NHC TRICARE walk-in Service Centers closing LANCE CPL. JOSHUA R. HEINS MCAS CHERRY POINT

The TRICARE walk-in service center located in Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point’s Naval Health Clinic will close April 1. All TRICARE services from that point on will be provided online at tricare. mil or at 1-877-TRICARE (1-877-8742273). TRICARE is a health insurance program for active duty, reserve and retired military members and their families, as well as the National Guard. More than nine million people participate in TRICARE. TRICARE walk-in service centers located across the United States will no longer provide walk-in service due to technology that makes TRICARE more accessible via the internet and toll-free telephone numbers. The changes will help facilitate administrative tracking and ease of access for patients. The TRICARE website has received recent updates, said Laurie Varner, the public affairs officer for the NHC. The website answers frequently asked questions without requiring a patient to visit an office. Service members and other TRICARE beneficiaries should expect no changes to actual healthcare services due to the closures, said Navy Lt. Nandu Polavarapu, the health care business department head with the NHC. Patients will still be able to seek medical treatment as they always have. What will change, however, is how patients enroll, check on claims, change their assigned primary care manager or find answers to general TRICARE questions. “One of the biggest effects will be the medical check-in process when people re-

During the training, the Marines of Battery B learned how to mount, maintain, aim and fire the M-203 grenade launcher. The M-203 is a single shot, 40mm grenade launcher that attaches to the M16A4 service rifle and M-4 carbine. You Said “I’m Sorry” But Why Isn’t it Working?

First female MEU sergeant major Sgt. Maj. Lanette Wright is scheduled to become the Marine Corps’ first female sergeant major of a Marine expeditionary unit Friday. Wright will take over as the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit’s sergeant major at Camp Lejeune, relieving Sgt. Maj. Octaviano Gallegos of his duties. Gallegos will assume the post of sergeant major for 2nd Marine Expeditionary Brigade. Wright currently serves in the command inspector general’s office with 2nd Marine Logistics Group.

Women’s History Month March marks the national observance of Women’s History Month, a time to celebrate, recognize and salute those women who have contributed to the nation and to the Marine Corps. This year’s theme for National Women’s History Month is “celebrating women of character, courage, and commitment.” “Since their inception in the women’s reserve under the motto ‘Free a Marine to fight’ during World War II, women have demonstrated success in the Corps through the resilience and indomitable spirit that characterize Marines,” said Brig. Gen. Robert F. Castellvi, commanding general of Marine Corps Installations East, in a recent letter. Castellvi went on to say, “Today, generations of women continue to break barriers and shatter the glass ceiling that once restricted them to specific military occupations. Specifically, in 2013, three women Marines were the first in our Corps’ history to graduate from Marine Corps infantry training. “We honor the service of women Marines of the past and those who continue to proudly wear the uniform in service to our great nation. Commanders are encouraged to conduct programs and promote participation in observance events, both on base and in the local community.”

All couples will experience conflict in their relationship sooner or later. The measure of pain, associated with conflict, is dependent on the two persons involved. You will be pleased to know that conflict in the relationship doesn’t mean you are with the wrong person. Discussing a topic like conflict in intimate relationships can get pretty lengthy and that is precisely why I will not attempt to deal with that topic today. Rather, I would like to share a nugget on how to patch things up when the conflict in your relationship has led to either one or the both of you getting hurt and upset. Here’s the scenario. You and your partner were having an ordinary conversation and it suddenly goes downhill fast. What began as an orderly exchange of words quickly became a disorderly collision of words with the two of you talking over the other at full volume. The final touch you added to that verbal confrontation to ensure victory was you calling your partner a name you knew would inflict the most harm. Now let’s deal with this situation. First of all, you shouldn’t have said those words. There is no good rea-

son why you should ever use mean or hurtful words toward the one you love. There’s no quicker way to undermine everything you are working to build with your lover than this egregious act. But we’re human and sometimes we have those moments we wish we could do over, right? So when you have “mistakenly” spoken harshly and disrespectfully to your partner, what is the best way to mend that situation? With an apology. I think Dr. Gary Chapman nails it when he talks about the five apology languages. While I do not have the space in this article to deal with all five, I will speak on one of them—“expressing regret.” Saying “I’m sorry” is simply not enough to make that situation right for a couple of reasons. Number one, that statement does not address the reason for which you are apologizing. Number two, that statement doesn’t communicate that you understand how deeply your behavior and words have hurt your partner. If this is your partner’s particular apology language, then anything short of this kind of all-encompassing apology will be seen as empty to him or her.

