Cherry Point’s largest squadron to welcome new commander

Cherry Point’s largest squadron is scheduled to have a change in leadership as Lt. Col. Charles J. Basham relinquishes his command to Lt. Col. Jeremy L. Gettings here today. Headquarters and Headquarters Squadron, comprised of approximately 850 Marines and Sailors, provides a variety of support roles to Cherry Point and the 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing. “We have so many Marines and Sailors doing such a diverse set of capabilities,” said Basham, an AV-8B Harrier pilot by trade. “Anything that is going on here, there is an H&HS Marine or Sailor behind it, making sure things are happening.” Sailors at the Navy Boat Docks ensuring Bombing Target 11 is serviced, Marines at the gates providing security for the station, Marines in the control tower communicating with aircraft and Marines providing fuel to those same aircraft are just a few of the roles the squadron’s service members provide. “I don’t think there is an adjective to describe it,” said Basham, speaking to the performance of the squadron during his time as commanding officer. “Phenomenal, is all I can say. The support they provided, not only to the base but also to the 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing, surpassed my expectations.” As Basham departs the squadron to join the 2nd MAW staff, he described the feeling as bittersweet. “I have thoroughly enjoyed my two years here,” said Basham. “It has been an honor of a lifetime to command this squadron.” Basham said he has three things he would pass on to every Marine and Sailor in the squadron. “Be a Marine of character … stay mentally and physically fit ... and the last thing I would tell them is, take care of the brothers and sisters to their left and right and their families at home.” Gettings, also a Harrier pilot, comes to the squadron from Marine Attack Squadron 311 out of MCAS Yuma, Az. where he served as the executive officer. “It is a great responsibility and I am looking forward to learning what each Lt. Marine Corps introduces new technology In light of the technological era that the Marine Corps is currently in, the institution is advancing in a new direction. According to Marines.mil, Marines with 1st Reconnaissance Battalion got a glimpse into the future that could mold and shape the way Marines use their equipment in an event that electricity is not available while deployed or in garrison. The Marines tested the PowerWalk Harness. The new device converts mechanical energy into electricity that could be used to power batteries radios and other equipment. The right stuff LT. CMDR. PHILIP J. PELIKAN MARINE CORPS AIR STATION CHERRY POINT COMMAND CHAPLAIN

By the time you read this, the 2014 Cherry Point Air Show will have come and gone. Air shows are amazing demonstrations not only of the capabilities of aerospace technology, but of the human spirit as well. The modern technological marvels of aircraft design and innovative ingenuity are only as good as the humans who fly them. They are extensions of our creativity, daring, bravery, resolve, and even compassionate care when they’re employed in humanitarian operations. But it took much trial and error to get where we are today. The processes involved in the development of these amazing tools of the aviator’s trade are light years beyond what they were in the early and mid-twentieth century. The pioneers of flight often put themselves in extreme danger in those early days when they climbed into unproven and completely untested experimental flying machines, took the beasts up in the roar of propeller or jet-driven clamor, pushed the limits of their bodies, and often beyond the “envelope” of the aircraft’s capabilities, and then by their skill and God’s grace, brought them back in for a safe landing “most of the time.” It was said that these test pilots, some famous like Chuck Yeager who broke the sound barrier in 1947 — but mostly unknown, had “the right stuff,” and it was they who made much of what we witnessed this past weekend possible. The methods and processes of aircraft development may have changed and have been improved in many ways, but I dare say that no matter how much our computers and simulators advance the manner in which aircraft are designed and built, the first time a human being has to climb into the cockpit, buckle-up, and put the spurs to it for her maiden flight, very few do so without at

