When a bank makes an error and is expecting payment, what do you do? What happens when you do not have the money and do not know where to go for help? Frank G. McKain Jr. was a sergeant stationed in Washington, D.C., when a bank error caused him to seek financial help in 2005. The bank made a mistake, he said, that resulted in two payments being due in the same month. “I didn’t really know what to do at the time but my staff noncommissioned officer at the time recommended that I seek help from the Navy Marine Corps Relief Society,” said McKain, now a chief warrant officer with Headquarters and Headquarters Squadron’s Installation Personnel Administration Center. “I went to their location at the Navy Yard, told them about the situation, and they told me they would help me take care of everything.” With help from the society, McKain was able to make both payments on time and set up an allotment with them to repay the loan at zero percent interest. The NMCRS is a non-profit organization established to help service members in need by offering financial assistance and educating service members about financial management and planning. McKain is only one of thousands of the society’s success stories. More than 65,000 Marines and Sailors in 2013 throughout the Department of Defense received more than $49 million in financial assistance. McKain said the society’s volunteers are

MWSS-271 Marine named Chef of the Quarter LANCE CPL. UNIQUE B. ROBERTS MCAS CHERRY POINT

Three food service specialists with Headquarters and Headquarters Squadron competed in the Cherry Point Chef of the Quarter competition at the station mess hall March 14. The competition tested the chefs’ abilities to prepare, present and serve meals that fuel the Corps. Pfc. Brandon Ruiz, a food service specialist with Marine Wing Support Squadron 271, earned the first place trophy with a dish featuring strawberry glazed salmon, citrus wild rice and roasted green beans. For dessert he presented the judges with gelato alla vaniglia affogato in café with bruscato. “Everyone that I’ve ever worked with in the chow hall inspired me to cook this meal in some way,” said Ruiz. “Since

I’ve been here I’ve been taught valuable lessons and I used those in preparing my meal.” As each Marine finished presenting their food, judges critiqued their performance and evaluated the overall quality of the dishes, according to Staff Sgt. William F. Taylor, the galley captain of the mess hall. The quality of the meals showed the Marines’ abilities in the kitchen, according to Taylor. “Today each dish was different,” said Taylor. “The Marines were able to cook anything from stuffed chicken to stuffed pork chops; we even saw a different type of glazed salmon. The Marines really stepped outside of their comfort zone during the competition. ” See CHEF page A7

News Briefs

It’s all good

Sexual Assault Awareness Month April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month and Cherry Point is hosting a few events throughout the month to highlight the importance of sexual assault prevention and response. The campaign theme for this year is “Live Our Values: Step Up to Stop Sexual Assault.” Cherry Point, 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing and the Naval Heath Clinic will be holding an essay contest supporting the theme. The top three essays will be published in The Windsock during the month of April. The theme of the essay is, “What can we do to prevent sexual assault?” Length of the essay should be between 500 and 1,000 words. Deadline for submission is Monday. Cherry Point is also conducting a poster contest intended to increase the knowledge and understanding of the Sexual Assault Prevention and Response Program. There will be three entry categories: anime, free hand drawn and Photo Shop (cannot contain copyrighted images and quotes must be sighted). Poster must be 24 by 36 inches and saved to a CD as a Photoshop document (PSD) file, must be in good taste with no slang and be submitted no later than March 31 to your Uniform Victim Advocate. The posters will be displayed along the route of Cherry Point’s 1st SAAM 5K April 25. Registration is required to participate in the run. Contact your unit’s UVA for more information or to register. You can also register the morning of the run. The run is open to active duty military only.

Toddler, child seats recalled Graco Children’s Products, Inc. informed the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Feb. 7 that it would be recalling model years 2009 – 2013 toddler and booster child restraints. Those models include; Cozy Cline, Comfort Sport, Classic Ride 50, My Ride 65, My Ride with Safety Surround, My Ride 70, Size 4 Me 70, Smart Seat, Nautilus, Nautilus Elite, and Argos 70. Graco informed NHTSA it would be including an additional 403,222 seats in this recall, including certain model years from 2006 – 2014 on March 7. Models include Argos 70 Elite; Ready Ride; Step 2; My Ride 65 with Safety Surround; My Size 70; Head Wise 70 with Safety Surround; Nautilus 3-in-1; Nautilus Plus; and Smart Seat with Safety Surround. The defect involves difficulty in unlatching the harness buckle. In some cases, the buckle becomes stuck in a latched condition and can’t be opened. It may be difficult to remove the child from the restraint, increasing the risk of injury in the event of a vehicle crash, fire, or other emergency in which a prompt exit from the vehicle is required. Graco is offering to replace the buckle with a new design, free of charge. Registered owners will be notified beginning early April and offered the free replacement buckle. All other owners may contact Graco at 1-800-345-4109 (toll-free), 1-330-869-7225, or online at www.consumerservices@gracobaby.com.

