2nd MAW marks 73 years of aviation excellence SGT. T. T. PARISH MCAS CHERRY POINT

Since its activation on 10 July 1941, the Marines and Sailors of 2nd MAW have distinguished themselves in combat. From World War II to Operation Enduring Freedom, from the Balkans to the skies over Libya, 2nd MAW has earned a reputation of valiantly responding to every challenge. Built upon the legacy of Marine Corps aviation, you have upheld the finest traditions of our earliest aviators and proven you are “Second To None.” Gen. James F. Amos, Commandant of the Marine Corps Today marks the 73rd birthday of the 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing, a 73 year tradition of Marines and Sailors supporting the Fleet Marine Forces. The Marines and Sailors of 2nd MAW are always ready to answer the nation’s call, an advocate for freedom from the coast of the Carolinas. From its inception, authorized by congressional act during the simmering days before the United States joined World War II, 2nd MAW activated as Marine Air Group Two in San Diego. The initial squadrons, more than 60, helped begin the offensive against the Empire of Japan at Wake Island; they supported Marine amphibious landings from the east to west and south to north, sweeping across the Pacific in F4U Corsairs, F6F Hellcats, TBF Avengers and launched from countless U.S. Navy vessels. The aerial armada, stretching thousands of miles and island hopping from Guadalcanal and Midway to Tinian and Okinawa, ran the gauntlet through nearly four years of bloody

Department of Defense and Office of Management and Budget representatives tour a new Military Operation on Urban Terrain town at Marine Corps Outlying Field Atlantic June 25. They visited Cherry Point, and its outlying training facilities in two HH-46 Sea Knight helicopters from Marine Transport Squadron 1 to see the effects of encroachment on military training here.

Top DOD and governmental budget officials visited Cherry Point and its outlying training facilities June 25 to examine the effects of encroachment around Cherry Point facilities and to determine ways to prevent interference with training and flight operations. Representatives from the Office of the Secretary of Defense, the Office of Management and Budget, and the Council on Environmental Quality were here to get a closer look at the challenges Cherry Point faces with threats of encroachment, and to better understand how Cherry Point would use future funding to help with those challenges. Encroachment upon military installations can come in many forms, but for aviation installations the most common encroachment is civil construction near bases that leads to noise complaints and tall structure hazards to aviators. As these forms of development encroach upon bases and training areas, they reduce viable air space for realistic training of combat aviators that is not only necessary, but required by law.

The key components of the visit were tours of Bombing Target 11 on Piney Island, Marine Corps Outlying Field Atlantic and Marine Corps Auxiliary Landing Field Bogue. The goal was to give them bird’s-eye and ground-level perspectives on encroachment risks here and the importance of their support for facilities used not only by 2d Marine Aircraft Wing, but other military and Department of Homeland Security agencies in the region. Each year Congress grants the executive branch funds after receiving a budget proposal from the president. The yearly budget is prepared by OMB and affects all branches of the military. At Cherry Point, in addition to its normal operating expenses, funds are requested to help with the purchase of land or land easements in and near critical training areas through partnerships with other organizations with parallel interests, such as the protection of wetlands and other environmentally important areas. “Many of the visitors had never seen firsthand where the funds they provide go toSee EXAMINE page A9

Cherry Point Commissary donates more than 30,000 pounds to food bank LANCE CPL. GRACE L. WALADKEWICS MCAS CHERRY POINT

The Cherry Point Commissary joined local agencies early this year to donate more than 30,000 pounds supplies to feed thousands of hungry people across central and eastern North Carolina. The Commissary partnered with the Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina to bolster food bank supplies and lessen the discarding of items marked unsellable throughout the store. Unsellable products are any food products that have passed their sell by date, products that have gotten wet or whose packaging appears too unsightly for sale, and cleaning supplies that are broken or some of the contents have spilled out. Other products deemed unsellable include some pet items, dented cans and holiday specific items. The Cherry Point Commissary established a relationship with the Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina in February after a furlough of commissary employees led to tons of good food going into the local landfill because it passed its “sell-by” date or had dam-

