2nd MAW squadrons earn MCAA awards

MWHS-2 bids Grade farewell, welcomes Foster LANCE CPL. VICTOR A. ARRIAGA MCAS CHERRY POINT

Marine Wing Headquarters Squadron 2 welcomed a new sergeant major during a relief and appointment ceremony at Cherry Point, April 16. Sgt. Maj. Scott D. Grade relinquished his post as MWHS-2’s sergeant major to Sgt. Maj. Thomas Foster. “Being MWHS-2’s sergeant major has probably been one of the most rewarding jobs I’ve had since I’ve been a sergeant major,” said Grade. “The Marines and Sailors are awesome, they do outstanding things everyday and they are the backbone of making (2nd Marine Aircraft Wing) fly. They are professionals all the time.” Grade, who served as the squadron’s senior enlisted advisor for 14 months and will assume his new post at Marine Air Control Group 28, but not before saying a few words about Foster. “MWHS-2 is going to get an outstanding sergeant major,” said Grade. “I’ve known him as the sergeant major for the communications squadron and I’m sure he will treat everyday like it is his last because there is always a new adventure with this squadron.” Foster was previously the sergeant major of Marine Wing Communications Squadron 28 and looks forward to leading MWHS-2. “I’ve got big shoes to fill following sergeant major Grade, but I am extremely honored to take over at the squadron because of the caliber of the Marines who are here,” said Foster. “It’s an honor to be in the same squadron as the Marines who make MWHS-2 the way it is.”

Several squadrons with the 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing received Marine Corps Aviation Association Awards for their actions in 2013. The MCAA hosts the largest military aviation awards program, recognizing the most significant contributors in 27

categories, incorporating every facet of aviation from fixed-wing and rotor-wing assets to avionics and ordnance. The first Alfred A. Cunningham Award, named in honor of the “Father of Marine Corps Aviation,” was presented to the Marine Aviator of the Year, Retired Lt. Col. John H. Glenn Jr., in 1962. “It is a big deal when you win an MCAA

award,” said Col. Robert Sofge, the commanding officer of Marine Aircraft Group 14. “Everybody knows what they are. Everyone wants to win. It speaks volumes about the efforts on the line. Everyone is working hard, but to receive the recognition is particularly sweet.” See MCAA page A7

The land covered by Cherry Point, and the water surrounding it, serve as a habitat for many species of migratory birds and as a nursery for coastal shore birds and marine life. Potter and his team conducted two pilot studies during 2013 to help restore some of the land and groundwater at Cherry Point. A pilot study is a scaled down version of a large technology system to assess the feasibility of restoration technologies and concepts. If proven effective during a pilot study, the department can implement a fullscale project, said Jeff Christopher, the Restoration and Recycling Division supervisor with the department. “When we conduct these kinds of studies, it is a team process,” said Christopher. “We don’t move forward until the Navy, United States Environmental Protection Agency and State are all on the same page, and that works out better in the end.” During 2013, the Environmental Affairs Department conducted several pilot studies, including a Permeable Reactive Barrier and enhanced biological remediation studies. A ground water plume is ground water contaminated with solvents. To help solve the problem, Potter and his team used a permeable reactive barrier, or a large trench, containing neutralizing agents that react with contaminated water, removing pollutants. “We like to think of it as a filter, but instead of filtering See ENVIRONMENTAL page A7

Sexual Assault Prevention, three questions How does sexual assault affect an individual Marine and their unit?

