VMAQT-1 completes transition, first pilots begin flying

VMGR-252 welcomes new commander LANCE CPL. JOSHUA R. HEINS MCAS CHERRY POINT

The Marine Corps’ oldest continually active squadron welcomed a new commanding officer at Cherry Point March 27. Lt. Col. Scott M. Kolick assumed command of Marine Aerial Refueler Transport Squadron 252, taking the reins from Lt. Col. Walter J. Butler Jr. during a changeof-command ceremony at the squadron’s hangar. The KC-130J Super Hercules squadron supports the Marine Air-Ground Task Force commander by providing air-to-air refueling and day and night assault and offensive air support. The squadron supports expeditionary, joint or combined operations. Butler, who has been at the helm since September 2012, said he is confident in Kolick’s ability to lead the historic squadron. Butler earned a Meritorious Service Medal for his time with the squadron and is slated to attend the U.S. National War College to further his professional military education. “I’ve had a great run with the squadron,” said Butler. “I’ve learned great things from the relationships I’ve built with the Marines here. My advice is that you can never take a day off if you want to succeed.” Kolick comes to the squadron from Marine Aircraft Group 14, where he served as the personnel supply detachment commander. According to Kolick, the leaders who mentored him and taught him throughout

The squadron’s mission is essential to keeping operational tactical electronic warfare squadrons fully staffed with trained aircrews, according to Lt. Col. Melissa Kelley, the squadron’s executive officer. VMAQT-1 is the first Prowler training squadron in the Marine Corps. The Navy

conducted all previous Prowler pilot and aircrew training, according to Kelley. “(The Navy has) about two operational squadrons left but they do not require more aircrews to fill those squadrons,” said Kelley. “In order to staff Marine Prowler squadrons for the next five years, See PILOTS page A9

A message to leaders: arm yourself with knowledge of your Marines LANCE CPL. JOSHUA R. HEINS MCAS CHERRY POINT

If any particular topic lends itself to the Commandant of the Marine Corps’ Reawakening Campaign – it is the subject of having personal weapons on Cherry Point. Because nothing will help to ensure Marines here

are safely complying with the air station regulations better than the involvement of the noncommissioned and commissioned officers in a weapon owner’s chain of command. For Walter Davila, the assistant operations officer with the Provost Marshal’s Office, the

concept is simple: Do you have a Marine in your charge who lives on the air station and owns (projectile-emitting) weapons? Do you have a Marine who brings a firearm aboard the air station to shoot at the skeet range? “If the answer is yes to either of those questions,” says Davila, “then

you, as an NCO, SNCO or officer, should be aware of that and should make sure these Marines fully understand the related air station regulation, Air Station Order 5510.15c.” The order gives firearms owners everything they need to know about who can bring personally

owned weapons aboard Cherry Point, and when and how they can do it, said Davila. All Marine leaders, especially NCOs, should ensure their Marines understand and follow the air station order. “Noncommissioned officers See WEAPONS page A9

If there were no God LT. CMDR. CHARLES W. JOHNSON MAG-14 GROUP CHAPLAIN

“If there were no God, there would be no atheists,” the great G. K. Chesterton once said. I imagine that some people would disagree almost without thinking. “That can’t be right! No God means we’d all be atheists.” This little column of mine, is a modest attempt to prevent the “almost without thinking” part. Let us think about this for a minute, if you have some time. First, I think we could all agree that if there were no alcohol, there would be no teetotalers. If there were no tobacco, there would be no anti-smoking groups. No war, no pacifists. So, why can’t we also say that if there were no God, there would be no atheists? Well, you might be thinking, that atheism means, properly speaking, something opposed to theism, or belief in God. So would it be more correct to say if there were no theism, there would be no atheism? Maybe so, but I do not think that is what Chesterton meant exactly. I think his reasoning goes something like this. Why are there baseball fans? Because there is really such a thing as baseball. Why are there people we call bird-watchers? Because there really are birds. Why are there theists? Because there really is a God. That is to say, you never find widespread groups of people, or people who act and think the same, without there being some real thing that moves them to act and think that way. Even the most hardened skeptic would have to admit

that belief in God—or belief in a divine being of some kind, to keep it more general, is more widespread than almost anything else in human history. What is the most ancient civilization on earth? The ancient cultures of the Tigris and Euphrates river valley in modern Iraq. Belief in the divine? Absolutely present. What about the most up-to-date and technologically sophisticated cultures found here in the U.S.? I probably do not even need to point out the obvious theism of our country. But what about one of the most godless and officially atheistic countries of more modern times Soviet Russia? It turns out that the man who started all the changes that brought about the end of the Soviet Union, Mikhail Gorbachev, was secretly baptized as an infant and fostered a devotion to St. Francis of Assisi all through his adult life. In short, this so-called theism seems to be a response by human beings to a reality who we call God. If there were no God, there would be no theism. Atheists, on the other hand are, as their name suggests, a reaction against the reality we call theists, or people who believe in God. If there were no theists, there certainly would not be any atheists. If we put it all together, as I hope I’ve made clear by now, if there were no God, there would be no atheists. God bless you all!