aged packaging. In response to this, Headquarters U.S. Marine Corps and the Defense Commissary Agency began planning to make use of the items. Under the new plan, the Cherry Point Commissary donates food to the New Bern Branch of the Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina to benefit more than 70 food bank partner agencies like food pantries, shelters and soup kitchens across the region. “It is really a win-win relationship between the commissary and the food banks,” said Phyllis Black, director of the commissary here. “We are helping to feed thousands with food that would ordinarily go into a landfill.” Donated food is still safe to consume but not in good enough condition for sale. As long as the inner packaging of unsellable items is not compromised, the item can be donated to citizens in need, said Black. “Before the food can be picked up by the food bank and distributed to those in need, the military food inspectors are responsible for inspecting the food to determine if it is still safe, edible and can be given away,” said Black. Once the food is inspected at the commis-

Caslin, coordinator of marketing and public relations with the Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina. “No one goes hungry in central and eastern North Carolina. That’s our mission and it takes partnerships such as those with Cherry Point, retail partners, corporate partners and volunteers to ensure there is a strong safety net in place for those who need it.” Once the food is delivered to the food bank’s main warehouse in Raleigh, N.C., it is inspected again by food bank volunteers to ensure the product is still edible or useable. The warehouse then distributes usable items to food banks and charitable services in the community. The Cherry Point Commissary supports food banks across 34 North Carolina counties. The counties are broken up into six branches that collectively serve more than 3.2 million people annually. “We as a team really love to get involved and

2nd MAW leadership ensures readiness In 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing’s ongoing effort to continually assess unit readiness and force preservation, Maj. Gen. Robert F. Hedelund, 2nd MAW commanding general, ordered a urinalysis of the entire aircraft wing immediately following the Independence Day holiday liberty period. “2nd MAW’s commitment to adhering to the Commandant’s urinalysis testing policy and zero tolerance for substance abuse is exemplified in this effort,” said Sgt. Maj. Christopher G. Robinson, the aircraft wing’s senior enlisted advisor. “Conducting a command urinalysis is not only a requirement; it also serves as a deterrent to those who may be inclined to use any illegal drug or substance. The use of Illegal substances compromises safety and degrades readiness in any organization.”

Special purpose MAGTF sets sail aboard USS America The newest U.S. Navy amphibious assault ship departed Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, Calif. Monday. A contingent of Marines from Special-Purpose Marine AirGround Task Force Southern Command sailed with the USS America (LHA-6), on a voyage slated to last several months with stops in several South American ports. The inaugural trip will test the new America-class amphibious assault ship’s capabilities at sea. The Americaclass of naval vessels feature extended hangars and flight decks and are capable of supporting operations with both the MV-22B Osprey and F-35B Joint Strike Fighter. Marines routinely deploy about amphibious assault ships as part of Marine expeditionary units and other MAGTfs.

Marine Tactical Electronic Warfare Squadron 2 celebrated its 39th anniversary during a semiformal ceremony here July 1. Marines from the squadron gathered to reflect on the history of the Marine Corps’ oldest Marine tactical electronic warfare squadron, marking the occasion with a cakecutting ceremony and a barbecue. The squadron activated as Marine Composite Reconnaissance Squadron 2 in 1955 to provide electronic and photo reconnaissance for Marine Air Ground Task Force commanders and governing authorities. While the name has changed several times, the mission of the squadron remains the same: to conduct airborne electronic warfare under all weather conditions during expeditionary or joint operations. “Our history goes back as far as 1955 when VMCJ-2 was created. It was a composite squadron that conducted electronic reconnaissance and photographic reconnaissance,” said Lt. Col. Robert M. Kudelko, the squadron’s commanding officer. “Eventually, over the years as platforms have changed, we were designated as VMAQ-2 on July 1, 1975, for the primary mission of airborne electronic attack.” VMAQ-2 was the only Marine tactical electronic warfare squadron in the Marine Corps for nearly 17 years, according to Kudelko. “The highest award is the presidential unit citation for supporting Operation Iraqi Freedom back in 2003,” said Kudelko. “The most recent award that we have been awarded was a Navy Marine Corps Commendation award for our operations in Afghanistan in 2010.”