LT. KYRON D. BELL 2ND MARINE AIRCRAFT WING CHAPLAIN

If you were to run into me one day in passing and ask me how I am doing, I am likely to reply, “It’s all good!” While this may sound like street talk or something awfully close to it, I really don’t intend it that way. This statement is actually a summarization of one my favorite passages of scripture that is found in Romans 8:28, “And we know that all things work together for good to them who love God and are called according to His purpose.” One thing I’ve discovered about the Bible since becoming a minister is that it’s worth knowing a little bit about the author of the particular book you’re reading. The Apostle Paul is the author of the book of Romans. If it were the case that Paul never had any serious issues or any trying hardships to deal with, I’m not sure it would be as meaningful hearing from him that all things work together for good -- Because, after all, that would be easy for him to say--what has he gone through? If the line of reasoning is that it takes someone who has gone through some pretty extreme trials and tribulations to be qualified to speak authoritatively about trials and tribulations, then Paul is the man! We are told that Paul, since his encounter with the Lord, had been stoned and left for dead, stripped and beaten, wrongfully thrown in jail, dragged and beaten and shipwrecked without food. But in the midst of these things, Paul says, “all things work together for good.”

Recently, I explored this passage in its original language using the Greek New Testament dictionary and made an interesting discovery on the words “work together.” Those two words are the translation of the Greek word “sunergeo” pronounced soon-erg-eh’-o, meaning joint work and cooperative action. The English word “synergy” comes from this Greek word. Synergy is when the result is greater than the sum of the parts. It is created when things work in concert together to create an outcome that is, in some way, of more value than the total of what the individual input is. The idea our all-knowing God can take a seemingly negative event and work it together with another seemingly negative event and cause this experience to produce an outcome that is for our good, defies our human understanding. I have a young daughter -- a very sweet girl I might add -- and I can usually anticipate some tears whenever I tell her we are going to see the doctor. This is because she has come to associate the doctor’s visit with receiving a shot. As her daddy, it pains me to see her react this way knowing that she doesn’t want to go. Yet, I still have to take to her to the doctor’s office against her desires because I know that, while unpleasant, that shot is for her good. I can only imagine what it must be like for our Heavenly Father to give us that which is good by allowing us to pass through that which does not feel good. It is in the infinite wisdom of God that we are encouraged to trust that He knows how to work out our situation for our eternal good.

According to Cpl. Ashley N. Rowback, in order to stay competitive in today’s shrinking Marine Corps, Marines need to excel constantly. Rowback joined the Marine Corps as an air support operations operator in 2011 and strives to stay ahead of her peers, as evidenced by recent recognition from the commanding general of 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing, Maj. Gen. Robert F. Hedelund. Hedelund awarded Rowback a certificate of commendation for her recent and ongoing accomplishments. Rowback tries to set the example for her Marines on and off duty, she said. “You can never stop,” said Rowback. “If you have 10 Marine Corps Institute courses completed, push and finish two more. Always strive to be better and stay hungry.” Rowback believes her mission at Marine Air Support Squadron 1 is an important one. “We support the troops on the ground,” she said. “Without us, they wouldn’t have close-air support or supplies so it so important that we do not fail.” The most challenging aspect of her job is staying grounded and maintaining composure when situations get hectic, according to Rowback. Constantly learning and maintaining proficiency helps Rowback grow as an air support operator and as a noncommissioned officer. “You need to stay up to date in this job,” said the Gloversville N.Y., native. Rowback looks forward to her future in the Corps and hopes to advance her career as a Marine Security Guard.