Marines across the Corps find themselves in various units and job assignments throughout their career. Sgt. Erica Bloomingdale is no stranger to stepping up to the challenge of filling multiple roles at once. “I am originally a loadmaster for the KC-130J Hercules,” said Bloomingdale, a loadmaster for one of two Marine Corps C-9B Skytrains with Marine Transport Squadron 1. “My job includes the loading and unloading of passengers and cargo, rapid ground refueling, aerial refueling, air drops of cargo and personnel and battlefield illumination.” Bloomingdale, a Plymouth, Ohio native, enlisted in the Marine Corps September 2005 and has deployed to Iraq, Afghanistan and in support of the Special Marine Air Ground Task Force in Sigonella, Italy. “I chose the job because it looked like something that would fit my personality,” said Bloomingdale. “I really enjoy challenges and I felt this job would present that too me.” Aside from her normal duties and between flight hours, Bloomingdale schedules all the annual training for the Marines of VMR-1 as part of her duties as the ground-training noncommissioned officer for the squadron. However, her true passion is being in the air. “What I like most about my job is flying,” she said. Bloomingdale says she is looking forward to continuing her career in the Marine Corps. “Something I’m looking forward to in my career is just being a Marine tomorrow,” said Bloomingdale. “I’m definitely looking forward to advancing in rank, but I really enjoy being a sergeant, I enjoy being a Marine today.”

CNATT warrior night Reawakens NCO spirit, builds unit camaraderie

PHOTOS BY SGT. T. T. PARISH

Marines and Sailors with Cherry Point’s Center for Naval Aviation Technical Training take a short break during a six-mile hike at Cherry Point Friday. The Cherry Point CNATT Marines and Sailors took to the field as part of the school’s implementation of the commandant and sergeant major of the Marine Corps’ Reawakening campaign.

SGT. T. T. PARISH MCAS CHERRY POINT

Marines and Sailors with Cherry Point’s Center for Naval Aviation Technical Training took to the field for their first Warrior Night March 28, aiming to reinforce NCO leadership, unit camaraderie and esprit de corps. The noncommissioned officer planned and led event gave the unit’s students a chance to see a side of the Marine Corps uncommon in the aviation community. The leadership shown by the squadron’s NCOs gave the students an example of leadership to emulate, according to Gunnery Sgt. Nathaniel W. Benischek, squadron gunnery sergeant. “We did it as a way to reawaken our NCOs and bring our young Marines back to center,” said Benischek. “Warrior Night gives our sergeants an opportunity to reawaken their leadership and show that they can take charge of their Marines.” As part of the Corps-wide Reawakening campaign, CNATT planned the Warrior Night for more than a month, according to Benischek. The NCOs put ground level leadership into practice by organizing all logistics and planning for the event, to include a six-mile hike, presentations by Marines with Cherry Point’s 2nd Low Altitude Air Defense Battalion, field games and a field mess night. The event gave the NCOs hands on experience in preparing a unit for hikes, and being responsible for their junior Marines welfare and safety, which developed their leadership abilities, according to Benischek. CNATT’s mission is to prepare junior Marines in the aviation field for a vital role in the Marine Corps’ aviation community. It is one of 24 schools in the Navy’s aviation training structure that prepares its students to maintain and repair Marine Corps fixed-wing aircraft. The Warrior Night gave the NCOs a chance to lead and connect with the students whom they train, according to Sgt. Travis N. Thompson, an instructor with CNATT. Working with CNATT’s command leadership, the NCOs took an idea and put it into action, said Thompson. “Some of the sergeants got together with the commanding officer and sergeant major because they wanted to do something to build morale with the junior Marines and the students. Together we came up with the Warrior Night,” said Thompson. Thompson sees a direct correlation between the Warrior Night and the Marine Corps’ Reawakening campaign. He hopes the CNATT students, many of whom will soon enter the fleet, take the experience and apply the example of leadership throughout their careers. “As far as fitting into the Reawakening, (the commandant and sergeant major of the Marine Corps) really want the NCOs to take charge again,” Thompson said. “So we came together to build this for our students. I believe the event helped build camaraderie and competitiveness within the unit.”

