous event which explains tasks that need to be completed. Some of the things included in the plan are how families can get to a safe place, means of communication, ways of getting back together if split apart and what to do in different situations. “Discuss your family disaster plan with all family members; make sure to include a plan for your pets, said Lucas. Personnel aboard the air station should review local and installation emergency procedures. See WEATHER page A7

Military health system reviewed Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel has ordered a comprehensive review of the Military Health System. Dr. Jonathan Woodson, the assistant secretary of defense for health affairs, will lead the review, Pentagon Press Secretary Rear Adm. John Kirby said in a statement. The review, Kirby said, will focus on access to care and an assessment of the safety and quality of health care, both in military treatment facilities and in health care that the Defense Department purchases from civilian providers. Expected to last for 90 days, the review will examine whether current access to care meets the department’s standards, Kirby said. It will also examine the safety and quality of the care provided to all DOD beneficiaries, he added. The Military Health System provides health care for more than 9.6 million beneficiaries, including active duty service members, retirees and eligible family members.

Vietnam Memorial rededicated Members of the Jacksonville, N.C., area community, including veterans, active duty service members and county residents, gathered to commemorate the rededication of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial during a ceremony at Lejeune Memorial Gardens in Jacksonville May 31. The ceremony celebrated the addition of a gazebo above a fountain in the memorial, which features glass walls inscribed with the names of the 58,229 men and women who lost their lives during the Vietnam War. Throughout the event, speakers honored the memories of those on the wall and praised Vietnam-era veterans who returned to build their lives in the wake of a conflict that divided the nation. “The glass panels are a poignant reminder of the tremendous sacrifice of the Vietnam generation,” said Col. Timothy Salmon, the commanding officer of Marine Corps Air Station New River. “(At the Vietnam Veterans Memorial) we can reflect on the past and contemplate the future.” “(The memorial’s) completion marks our tribute to those who were killed and causes us to remember all who were part of the Vietnam experience,” said Sammy Phillips, Jacksonville city mayor. The memorial provides veterans with a place in the community to remember and honor their experiences, said Emmett Salas, a retired Marine sergeant major and a guest at the ceremony. The Vietnam Veterans Memorial is neighbored by the Beirut Memorial, 9/11 World Trade Center beam, Camp Johnson and the N.C. Veterans Cemetery. Lejeune Memorial Gardens is located at Lejeune Boulevard and Montford Landing Road in Jacksonville, N.C.

Volunteers with the Navy Marine Corps Relief Society practiced self-defense techniques during a class hosted by representatives from Premier Martial Arts here, June 10. During the class, volunteers were taught how to execute self-defense techniques, the importance of being able to defend themselves and which techniques would be most useful if faced with a real threat. “The purpose of self-defense classes is to spread awareness and provide knowledge on ways people can protect themselves when a situation arises, when all they have is themselves,” said Ryuji Williams, the manager and chief instructor of Premier Martial Arts, a local martial arts organization that incorporates Krav Maga, kickboxing, submission grappling and Kali, a Filipino self-defense system, into a realistic personal protection and fitness system. “Knowing how to protect yourself and being confident no matter what situation you’re in is vital when it comes to protecting you or family members.” The volunteers learned potential life-saving moves during the period of instruction like defense techniques for a bear hug, rear choke and choke from the front. “Any one of those techniques are effective in basic situations and I feel like anyone, particularly women, would be able to use the selfdefense moves and be able to successfully get away and get help,” said Williams. Kendra K. Colon, a participant in the self-defense class and volunteer for the NMCRS, said this is the first time the volunteers have engaged in an activity of this sort. “It was great,” said Colon. “I think it was a good opportunity to learn so that we are prepared for whatever might happen.” Although Colon has not been put in a situation where she has needed to use self-defense techniques she feels this is a good opportunity for women to learn how to get out of tough situations. “You never know when you are going to be put in that type of situation so it’s always good to know basic self-defense,” said Colon.