The history and lineage of the squadron is important to all the Marines in the Squadron and a legacy the current members are proud to carry, according to Kudelko. “It’s important for the Marines to know their history for the same reason that we believe it’s important for the Marine Corps to know its history,” said Kudelko. “We have to understand the reputation that we have as a unit, the hard work and dedication that has come from the Marines before us and make it our duty to live up to those expectations so that we can have pride in being one of the

most recognized Marine electronic warfare squadrons.” As a member of the squadron, Cpl. Anthony J. Clate, a fixed-wing aircraft airframe mechanic, feels it’s his duty to live up to the reputation of the squadron and the Marines who built it. “There’s so much history; you have to be proud of the squadron,” said Clate. “We have to continuously try to keep up with the Marines that came before us because it is their legacy that we have to carry on as we create our own.”

Members of Marine Air Support Squadron 1 celebrated the unit’s 71st birthday here July 1. MASS-1 activated July 1, 1943 as Headquarters and Service Squadron, 1st Marine Air Warning Group, 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing at Cherry Point, and since has been re-designated numerous times. “We have changed our name quite a bit and have even changed who we fall under quite a bit,” said Sgt. Maj. Monroe C. Boykin, the squadron’s sergeant major. “One thing remains the same though, we continue to provide air support and we’ve done that and have been combat proven throughout the years. What that says is that what the Marines are doing is extremely important and that we should continue what we have done.” The squadron of more than 300 Marines has a history of deployments and relief efforts and received the Presidential Unit Citation for its contributions to Operation Iraqi Freedom, according to Lt. Col. AnDroy D. Senegar, the squadron’s commanding officer. “It is days like this that should affirm your pride and your joy of being a United States Marine and your pride of being a MASS-1 Chieftain,” Senegar told the Marines of the squadron. “We observe our birthday so that we can ensure

that those who have come before us, and our proud heritage we have in this unit, are observed and we know that if we take care of things on our side, then we can carry that tradition on.” During the ceremony, the squadron formed to re-affix its battle streamers on the unit’s colors, signifying the awards and citations earned by previous mem-

bers of the squadron. “The importance of re-affixing the streamers is to reaffirm what we have done and the blood that was shed for our great institution,” said Senegar. “It is also to remind the Marines that any time or any place across the world, Marines of MASS-1 have been there doing our job to support the Marine Corps.”

MOREHEAD CITY, N.C. - Fifteen Marines and Sailors with the Cherry Point Single Marine Program joined approximately 75 rotary club and community members to package meals during a baseball game at Big Rock Stadium in Morehead City, June 26. The volunteers packed, weighed and sealed bags of food to help feed more than 10,000 undernourished people through a program called Stop Hunger Now. All hands worked diligently to ensure all bags were properly filled, weighed and packaged. Stop Hunger Now is a meal packaging program driven by community members and volunteers who package dehydrated, highly nutritious meals of rice, soy, vegetables, flavorings and essential vitamins and minerals to send to developing countries around the world. “Each bag of food is enough to feed six people,” said Chris Singleton, the eastern North Carolina program manager of Stop Hunger Now. “The volunteers put together enough packages to feed 10,158, and they did it in just 1 hour and 17 minutes, which is amazing.” The completed meals are shipped to clinics, schools, orphanages and areas where crisis relief efforts are needed. “I’m blessed twice knowing that hungry people will eat, and

by seeing good people excited, having good fellowship and working together to stop hunger,” said Singleton. “It is really beneficial for both the service members and the community when they come together for a good cause like this. Both have lots to offer each other and it offers both an opportunity to meet people and really experience the community they all live in.” Passersby could hear the sounds of volunteers speaking encouraging words to one another and calling for supplies from every part of the tent, the soft patter of dried grains being poured, the thud of storage bins filled with packaged meals hitting the ground and the sound of cheers as a brass gong rang through the tent, marking every 1,000 meals. The primary goal of the meal-packaging program is to support feeding programs in third-world countries, said Singleton. “We are all a part of the community,” said Sgt. Bryan Brezina, an automotive organizational mechanic with Combat Logistics Company 21. “We get the benefits of knowing we helped someone in need by volunteering our time.” “Being involved in Stop Hunger Now, helping to feed so many people, is a truly rewarding experience for me,” said Brezina. “All it took was a little more than an hour of us working together to accomplish something so big. I’m really glad I came out to volunteer for this event, and I am looking forward to the next time I can be involved.”