Cpl. Jessica M. Ames follows a tight schedule. Timeliness and reliability are prerequisites for Ames as the duty driver for the commanding officer of Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point. Ames joined the Corps as a food service specialist. Her professionalism and maturity on and off duty placed her ahead of her peers, making her a perfect fit for her current duties. Ames actively assists the commanding officer’s protocol officer, helping to plan and coordinate events and appointments for Col. Chris Pappas III. “My main purpose as the commanding officer’s driver is to ensure that he arrives at all of his events, on and off base, safely and on time,” said Ames. “I also assist with a large amount of protocol and administrative work by setting up meetings and communicating with Marines all around the Corps.” The commanding officer and his staff have tight schedules so proficiency and communication are key, according to Ames. Ames, an Ocean City, Md. native, says that her duties as the commanding officer’s driver will help her excel as a Marine in the future. She hopes to further her career by entering the Marine Aide Program where she hopes to prepare meals for general-level leaders. “What I enjoy most about my job is that I know for a fact that I play a direct role in the mission accomplishment of the base,” said Ames. Off duty, Ames is an avid gymnast and enjoys spending time with friends and family.

VMAT-203 Harrier pilots train during Exercise Broken Resolution LANCE CPL. UNIQUE B. ROBERTS MCAS CHERRY POINT

More than 120 Marines with Marine Attack Training Squadron 203 returned to Cherry Point from a six-week exercise at Marine Corps Air Station Yuma, Ariz., March 7, concluding their annual Broken Resolution training. Exercise Broken Resolution helps prepare AV-8B Harrier student pilots for air-to-surface and close-air support missions. Broken Resolution is one of three training evolutions the squadron conducts per year. The squadron’s main purpose is to train new fixed-wing aircraft pilots to operate and fly the Harrier before they transition into a fleet squadron. Training in Yuma gives the student pilots a chance to fly in an environment unlike those found around Cherry Point, according to Capt. Derek A. Mills, an instructor pilot with VMAT-203.

“VMAT-203 Marines execute the same daily duties that you see at Cherry Point, but in an environment and airspace that is more conducive to simulate tactical operations,” said Mills. The training gave the student pilots in the squadron a chance to hone their skills in an austere environment, identifying and eliminating training targets with ordnance not usually employed around Cherry Point. “We bring the students to Yuma because of the live fire ranges in the vicinity and because of the generally good flying weather as compared to Cherry Point,” said Capt. Trevor Sutton, the aviation life support systems officerin-charge with VMAT-203. “[In Yuma] they get to employ live weapons such as general purpose bombs, laser guided bombs, global positioning system guided bombs, rockets, firebombs and cluster bombs.” Broken Resolution gave the student pilots an oppor-

tunity to apply operational fundamentals outside of a garrison environment, according to Mills. Working with ground crews, planners, other student pilots and instructors gave the students practical experience with flight operations that reflect the operational tempo of real-world operations, according to Sutton. The training the Marines received in Yuma served as building blocks for future advanced training, according to Sutton. Squadron training is important because it builds unit camaraderie and strengthens unit cohesion, according to Sutton. “The training builds camaraderie because the detachment is away from home field and away from distractions of home life,” said Sutton. “For many of our junior Marines who have not deployed before, this was their first taste of operating in a foreign environment.”

