MWSS-271 conducts semi-annual training exercise LANCE CPL. GRACE L. WALADKEWICS MCAS CHERRY POINT

Marine Wing Support Squadron 271 Marines went to the field for their semiannual aviation-ground support training operation at the Marine Corps Outlying Field Oak Grove Jan. 6. MWSS-271 provides essential aviation ground support to fixed-wing components of an Aviation Combat Element and all supporting or attached elements of a Marine Aircraft Group. During the training, the Marines practiced base security and reaction to outside attacks and cross trained between sections to improve overall squadron readiness and cohesion. “This training is really beneficial to the Marines because they are putting to use what they are being taught and trained to do,” said Master Sgt. Erik D. Holt, the squadron’s operations chief. “With this training they are becoming more proficient in their (military occupational specialties) and understanding the importance of this type of training which is significant because, as a Marine, you never know what situation you may find yourself in.” The squadron trained as if deployed in a contingency operation. During the base recovery mission, Marines from all sections of the squadron participated in a large-scale simulation of an

out various training missions in combat scenarios throughout the week, said Holt. Motor transport Marines linked up with aircraft rescue firefighters to learn fire prevention and fire fighting. During the training, motor transport Marines, dressed in fire proximity suits, contained and extin-

A Cherry Point squadron received recognition recently for its contribution to a one in a million milestone. Marine Aerial Refueler Transport Squadron 252 received a framed Commemorative coin from Lockheed Martin Corp. Jan. 8, recognizing the squadron’s role in the C130 Hercules’ recent millionth flight-hour. Representatives with Lockheed Martin Corp., a global security, aerospace and information technology com-

pany, presented the framed coin to Lt. Col. Walter Butler, commanding officer of VMGR-252, signifying the squadron’s role in the accomplishment. “This is a great honor for the squadron,” said Butler. “When I first got here, I had over two thousand hours on the legacy which was the previous aircraft. It was kind of hard to transition to something much newer but, after deploying with it, I have become a much stronger advocate for this aircraft because of what it can do.” Butler looks toward the future of the squadron and aircraft and hopes to see other accomplishments, he said. “As we continue down the path and do greater things with the C-130, this platform will continue to be here,” said Butler. “When you look at aircraft from the past and present, you realize that someday your children or grandchildren might be flying these.” The Marine Corps as a whole adopted the C-130 in the 1950s, flying roughly 290 aircraft in different variations in support of at least 13 major operations as part of its contribution to the million flight-hour mark, according to Ray Fajay, director of U.S. government air mobility development with Lockheed Martin Corp. “Going into spring of last year, the C-130 operation fleet literally soared into a new milestone,” said Fajay. “We reached one million flight hours in the operational fleet and VMGR-252 was a part of that.” The C-130 is a four-engine military transport aircraft capable of using unprepared runways for takeoffs and landings. VMGR-252 adopted the aircraft, which can hold up to 3,600 gallons of fuel, in October 1961 and uses it for aerial refueling purposes. “The C-130 is truly a proven aircraft without equal anywhere around the world,” said Fajay.

More than 60 Marines with Cherry Point’s Headquarters and Headquarters Squadron attended the Junior Leadership Development Course at the Training and Education building Jan. 9. Lt. Col. Charles J. Basham, commanding officer of H&HS and Sgt. Maj. David Eldridge, sergeant major of H&HS, initiated the program to re-familiarize junior Marines with the Marine Corps’ leadership traits and principles, allowing them to define their meaning, and assisting them in applying these traits and principles in everyday life. The series of classes are scheduled to occur monthly for all junior Marines within the squadron. “90 percent of the Marine Corps are sergeants and below,” said Basham. “We are preparing junior Marines for leadership by putting tools in their tool bag to better lead and allowing them to take charge in more situations to exercise the leadership skills being taught.” The program compliments the Commandant of the Marine Corps’ “Reawakening” campaign, a Corps-wide effort to help Marines refocus on discipline, said Basham. H&HS leadership hopes to promote a lifelong pursuit of learning within the squadron and want Marines to know the standard they are being held to and what is expected of them, and to always remember that leadership requires making judgment calls, he said. The training helped steer Marines in the direction of leadership. The class-