Waves of ROK, U.S. Marines roll onto beach

Republic of Korea and U.S. Marine amphibious assault vehicles deploy smoke grenades before storming Dokseok-ri Beach during the amphibious assault portion of exercise Ssang Yong 2014 in Pohang Monday. Ssang Yong exercises the amphibious capabilities of the ROK-U.S. Navy and Marine Corps team and is a tribute to the maturity of ROK-U.S. relationship.

POHANG, Republic of Korea - Republic of Korea, U.S. and Australian armed forces demonstrated combined amphibious landing capabilities during Ssang Yong 2014 in Pohang, Republic of Korea. Ssang Yong 14 incorporates more than 13,600 U.S. and ROK Navy-Marine and Australian Army forces, and effectively demonstrates the unique abilities of forward-deployed Marine air-ground task forces with allied partners. “This is a combined exercise that we began planning for many months ago and we’ve worked very hard with our ROK Marine partners,” said U.S. Marine Lt. Gen. John Wissler, commanding general of III Marine Expeditionary Force. “It began with the academics of studying the art of amphibious techniques.” The day’s exercise began with simulated explosives rounds detonating a few feet from the shoreline as U.S. Marine AV-8B Harriers and MV-22B Ospreys provided air support. As wave after wave of amphibious assault vehicles approached the beach, a thick smoke screen was deployed to conceal the exact scale of the oncoming force. Waiting to engage the Marines on the beach were Marines, both U.S. and ROK, acting as the opposition force to add intense

realism to the training, which commanders view as vital to mission readiness. Ssang Yong 14 exercises the interoperability and combined capability of ROK, U.S. Marine Corps and Australian forces, strengthening the alliances. The full scale of the force behind the exercise consists of more than 20 U.S. and ROK Navy ships, and approximately 13,000 military personnel. Air assets included CH-53E Super Stallions, UH-1Y Hueys, AH-1E Super Cobras circling overhead and bringing troops inland and providing close-air support for the landing forces. “The timing of this exercise was based on the availability of the unique forces that could come together for this operation,” said Wissler. “Two Marine expeditionary units, one ROK battalion landing team and also our Australian partners participated in this training. I believe we were very successful.” Three beach landings took place simultaneously at Dokseok-ri, Hwajin and Dogue, and as that was happening, Ospreys dropped off Marines for vertical assaults at an inland objective miles away at Suesong-ri range. Combined forcible entry operations at these varied locations proved the capability of the combined U.S., ROK and Australian forces. The exercise is a tribute to the maturity

of the ROK-U.S. relationship, refined and developed over years of training together. The combined ability to operate across the range of military operations — from disaster relief to complex, expeditionary operations — contributes to the security and stability on the Korean Peninsula as well as the entire Asia-Pacific region. All of the operations for this massive exercise were controlled from the USS Bonhomme Richard, which demonstrated the ROK and U.S. Marine Corps’ combined command and control from a seabased platform. “I feel it is necessary for U.S. Marines to come and train with us. This was a good opportunity to bridge our capabilities,” said ROK Marine Staff Sgt. Park Jong Kil, a squad leader with Reconnaissance Battalion, 1st ROK Marine Division. “I worked with U.S. Marines during Cobra Gold 14 and now I’m working with U.S. Marines again for Ssang Yong 14 and I’ve learned a lot of things from them on both occasions.” The U.S. Marine Corps and Navy team are committed to the ROK-U.S. alliance and conduct exercises regularly to ensure interoperability and maintain strong working relationships. “We’ve been training with the ROK Marines for a few days, learning how they do things,” said U.S. Marine Lance Cpl.

Thomas A. Hinz, a rifleman with 2nd Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment, assigned to 3rd Marine Expeditionary Brigade for the exercise. “I’ve trained with a few different countries, but the ROK’s have stuck out in my mind. I’ve learned some new tactics from them. They’ve got a different way of operating than we do. We’ve taught them a few things and they’ve taught us a few things, so this was a real learning experience.” The Navy and Marine Corps team provides sustainable maneuver warfare from the sea without the need for air or sea ports, effectively projecting power in the event of any crisis. “After 10 years of fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan… there may be people out there that say that returning to our amphibious roots will be too hard and assume it will take a generation of Marines to relearn how to do this. I say we will do it in the blink of an eye,” said U.S. Marine Brig. Gen. Paul Kennedy, commanding general of 3rd MEB, III MEF, deputy commanding general of III MEF, and overall Ssang Yong exercise commander. “We are going to prove to the world that the United States Marine Corps has not forgotten how to fight off these decks.”