least thinking of uttering a short prayer for divine protection and guidance — even if it’s akin to the now infamous “Shepherd’s Prayer” uttered by Cmdr. Alan Shepherd moments before he was launched atop a “Redstone” rocket to become the first American in space. Not very many people know that before I was a chaplain I was an aerospace engineer and the son of an aerospace engineer. My father knew many of the men of whom I’ve spoken from those early days who were the pioneers of supersonic flight and of space travel. He knew the “Original 7”, worked with Dr. Wernher von Braun, and was involved in the design and testing of the navigational computers that guided Neil Armstrong, “Buzz” Aldrin, and Mike Collins to the moon and back in Apollo 11. He took me to my first air show when I was a boy back in the 1950s at Edwards Air Force Base, Calif. and I remember being awed by the “Thunderbirds” and being able to climb up a ladder to peer inside the cockpit of the X-15 rocket plane. As I approach my retirement from the Navy, which will take place on Sept. 1, I’m thankful to the Lord for the privilege I’ve enjoyed for over 25 years of serving as chaplain to the men and women of the fi nest force this world has ever known — the United States Navy and Marine Corps. I may have been initially inspired by a show at an Air Force Base, but I’ll never forget that the first American in space was a naval aviator, and the first American to orbit the earth was Maj. John Glenn, United States Marine Corps. Ooh-Rah. May God bless and keep all of our aviators safe, and may God bless America. Semper Fi!

As the day comes to pay tribute to those who has honorably paved the way for service members to learn, fight and teach, the Commandant of the Marine Corps urges members to stay safe and continue to serve with pride and remain vigilant against reckless behavior, according to ALMAR 017/14. Cole D. Lemon has extra responsibilities on top of his normal duties as a Marine. “I’m currently the commanding general’s driver so I make sure that he arrives to any appointments that he has on time,” said Lemon. “On top of that, I coordinate with other commands to ensure that things go smoothly with his arrival.” Prior to being the CG’s driver, Lemon was a radar repairman with Marine Wing Headquarters Squadron 2 and found out through his command that there was an opportunity for him to become the CG’s driver. “I didn’t know exactly what the job would entail but when I found out that I was selected I was really excited,” said Lemon. “I enjoy doing new things so I was excited about trying something different.” The professional environment the job comes with is his favorite aspect of his job, according to Lemon. “I enjoy being around the people that work out here,” said Lemon. With things and people constantly moving, the environment can become challenging, he said. “Schedules and timelines are constantly changing,” said Lemon. “You always have to be on your toes trying to be a step ahead so you don’t get caught off guard.” Lemon encourages Marines that have a chance to try something new to take the opportunity with an open mind and spirit. “I would encourage Marines that if they get the opportunity to do something like this, to take it,” said Lemon. “Any chance or opportunity the Marine Corps gives you, take it even if you don’t know what it fully entails because it might just be a good experience.”

Air Show showcases each MAGTF element

ROB GOLDBERG JR.

Marines with the Marine Air-Ground Task Force ignite a controlled explosion to give air show patrons a close-up look at what the Marine Corps Special Forces are capable of. The explosion was part of a MAGTF demonstration at the 2014 Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point “Inspiration to Innovation” Air Show. MAGTFs are specifically designed for swift deployment of Marine forces by air, land or sea. During the air show, they demonstrated their broad spectrum of response options.