MWSS-274 Marines finish bulk fuel bladder removal aboard Camp Bastion CPL. CODY HAAS MARINE EXPEDITIONARY BRIGADE - AFGHANISTAN

CAMP BASTION, Afghanistan – Marines with Marine Wing Support Squadron 274 removed an empty 210,000-gallon fuel bladder just after sunrise aboard Camp Bastion, Afghanistan, June 28. “This morning we took out an empty 210,000gallon fuel bladder,” said Cpl. Anthony Casares, a wrecker operator with MWSS-274. “We used a (Logistics Vehicle System Replacement MKR15) wrecker, which is typically used for towing vehicles out of a ditch and getting them back in the fight, but it can be useful for other things as well. We assist bulk fuel Marines and do a lot of cross-training with them for improved efficiency on the job.” The bulk fuel site at Camp Bastion was contracted by the Army for more than 20,000 troops Camp Bastion once supported at the height of Operation Enduring Freedom, and was partially operated by civilian contractors for constant aircraft refueling capability. The system was so large that contractors were hired and trained to operate the fuel system with supervision and training from the Marines. The fuel farm once held more than 1.6 million gallons of fuel for operations taking place in Helmand province and the surrounding area. In three hours, more than 15 Marines with MWSS-274 and 15 contractors removed the eight non-Marine owned bulk fuel bladders at the bulk fuel site. With these bladders removed, the remaining six 50,000-gallon fuel bladders are completely Marine Corps owned and operated. “The Marines here are very dedicated and hardworking individuals,” said Sgt. Andrew Sewell, a bulk fuel specialist with MWSS-274. “Once we remove the last of the bulk fuel bladders, this will be a completely Marine-run operation at the flight line at Bastion.” Bulk fuel Marines verify that the fuel on hand is safe for use and tested daily for water and sediment to ensure it is the best fuel going into aircraft at all times, said Sewell. “Every morning we walk along each bladder and inspect it for tears or punctures and check the hoses to make sure everything is good to go,” Sewell said. The fuel is used for vehicles, aircraft and equipment vital for flight line support. Bulk fuel Marines with MWSS-274 deployed to Afghanistan in March from Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point. They will take on full responsibility of refueling efforts for the Camp Bastion flightline for the remainder of their deployment.

Marines with the support squadron provide all essential aviation ground support requirements for Marine Aircraft Group 14 and all supporting or attached elements. “The event is also a way for senior leader-

ship to show the Marines a little appreciation for the hard work they consistently put in,” said Callahan. Senior Marines within the squadron hope that the event will recharge the Marines and get them pumped up for squadron exercises and operations that they are scheduled to support in the near future. Corporal Aderinola H. Osifeso, a radio operator with MWSS-271 and the event’s assistant coordinator, felt as though the event rejuvenated the Marines morale. “It gives the junior Marines a chance to see their staff and leadership in action,” said Osifeso. “The event also encourages positive relationships within the squadron that not only improves our success by strengthening unit cohesion, but it makes us a better family.” As in any competition, there is always one winner. Headquarters and Service Company won the Workhorse trophy by earning 58 points in the games. “The Marines worked hard and it was a great game,” said Callahan. “My first day as the company commander and the Marines brought the trophy home.”

critical to mission accomplishment. “It’s important that we conduct this type of training because pilots have to communicate with units on the ground to know where they are going and what to expect when they get there,” said Sgt. Christopher Johnson, a crew chief with HMH-465. “When you have everybody communicating with each other, it’s easy to get confused, but this training allows us to know what to expect when a real-life situation arises.” To make the training more realistic, simulated casualties were extracted from the area and returned to the command post. After taking control of the objective, the Marines called for extraction to return back to the command post. “I think it went great,” said Capt. EXAMINE from page A1

2NDMAW from page A1 Officer for Cherry Point, saw this as an opportunity to better demonstrate how tall towers and potential wind farms may present an issue in the coming years. “Taller structures cut into our airspace, forcing the pilots to fly at higher attitudes and making their training less realistic,” said Harris. The visitors also touched down at Atlantic Field to tour the new Military Operation on Urban Terrain facility and to learn more about the hands-on training opportunities currently available at Cherry Point. “Seeing structures like the MOUT town was a new experience for most of the visitors,” said Harris. “Without giving them an aerial perspective or bringing them down and physically touring structures, I don’t think the message we were trying to pass would have been as effective.” That message, ultimately, was that Cherry Point makes great use of REPI funding to benefit the country and Eastern North Carolina by continuing to provide the American warfighter with critical training capabilities, and through the effective management of environmentally important land.