MWSS-273 and MACS-2 train with South Carolina Air National Guard

CPL. BRADY WOOD

A UH-60 Black Hawk lands at McEntire Joint National Guard Base for refueling by Marines with Marine Wing Support Squadron 273, Feb. 27. Marine Air Control Squadron 2, Det. A, and MWSS-273 performed a forward arming and refueling point exercise with the South Carolina Air National Guard in order to increase operational readiness.

CPL. BRADY WOOD MARINE CORPS AIR STATION BEAUFORT

MARINE CORPS AIR STATION BEAUFORT, S.C. - Marine Wing Support Squadron 273 and Marine Air Control Squadron 2, Detachment A, participated in a joint forward arming and refueling point exercise with the South Carolina Air National Guard at the McEntire Joint National Guard Base, Feb. 24-28. During the exercise, Marines performed assault landing zone operations, as well as helicopter landing zone operations. Assault landing zones and helicopter

landing zones are expeditionary landing sites that air traffic control Marines use in a deployed environment. Before setting up the ALZ and HLZ, a site survey must first be conducted. This allows ATC Marines to determine conditions are right for aircraft to land in the area. Conditions include wind direction and, for an ALZ, they also need to survey if the ground is stable enough to support aircraft such as a C-130 Hercules. McEntire is a self-supporting installation that is uniquely situated to provide multiple training opportunities for joint

military and civilian operations. “We were proud to offer our support to the United States Marines in this important exercise,” said Col. Michael Manning, commanding officer of the 169th Fighter Wing at McEntire Joint National Guard Base. “Any chance we have to train with our sister-service counterparts is an opportunity to share knowledge, which in turn promotes cohesiveness during future operations or contingencies.” According to 1st Lt. Christopher Spotts, the air traffic manager for the 245th Air Traffic Control Squadron and project offi-

cer for the FARP exercise, joint operations are important because that is now the way of the world in theater and home-station operations. “Many bases have already transitioned to the joint base concept and more will in the future,” said Spotts. “Exercises like this FARP allow us to interact with other services and will prove beneficial during actual deployment operations.” By hosting the Marines, the exercise gave soldiers at McEntire the opportunity to trade information and practices. Each military branch does things differently, but the common thread is achieving the mission. Soldiers learned Marine Corps hand and arm signals while Marines got familiar with different aircraft such as the UH-60 Black Hawk. “It also allows us to see how the Army conducts business,” said Staff Sgt. Enrique Pacheco, the operations chief for the MWSS-273 Air Operations Company. “It also allows them to get to know our standard operating procedures, so that they know what to expect when they are in an actual FARP with a Marine Corps unit overseas, said Pacheco” Air traffic control Marines got a lot from the exercise as well. “This [exercise] allowed their aircrew to maintain critical task proficiency, as well as expose our air traffic controllers to a type of operation they usually only experience at overseas locations,” said Pacheco. With more bases transitioning to the joint military status, exercises that bring together and benefit multiple branches of the military can increase the cohesiveness during future operations or contingencies.

Marine Aircraft Group 24 conducted a max-launch of 13 helicopters assigned to Marine Light Attack Helicopter Squadron 367 and Marine Heavy Helicopter Squadron 463. The two units coordinated with each other to fly the aircraft to Kauai, Hawaii before returning to Oahu. “While HMLA-367 and HMH-463 are flying, (Marine Wing Support Detachment 24) and (Marine Aviation Logistics Squadron 24) will be on the ground to provide forward arming and refueling points,” said Maj. Jeff Marantette, a future operations officer with MAG-24. “It gives the MAG a chance to work as a whole and show how we operate, because that doesn’t happen very often.” After refueling at Dillingham Airfield, the aircraft completed their max-launch with a flyby over Marine Corps Base Hawaii before landing.