As Chief Warrant Officer Larry R. Earl Jr. stood at the position of attention at Miller’s Landing aboard Cherry Point, one could not help but notice the gleam in his eye as his father, Earl Sr., walked up the aisle. His father, a retired Marine chief warrant officer 4, stepped forward to retire his son March 27, after watching him follow in his own footsteps for nearly 21 years. As Earl Jr. stood waiting, a feeling of déjà vu set over him as he recollected a time years ago when his father enlisted him into the Marine Corps. He remembered all the times his father helped guide and mentor him into the Marine he is today. “I owe where I am today to my father,” said Earl Jr. “He has been there for a lot of my accomplishments and I am just glad to have followed in his footsteps.” Earl Sr. watched his son depart for recruit training; watched him grow after earning the Eagle, Globe and Anchor; watched him develop as a Marine and as a leader, and promoted him after he joined the chief warrant officer ranks. “Because my dad enlisted me and brought me into the Marine Corps, he was my first choice to (act as my retiring officer),” said Earl Jr., the 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing’s fuel officer. “When I talked to him on the phone, we both paused and kind of had that silent agreement where he said ‘yes.’” As a father pinned a final award, a Meritorious Service Medal, to his son’s chest, a shared look of pride and accomplishment said more than words. Shortly after, Earl Sr. handed his son his retirement certificate, ending a career but continuing a legacy of family service. “I don’t know how else to describe being at my son’s retirement ceremony,” said Earl Sr. “It’s been a real hoot. When my son asked me if I would retire him, I was able to go full circle, since I was the one who enlisted him.” Earl Sr. described the journey with his “best friend,” watching him grow up and leading him in the right direction toward the man he is today. “I’m happy to put the uniform back on and very proud to be able to retire my own son … and outrank him,” he joked.

OUTLYING FIELD CAMP DAVIS, N.C. - Getting fuel and ordnance to an aircraft as fast as possible in a remote site, whether it be in a combat situation or during training, is the purpose of a forward arming and refueling point. Marines from Marine Wing Support Squadron 272 conducted FARP training at Marine Corps Outlying Field Camp Davis March 24 – 28. “The training exercise was designed to get fuel to a remote site expediently without having to put a lot of fuel bags on the ground or use a lot of personnel,” said Chief Warrant Officer Kevin Brown, MWSS-272 fuels officer-incharge. “We use the FARP to go out and refuel the warfighters on the front lines. The key to making a FARP successful is the bulk-fuel Marines, the refuel Marines and the ordnance Marines, because it wouldn’t be a FARP without the fuel and ordnance.” Brown went on to explain the different types of FARPs, such as hot, cold and static. “During a cold FARP, the aircraft are powered down and then fueled and supplied,” said Brown. “As for a static FARP, the aircraft land, remain on and are fueled and supplied at the same time at the landing point.” The squadron only refueled and provided ordnance to two types of helicopters, the AH-1W Super Cobras and UH-1Y Hueys, during the exercise due to different requirements for the MV-22B Ospreys and CH-53E Super Stallions. “Ospreys and Super Stallions need more space. Right now the way we are set up it is 150 feet out, but Ospreys and Super Stallions need 300 feet,” Brown said. Although MWSS-272 was responsible for the refueling of the aircraft, the training exercise would not have been possible without some help and ordnance from Marine Aircraft Group 29. “The FARP training exercise was a combined effort of Marine Air Control Squadron 2, Marine Air Traffic Control Mobile Team, MWSS-272 aircraft rescue and fire fighters, bulk fuel, motor transportation and MAG-29 ordnance Marines,” said Brown. During the exercise, safety was paramount, according to Sgt. Dustin Kureska, MWSS-272 mobile refueler. “The Marines we have out here are pretty knowledgeable about what they are doing,” said Kureska. “I have a lot of confidence in the Marines.” During a FARP, it is not only important for the Marines with boots on the ground to be aware of what is going on during the exercise, but for the pilots receiving fuel and ordnance as well, according to Capt. Jonathan Zasadny, a Super Cobra pilot with Marine Light Attack Helicopter Squadron 167. “Some of the main things to look out for during a FARP are where the winds are coming from, fuel and ordnance availability and getting in and out of the FARP as safely as possible,” said Zasadny. Setting up a FARP on Davis is also a big convenience for the pilots during training, according to Zasadny. “Before the FARP on Davis, pilots would have to fly out to Cherry Point in order to receive ordnance and then fly back to Camp Lejeune to conduct our training,” said Zasadny. “Now, we fly five minutes out to Davis, top off on fuel and ordnance, and we are on our way. It expands our operational areas and keeps everyone more proficient overall.