2nd MAW Band wows audience at summer concert LANCE CPL. VICTOR A. ARRIAGA MCAS Cherry Point

The 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing Band performed their first on-base concert of the year June 11 at the Two Rivers Theater here. This is one of two occasions Cherry Point opens its doors to the public for a band concert. “I think it’s not only important for the Marines that we have these concerts, but to open it up to the community to link that bridge with us and the outside world,” said Staff Sgt. Christopher Dwyer, the enlisted conductor for the band. “It’s involvement between the base and community that helps us foster relationships with the folks outside of base.” Featuring the music of John Philip Sousa, Eric Whitacre and Ron Nelson, the band wowed audience members and played a variety of pieces including “Ghost Train,” a piece that creates the sound of a train passing through. “I think the band was generous and wondrous with their performance,” said Maryann Houston, a Havelock resident. “It’s a big difference from the Christmas concert with different music but either way, how can you not enjoy this band?” The band opened up with the “Star Spangled Banner” and performed patriotic pieces such as “America the Beautiful” and closed with the “Stars and Stripes Forever.” “We had standard wind ensemble repertoire and music you might see a college band or professional band perform,” said Dwyer. “It was really revolving around American wind music.” Each piece showcased the band’s talent and brought a bit of every musician’s sound to the public, according to Dwyer. “We have great musicians and great Marines,” said Dwyer. “Anytime we can perform for the public and provide that positive image for the Marine Corps is great.” The next concert is expected to take place near Christmas.

Marine aircrew supports refueling operations in Afghanistan CPL. CODY HAAS MARINE EXPEDITIONARY BRIGADE - AFGHANISTAN

MULTI-NATIONAL BASE COMMAND TARIN KOT, Afghanistan - Aircrew with Marine Aerial Refueler Transport Squadron 352 conducted a refueling operation from Camp Bastion, Helmand province, to Multi-National Base Command Tarin Kot, Urozgan province, Afghanistan, June 8. Troops stationed aboard bases in Afghanistan rely on large amounts of fuel for everyday tasks and operations. Tarin Kot is located approximately 111 miles from where the Marines with VMGR-352 are stationed at Camp Bastion. An experienced flight crew and thorough preflight inspections are necessary to guarantee a successful and incident free, four-hour refueling mission. In the early morning hours, the KC-130J Super Hercules was inspected by Cpl. Brendan Gagnon and Cpl. Jacob Perez, crew chiefs with VMGR-352, and verified by Sgt. Jacob Smith, a crew master with the unit. The aircrew flew aboard the Hercules, an aircraft capable of carrying 58,000 pounds of fuel. The Hercules is a tactical tanker transport aircraft that stretches more than 90 feet in length and 130 feet from wing to wing. It can resupply battle zones, serve as a direct air support center, insert ground troops and perform medical evacuation operations if needed. Upon arriving at Tarin Kot, Smith ensured the refueling process was quick and safe by planning, setting up, operating and breaking down the refueling panel to offload the fuel.

Sergeant Jacob Smith attaches a fueling hose to the refueling panel during an operation aboard Multi-National Base Command Tarin Kot, Afghanistan, June 8. During the operation, Smith, a crew master with Marine Aerial Refueler Transport Squadron 352, Regional Command (Southwest), provided needed fuel to MNBC Tarin Kot for their future operations.

“We provided intermediate refueling and rearming operations,” said Smith. Crew chiefs are responsible for ensuring the aircraft is safe to fly, troubleshooting any mechanical problems, performing maintenance and helping with aerial refueling. “The fuel will be used for emergency generator fuel as well as for constantly coming-and-going aircraft,” said Army Pfc. Dartaniel Morgan, a soldier with 16th Combat Aviation Bri-

gade, Regional Command (Southwest). The Marines with VMGR-352 are from Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, Calif. They have been operating in Helmand province and the surrounding area since arriving in Afghanistan in January. “Our basic crew chief school prepares us for any mission, anywhere,” said Perez. “I felt very pleased at how the mission went today.”

MALS-14 keeps squadrons flying LANCE CPL. JOSHUA R. HEINS MCAS CHERRY POINT

Behind the scenes of the 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing is a squadron that has recently shown their attention to detail by perfecting their most recent Commanders of Naval Air Force inspection during the last week of May. Marine Aviation Logistics Squadron 14 provides flying units with mid-level maintenance support, and keeps them supplied with necessary equipment, ordnance and fuel. The squadron is comprised of many different divisions like power lines, airframes, avionics and ordnance. Every two years, a CNAF team inspects the squadron to ensure quality assurance representatives are holding Marines accountable for abiding by the rules and regulations outlined in the Naval Aviation Maintenance Program. “The CNAF inspection team inspects both the Navy and