More than 100 Marines with Engineer Company, Marine Wing Support Squadron 271, conducted counterimprovised explosive device training at Camp Lejeune March 11 – 12. During the training, the Marines learned the necessary skills to recognize and help eliminate IEDs in a combat environment. In Iraq and Afghanistan, IEDs caused more casualties than all other weapon systems combined, according to Staff Sgt. Jessie C. McDonald, an engineer assistant with MWSS-271. “The skills these Marines are learning are important because it reinforces the training the Marines have already had,” said McDonald. “The training also prepares them for operations in a forward environment.” The Marines learned how to properly use detection equipment, such as holly sticks and compact metal de-

tectors, to confirm IED placement, said McDonald. “The gear is essential because it confirms the presence of an IED.” The Marines also reviewed how to conduct mounted patrols, weapons safety and IED awareness techniques. During combat operations, Marines constantly look for threats that would affect the mission. IEDs are usually hidden from plain view, so Marines look for signs of IED placement, such as disturbed earth or out-of-place items. Once a Marine has identified a possible IED, the area is cleared of personnel and equipment. A trained Marine then uses IED detection equipment to confirm the IED before requesting assistance from explosive ordnance disposal technicians. While the Marines learned of IED awareness and responsiveness, they also grew closer as a unit, which increases their effectiveness in their overall mission. “By reinforcing small unit leadership, team building skills, and overall comprehension of IED detection and

mounted and un-mounted patrols, it allows the Marines to strengthen unit cohesion,” said McDonald. The culminating event consisted of a vehicle-mounted patrol, where the Marines encountered multiple IED scenarios. “The training has been going pretty well,” said Cpl. Johnnie D. Raulerson, a metalworker with MWSS-271. “We don’t get the opportunity to train like this all the time, but it teaches our junior Marines things that are essential in the Marine Corps.” C-IED training is important, not just for the Marines of Engineer Company, but for each Marine deployed in a combat environment, according to Raulerson. “This information is important to everyone in the Marine Corps,” said Raulerson. “It could save everyone’s life. As a welder, I have deployed twice to Afghanistan – you never know when you’re going to get pulled to fight overseas and that’s why it’s important.”

It’s valuable to have them see where their work goes. When a bomb drops, it’s thanks to them.” “It was definitely a great experience for us,” said Cpl. March marks Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month NAVAL HEALTH CLINIC CHERRY POINT

March is National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month, and blue is the official color to represent this deadly cancer. Colorectal cancer is the third deadliest cancer in the United States for both men and women. According to the American Cancer Society, with proper screening and early treatment, the five-year survival rate is 90% and approximately half of all colorectal cancer cases could be prevented with regular screening. Screening is vital to saving your life. Don’t become ‘blue’ over something that can be easily preventable. Colorectal cancer develops in the colon or the rectum. The colon is a muscular

tube in your abdomen that is about five feet long, also called the large bowel or large intestine. This is the location in the digestive system where water and salt from the food are absorbed and the waste material is stored. The waste material, or feces, then enters the final six inches of the digestive system, known as the rectum. In the lining of the colon and rectum is where polyps (abnormal growths of tissue) are found through a procedure called a colonoscopy. Most colorectal cancers start in polyps. Characteristically, colorectal cancers develop slowly over several years. This is why a routine screening colonoscopy is considered the ‘gold standard’ of tests. During the colonoscopy, cancer can be

detected and also non-cancerous polyps can be removed before they are given the time needed to grow and become cancerous. Late stage symptoms of colorectal cancer may include: rectal bleeding, blood in the feces, dark or black colored stools, change in shape of stool, lower abdominal cramping, unnecessary urge to have a bowel movement, prolonged constipation or diarrhea and unintentional weight loss. In the early stages of the cancer there are typically no symptoms to warn you. This is the reason you must get screened regularly and know your risks. Are you at risk? Anyone can develop colorectal cancer, but some people have a higher risk. Risk factors include: age 50 and older, tobacco use, being overweight or