we had to develop a fleet replacement squadron here at Cherry Point.” In June of last year, the squadron, previously known as VMAQ-1, transitioned to a training squadron to fill the void left by the Navy’s break from the Prowler. The previous training squadron for Marine Prowler naval aviators was located at Naval Air Station Whidbey Island, Wash., until the Navy transitioned to the EA-18G Growler, according to Kelley. “We are training basic aircrew straight out of the training command flight schools where they earned their wings,” said Kelley. “There are several classes behind (the first class) that are still in ground school training.” VMAQT-1 became a training squadron in June 2013 and welcomed its first batch of newly minted naval aviators in October 2013. The student aviators were conducting ground training in Prowler simulators at Cherry Point before finally taking off in the pilot’s seat for the first time March 27. Tuesday was the target date for the squadron to reach full operational capability and they met their goal, said Kelley. “They are the first students to see our full syllabus and they have provided us with some really good feedback concerning the training,” said Kelley. “We will refine (the syllabus) to make it better for each subsequent class.”

need to take the time to stay involved with their Marines,” said Davila. “They should know everything about their Marines, to include whether or not they have a personal weapon and if it is properly registered.” Weapon owners who live at Cherry Point or bring weapons aboard the air station must have a valid military, retired or dependent ID or civilian ID, along with proof of purchase of the weapon. Serial numbers must be clearly stamped on the weapon for required registration with the Pass and Identification office. “You are allowed to own projectile-emitting weapons on base, including everything from rifles to Airsoft guns,” said Sgt. Roberto Rodriguez, a watch commander with PMO. “However, anything that emits a projectile must be registered with Pass and ID.” “A simple way to ensure your Marines understand the air station order is to be knowledgeable on the order yourself and make it a part of the check-in process,” said Staff Sgt. Barry Hodges, an armory chief for Marine Wing Support Squadron 274. Leaders getting involved with their Marines and ensuring the station order is followed is a simple matter, according to Hodges. “NCOs should just talk to their Marines.” For more information about personally owned weapons regulations at Cherry Point, review the air station order on the Cherry Point website at http://bit.ly/WeaponsOrder or call PMO at 466-3615.

ITX from page A1 and air-assault capabilities in support of ITX. The squadron participated in the training to prepare for future deployments. The training enhanced the squadron’s mission readiness and ability to tackle missions in a variety of expeditionary environments, said Capt. Warren Z. Crittenden, action officer with HMH-366. “We had eight of our CH-53E Super Stallions and approximately 170 Marines on hand to support the ground combat element,” he said. “Ultimately, we were able to integrate with them during their training to meet our assessment requirements by supporting contingency operation scenarios.” The squadron’s involvement gave other units an opportunity to see firsthand how heavy helicopters are best used in support of combat operations. HMH-366 conducted raid operations, aerial delivery, ground refueling and tactical recovery of aircraft and personnel. Training at Twentynine Palms provided a realistic and austere environment, said Crittenden. Several other 2nd MAW squadrons took part in the training, including Marine Wing Support Squadron 271, Marine Light Attack Helicopter Squadron 467 and Marine Air Support Squadron 1. More than 1,000 Marines and Sailors from across 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing took part. “It was a great experience for the squadron to practice the mission essential tasks we are going to execute during (future operations) and integrate with HMLA-467,” Crittenden said. “We work in close proximity with them, and they are going to be there as well, so we were able to foster relationships now before we get there.” Overall, Crittenden said the Marines performed well and he is confident in their abilities to accomplish their mission.

Kurt Busch delivers his first 2014 Sprint Cup win in dramatic fashion Harold Hinson for Chevy Racing

“There were a lot of naysayers and doubters out there about Stewart-Haas Racing,” Haas said. “With Tony (Stewart) having his injury last year, it looked like we were all washed up and out of business. “But it just goes to show Kurt Busch celebrates his victory in the STP you that there 500, his first win of the 2014 Sprint Cup is a team behind every- season. body. That was always the backup plan. We are still going forward. “Racing is tough. Every time you win, you typically lose three times. It’s a very difficult sport, and it’s always great to win.” Kurt Busch battles Jimmie Johnson (left) in the final stretch of the STP 500 at Haas also Martinsville Speedway on March 30. said he was glad to see that Busch was able to put aside the early spat with Keselowski and go on to victory. “As far as Kurt Busch handling it, I think he did a great job, and we have obviously found a solution for Kurt Busch,” he said. “When he is in Winner’s Circle, he doesn’t [complain] about anything, so that is where we need to keep him.” Busch’s victory came after a slow start to the season. He didn’t score his first top-20 finish until placing third in the Auto Club 400 the week prior to Martinsville. And the team is led by a rookie crew chief, Daniel Knost, who got his first Cup victory on home turf, as he’s a Virginia native. “A win like [Sunday’s] is a great step forward,” Busch said. “I don’t want it to camouflage any of the work, though, that we still have to do to make our car stronger and to be more competitive week in and week out. “But don’t think that I’m not going to enjoy this for one moment.”