LANCE CPL. JOSHUA R. HEINS MCAS CHERRY POINT

The Marine Air-Ground Task Force demonstrated their capabilities at the 2014 Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point “Inspiration to Innovation” Air Show May 16-18 highlighting the Marine Corps amphibious abilities. Four core elements comprise the MAGTF. The command element, ground combat element, aviation combat element and the logistics combat element. “We tried to showcase and give everyone an idea of what the MAGTF can do,” said Andrew Kingbury, the MAGTF mission commander with the 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing. “We tried to integrate every aspect that the Marine Corps utilizes in order to win battles.” The demonstration included many different types of equipment, from aircraft like the F/A-18 Hornet, that can deploy from naval aircraft carriers to provide war-fighting functions, AV-8B Harriers and EA-6B Prowlers. It also included UH-1Y Hueys and AH-1W Super Cobras that can provide close-air and assault-support. The MV-22B Osprey transported the ground combat element of infantry Marines from Company E, 2nd Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment. In addition, the CH-53E Super Stallion dropped in a HUMVEE for ground transportation. “Hopefully, we were able to show the people who do not work with Marines on a daily basis, the amphibious ability that we have and are known for as a force of readiness,” said Kingsbury, who as the MAGTF mission commander, coordinated all the aircraft and personnel throughout the demonstration. For the average onlooker at the air show, the demonstration provided more than just a little bit of shock and awe. “We loved the speed in the show,” said Shannon Nelson, who attended the air show with his family from Walkertown N.C. “It helps us understand and appreciate what Marines do every day.” Many attendees of the show felt the same as Nelson. “I cannot even narrow down my favorite part, said Ryan Longston an attendee from Clayton, N.C. “I enjoyed the whole thing. How the announcer explained it makes me want to look into it even more.” The main point that the demonstration was attempting to portray was the ability the Marine Corps has to assist and facilitate the ground combat element, said Capt. Anthony Doukas, a MAGTF demonstration coordinator. “Everything we do is to support those rifle platoons and infantrymen fighting on the ground,” said Doukas. “We provide everything we can from transportation to assault support so they can complete their mission.” The demonstration portrayed a situation where inserting Marines by air and supporting them with air assets is the only option, according to Doukas. “This demonstration itself is a lot of fun to watch,” said Doukas. “It also reminds us, as Marines who work on these aircraft every day, why we do what we do.”

More than 140 Marines with Marine Tactical Electronic Warfare Training Squadron 1 returned to Cherry Point May 19 after supporting a training exercise in Key West, Fla. VMAQT-1’s mission is to train replacement pilots and aircrews to operate the EA-6B Prowler. During their four weeks of training at Naval Air Station Key West, the Marines prepared for Fleet Replacement Squadron Production, according to Maj. Michael Lynch, an electronic countermeasures officer with VMAQT-1.

Normally conducted at Cherry Point, FRS production provides student pilots with the ability to train and complete qualifications to become fleet pilots. However, since the weather here was not ideal for the training, the pilots received their qualifications in Key West. The squadron trained in Key West because of the good flying weather common to that area, according to lynch. “With range space and the weather, it allowed us to complete more (sorties) than we would have been able to complete because of the weather here,” said Lynch.

Black Daggers take to sky, jump over Cherry Point LANCE CPL. UNIQUE B. ROBERTS MARINE CORPS AIR STATION CHERRY POINT

The Army Special Operations Command Parachute Demonstration Team, also known as the Black Daggers, came to show how they represent their stars and stripes during the 2014 MCAS Cherry Point Air Show May 16-18. Conducting their first show of the year, the Black Daggers are a team of highly-skilled staff noncommissioned officers who perform free fall parachute demonstrations worldwide, completing an average of 1,250 practice and performance jumps every year. The team has participated in more than 10 air shows since being together, according to Army Staff Sgt. Justin B. McIntosh, an infantryman with the 75th Regiment with special duty to the USASOC. During the air show, the soldiers used single harness dual parachute systems, seven cell ram-air parachutes designed to allow a parachutist to safely jump with up to 100 pounds of equipment. The equipment helps jumpers withstand high winds, frigid temperatures and low oxygen levels at high altitudes. The team used smoke grenades, pyrotechnics and flags during their demonstration to enhance the performance during the day and night shows. “Today we had combat equipment during our piece of the air show and we had four jumpers participate,” said McIntosh. The soldiers paid tribute to active-duty service members and veterans for their dedication to the United States by flying the Prisoner of War flag alongside the American flag. The soldiers also completed a crew jump called canopy relative work with a 200 square feet American flag. “Having aero shells surplus while flying the American flag doesn’t always happen,” said Army Staff Sgt. William Wallace, a psychological operations staff noncommissioned officer assigned to Headquarters Company with USASOC. The demonstration typically happens when both aero and the Black Daggers are participating in the same air show, which is rare, according to Wallace. Four of the air shows the team has participated in have been at Cherry Point, said Wallace. “The first jump with them jumping out with the American flag was the best part of their performance,” said David J. Brown, an attendee of this year’s air show, and former solider with the 68th Chemical Company. “We all have a job to do and at the end of the day, we all support the same mission and that’s to support and defend the United States of America.” The team is looking forward to conducting more demonstrations at Cherry Point in the future.