USMC adolescent immunizations All children enrolled in any USMC Chld Development programs are required to have documentation of current age appropriate immunizations per reccomendations from the American Academy of Pediatrics and The Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices. For active participation in the program, adolescents are required to meet all requirements. If immunization requirements are not met due to a medical contradiction, a statement from the child’s health-care provider documenting the reason for exemption must be on file. If the child is not immunized due to religious beliefs, a waiver signed by the parents must be kept in the participants file. For participants who are enrolled in local public school systems which require proof of vaccinations are excluded from the requirement to provide documentation to the USMC programs. All chidren six months and older are required to receive the influenza vaccine, unless prior documentation has been provided. If age appropriate immunizations have not been administered parents or guardian must show evidence of an appointment for immunizations within one month of program enrollment. In addition, all child, youth and teen program professionals, regular volunteers and family child care providers are required to obtain age-appropriate immunizations against communicable diseases to include the influenza vaccine. For more information, see MARADMIN 192/14 or visit, www.CDC.GOV/VACCINES/HCP/ACIP-RECS/INDEX. HTML.

Marine Corps Advertising Casting Call The 2014 Marine Corps Recruiting Command Advertising Casting Tour will be visiting Camp Lejeune at the Hadnot Point Marine Mart May 1, the Main Exchange at New River May 2, and the Main Exchange at Camp Lejeune May 3. MCRC is looking for Marines of all ranks, military occupational specialties, ethnicities, gender and backgrounds who will represent the Corps in advertising initiatives such as television, web campaigns, print material, social media and community engagement events. On-site casting will be held at various Marine Corps installations as a way of pre-screening Marines who are interested in participating in advertising projects. Once a Marine is selected by MCRD, a Naval message will be released via AMHS and commands will be contacted with further instructions. Marines interested in applications should visit the MCRD advertising website and fill out the pre-screening worksheet and attach two photos in accordance with the instructions. For more information or to apply visit www.MCRD.Marines.Mil/Casting or see MARADMIN 181/14.

It swiftly infiltrates our morale, effectiveness and efficiency to perform the duties expected of us. In short, crimes of any nature are hypocritical of what we believe in and adversely stain the image of what we represent.

What can a Marine do if he or she is sexually assaulted? There are a plethora of factors in place to assist victims of sexual assault and harassment. For starters, the victims should report the incident (un)restricted and pursue assistance from the Sexual Assault Response Coordinator (SARC) or a Victim Advocate (UVA-uniformed; VA-Civilian). All sexual crimes are different, but always result in the victim feeling helpless and lost. The SARC and/or VA is there to assist in the process of recovery for the victim and the pursuit of justice on the criminals involved.

Why is sexual assault prevention so important to the Marine Corps? Sexual assault prevention is vital to the successful growth of our Corps. The values instilled in us and its application are what sets us apart and allows us to be what the world needs us to be, Lance Cpl. David O. Ortiz is a 21-year-old chemical day or night. This time of year takes me back to the days before I ever thought about joining the military. Some many years ago while I was still living at home with my parents, my dear mother would make sure I had a brand new outfit every year to wear for Easter Sunday church service. This was one of very few occasions I could expect to be dressed in my best. If we went to grandma’s church for Easter service, well let’s just say that all of the plans I had for Sunday afternoon were cancelled. Fast forward 25 years and I am still in church on Easter Sunday, though not nearly for as many hours, continuing the tradition of the Christian faith in both the Catholic and Protestant community. This article was prepared for those unfamiliar with the origin of Easter in mind. The observance of Easter is rooted in Christianity and is the celebration of

the central event on which the Christian faith is built. What is this central event? It is the resurrection of Jesus Christ as recorded in the Holy Scriptures. You cannot trace the historical lines to the origin of Christianity without running into the Biblical account of the resurrection. In the first four books of the New Testament, known as the synoptic Gospels, the story is told of Jesus and his immaculate conception (being born of a virgin mother) and that he lived his entire life blameless and without sin. Then we read of his tragic end by way of severe beating, flogging, whipping, and ultimately hung on a cross to die. After his death he was laid to rest in a tomb on a Friday where he would spend three days in the grave. And then we’re told that on early Sunday morning, Jesus got up out of the grave never to experience death again. Since this time, See CHAPLAIN page A7

At Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, N.C., Marines support the mission of the 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing by training and ultimately providing support to deployed Marines. As a drafter and surveyor, Lance Cpl. Marcus D. Wuori goes on field operations and collects information by observing the land. Wuori assists combat engineers in conducting tasks set by their commanders or platoon sergeants, to fulfill the mission of Marine Wing Support Squadron 271. “When we go on a field operation, I am one of the first ones to go out there and see the land that we are going to reconstruct,” said Wuori. “I get to basically survey the land that we are doing the field operation on.” Being the first individual to observe the land, Wuori has to give the combat engineers a clear assessment of what needs to be done and provide possible strategies and techniques for getting the job completed. A task like his requires great responsibility and providing this type of assistance to fellow Marines is rewarding, according to Wouri. Although he likes to be the first on the scene, getting a clear assessment of the terrain on the Toughbook, using both the Trimble R8 and Trimble TSC2, is a challenge. The Trimble R8 and Trimble TSC2 are devices that work hand-in-hand to provide drafters and surveyors with a precise elevation, latitude and longitude point for a specific portion of land. The hardest part of the job is surveying the land and drafting an exact replica of the reconstruction site for combat engineers to work from, according to Wuori. Like every job across the Marine Corps, Wuori’s job requires him to become proficient in his MOS in order to provide support for 2nd MAW. “We all depend on one another,” said Wuori. “It is never just a single individual doing the work, it is all of us.”

Marines HITT the field to support heroes

Marines are known for their strength and skill, and are recognized by the country’s citizens as America’s expeditionary force in readiness. As the nation’s first line of defense, Marines have a huge load to carry to support the citizens as well as their brothers and sisters fighting beside them. Marine Air Control Squadron 2 hosted its first HITT for Heroes event April 11 at Cherry Point with a goal of supporting local Marines and Sailors wounded and injured in combat. High Intensity Tactical Training, or HITT, is a program designed to enhance operational fitness levels and optimize combat readiness and resilience for Marines.

Camp Lejeune is home to the Wounded Warrior Battalion East. The mission of Wounded Warrior Bn. is taking care of wounded, ill and injured Marines and their families as they proceed through the Integrated Disability Evaluation System process. Marines hear about those who are physically injured, emotionally scarred and forever in recovery, but it is a hard concept to understand if you have never been there or talked to some of these wounded warriors, according to Cpl. Kristi M. Mitchell, an intelligence specialist with MACS-2. “The purpose of HITT for Heroes is to raise funds for the Wounded Warrior Bn.,” said Mitchell, coordinator of the HITT for Heroes event with MACS-2. “The money we raised will be used for future events to rehabilitate and boost morale (at the bat-

talion).” Nearly 150 service members and civilians showed up for the event. Participants helped collect more than $1,100 to support the mission of Wounded Warrior Bn. East. “It was awesome to see all the participants out on the field, knowing that all of those Marines are there to support our brothers and sisters fighting their own battle,” said Mitchell. HITT is a fast-paced circuit exercise workout combining a variety of exercises to improve a Marine’s combat readiness. Participants completed each exercise station in groups of five, completing the circuit twice. Sergeant Maj. Benjamin L. Pangborn, the air station’s sergeant major, said the event showed participants that Marines

are Marines first and always look out for one another. HITT for Heroes gave the participants a chance to put that principle into action, according to Pangborn. “I hope the Marines got out of this that the Marine Corps is a family and it’s about pushing each other,” said Pangborn. “It does not matter what your (military occupational specialty) is, you’re still a Marine, you’re still part of a team. That is what (HITT for Heroes) is, a team event for a good cause. “Overall this event has been fantastic,” said Pangborn. “The Marines have been motivated, they’ve been fun to talk with and workout with, and share an afternoon of what Marines do - and that’s taking care of each other.”