California businessman Gene Haas has been fielding cars in NASCAR’s Sprint Cup Series since 2002, when Jack Sprague drove his car to a 35th-place finish at Kansas Speedway. But it wasn’t until this past Sunday at Martinsville Speedway that a car primarily sponsored by his Haas Automation company went to Victory Lane. Kurt Busch, the driver Haas hired last year to be the fourth driver at Stewart-Haas Racing, the team Haas co-owns with driver Tony Stewart, delivered the milestone win in dramatic fashion. He overcame an early race skirmish with Brad Keselowski that could have seen him knocked out of the race, then outdueled Jimmie Johnson — a Martinsville master — down the stretch to seal the victory. It was Busch’s first win since October 2011, when he drove a Roger Penske-owned car to victory at Dover International Speedway. And he becomes the sixth different winner in the first six races this season. The Victory Lane appearance by Haas Automation has been surprisingly long in coming, given the position that company holds in the machinery world. Haas, as a sole car owner, ran 284 races without a win, but now has 21 since Stewart joined his team as a co-owner. But none of the earlier 20 came in races in which Haas Automation was the primary sponsor. Haas’ company is the nation’s largest machine tool manufacturer and specializes in computer numerical control (CNC) technology. CNC machines are computer-controlled devices that do everything from cutting out precision parts for race cars to slicing up top-of-the-line kitchen tiles. They replace earlier technology in which machine tools are controlled manually with hand wheels and levers. Haas, speaking on a teleconference with reporters after the race in Martinsville, said he liked what he saw in the performances of his driver and of Johnson. “I think Jimmie was a real gentleman about racing [Busch] cleanly and not trying to push him out of the way,” Haas said. “I think Kurt and Jimmie both did that. “Ultimately, they didn’t do what they typically do at the end of those races, where they have multiple passes and all that stuff, so those two guys did really well. I think we just came out on top of that. Any other day, I think Jimmie would have come out on top. “I was just really impressed with that, and the great season, to finally win a race with Haas Automation on the hood. “It couldn’t have been better. … Well, it could, if I could have been there.” The win also validated Haas’ decision to hire Busch, who had been considered “damaged goods” in NASCAR after being released by Penske, in large part because of his behavior off the track, which included tirades against several reporters, including the highly respected Dr. Jerry Punch. And he said it was a sign that the team is on the rebound from its troubles of a year ago, when Stewart was unable to compete because of a broken leg and the team’s overall performance tailed off.

an absolute moron to risk that. I have a daughter that I have to provide for for a really long time.” He said that because he’s out in public more than some of his peers, some people assume he’s a little on the wild side. “I don’t stay tucked in my motorhome,” he said. “I don’t stay Sam Hornish Jr. drove for Denny Hamlin tucked into my house. in the Auto Club 400 on March 23. It’s not what I like to do. Because I’m out there a little bit more, people think I go out and I party. I don’t drink at all hardly, ever. I’ve never done drugs, ever. I’m as clean as they come.” He said he worked too hard to get where he is today to throw it all away on something foolish. “It bothers me that my character is questioned,” he said. “People think that there’s some kind of conspiracy. It just bothers me because there’s people that like to make rumors, and, of course, within our NASCAR community, rumors become truth when enough people say it.”

Logano sets track record but doesn’t win pole With NASCAR’s new knockout qualifying, which features either two or three sessions, depending on the length of the track, it’s likely that there will be many instances going forward in which the fastest driver does not start from the pole. It happened on Friday at Martinsville Speedway, where Joey Logano set a track record in the opening session of qualifying, but was third-fastest in the final round, which meant he started third in the race, behind pole-sitter Kyle Busch. Logano’s speed of 100.201 miles per hour broke the record of 99.595 mph set last fall by Denny Hamlin, who qualified second this time. “The guys were telling me that’s our sixth segment we’ve won in qualifying, and we only have one pole, so I’m winning the wrong ones and it’s really frustrating me,” Logano said. “I’m a little mad about our second run there. I felt like we really had a shot at the pole.” Logano finished fourth in the STP 500, tops among the Ford contingent.