As Faught takes command, he plans to employ the basics and reinforce lessons learned to his Marines. “Most of the things that I find to be valuable as time goes on are just reinforcing lessons learned from entry level training,” said Faught. “Basic fundamentals of what it means to be a Marine does not change.”

Bartlett flew out of Cherry Point 70 years ago in a North American Aviation patrol bomber, a naval version of the B-25, for combat in the South Pacific. While there, he flew 75 combat missions. His return flight to the air station for the air show marked a significant milestone not just in aviation history, but in the passing of the torch from an older generation to a new one, said the 90-year-old aviator.

As he flew into Cherry Point for the 2014 MCAS Cherry Point Air Show in “Panchito,” a B-25 Mitchell bomber, retired Brig. Gen. George Bartlett felt a sense of nostalgia come over him. “As a sergeant here in 1944, I served as a navigator bombardier,” said Bartlett. “It felt fantastic to fly back here again. The purpose of this is to show the kids of today what it was like during WWII to be in a plane like Panchito.” Bartlett flew out of Cherry Point 70 years ago in a North American Aviation patrol bomber, a naval version of the B-25, for combat in the South Pacific. While there, he flew 75 combat missions. His return flight to the air station for the air show marked a significant milestone not just in aviation history, but in the passing of the torch from an older generation to a new one, said the 90-year-old aviator. After the war, Bartlett went to college and spent some time in the reserves. The aviator was called back to active duty in 1950. Bartlett, an avid aircraft enthusiast was commissioned after graduating with the 5th Special Basic Course at Quantico, Va., in 1951 with 290 other mustang officers. He earned an advanced degree by attending night school while serving as a lieutenant. At the air show, Bartlett helped the Disabled American Veterans Flight Team promote Panchito and their mission of providing support and services to veterans, something he said he has been doing since meeting Panchito’s owner Larry Kelly 12 years ago.

“He contacted me and asked me if I would fly with him,” Bartlett said. “So I go to air shows with the plane and tell war stories – some of which are even true.” The WWII aviator said he loves flying Panchito and believes in the mission of the DAV organization and their aviation outreach program. “I believe this program is one of the most successful programs I’ve ever been involved in,” said Lynn May, the DAV Aviation Outreach Program media coordinator. “We not only reach out by appearing at shows and performing, we rely on the media to help us get the word out.” Founded in 1920, the 1.2 million-member non-profit charity organization was chartered by Congress in 1932 as the official voice of the nation’s wartime disabled veterans. They are committed to fulfilling the promises of men and women who served by representing them and their dependents with Department of Veterans Affairs and Department of Defense benefits, providing free rides to and from VA medical facilities and offering free grassroots advocacy and services nationwide. Bartlett and the DAV Flight Team aren’t the only ones who feel connected to the B-25 they use to promote their cause. “It has such a rich history after being used in all theaters of the war,” said May. “It is an important piece of our history and most young people don’t realize its significance. We want to keep that history alive and keep these war birds flying. We want people to come here and reminisce.”

B-25 bombers are most known for their role in the Doolittle Raid. The raid was an early American operation during WWII launched on Tokyo and other places on Honshu Island. It was the first air raid to strike the Japanese home Islands in retaliation for the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. According to May, it is not uncommon for former service members to get emotional when they see the aircraft. “They will come up to the plane and literally stand there and cry,” she said. “It is heartwarming to see that.” May said she enjoys the satisfaction of helping people that comes along with her job. She said she lives for the intimate moments she shares with veterans and their families. She recalled a fond memory of a WWII veteran she met who was having trouble getting hearing aids. The DAV was able to assist him with getting the hearing aids he needed. Her voice cracked and she fought back tears as she talked about a letter she received from his daughter. Thanks to the help he received from the DAV, he read a book with his granddaughter for the first time. “I get choked up about those kinds of stories because we hear similar stories so often,” said May. “These are people who paid the price. Some of them paid the ultimate price. We owe it to veterans to do everything we can to help them get the benefits they deserve. They earned them.”