The 2014 MCAS Cherry Point Air Show will take place May 16-18 aboard MCAS Cherry Point. The show was originally canceled in early December when budget uncertainty and sequestration made the air show unfeasible. The decision to reinstate the show was made after concerns for this year’s budget were addressed with the passing of the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2014. The Blue Angels U.S. Navy Flight Demonstration Team will not perform at this year’s show as they rescheduled another show after Cherry Point canceled in December. We are expecting an exciting show featuring a number of new performers. Catfish Lake Road advisory

A New Year in an Old Book LT. KYRON BELL MARINE AIR CONTROL GROUP 28 CHAPLAIN

As a spiritual leader, I’ve been approached often by people interested in deepening their relationship with God. In response to their interest, I would first encourage them to take time to talk to their Maker on a daily basis. Prayer should not be limited to what is done before a meal, before bed, or when you are in need of help or a favor. Prayer is simply a means to allow us to communicate with God as with a friend.

Talking to God is only half of the relationship. The other half is you hearing from God. Now you have a dialogue. Isn’t that usually how a relationship works? Then I would encourage them to establish a devotional routine whereby time is set apart to read and reflect on the character and will of God and his involvement in human history. It is at this juncture that I would then recommend a year-long Bible reading See BIBLE page A7

State of Legal Residence Question: How can I change my State of Legal Residence for tax purposes?

Catfish Lake Road in Craven and Onslow Counties is off limits to all Cherry Point, 2nd Marine Expeditionary Force and Marine Corps Installations East Marines and Sailors except while engaging in recreational activities. Through traffic on Catfish Lake Road (NC Road Number 1100 in Craven County and NC Road Number 1105 in Jones County) between Highway 70 and Highway 58 is strictly prohibited in accordance with II MEF and MCI-East Order 5100.3. Violation of this order is punishable under the UCMJ. Unpaved portions of Catfish Lake Road may only be used while engaging in lawful recreational activities such as hunting and fishing.

Answer: In order for a Marine to be able to change their state of legal residence for tax purposes, the following information applies: The formula for changing your state of legal residence/domicile is simply stated as follows: physical presence in the new state with the simultaneous intent of making it your permanent home and abandonment of the old state of legal residence/domicile. In most cases, you must actually reside in the new state at the time you to make it your permanent home. Such intent must be clearly indicated. Your intent to make the new state your permanent home may be indicated by certain actions such as: registering to vote; purchasing residential property or an unimproved residential lot; titling and registering your automobile(s); notifying the state of your previous legal residence/domicile of the change in your state of legal residence/domicile; and preparing a new last will and testament which indicates your new state of legal residence/domicile. Finally, you must comply with the applicable tax laws of the state which is your new legal residence/domiSee IPAC page A7

Operation ID To protect personnel residing in the barracks from potential theft of personal property, electronics and other valuable items, the Provost Marshal’s Office is initiating an aggressive crime prevention program called “Operation ID” to help service members in marking and documenting their valuables in order to deter crime and aid in the recovery of stolen property. As part of Operation ID, Cherry Point Police will be available to mark personal items by engraving, and to document items of value. MCAS Cherry Point tenant commands wishing to schedule mass engraving for the Marines and Sailors in their unit should contact the PMO Operations Division at the number below. Once scheduled, Cherry Point Police personnel will come to the unit barracks and engrave and inventory personal belongings. Service members will be provided with the completed inventory sheet for their records. Commands and individuals interested in Operation ID should contact Lt. Walter Davila at 466-6830/2632 or walter. davila@usmc.mil to schedule an engraving visit.

Martin Luther King Jr. remembrance Over this long weekend honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., it is fitting we remember his immortal words, “The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy.” By their actions, Marines and Sailors worldwide are honoring Dr. King’s legacy today, whether on the field of battle, or training to go in harm’s way. We owe them each our collective gratitude and respect. The national theme of this year’s Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day is “Remember! Celebrate! Act! A day on, not a day off!”

During the extended break, it is imperative for Marines and Sailors to embrace the Marine Corps’ highest standards of character while off-duty. Exercise your responsibility to take care of your fellow Marine. Be prepared to intervene when you see someone acting irresponsibly. Use common sense and apply the principles of operational risk management when making travel plans to ensure you and your families enjoy the holiday. Losing someone to an off-duty accident is a senseless waste. Make the right calls and return with honor.