The squadron has been an integral part of Kaneohe Bay operations and the Asia-Pacific region throughout its two years of service aboard the station. Though the unit is rarely at full capacity and often stretched thin with personnel, HMLA-357 still manages to complete its required annual training, flight training and aircraft inspections as well as participate in various exercises and deployments. “With the Marine Corps beginning to shift its focus back to the west, we’re going to be busy with plenty of training and operations,” Desbois explained. “’Scarface’ has only been a part of (Kaneohe Bay) for a couple of years, but I think we’ve already proven we’re a vital asset in the Pacific.”

MARINE CORPS AIR STATION KANEOHE BAY, Hawaii – Marines and Sailors with Marine Light Attack Helicopter Squadron 367 maintain a busy workload week in and week out in Hangar 101 at Marine Corps Air Station Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii. The squadron’s mission is to maintain each aircraft, complete assigned missions, maintain force readiness and be prepared to deploy at a moment’s notice. HMLA-367 is equipped with two types of helicopters, the AH-1W Super Cobra and UH-1Y Huey. Both aircraft are equipped with weapons from the nose to the tail, making the squadron a lethal fighting force in the air. “Hueys are amazing machines,” said Lance Cpl. Killian Desbois, a Huey crew chief with HMLA-367. “While they’re primarily a utility helicopter, they provide great support with close ground operations. We can

land and insert a small team of Marines on the battlefield, take off and cover them with air support.” Although pilots are the ones flying the aircraft, they need someone to watch their back and ensure the aircraft runs as smooth as possible. That’s where the crew chiefs come in. Every flight is important, so the crew chiefs inspect the entire aircraft before powering up and taking off. “As crew chiefs, the most important thing we do is serve the pilots when we’re in the air,” said Lance Cpl. Keith McLaughlin, a Huey crew chief with the squadron. “When we’re not flying or getting ready to fly, we assist the pilots with the inspection and maintenance of each aircraft. It’s our job to make sure everything is ready before takeoff so there aren’t any unexpected problems when we get in the air.” As the pilots and crew chiefs launch from the flight line in their aircraft, maintenance Marines stay

Marines improve motorcycle skills, increase safety LANCE CPL. UNIQUE B. ROBERTS MCAS CHERRY POINT

As the sun starts to shine and the cold weather starts to drift away, motorcycle riders gear up and start putting rubber to the pavement. The want to ride and have fun are at an all-time high during the hot months, and the Marine Corps aims to lower the number of motorcycle related incidents through awareness and repetition by getting Marines engaged in interactive riding classes. Motorcycle riders from, three North Carolina Marine Corps installations, Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, Marine Corps Air Station New River and Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, brought bikes of all makes and models to Cherry Point’s taxiway F to participate in the Ad-

vanced Rider Track Day April 13. During the course, advanced riders refreshed their basic motorcycle controls and were taught more advanced techniques such as steering, braking, throttle control and lean angle control. The techniques taught during the course are some of the most used maneuvers during every day riding. “The purpose of the course is to increase the awareness of their motorcycle’s limits and their personal limits, ultimately increasing their confidence and safety,” said Ron Farris, the Marine Corps Installations East traffic safety manager. While attending the course, Marines are actively learning both in a classroom setting and on their bikes. “There is classroom instruction and skills observation during the on-range

practical application portion, which includes setting a proper entry speed, not to slow or fast, proper application of throttle control in a turn, and not applying throttle concurrent with lean angle,” said Farris. Although ARTD is not a mandatory class, Marines who are considering buying a motorcycle of any type must take basic courses on motorcycle safety, awareness and become a part of their units motorcycle mentorship program. “All Marines must take the Basic Rider Course (BRC) as well as either the Basic Rider Course 2, for non-sport bike riders, or the Advanced Riders Course,” said Michael P. Granger, the safety and standardization directorate with Cherry Point. “The BRC2 or ARC should be taken within 120 days of completing the BRC. Marines should consider signing up for these

courses as early as possible to avoid waiting lists.” During ARTD, riders go through a structured syllabus that increases the safety level during the course and allows the riders to perform maneuvers. “Each time I come to these courses I learn something new,” said Sgt. Andrew P. Rodriguez, the career planner with Headquarters and Service Battery, 2nd Low Altitude Air Defense Battalion. “I have improved a lot since coming to these courses, and I recommend any motorcycle rider to take part in them.” For more information regarding Advanced Rider Track Day, contact Ron Farris at ronald.m.farris@usmc.mil.