A view from the cockpit of the B-25 Mitchell bomber “Panchito” shows patrons of the 2014 MCAS Cherry Point Air Show visiting the Disabled American Veterans Flight Team display on the flight line May 18.

North Carolina Girl Scouts dropped into Cherry Point May 13 for the annual Operation Cookie Drop. Operation Cookie Drop is a program in which local Girl Scouts deliver cookies to military personnel from Cherry Point, Fort Bragg and Seymour Johnson Air Force Base. Out of the 82,164 boxes received this year, more than 7,000 boxes of cookies were delivered to the air station for the Marines and Sailors. “It is always wonderful to see how eager our communities are to support our military troops and Girl Scouts, said Lisa Jones, chief executive officer of Girl Scouts North Carolina Coastal Pines. “We are very proud of this program and especially proud of all the Girl Scouts who have worked so hard to collect these donations. Now in its 10th year, Operation Cookie Drop has shipped more than half a million boxes of cookies to military troops.

“The Marines and Sailors who are going to benefit from these cookies are going to feel honored that the local community and Girl Scouts are acknowledging the sacrifices they make for the community and the Corps, said Sgt. Maj. Christopher G. Robinson, 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing’s sergeant major. “This is just another show of appreciation that the Girl Scouts are doing for the service members. During the drop, the service members and Girl Scouts helped unload boxes upon boxes of cookies at the Marine Wing Headquarters Squadron 2 supply building. “I feel good about helping the Marines, said Elizabeth, a Girl Scout with Troop 1938, who has been participating in the cookie drop for more than five years. “A lot of the Marines don’t have the advantage of having family out here to send them cookies, so this is one way to help them out.

Nice guys do finish first: Jamie McMurray wins Sprint All-Star Race and $1 million payday

Garry Eller for Chevrolet

Sometimes, nice guys do finish first. In Saturday night’s Sprint All-Star Race at Charlotte Motor Speedway, Jamie McMurray started on the outside of the front row for the final 10-lap run to a checkered flag and a $1 million paycheck. He drove off into the turns deeper than he had all night — maybe ever, at Charlotte — and cleared Carl Edwards, then sped away to his first All-Star victory. In Victory Lane he recounted the conversations around his breakfast table that morning between him, his wife, Christy, and their 3-year-old son, Carter, and 1-year-old daughter, Hazel. McMurray asked Carter what he was going to do that day. “He’s like, ‘Well, I’m going to probably play in my sandbox, Dad,’ and he rattled off a couple of random things that I already knew he was going to do,” McMurray said. Then Carter asked his father what he was going to do. “I was like, ‘Carter, I’m going to go race for a million dollars tonight.’” Then McMurray said Christy — who rarely brings up racing matters at the table — turned to Carter and said, ‘Carter, if Dad were to win tonight, what would you want?’” The 3-year-old said he wanted a new train set. So on national TV, McMurray turned to the camera and said, “Carter, you’re going to get a really cool train in the next few days, I promise you.” McMurray also offered a heartfelt “thank you” to his longtime sponsor, Johnny Morris

from Bass Pro Shops. “I know you’re watching, Johnny,” he said. “This is so cool, and I can’t thank you enough for your friendship and everything that you’ve done for our race team. This is an awesome day.” It wasn’t just sponsors, fans and family members happy to see McMurray back in Victory Lane. Even his fellow racers seemed happy, as third-finishing Matt Kenseth said in his post-race interview. “Really happy for Jamie,” Kenseth said. “If we can’t win, it’s always nice to see good guys win.” But there’s much more to McMurray than just being a nice guy. Among his seven points-paying Sprint Cup victories are two of NASCAR’s biggest races — the Daytona 500 and the Brickyard 400 — both of which he won in 2010. He got his first win, at Charlotte, in 2002 in his second career start, driving as a substitute for the injured Sterling Marlin. He also has eight Nationwide Series victories and one victory in the Camping World Truck Series. Among those in the NASCAR garage, McMurray’s reputation is one of being a driver