DONATION from page A1 help out when needed,” said Black. “It gives me a warm-and-fuzzy feeling to know we are helping hungry people eat good food.” Last fiscal year, the New Bern Branch food bank distributed more than 1.7 million pounds of food,

enough to provide nearly 1.5 million meals for citizens who struggle to put food on the table, according to Caslin. “We would not be able to do this without all of our wonderful donors and volunteers,” said Caslin.

here in 1946. The Marines and Sailors of the wing developed a routine of refining the principles of modern air-to-ground combat efficiency in the years following WWII, training Marine pilots and aircrew service over the Korean Peninsula. The training at Cherry Point proved the hard lessons of World War II and the concepts of Marine Corps maneuver warfare. The mass of men and machines that helped secure the Pacific were a living example of the close partnership between Marine pilots in the air and infantrymen on the ground. This model, the concepts of dynamic warfighting, helped form the basis of doctrine passed on to pilots and crew during the Korean War to support the Marine divisions fighting at the Frozen Chosin and Pusan Perimeter. Though never assuming command of the airspace during the Korean War or Vietnam, 2nd MAW played a vital role in preparing pilots and aircrew for service in the skies during both conflicts. The Marines who trained in the skies over eastern North Carolina took the spirit of the wing’s motto, “Second to None,” into battle, helping turn back the tide of Communism during the turbulent years between 1950 and the mid-1970s. Thousands of flying leathernecks passed through Cherry Point during those years, learning the tools of their trade and honing their skills before going overseas. The changing platforms of Marine air power marked a passage from propellers and leather helmets to jet engines and precision-guided bombs. The changing technologies helped prepare 2nd MAW for an advanced age of expeditionary warfare and

a role tailor-made for Marine aviation. The jet age arrived on the heels of WWII, grew into adolescence during Korea, and even more robust through the ensuing years. After Vietnam, Marine aviation epitomized the cutting edge of America’s tip of the spear. 2nd MAW, indeed all Marine aviation, evolved and grew into an unmatched aerial juggernaut, able to project “shock and awe” from either land or sea to anywhere in the world in a matter of days, if not hours. The well-oiled machine, fueled by a modern, professional all-volunteer force of Marines, provided the requisite firepower to overwhelm America’s enemies during the Gulf War in the early 1990s and, a decade later, in Afghanistan and Iraq. While technology has changed the conduct of warfare and the capabilities 2nd MAW brings to the fight, the wing stands ready, whether aboard a Dock Landing Ship in support of a Marine Expeditionary Unit or covering the skies as part of a Special MAGTF. The wing brings a vast array of capabilities to the nation’s forces, whether dropping Joint Direct Attack Munitions from an FA-18 over Fallujah or delivering food and water with the MV-22B Osprey during humanitarian assistance and disaster relief. No matter where or when, no matter the clime or place, no matter the cost or sacrifice, the Marines and Sailors of 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing stand ready to answer threats to American interests and provide relief for the world’s oppressed. They stand ready for employment across the globe as part of America’s 9-1-1 force, a lineage 73-years in the making.

ward supporting the Readiness and Environmental Protection Integration program for military installations,” said Carmen A. Lombardo, the natural resources manager for Cherry Point. “Our plan was to give them that experience.” Col. Chris Pappas III, commanding officer for MCAS Cherry Point, began the visit with a presentation about current and future plans for Cherry Point and its auxiliary training facilities. Next, the visitors and staff from the air station took flight in HH-46 Sea Knights from Marine Transport Squadron 1 to view the area from the air. “Flying this diverse group of officials around our military installations provided for a better understanding of how funds are used to prevent encroachment here,” said Lombardo. The aerial view offered the visitors another perspective of the different threats contributing to encroachment around the military area of operations, said Lombardo. “We flew the same field carrier landing pattern that aircraft use around Bogue Field,” said Lombardo. “This opened their eyes to how close residences are built around the installation.” Tyler B. Harris, the Community Plans & Liaison