Denny Hamlin slams speculation over missing the Auto Club 400 When Denny Hamlin was unable to drive his No. 11 Toyota in the Auto Club 400 on March 23, the initial reports said it was because of vision problems believed to be caused by a sinus condition. But it wasn’t until midday on Wednesday after that race that Hamlin and his team revealed that the real culprit was a flake of rusty metal that had somehow gotten into his eye, causing the pain and affecting his vision. Because more than two days went by with no update, some began to wonder what was wrong with Hamlin, leading to some wild speculation. Hamlin said in a media briefing at Martinsville Speedway that he waited to make any announcement until he was sure there weren’t other issues besides those related to the flake of metal. “Although at the hospital they found the metal and I felt better instantly, that doesn’t mean that was the whole problem,” he said. “We had to go through two more days of testing in Charlotte to realize that the sinus part was OK. That’s why nothing was said for a few days, because I don’t want to be speaking out of line and not knowing exactly what I’m talking about until I know exactly what the problem was.” But Hamlin was upset that people questioned his integrity during the days leading up to his announcement. “My health is my business, but what if it was cancer or a tumor — I don’t have to tell anyone that,” he said. “It’s my business. People who think negatively of me or think that we sidestepped some sort of drug test or something is ridiculous. “I’m in one of the top three cars in NASCAR. I would have to be

The two Richard Petty Motorsports drivers — Marcos Ambrose and Aric Almirola — went into the STP 500 at Martinsville Speedway hoping for strong finishes to honor the memory of Lynda Petty, the wife of Richard Petty, who died Tuesday before the Martinsville race. They didn’t win, as both were hoping to do, but they had strong runs, with Ambrose finishing fifth and Almirola eighth. “We’ve had a really tough week,” said Ambrose, who led 22 laps. “We lost Miss Lynda. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Petty family right now. We really wanted to win for them bad out there, but we’ll take a top 5. We’re really proud of our efforts.” Ambrose said the Petty team — which has struggled in recent seasons — is on the rebound. “We spent a lot of money and a lot of effort in getting Richard Petty Motorsports back on the map, and I think you’re seeing the results,” he said. “We’ve been fast for about four weeks in a row, and we’re just starting to hit our stride. We’re going to win one of these soon and lock ourselves in the Chase and feel good about our chances.” Almirola, who recently posted a career-best third-place finish at Bristol, said he, too, has hopes of winning in the not-too-distant future. “We’re doing things right,” he said. “If we keep running like this, we’ll get to Victory Lane.”

When the new Chase formula was announced earlier this year, it was generally assumed that a single win in one of the 26 regular-season races would assure a driver one of the 16 berths in the Chase. But now that the season has opened with six different drivers winning in the first six races, many are wondering if there will be more than 16 winners in the first 26 races, which would mean that some race winners would miss the Chase. Carl Edwards, who won at Bristol Motor Speedway, said he can see that happening. “I believe we’re going to have more than 16 winners,” he said. “It feels that way. It feels like there are more competitive cars.” Edwards, who is third in the standings, is counting on his ranking to give him some working room as the season goes on. “The easiest way for us, though, is to just go win [another] race,” he said. “Right now, we’re going to go for it and try to get that win while we have the points to lose.” Series points leader Dale Earnhardt Jr., who felt like he was a sure bet to make the Chase after his win in the Daytona 500, said he’s hoping Edwards is wrong about the prospect of more than 16 winners this year, because that will force drivers to be

ing a reduction in horsepower of Sprint Cup cars next season, since speeds continue to rise as teams find ways to coax more power out of engines, even though the basic engine components haven’t changed in decades. Some have even suggested that NASCAR, which now runs V-8 engines rarely used in passenger cars, should switch to six- or even four-cylinder engines, like those in the passenger cars that Sprint Cup cars are intended to represent. Jeff Gordon said he hopes there are no changes forthcoming. “I am not in favor of it,” he said. “I think the reason they want to do that is to keep the cars bunched up more, and it will do that. “I would like to see things that create more passing that go along with that. I think more horsepower creates more passing, but it also can create more of a gap between teams, cars and drivers. So whatever is going to help the sport grow and continue to be competitive and entertaining, I am going to support it.” Gordon said he hopes that if changes are made, they’re based on lots of research, instead of something simple, like reducing the air flow into the engine by way of restrictor plates or tapered spacers that are already in use. “What I do like is that they are planning for it with the teams, with the manufacturers, with the engine builders, to do it the right way instead of just throwing a plate on it,” he said. He said that if horsepower is reduced, drivers and teams will compensate by trying to increase corner speeds, and speed in the corners places more strain on the tires than speed on the straightaways. “We are actually going to be carrying more speed through the corner and not less,” he said.