Marines, Marine veterans and international service members will participate in the fourth annual Marine Corps Trials March 7 – 12. The Trials provided an opportunity for all service members to further the rehabilitation of their minds, bodies and spirits through competition and camaraderie. Several athletes teeter on the Paralympics qualification line and used the Marine

Corps Trials as a stepping-stone to their ultimate goal of becoming a Paralympian. Col. Willard Buhl, commanding officer of Wounded Warrior Regiment, referred to the athletes as the best of the 9/11-generation. “Our motto for the Wounded Warrior Regiment is ‘Etiam in Pugna,’ – Still in the Fight. The men and women in front of you are still in the fight, and it’s about

what they can do, not what they can’t do. It’s about their abilities.” Buhl said the Trials are an opportunity for Marines, veterans and allies to step out of the hospitals and barracks to compete and share the spirit of competition. It’s also an opportunity to share ideas and challenges that ally militaries and nations face. The 16th Sgt. Maj. of the Marine Corps, Carlton W. Kent, addressed the athletes and audience and applauded the spirit and motivation the athletes bring with them. “If you look out here, these warriors bring some spirit to the field,” Kent said. “They bring everything to the field that we always talk about as a Marine. This is about letting the adversary know that no matter what you do to these warriors, you can never take away their spirit and their motivation.” Kent also thanked the families for their sacrifice, especially during a time of war. “And to the families here today, thank you very much,” Kent said. “Thank you for your sacrifice so much, each and every day. We have been at war for the last 13-years and every one of these warriors joined after 9/11. They knew that they were going to go to combat, but that didn’t stop them from joining.” More than 50 world-class coaches trained and coached the participants, including 2004 Athens-Greece Paralympic swimmer, Daniel Kamber and 2012 Olympic Rifle Team member Jonathan Dewitt. Pay your tax, but watch your backs Protecting yourself against fraud, scams during tax season 1ST LT. EVAN FIELD MCAS CHERRY POINT LEGAL ASSISTANCE OFFICE

Ask a group of Marines or Sailors what their favorite time of year is, and tax season is likely to land pretty low down on the list. For another group, however, tax season might as well come adorned with candy canes and wrapped in a bright red bow – tax scammers. There are various tax scams that a service member might face throughout the year, but many of these schemes peak during filing season as people prepare their tax returns. Add the fact that tax preparation can be an unfamiliar and confusing ordeal, conditions are ripe for a thief or con artist to strike and get away before the victim is even aware that anything is amiss. Even if the taxpayer quickly realizes he or she has been targeted, repairing any damage done can be a long, tedious and expensive process.

One common scam involves perpetrators posing as IRS representatives in emails or on the phone, often claiming that additional personal or financial information is needed to process a return or issue a refund. More sophisticated con artists might even claim that funds are due, threaten arrest or legal action if the taxpayer does not make prompt payment by wire transfer or over the phone, and then follow up with further fake emails or phone calls pretending to be law enforcement personnel. The IRS does not initiate any type of electronic communication, including phone calls, emails, text messages or social media contact, to request such information. Also, The IRS does not ask for personal identification numbers, passwords or other confidential access information for financial accounts. Never give personal or financial information over the phone, in response to emails, or on the internet unless you have initiated the contact and are sure of the recipient.

A less obvious scam is tax fraud through the use of identity theft, which has become one of the IRS’s top tax scams to be alert for. In fact, the IRS has assigned more than 3,000 IRS employees to work on identity theft related issues alone, and trained more than 35,000 employees to recognize identity theft indicators and help people victimized by identity theft. Identity theft occurs when someone uses your personal information such as your name, Social Security number or other personally identifying information, without your permission, to commit fraud or other crimes. During tax season, an identity thief can use a legitimate taxpayer’s identity to fraudulently file a tax return and claim the refund. The fraud may not be detected until the taxpayer attempts to file their own return and the IRS rejects the submission as having already been filed. To help protect clients from tax fraud through identify theft, Cherry Point’s Tax Assistance Center validates the SSNs of all individuals who will be listed on the return using their Social Security cards, the service member’s Leave and Earnings Statement, or other official documents that

are not being used to prepare the return itself. This validation process includes the service member now that military identification cards no longer have the service member’s SSN printed on them. The preparer’s goal is to ensure that the SSN listed on the W-2 and other tax records – especially records that are printed out – does in fact belong to the individual being assisted. Service members should expect and encourage their preparers to validate SSNs with official documents to reduce the risk of fraudulent filings. Cherry Point’s Tax Assistance Center serves active duty, reserve, and retired military personnel and their dependents with free preparation and filing. Our office is located in Building 298, down the hall from the DEERS/RAPIDS office. Walk-in hours are 8 a.m. – 4 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and Fridays from 8 a.m. – 1 p.m. A limited number of appointments are available Tuesdays and Wednesdays at 4:30 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. For more information, call 466-2001.