Cherry Point is home to more than five varieties of Marine Corps aircraft used to train and maintain readiness to support combatant commanders and possible operations across the globe. To ensure aircraft and Marines who conduct those missions are safe, 2nd Low Altitude Air Defense Battalion provides surface-to-air weapon defense capabilities to Marine Air Ground Task Force commanders while deployed. Cpl. Raymond J. Hummel, a low altitude air defense gunner with Battery B, 2nd LAAD Bn., leads and trains his Marines to become a more combat ready asset within the unit. “As a team leader I’m expected to be able to identify the aircraft, determine if it is hostile and guide one of my gunners with the engagement,” said Hummel. Decision making at this level is important because it allows the gunners to save the lives of fellow Marines, according to Hummel. Along with leading his Marines, Hummel’s favorite aspect of his job is field training. 2nd LAAD goes to the field every month, to provide Marines with techniques and strategies needed in a combat environment, according to Hummel. Some weapons used by 2nd LAAD to provide defense, security and stability include M240B and Browning M2.50 caliber machine guns, M203 rifle mounted grenade launchers and Stinger missiles. Hummel takes pride in his duties as a leader and as a Marine.

Marines with Marine Transport Squadron 1 took to the air and sea with their HH-46E Sea Knight helicopter to practice search and rescue swimming techniques off the coast of North Carolina Jan 9. The Marines rehearse potential missions every day at the squadron to prepare for possible scenarios, said Cpl. Anthony DiCola, a search and rescue crew chief instructor with VMR-1. “We try to practice having the swimmers in the water at least once a week to keep them, the pilots and I prepared for anything,” said DiCola. “Practicing over the water makes it more difficult for the pilots because all they have to rely on for adjustments are my calls.” When flying over the land, pilots use objects on the ground to adjust and keep steady. However, over the water, VMR-1 pilots fly blind, unable to see the swimmers in the water, and relying on directions from their crew chief, said DiCola. “As a crew chief it’s important to always keep your situational awareness,” said DiCola. “You have to be very assertive and confident in the calls you make, and verify everything to keep everyone on the same page and running smoothly.” During training, VMR-1 Marines practice a variety of situations the crew may face. Maneuvering over land and sea, the VMR-1 crews work together to practice aerial insertion of rescue swimmers from varying heights while static and in motion. “The 10 and 10’s are fun,” said Cpl. Kyle Alessandro, a SAR swimmer instructor for VMR-1, referring to an aerial insertion technique used by rescue swimmers. “They are supposed to be used for a situation where you need to get a group of swimmers out quickly in an area close to each other.” The 15-and-0 is a technique that places a swimmer from a static aircraft into water from a height of approximately 15 feet to a point near an objective, like a person or equipment, that needs retrieval. Rescue swimmer instructors keep watch over rescue swimmers during training, according to Alessandro. “We practice these types of missions to become more proficient at the job,” said Alessandro. “Many of these missions are very physically demanding, and it takes training to keep us as qualified as possible.”

Cowboys saddle up, sally to Texas LANCE CPL. ANTONIO RUBIO MARINE CORPS AIR STATION IWAKUNI

IWAKUNI, Japan - After nine months in the Asia-Pacific region, Marine Fighter Attack Squadron 112, also known as the “Cowboys,” departed Marine Corps Air Station, Iwakuni, Japan, Jan. 9, 2014. The Cowboys increased squadron combat readiness during various training exercises throughout their stay at Iwakuni as part of the Unit Deployment Program. “Our reservists received training that would have taken them years and years to get compared to what they got in nine months, so it’s been absolutely outstanding,” said Sgt. Maj. Scott A. Miller, sergeant major of VMFA-112. Miller said that with the unique tasks that occurred during the deployment, active duty Marines increased their learning curve via operational tempo, launching jets and taking care of mechanical issues. The squadron activated on April 1, 2013, and has improved professionally and personally throughout the deployment, according to Miller. “Our Marines have matured in a lot of different ways, and they’re going to be better Marines and better citizens when they return home,” said Miller. “That’s an additional benefit that a deployment gives Marines, whether officer or enlisted.” According to Lt. Col. Michael P. Jeffries, commanding officer of VMFA-112, the Cowboys first mobilized for the Global War on Terrorism in June 2009, and since then have made it an objective to train vigorously when possible. “I’ve had all my Marines full-time for nine months, so that’s a huge training opportunity rather than just drill and status,” said Jeffries. “For us, as a reserve unit, I get my Ma-