Wounded warriors prevail through perseverance, dedication

Cpl. Benjamin Latham, a Marine from Wounded Warrior Battalion East and Light Armored Vehicle Crewman with 2nd Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion, 2nd Marine Division, swims at the Marine Corps Trials recently held aboard Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton. Wounded Warriors from around the world competed in events at the trials.

MARINE CORPS BASE CAMP LEJEUNE

MARINE CORPS BASE CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. – When Cpl. Benjamin Latham first arrived at Wounded Warrior Battalion East, he couldn’t walk or talk, today he holds three gold medals from the 2014 Marine Corps Trials at Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, Calif., held last month. Two Camp Lejeune Wounded Warriors, Latham and Cpl. Alan Melick, were awarded medals in the trials. However, the trials were not just competitions to the Marines, they were a crucial step in their recovery process. “The Marine Corps Trials is an event for wounded, ill and injured Marines to compete in sporting events,” said Latham, a Wounded Warrior and light armored vehicle crewman with 2nd Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion. “They can compete and prove to themselves that their disabilities don’t define them.” Latham competed in swimming and cycling competitions, receiving the gold medal in three swimming events, including the 100 meter freestyle, 50 meter freestyle and the 50 meter backstroke. Melick, a Wounded Warrior and anti-tank missileman with 2nd Bn., 9th Marines, competed in archery, swimming and seated discus. He placed second in compound archery out of 150 competitors, and took home the gold

medal in the seated discus. The road to the trials was not easy for the two Marines, but through perseverance and dedication, they kept pushing forward. When Latham first arrived at Wounded Warrior Bn. East, he knew it was important to keep a positive mind set, he said. “When I first arrived, my former first sergeant told me not to go into the shadows and let this situation take hold of me,” said Latham. “He told me to be active and see what is out there and that’s exactly what I did.” Sports gave the injured Marines a way to compete while keeping their minds focused on bettering themselves. “When I first got to Wounded Warrior Bn. East, I had pretty low spirits,” said Melick. “After I rekindled my skills in swimming and archery, it really raised my spirits, and when they told me I had a chance to compete in the trials I was excited.” Through all the hardships and bumps in the road, the Marines refuse to let their injuries slow them down. “It has really helped me understand that even though I have limits, I set them in my mind more than on my body,” said Latham. “When I first got injured I couldn’t walk, or talk and now as I keep progressing, those boundaries keep disappearing.” According to the two Marines, being involved and stay-

ing motivated is a key part of the recovery process, something they hope to share with Wounded Warriors around the country. “Find something that is your driving source, whether it is your family, your church or an activity, and let that be your outlet,” said Latham. “Don’t just sit in your room and be alone. Being alone is the worst punishment you can do to yourself, so be active and go hang out with friends.” Melick said whether you spend time with friends or compete in a sport, always keep moving forward in your life and the recovery process. “It’s important to know your limitations, but get out there and be active,” said Melick. “Things get better over time and getting involved in something really helps.” Although all service members were pushing for a medal, not all prizes won at the trials were made of gold. No matter how each service member performed during the competition, every Wounded Warrior bettered themselves in some way and met a goal, explained Latham. “Even the people who didn’t place, still reached a goal,” said Latham. “They made a new personal best, they pursued something and overcame adversity and can now continue to push themselves. It’s not all about medals and being the best, it’s about being the best you.”