Red, white and blue banners streamed across the ceiling of the Pitt County’s school cafeteria. The area where more than 900 students gather for meals, assemblies and after-hour activities was completely empty, but the staff was hard at work in the kitchen preparing a breakfast for students and their special guests. More than 25 Marines and Sailors with the Cherry Point Single Marine Program talked with students at the Chicod School in Greenville, N.C., March 7, during a National School Breakfast Week event. The service members visited students ranging from pre-kindergarten to eighth grade. Sitting in rows of red, white and blue covered tables, the Marines and Sailors ate with students and shared information about the Marine Corps and Cherry Point. The service members emphasized the importance of healthy living and community involvement, according to Cpl. Christina A. Kelly, an advanced consolidated automatic support system technician with Marine Aviation Logistics Squadron 14. “It was great being able to spend time with the kids, to talk to them and just be there,” said Kelly. “I really enjoyed it.” As the school honored the Marines and their service to the community, the Marines interaction with the students positively influenced both the staff and the students at the school. “When the younger kids walked around giving everyone highfives, it brought a lot of smiles to their faces and ours,” said Kelly. Participating in the event allowed the Marines to show the community a positive representation of Cherry Point and of Marines in general, according to Kelly. Chicod School invited the Marines to assist with the event because of their service to the country. The staff members wanted to acknowledge the Marines’ hard work and dedication to duty. “The kids wanted to meet military members, and the first thing that popped into my mind was Cherry Point,” said Marie W. Floyd, the event coordinator for National School Breakfast Week at Chicod School. “I said, ‘I have to get Marines because you all are our heroes.’ We want [the Marines] to be recognized, too.” The Marines presence and actions inspired everyone at the school, according to Floyd. “Their actions touched each child and it was evident,” said Floyd. “The way the children smiled and acted once they saw the Marines was overwhelming.” The school plans to invite the Marines back in the future, according to Floyd. She thanked the Marines for their professionalism and commitment to the students and the community. “It’s an honor to have (the Marines) here and my kids enjoyed meeting them,” said Floyd.

Between deployments, training, orders and traditions, the military lifestyle can be a new, and sometimes confusing, transition for Marine families. Fortunately, for those who feel lost in the fast-paced lifestyle, Family Readiness Officers provide tools for families to stay informed. The primary job of a FRO is to give military family members options to deal with the hardships of life in the Marine Corps. Their goal is to improve the quality of life for families. Family readiness at home helps Marines and Sailors increase their operational readiness knowing their family at home is taken care of, according to JoAnne Bielecki, the squadron FRO for Marine Attack Squadron 542. “My job as the FRO is to ensure that the Marines, Sailors and their family members are informed and are able to enjoy the highest quality of life while assigned to the squadron, said Bielecki. FROs are a direct contact between families and squadron leadership. FROs provide information to families and keep them as closely involved with their

Marine or Sailor as possible. “Information helps empower Marines and their families, said Bielecki. “The more knowledge one has, the better equipped they are to successfully meet the challenges of the military lifestyle. In addition to providing family members with information and answering questions, FROs organize events to keep families involved and to meet other families in the squadron. FROs regularly schedule events like themed parties, spouse functions, movie nights and family fun days. Helping spouses and children of Marines and Sailors help service members keep focused on day-to-day duties, whether at home or while deployed. FROs know and understand the vital role they play and relish each opportunity to assist service members and their families, according to Bielecki. “I have a reverence for the work I do with military members and their families, said Bielecki. “I truly feel it is a privilege to have a connection with this special demographic. For more information on family services and events, contact your squadron’s FRO.