Marine Corps aviation squadrons for all platforms of aircraft for one week,” said Chief Warrant Officer 4 Matthew Burg, the quality assurance officer. “The inspection centers over the squadrons’ compliance with policies and programs set forth in the NAMP which guides how we govern our squadron’s aviation maintenance.” All programs graded by the team are covered in detail within the maintenance program. “The NAMP outlines every (standard operating procedure) and provides manuals for all the programs involved with the squadron,” said Sgt. Marc Thompson, a division QAR with the squadron. During the inspection, the team observed Marines to see whether standard operating procedures were being enforced. Individual Marines were selected randomly and graded on their ability to perform tasks and duties ranging from tool control to

engine maintenance. The inspection determines whether a squadron monitors themselves correctly, said Burg. The Marines working hard, training hard, maintaining proper records and maintenance skills was key to the successful inspection. “All 43 programs were marked as on track,” said Thompson. “We blew it out of the water.” Sergeant Shawn Gadsden, a work center supervisor for MALS-14 airframes division said the results of the inspection came from the hard work and discipline of the junior Marines and their confidence in their leadership’s ability to lead them to success. “Every day inside (the airframes division) we keep motivation up by holding simple competitions among the Marines,” said Gadsden. “The key to success in this job is simply the willingness to learn. If you are willing to learn and strive to be the best in this job, you can go far.”

Senior leaders, community compete at commanding officer’s golf tourney MCAS CHERRY POINT

Cherry Point’s commanding officer opened his course to air station personnel and community members for the Commanding Officer’s Spring Invitational Golf Tournament at the Sound of Freedom Golf Course June 10. Col. Chris Pappas III, commanding officer of the air station, opened by welcoming participants and spectators to the event and wishing all the teams the best of luck. Nearly 50 participants toted clubs of all sizes in bags and carts down the fairway as a shotgun start signaled the beginning of the tournament. “Just being out here with people we work with daily and

some people we may not see as often makes these tournaments enjoyable,” said Maj. Gen. Robert F. Hedelund, commanding general of the 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing. “Being on a team and encouraging each other really builds camaraderie between the military and the community. As we continue to share events like this with community members, we are building a stronger relationship and showing them that we are here for them.” Golfers pre-selected their desired foursomes for the tournament, said Jim Ferree, course manager and primary organizer of the event. Those who did not pre-register with a specified team were placed on teams with open slots. “This is the first year for this tournament, and I think the format we chose is really great because golfers have the choice to sign-up on a team or they can sign up as a single golfer and get out to meet new people for the day,” said Ferree. Players of all ages and skill-levels teed off on the 18-hole course for a chance to earn bragging rights and win one of several prizes. “We thought it would be fun to host a one-day tournament to give another chance for the community to get involved with the military and to have chance to really get to know each other on a relaxed and fun level,” said Ferree. “The social atmosphere of the event makes it a really enjoyable time. The tournament is great for people who love golf, have a competitive nature or just want to spend the day enjoying each other’s company in the sun.” The tournament was played in a mixed format. Participants played the front nine holes in a best ball format, then the back nine holes in a team super ball format. Best ball is when all four players for every team would play their ball and the team would take the lowest score on each hole. Super ball is when each person on the team tees off, chooses the best lie and all players play from that spot. “Our team decided to play in the tournament because it was a great opportunity to put a face on all of the units we work with aboard MCAS Cherry Point,” said Matthew Lindauer, tournament participant and member of Marine Aircraft Group 28. “It is constantly impressed upon us how great these events are for creating camaraderie across the station and 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing in order to accomplish all of our missions.” The top two teams won gift cards to the ProShop. Prizes were also awarded for contests throughout the tournament like the closest to the pin, longest drive, longest putt and straightest drive. After the teams sunk their last ball, they made their way out of the hot sun into Miller’s landing for an awards dinner where they cooled off and enjoyed music, food and prizes. Matthew Lindauer, Eric Forestiere, Hart Smith and Jimmy Hicks, all of MACG-28, took first place in the tournament and claimed their prize during the ceremony. “Representing MACG-28 was a great feeling, win or lose,” said Lindauer. “Winning just made the catered meal by Miller’s Landing taste that much better.”