According to the award, the Cherry Point Partnering Team accelerated cleanup through effective program management, collaborative teamwork, application of innovative technology and improved risk assessment. CHAPLAIN from page A2 believers in Jesus Christ have recognized this supernatural event through the celebration of Easter Sunday which is preceded by Passover week and the season of Lent. Now as for the origin of the word “Easter” itself, it comes to us from Ostera or Eostre, the Anglo-Saxon goddess of spring for whom a spring festival was held annually. As for the origin of the Easter egg, it is based on the fertility lore of the Indo-European races. To them the egg was a symbol of spring. Hence in the early development of the Christian era, the egg had taken on a religious interpretation where it had become a symbol of the tomb from which Jesus Christ emerged to new life in his resurrection.

Each year, Marines and units from across all of the aircraft wings continue to build on their strengths and accomplishments regardless of whether or not they receive recognition for their efforts. Marine Aerial Refueler Transport Squadron 252 faced several obstacles during 2013 trying to balance its everyday mission while supporting Operation Enduring Freedom and Special Purpose Marine Air-Ground Task Force Crisis Response, said VMGR-252 commanding officer Lt. Col. Scott M. Koltick. VMGR-252 was awarded the Commandant’s Aviation Trophy for outstanding performance of a Marine Aviation Squadron. The award means a lot, he said. The last time the squadron won the award was in 1994. “This is significant when you look at what we have accomplished in the last 20 years,” Koltick said. This year was a busy year for the longest continually-active squadron in the Marine Corps. VMGR-252 also played an integral role during the Weapons and Tactics Instructor Course and supported Marine expeditionary units and Marine expeditionary force operations. Marine Air Control Group 28 also brought home several awards for 2nd MAW. The unit won all three command and control awards: the command/control officer of the year, the command/control Marine of the year and the air command/control unit of the year. This marks the first time a single MACG has ever swept all three categories, said Col. Jeff S. Kojac, the MACG-28 commanding officer. “Frankly, for the Marines of one MACG to be recognized with all three of these awards all the awards that they are eligible for in a single year is unheard of and an unequivocal manifestation that the Marines of MACG-28 are accomplishing something rare and worthwhile,” said Kojack. For the award winners, and even some of the squadrons that did not win awards, there were moments of brilliance, Sofge said. He is proud of the recognition, but does not want to overshadow the hard work and dedication to duty put forth by other Marines and units across the Corps. Like other wing squadrons, Koltick said his goal for the unit is to continue to build on the successes they have experienced. “We are very proud to represent the wing,” said Sofge. “We try hard every day. All the credit goes to the Marines. It is not about a particular commander; it is about the Marines and recognizing how hard the team has worked.”

New technology could autonomize rotary-wing landings CPL. SAMUEL ELLIS MARINE CORPS BASE QUANTICO

Participants examine an Autonomous Aerial Cargo/Utility System prototype during a demonstration at Marine Corps Base Quantico, Va., Feb. 27. AACUS is a series of sensors and aircraft software that enables a Marine or other operator to arrange for a landing by an unmanned or manned rotary-wing aircraft to an unprepared landing site.

A helicopter lands during an Autonomous Aerial Cargo/Utility System prototype demonstration at Marine Corps Base Quantico, Va., March 20. AACUS is a system of software and sensors, which provides autonomous approach and landing capabilities to any rotary aircraft, manned or unmanned.