Historic Barque Eagle visits Morehead City LANCE CPL. UNIQUE B. ROBERTS MCAS CHERRY POINT

As a ship measuring 295 feet long and nearly 150 feet high pulled into the Morehead City port, people gathered from all over Eastern North Carolina to see the rare sight and take a journey through its decks. “As one of America’s tallest ships, it was absolutely beautiful,” said Darleen Jones, the community plans and liaison specialist with Cherry Point. “It’s amazing that it is still in such good condition considering the age. The detailed woodwork on the ship is impressive and it is obvious that it has been well maintained.” The Coast Guard Barque Eagle (WIX-327), a training vessel, was docked in the Morehead City port March 28 – 30 for guests to learn the ships historical importance. The ship is the seventh U.S. vessel to hold the name Eagle. It was built by the Germans in 1936 and was taken by the U.S. as war reparations after World War II. During the Eagle’s visit, guests toured the ship and learned how cadets are tested and challenged while living at sea, the different places the Eagle travels and a brief history of the ship. “I learned that the cadets from the Coast Guard Academy are the ones who sail and maintain the ship,” said Jones. “I think it is important to use the resources we have to teach the younger generation the intricacies of sailing an older vessel.” The Eagle and her crew train future Coast Guard officers and is a seagoing classroom for 175 cadets and instructors from the academy. It also serves as a community outreach venue during its summer tours accross the globe, according to Cmdr. Karrie Trebbe, the Coast Guard’s North Carolina sector logistics department head. Although the Eagle doesn’t come to the shores of the North Carolina coast often, the Eagle plans to return in the future. “I would recommend everyone see it, especially those who have a love for sailing,” said Jones. “It is a piece of history.” For more information on the Eagle and its touring schedule, visit the Coast Guard Academy website at http://www.cga.edu/eagle/.

The Coast Guard’s Barque Eagle (WIX-327) rests in the dock of the Morehead City port Friday. The Eagle, built in 1936, is a training ship used by the Coast Guard Academy for instructing and honing the leadership skills of officer candidates and crew members. While at the academy, officer candidates spend anywhere from a week on the Eagle to two months at sea.

A display of a life raft rests on the Coast Guard’s Barque Eagle (WIX-327) deck Friday, while docked at the Morehead City port. The ship is currently the seventh vessel to hold the name Eagle. The ship was taken by the U.S. as war reparations from the Germans after World War II. Today, the ship serves as a training platform for officer candidates at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy.

Children give Capt. Raymond Palmer a drawing of the Coast Guard Barque Eagle (WIX-327) Friday. The Eagle was docked in Morehead City March 28 – 30 for public tours. Guests touring the ship learned the Eagle’s historical importance, the mission of the Coast Guard Academy cadets and its one of a kind design.

Members of the local community tour the Coast Guard’s Barque Eagle (WIX-327) Friday at the Morehead City port. The Eagle docked at the state port March 28 – 30. The Barque Eagle is a training platform for officer candidates at the United States Coast Guard Academy.

Child Abuse is a serious problem that negatively affects the well-being of children and families. During the month of April, Cherry Point’s Marine and Family Programs is raising awareness about child abuse to help equip parents and caregivers with resources to provide safe, stable and nurturing environments for children. “National Child Abuse Prevention month is a campaign that surfaced as a result of child abuse and child neglect, said Victor O. Foster, the prevention and education specialist with Marine and Family Programs. “This is something that impacts everyone; it affects all races, ethnic groups, economic groups and ranks. Child abuse and neglect is any act or failure to act on the part of a parent or caretaker which results in death, serious physical or emotional harm, sexual abuse or exploitation of a child or an act or failure to act which presents an imminent risk of serious harm, according to The Federal Child Abuse Prevention and Treatment Act. This month, Marine and Family Programs adopted a new program called the Positive Parenting Program. Family Advocacy Programs sponsors the Positive Parenting Program, which presents parents and caregivers with a variety of tip sheets, one-on-one sessions and seminars that arm parents with the necessary tools to decrease the number of child abuse cases. “We’re very excited about the new program, said Foster. “The Positive Parenting Program is geared to

help parents with children from infancy to teenagers. Aside from Positive Parenting Program, the Marine Corps mandates that service members attend annual training that identifies signs of child abuse and prevention and response measures. All Marines are required to report all instances of child abuse or suspected child abuse. “We must all reinforce that the safety and well-being of our children is a shared community responsibility, said Jessica L. Wright, the acting Under Secretary of Defense for personnel and readiness. “It may only take a minute to recognize a child in need, reach out to a parent under stress, or report suspected abuse. During April, the Cherry Point’s Family Advocacy Program will host seminars, exhibits, and training to promote awareness of child abuse related issues. The program also plans to partner with the Craven County Department of Social Services Havelock Office and the Community Coalition for Craven County children to host a National Child Abuse Prevention Month kickoff event April 4 at the Walter B. Jones Park in Havelock. For more information on events supporting National Child Abuse Prevention Month, contact the Family Advocacy Program at (252) 466-3264. For more information about child abuse awareness and prevention and the many resources available, contact the Family Advocacy Program at (252) 466-3264, the Department of Defense child safety hotline at (887) 790-1197 or the Marine Corps DSTRESS line at (887) 476-7734.