At times the younger Marines may not be performing up to their full potential, because of the limited number

Two aviation electricians work on the top of the wing on an AV-8B Harrier while two Boeing field service representatives work on the underside of the wing during routine maintenance on the bird in the Marine Attack Squadron 542 hangar. of people available to teach them. To combat this, we have been brought in to fill the senior leadership role and allow the Marines to ask questions and learn to help achieve that wide knowledge base they want.” The representatives bring with them a complete expertise of service engineering specialties. The more than 300 representatives are spread across 183 bases and focus on efficiently preventing and resolving in-service technical difficulties, providing access to technical information and offering advice and help toward the maintenance of the Boeing-built aircraft. “I really feel like the mentor-mentee relationship we have with the guys from Boeing has been extremely beneficial to me,” said Cpl. Jarred Holman. “They have such a vast amount of knowledge and experience that none of us here have. We should all try to learn as much as we can from them so we will have the knowledge to share with our junior Marines down the road.” Holman is an aviation electrician with Marine Aviation Logistics Squadron 14 who normally fixes panels, control stick batteries and generators for AV-8B Harriers. He said since he started working with VMA-542 and FRS, he has learned the ins-and-outs of the equipment he usually repairs. He also learned how panels control work within cockpit of the aircraft and what each panel and all the different controls are used for, what they do and where everything is located. Although the demand for maintaining and fixing aircraft stays the same, Holman said. It is nice to have the extra hands and pointers from the Boeing mentors. Having the extra help makes the process of locating, assessing and fixing problems go a lot faster. “My favorite part about my job is knowing that the stuff we fix enables the aircraft to fly, which enables the Marines to do their jobs,” said Holman. “Not many people can say they are a part of something that big, it’s a great feeling.”

After the plan has been created and rehearsed, it is essential to gather supplies needed for the duration of the event. A basic emergency supply kit contains: at least a gallon of water per individual for at least three days; at least a three-day supply of non-perishable food items, and a first aid kit. Gathering materials is vital to ensure families remain calm and get through the weather. Cherry Point offers emergency shelters for relocation in an event that a resident or home is deemed unsafe during the storm. Depending upon the weather, Marines and their families may be required to use shelters offered on the installation. On base establishments used as a shelter are the Cherry Point Marine Dome and the Cherry Tree House. “Because of the potential impact on Cherry Point, the station has a very comprehensive destructive weather plan that is exercised on an annual basis,” said Grant DeHaven, a program manager with mission assurance. “The plan contains the vital procedural information needed to prepare for and recover from these storms as a command. However, the safety of personnel and families that may be within or outside the fence is of utmost importance.” DeHaven added that the safety of Cherry Point residents can only be guaranteed through the individual preparedness steps taken by each person. Hurricanes have the potential to cause great damage to any particular area. To assist Cherry Point residents prepare during this time, Cherry Point’s Marine and Family Programs will host a Hurricane and Severe Weather Seminar June 25 at Miller’s Landing. The event is open to active duty service members, retirees and spouses. In addition to the seminar, residents will have access to the Before the Storm 2014 Cherry Point Tropical Cyclone Guide, which includes information to assist with preparing for destructive weather. The guide covers preparation before, during and after the storm. Some resources Cherry Point residents can use to monitor weather reports or disturbances are the Cherry Point web page, Facebook, local TV, radio and weather radio. To stay informed during the season, visit Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point Emergency Management at http://go.usa. gov/8e8t or the MCAS Cherry Point website at http://www. cherrypoint.marines.mil.

COMMAND from page A1 came to work every day and gave it 110 percent.” Placiente is coming to the squadron from his duty as a Force Fires Coordinator with the I Marine Expeditionary Force. “I do not expect to bring any more than what previous commanders have already established here,” said Placiente. “I’m hoping that the experiences I have had both in and out of the LAAD community will benefit this battalion and its unique mission in air defense.” It will be an honor to work with some of the best Marines the Corps has, said Placiente. “I’m very thankful for Lt. Col. Cobb who made great strides and lasting impression on this battalion,” said Placiente. “I hope to continue the trend of excellence that he has set for me.”