MARINE CORPS BASE QUANTICO, Va. - Going beyond remote-controlled technology that currently exists for aircraft, the Office of Naval Research is spearheading the development of a new rotary-wing aircraft software and sensor system that would bring autonomous approaches and landings via manned or unmanned helicopters. According to ONR, the Autonomous Aerial Cargo/Utility System is designed to provide “autonomous approaches and landings at unprepared landing sites, minimally supervised by field operators with no special training” for manned or unmanned rotary-wing aircraft. “This is a Navy-Marine Corps team project,” said Rear Adm. Matt Klunder, chief of naval research. “We’ve taken a landing system that can autonomously land an unmanned helicopter or aircraft into a very dangerous landing zone, potentially with the touch of a tablet. This is an expeditionary type of capability and there was no better place to test it than Quantico.” During February and March, Quantico hosted demonstrations at Range 15 for Marine Corps and Navy leaders and ONR representatives. “Having Quantico so close to the Office of Naval Research and being able to work here and use the airspace and ranges in a realistic scenario has been very positive for the program,” said Capt. David Woodbury, director for the ONR’s Naval Air Warfare and Weapons Department. “[Part of the purpose] is to get hardware and software out in front of Marines and let them see what these types of systems can do.” Quantico Marines assisted in setting up equipment to present the prototypes. The AACUS program is a $98-million, five-year effort to provide the autonomous capability to the Marine Corps and Navy and has the potential to make an impact to mission accomplishment. The system is a result of the effort to develop a method, other than convoys or manned helicopters, of delivering supplies to the battlefield safely and expediently. “Truly, as we bring this out to our brothers and sisters in the Corps, we are talking about safely bringing all our Marines home, resupply, and potentially rescuing Marines,” said Klunder. “This may be able to help us in a tremendous way in the future to do just that.”

Easter ‘eggcitement’ comes to Cherry Point LANCE CPL. VICTOR A. ARRIAGA MCAS CHERRY POINT

“Get ready, set, go!” sounded from behind the caution tape as children ran toward the little colored eggs scattered all across the ground at the Shady Grove picnic area. Hidden under pine needles, behind trees and even under tires, the children searched for the eggs left behind by a little furry friend. Service members and families of Marine Aircraft Group 14 gathered for the fifth annual Easter Eggstravaganza at Cherry Point April 11. Egg tosses, egg hunts and a visit from the Easter Bunny were some of the many activities that were offered to Marines, Sailors and the families of MAG-14. “At MAG-14, we work really closely with the other squadrons so this kind of event builds camaraderie and lets Marines and Sailors get to know each other,” said Michael McGuinness, the family readiness officer for MAG-14. More than 1,300 service members participated in Eggstravaganza, a higher turnout than any previous year, according to McGuinness. “This is by far the largest event we have ever put together for the families and service members of MAG-14, and it’s just great,” said McGuinness. Family members were able to take their children out for a day of fun with the members of MAG-14, bringing everyone closer together. “I definitely think this type of event is a good thing,” said Cpl. Cory Andreoni, an aviation electronics technician with Marine Air Logistics Squadron 14. “It brings families together and gives the kids something to do.” Parents even participated in some of the events allowing for morale boosting fun with their children. “This is just perfect,” said Capt. Candie Coleman, a continuous process improvement officer with MALS-14. “This is good for morale and families feel a part of the unit and the events as well.”

The American Red Cross and Semper Fit hosted a lifeguard certification class for service members and civilians at Cherry Point, April 12 – 17. During the course, the Marines learned cardiopulmonary resuscitation, how to use automated external defibrillators, basic first aid and lifeguarding for professional rescuers. “The hardest part of the course is putting everything together, said Staff Sgt. Patrick McKelvey a cyber systems chief with Marine Wing Communication Squadron 28. McKelvey took the course to better himself and the community. “You can never be too well trained, said McKelvey. “This course is very detailed and you learn everything you need to possibly save a life. The classes, which were open to service members and

civilians age 15 or older, are designed to inform students of the responsibilities of lifeguards and some life saving skills required for all lifeguards, according to Terri Fisher, the lead instructor for the classes. “As instructors it is our job to teach this class properly, with all the correct techniques needed to rescue someone and possibly save a life, said Fisher. “The reason we are hosting the classes on the air station is that there are many pools in need of lifeguards for these upcoming months. Fisher, who has years of experience teaching lifeguards, believes lifeguard training can be applied away from the pool, as well. “These classes also build life skills that can be extremely valuable throughout life. The classes build teamwork, confidence, and a satisfaction that you are able to protect someone else’s life. For more information about possible future lifeguard classes, call (252) 466-2510.