CAMP SCHWAB, Japan - Force Reconnaissance Marines executed fast-rope techniques from MV-22B Osprey tiltrotor aircraft March 12 at Camp Schwab, Okinawa, Japan. Fast-roping is one of the techniques used during helicopter rope suspension training for Marines, so that they can execute tactical insertions where rotary aircraft landings are impractical. “Fast-roping is designed for quick insertion into any (danger area) or neutral zone on a battlefield,” said Staff Sgt. Victor A. Garrett, an intelligence specialist with Force Reconnaissance Company, 3rd Reconnaissance Battalion, 3rd Marine Division, III Marine Expeditionary Force. “One day these Marines may have to go into an operational area quickly, so this … prepares us for that mission.” When an aircraft, facilitating rope suspension techniques, reaches its designated drop zone, the HRST master lowers a properly secured rope to the ground to ensure it is safe before

allowing the participating Marines to descend. Once the Marines execute the fast-rope technique, they keep the rope taut for follow-on personnel. “The Osprey requires a very large landing zone to land safely,” said Capt. Andrew S. Bohn, an infantry officer with Force Recon Co. “So it’s important that Marines develop that insert capability.” Fast-roping out of an Osprey provides a unique training opportunity for Marines because it is different from fast-roping out of other types of aircraft, like helicopters. “Fast-roping from a CH-53E Super Stallion is straight-forward,” said Bohn. “The (wind from the rotors) pushes you straight down. Working with the Osprey, the unique challenge is the rope comes out at an angle.” The Marines know that muscle memory is necessary for mastering the mission-essential techniques, so they could be executed with ease, according to Bohn. “It’s easy to slide down the rope once or twice,” said Bohn. “But to really become proficient takes a lot of repetitions.”

Marines with an end of active service date greater than three months from when the drive starts can log onto Marine Online at www.mol.usmc.mil and set an allotment to support the NMCRS. Paper form allotments are also available and can be obtained through unit representatives. Additionally, anyone interested in making a donation can log onto www.nmcrsfunddrive.org and set up an allotment or set up a one-time donation via credit card. Finally, cash and check donations are also accepted. Contribution forms should be filled out in every case to keep track of command credit. “Without the donations, the society wouldn’t have anything to help out our fellow Marines and Sailors,” said McKain. To support the NMCRS with a donation, contact your unit representative or go to www.nmcrsfunddrive.org.

Wright accepts her new duties during Women’s History Month, 71 years after the Marine Corps began accepting women into recruit training. “It’s a historic day, but I don’t want to make this about women. It’s really just about being a Marine and taking the opportunities to serve the Marine Corps,” said Wright. “I wouldn’t say I opened any new doors for women in the Marine Corps. There are plenty of opportunities; we just haven’t reached them due to the sheer number of women in the Marine Corps.” Wright enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1989 and deployed in support of Operation Desert Shield, Desert Storm, Enduring Freedom and Unified Protector. The command wishes Sgt. Maj. Gallegos the best on his future assignments, and they look forward to working with Sgt. Maj. Wright, said Col. Scott Benedict, commanding officer of 24th MEU. “I’m looking forward to having Sgt. Maj. Wright come onboard the MEU and having another two years of fantastic leadership,” said Benedict. “She brings a great background to the unit; she has experience with expeditionary units and also experience with many of the Marine Corps’ major operations over the last 20 years. She brings the type of leadership we demand from our Sgt. Maj. and I think she’s going to fit in just fine.” Gallegos left the MEU to assume duties as sergeant major for the 2nd Marine Expeditionary Brigade. “I’m going to miss the Marines,” said Gallegos. “We can spend millions of dollars on weapons, ships and gear, but it would never work without the Marines to operate it. They are our biggest asset.”

As the three competitors battled to earn the title Chef of the Quarter, they helped increase unit cohesion and build camaraderie with fellow Marines at the mess hall. The Marines are encouraged to select an assistant during the competition who can help them prepare ingredients before cooking, said Taylor. “The assistant is not allowed to help the Marine cook, but they are allowed to provide the Marine with information and help with preparation,” said Taylor. “We are all here with one common goal and that’s to create food for the Corps.” Chef of the Quarter winners compete for Chef of the Year and an opportunity to attend the Culinary Institute of America, Hyde Park, N.Y.