FAMILY from page A1 overwhelmed when he found out his family was selected. The couple said it was nothing they ever expected, but appreciate the fact that the community appreciates everything they and many other service members do. “Why not volunteer?” asked Haley. “If someone else needs help and I can give it to them, it makes me feel great. I really enjoy giving back to the community. If I can make one person’s day better or make one person smile, it makes it all worth it.”

Hundreds of children, parents enjoy fourth annual Fly-In displays KEN BUDAY HALIFAX MEDIA SERVICE

Paul Schwarz sat in the pilot seat of a CH-46 helicopter, looking every bit as comfortable as a veteran aviator. The 9-year-old Newport boy looked around, put his hands on a couple of switches and knobs, and then peered out the window. “It’s a pretty cool helicopter,” he declared. “This thing served in the Vietnam War.” Something not even his grandmother standing beside him knew. Such was the knowledge and the fun of the Eastern Carolina Aviation Heritage Foundation Fly-In on Friday at the Havelock Tourist and Event Center. Hundreds of children – with their parents in tow – came out to enjoy the aircraft, displays and interactive stations that made up the fourth annual event. Connor B., 9, from New Bern, played the role of a pilot, donning the flight suit and helmet of a Marine Corps aviator. “It was a little heavy and sort of hot,” he said of the gear. Staff Sgt. Jonathon Fend, a flight equipment technician with Marine Light Attack Helicopter Squadron 269, said it’s the gear that could end up saving a pilot’s life. “It’s not cumbersome for the pilot and it doesn’t get in the way of the flight controls,” he said of the helmet, body armor and other gear that could add up to 40 or 50 pounds. “If the pilot has to egress out of the aircraft, it’s not going to get hung up on anything.” Fend said he enjoyed giving the children the chance to experience wearing some of the flight gear, and he was excited about the event, bringing his own children out. “It’s good anytime we can help the kids and show off the service,” he said. “It’s nice. I missed last year, but it’s good to get out this

year and check it out.” Tres Allen, of the Crystal Coast R/C Club from Newport, got the chance to fly some of their remote controlled planes, as rainy weather earlier in the day turned into mostly sunny skies just in time for the start of the Fly-In. “It gets the kids involved, and all the big kids,” he said of flying his planes at the event. “We’re all kids at heart.” Children went from station to station at the event. They blew up balloons and learned about high pressure and low pressure at the weather station. They put on an air mask and learned about ejection seats. They got a closeup look at an aircraft engine. They made their own paper airplanes. The event concluded with a showing of the Disney movie “Planes.” “The kids are excited and the parents seem happy to be doing something as a family,” said Tom Braaten, aviation foundation board chairman and former commanding general at Cherry Point. He said the goal of the event is to provide a fun environment in which children may also learn a thing or two about aviation through science, technology, engineering and math. “And I suspect maybe the parents are picking up a few things, too,” Braaten said. “They may be learning a few things or remembering a few things they had forgotten.” Dave Engelhard was enjoying a night off work with his grandson. He showed the young man how to throw a balsa-wood airplane. The young boy picked up the technique quickly, throwing the plane into the air and watching it do a loop before it landed at their feet. “We love this,” Dave Engelhard said. “We’re having a blast.” For more information on the Eastern Carolina Aviation Foundation, go online to www. ecaviationheritage.com.

Marines are known for their esprit de corps and working as a band of brothers. While this bond is normally formed on the field of battle, it can also be achieved in garrison. Members of Marine Wing Communications Squadron 28’s operations department demonstrated this at the Skeet Range here June 5. Once a month, the section gathers in a relaxed environment to foster unit cohesion and reinforce the warrior spirit. “The reason we are here is because warriors shoot guns, and I don’t own any golf clubs, said Maj. Kevin J. Stepp, the operations officer for MWCS-28. The range also provides a great opportunity to share knowledge and pass on leadership traits and principles, said Stepp. “The day gave us a chance to get to know each other on a level not directly associated with work, said Stepp. “All while having some fun, shooting guns and getting outside. The Marines alternated between the skills of wobble skeet and traditional skeet. In wobble skeet, competitors stand on a tower with elevated platforms and fire at targets from beneath them. In traditional skeet, participants fire in eight different positions throughout a half circle pattern at targets that appear from both the left and right. Sgt. Kristoffer Roberts, the training noncommissioned officer for the squadron, said it was his first time shooting on this range. “It was a lot of fun, said Roberts. “It’s a lot different from the