who really steps up his performance when he’s in contention to win. Veteran crew chief Tony Eury Sr. was McMurray’s crew chief for a Nationwide Series victory at Atlanta Motor Speedway in 2010, and said he liked McMurray in the closing stages of a race because he was so good if he ever got “a whiff of that checkered flag.” In the winner’s interview at Charlotte on Saturday night, McMurray’s current car owner, Chip Ganassi, said the same thing about him. “I think he’s got a little nose for the front,” Ganassi said. “When he gets a little sniff of the front there, he kind of gets calm all of a sudden and settles down; seems to like it at the front.” McMurray was able to get to the front for the final restart in the All-Star Race in large part because of the pit strategy of his rookie crew chief, Keith Rodden, who elected to have McMurray run the race’s third segment on old tires, so they could improve their average segment finish and thereby get a better starting spot for the final 10-lap dash. And his pit crew delivered when the heat was on, allowing him to restart on the outside of the front row. “For those guys to come through with an amazing stop … that’s a really good feeling to know that your entire race team is capable of winning.” It all worked out, and McMurray prevailed over Edwards, who said afterward that he was regretting some of his decisions in the closing laps. “I should have pulled up in front of Jamie going into [Turn One], but I just was reluctant to give up the bottom, and I pulled back down, and he played it perfectly and hung on my right rear quarter and got by me, and then raced me clean and really hard,” Edwards said. “That was really hard racing those few laps and he got it, so he deserves it. “I learned a lesson, but that’s a tough one to swallow.” And Carter McMurray will be getting a train set, which, it turns out, he would have gotten even if Edwards had won the AllStar Race. McMurray said he told his son, after promising him the train set if he won the All-Star Race, that “whether we win or not, you can have a new train set, either way.”

Kurt Busch geared up for double duty this weekend; to run both the Coca-Cola 600 and the Indy 500 “It was a great qualifying effort,” Busch told reporters afterward. “It’s been great all the way around. Each day has been a nice amount of progress that I’ve shown the team, and the team was ready to give me the next step, and here we are. “We’re on Row 4 of the Indianapolis 500. It felt like that was everything I could get out of the car at that moment.” He said he would have liked to have been able to stick around on Saturday and be among the elite nine that ran for the pole on Sunday, but there would have been no guarantees. “I think that would have been over-achieving,” he said. “These guys in this paddock are true competitors.” Busch is scheduled to compete in the Indy 500 on Sunday, then fly to Charlotte and run the Coca-Cola 600. If he does, he’ll be the first to do that since Robby Gordon in 2004. Tony Stewart, Busch’s teammate in NASCAR, is the only driver to complete all 1,100 miles of both races. He did that in 2001, finishing sixth at Indy and third at Charlotte.

Kurt Busch, who is planning to run both the Indianapolis 500 and the Coca-Cola 600 on Sunday, had his first round of double duty last Saturday, as he qualified at Indianapolis in the first part of the day, then flew to Charlotte Motor Speedway and competed in the Sprint All-Star Race. “It’s been an exciting day,” Busch said before hitting the track at Charlotte, where he qualified 18th and finished 11th. “It’s a lot of fun to qualify into the Indianapolis 500 my first outing.” Busch almost made the Fast Nine at Indy, but wound up just outside the elite group that ran for the pole on Sunday. He was third-fastest when he had to leave for Charlotte, and weather conditions changed after he left, leading to higher speeds. “I was hoping for a little more, but the air in the morning there is so thick — those cars have a hard time cutting through that air,” he said. “And then as the day progresses, conditions get better.” Busch returned to Indy on Sunday and qualified 12th, with a speed of 230.782 miles per hour.