A sea of green hats, four-leaf clovers and “Kiss me, I’m Irish” tshirts filled the streets as brouhaha erupted on Emerald Isle during the 23rd annual St. Patrick’s Day Festival March 15. The festival had a variety of attractions and family oriented activities. Over 100 vendors offered everything from arts and crafts to a petting zoo and rides. More than 30,000 participants flooded the streets with green under a beautiful sunny sky. “It is a great way to kick off the season,” said Laniey Gottuso, a recreation coordinator for the festival. Each year the party is a huge success, partially due to the fact that the festival has a little something for everyone, said Gottuso. “It has a great kids section and gives you an all-around fun time for the family,” said Lance Cpl. Ken Orrico, a legal services specialist with Headquarters Support Battalion, Marine Corps Installations East. Orrico attended the festival with his family and plans to paint the Isle green next year. “The festival was a blast and I can’t wait to come out again next year,” said Orrico.

Families enjoyed a petting zoo featuring a variety of animals during Emerald Isle’s 23rd annual St. Patrick’s Day Festival March 15. The animals belonged to Oak Grove Stables Petting Zoo and were one of more than 100 vendors featured during the festival, which drew a crowd of more than 30,000.

Marine, Ghana native, serves with pride LANCE CPL. JOSHUA HEINS MCAS CHERRY POINT

In the United States, winning the lottery means winning a pile of cash. In Ghana, West Africa, the lottery means a new life, a U.S. visa, and for one Marine, a chance to serve. Lance Cpl. Andrews K. Nsenkyire, an administrative specialist with Cherry Point’s Installation Personnel Administration Center, was living in Ghana when he found out he had won a national visa lottery. Nsenkyire was one of the 5,832 applicants from Ghana, a country of more than 24 million citizens, who won the opportunity to apply for an immigration visa in 2012. “One day, when I was in high school, a teacher came into class and passed out some forms telling us to fill them out, Nsenkyire explained. “I did not know what the forms were for, and to be honest, I had completely forgotten about it. Nsenkyire went on with his life, with no explanation about the paperwork and no clue his life was about to change forever. Months later, Nsenkyire’s teacher, the same who encouraged him to complete the visa forms, gave Nsenkyire the news. He had won the national lottery. “I was happy for the chance to apply for a visa, he said. “I had to go to the U.S. Embassy three times for interviews, to take picture and fill out forms. Money was tight so Nsenkyire sold most of his personal belongings, including his computer, television and motorcycle, to fund the visa process and travel expenses. With a little help from his visa sponsor, he was on a flight to the U.S. in May 2012. “I didn’t come from a rich family, he said. “But I always wanted to join the military to protect people who can’t defend themselves. Nsenkyire attempted to join the Army in Ghana but was not accepted. Driven by his desire to serve and aided by his new life in the U.S., Nsenkyire found the closest recruiting office in Alexandria, Va. Nsenkyire walked into an Armed Forces Recruiting office for the first time in June of 2012 where he began

exploring his opportunities as a Marine, almost by chance, he said. “Once I walked in the office, the first person I saw was a Marine, he said. “I told him I wanted to join the Army and his response was, ‘No, you don’t!’ Then he explained to me how good I would be as a Marine. That was the first time Nsenkyire had ever heard of the Marines because they do not have a Marine Corps in Ghana. He made his decision after he asked his brother about the Marines and he learned they are considered the best fighting force in the world. Two months after arriving in the U.S., Nsenkyire began the enlistment process, which took about fivemonths. He joined the Delayed Entry Program with Recruiting Station Frederick, Md. Nsenkyire could not wait to depart for boot camp after joining. “I was supposed to leave on April 8, 2013, said Nsenkyire. “I was always talking to my recruiter, Sgt. William Howard – I wanted to go early. One day he called me and said he had room in his schedule and I that I would be shipping out in January. After graduating from recruit training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island, S.C., Nsenkyire completed Marine Combat Training at Camp Geiger and Military Occupational Specialty school at Camp Johnson. Nsenkyire arrived at Cherry Point in the summer of 2013 and quickly gained a reputation for professionalism and reliability. As a personnel clerk at IPAC’s quality control department, Nsenkyire earned a meritorious promotion to Lance Cpl. in November 2013. He recently earned the recognition of Air Station Marine of the Quarter, and plans to continue his track record of success, on and off duty. “I help solve people’s problems, Nsenkyire said. “I make sure I do my job perfectly because I’m one of the only people on base who can help with pay issues, so I need to pay attention to every detail. Nsenkyire will soon compete for Marine Corps Installations East’s Marine of the Quarter and hopes to join the noncommissioned officer ranks in the next year.