Josh Wise wins 2014 All-Star Race Fan Vote thanks to the power of social media

The sport of NASCAR as a whole has been lamenting the fact that it has a difficult time attracting young fans, who seem more interested in owning a smartphone than an automobile. But the technology crowd seems to be finding NASCAR on its own, as evidenced by the stunning results of the fan voting for the final starting spot in the Sprint All-Star Race. Most assumed that the berth would go to Danica Patrick. Instead, the relatively unknown Josh Wise was picked, thanks to a surge in voting by participants on Reddit.com. The push was started several weeks back by 16-year-old Denis Pavel of Niles, Ill., who led an effort to raise funds to sponsor Wise’s car at Talladega Superspeedway through the Reddit social network and Dogecoin, a digital currency. Clint Bowyer, in congratulating Wise, admitted the process was unfamiliar to him. “First of all, I didn’t even know what Reddit was,” he said. “I think it speaks volumes. That Fan Vote is a cool thing, and for you, your community, to beat Danica out is saying something, so — good job.” Wise, who finished 18th in the Sprint Showdown and has a best finish of 20th at Talladega this season, said he, too, was trying to figure it all out. “I’m still trying to wrap my head around it, I guess,” he said. “This is huge for me and our team. Really, it started with a 16-year-old kid posting something on Reddit.com about some good runs that we had had, and for whatever reason, this huge, awesome community just got behind us, and everyone knows about them raising money to sponsor us at Talladega, and then it was on to the Fan Vote.” Wise went on to say that the vote is a positive sign for a

When Sam Hornish Jr. lost his ride with Team Penske’s Nationwide Series team at the end of 2013, he had several options, but wound up choosing a part-time gig with Joe Gibbs Racing, figuring he’d be better off driving a car capable of winning, even though his starts would be few and far between. On Sunday at Iowa Speedway in the Get to Know Newton 250, Hornish validated his decision by driving Gibbs’ No. 54 Toyota to victory in just his second start in the car this season. His first was at Talladega Superspeedway, where he won the pole and finished fifth. Hornish drives the No. 54 normally driven by Kyle Busch in the races that Busch chooses not to run. Hornish qualified on the outside pole beside Ryan Blaney, who now drives for the same Penske team that once employed Hornish. Hornish led the first lap, and he and Blaney swapped the lead several times before Hornish passed him for good, with 22 laps to go. Blaney finished second, ahead of Regan Smith, Chase Elliott and Elliott Sadler. Chase Elliott had to take a break from his schedule at Iowa on Saturday morning to fly home to Georgia and attend his high school graduation, but he came back and scored a fourth-place finish to push his points lead to two over Sadler and Smith, who are tied for second place. Another one of Gibbs’ drivers also had a win over the weekend, as Kyle Busch dominated Friday’s Camping World Truck Series race at Charlotte Motor Speedway in a Kyle Busch Motorsports entry. Busch led 130 of 134 laps in scoring his fourth win in his last five Truck starts at Charlotte, and his third in three Truck Series starts this season. Matt Crafton finished second, ahead of Brad Keselowski, John Wes Townley and Timothy Peters. Crafton now leads the points standings, with an 11-point edge over Peters. Busch said his Truck team employees — who were either on pit road or in the grandstands Friday night — deserve much of the credit for the success he’s had this season. “My guys worked really, really hard over the wintertime, building some really good chassis and some really good trucks,” he said. “It just all comes together here. It makes my job look easy, but it’s these guys behind me that do all the hard work, so I appreciate them and what all they do.” Townley’s fourth-place finish was a Truckcareer best. “I’m really happy,” he said. “I couldn’t really ask for a whole lot more. We’ll keep on trucking and go on to Dover.”

Josh Wise (center) won the 2014 All-Star Race Fan Vote. sport trying to attract a new audience. “This is kind of a big deal for our sport, I felt like, because it’s a lot of, like, young kids and people from around the world,” he said. “I’ve had the chance to interact with a lot of them, and there’s a lot of people who had never watched a NASCAR race who have now watched several, so it’s a pretty cool deal.” Wise, who drives the No. 98 Chevrolet owned by Phil Parsons, finished 15th in the All-Star Race.