MARINE CORPS BASE CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. - Jeff LeBlanc wanted to give back to the community with a passion he developed during his 26 years in the Marine Corps, so he began building several bike trails for the Camp Lejeune community. LeBlanc retired in 2002 as a master gunnery sergeant and just a year prior discovered a passion for mountain biking. LeBlanc has since become the president of Down-East Cyclists, a local bicycle club, and has opened a 6.5 mile trail at Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune. “I’ve been riding since 2001,” said LeBlanc. “It serves as a form of meditation for me. The wilderness around me makes it a challenge to navigate through, but at the same time, it’s calming for me. Once I started, I was hooked.” LeBlanc has participated in all of the Marine Corps Community Services’ Grand Prix series triathlons and races for five years in a row. “I also raced for the Marine Corps mountain bike team,” said LeBlanc. “It gave me a different experience than road biking gave me. It was an adrenaline rush.” LeBlanc laid the groundwork for the Henderson Recreational Area Trail in 2010, when the old bike trail closed due to base construction. Cherry Point fire chief retires after 29 years MIKE BARTON MCAS CHERRY POINT

Ken Lavoie is the kind of guy you would want around if your house was on fire. With nearly 30 years of experience in firefighting and the last seven as Cherry Point’s fire chief, Lavoie is what some would call a “fireman’s fireman.” Sitting in his small, cinderblock office in Fire Station 1 only days before his retirement, Lavoie admitted he wasn’t sure what lay ahead – this is what he has done his whole adult life and the future is a new challenge yet to be tackled. If you looked around his relatively featureless office, you wouldn’t find any clues either. And you wouldn’t have seen the many symbols of a life of firefighting that you might have expected. No wall-mounted fire axes with fancy inscriptions, no group photos of firefighters posing in front of a large red ladder truck. No white dog with black spots. In fact, the only noticeable wall decorations were some small framed photos of the air station’s headquarters building as it burned in late 2007. In many ways, when you looked at Lavoie’s office, you were looking at Lavoie, himself. Stable as the block walls that make up his office space, he tends to come with few trappings other than a quiet sureness that stems from years of doing a job he wanted to do since his youth in Manchester, New Hampshire. Lavoie began his firefighting career in early 1989 right here on the Cherry Point flight line. Back in those days, the Marine aircraft rescue firefighting team was more simply known as Crash Crew. Although he cross trained with the air station fire department, his primary mission of responding to aircraft mishaps may have been just as important for his future career. Over the course of his 25 years as part of the Cherry Point Fire Department, he would find himself responding to aircraft mishaps just as frequently as he would have in his old crash crew, thanks to mutual support agreements between the two firefighting organizations. Similar agreements for emergency response extend to multiple fire departments in the surrounding counties. When Lavoie traded his Marine uniform for the one worn by the Cherry Point Fire Department, he continued down a path that would not only take him to the top spot in the department, but would give him the opportunity to make lasting improvements in fire safety for everyone who lives and works on Cherry Point. It’s a big job, as fire departments like the one here handle a broader range of incidents than they did “back in the day.” The Cherry Point department’s duties include firefighting, emergency medical services, hazardous materials response and technical rescue services. As chief of a department that responds to an average of 2,200 emergency calls a year, Lavoie would contribute significantly to the design of the air station’s newest fire station. “I was lucky, not many fire chiefs get to do that,” he said, recognizing the advantages presented by the opportunity. He was also responsible for creating a state-of-the-art 911 dispatch center to replace an older, less effective center. Anyone who has tried to get the required support to upgrade expensive systems understands the kind of work it takes to make a project of this scope

happen. “It takes getting people to believe in it, and getting the necessary support behind it,” admits Lavoie. One of his biggest achievements was steering his department toward national accreditation. “The department’s accreditation with the Commission on Fire Accreditation International validates everything we do,” said Lavoie. “Our procedures are measured against Marine Corps and national standards. It doesn’t stop with accreditation; it is an ongoing process that’s re-evaluated every five years.” At the time of its accreditation, Cherry Point was only the sixth Marine Corps fire department to earn this status, and one of only 28 accredited fire departments in the Department of Defense. These accomplishments and others, such as improving training procedures and increasing the number of firefighters and paramedics on the air station over the years, will have lasting effects on the safety of everyone here. About that headquarters building fire in 2007. The structure, which was built during World War II, was a perfect example of how not to design a large building against the possibility of fire. It was a disaster waiting to happen. Fortunately, it occurred during a weekend when there were only a few people in the building; unfortunately, the flames were fanned by increasing winds from an approaching tropical storm. No one was seriously injured; in fact, the only reported injuries were minor ones received by firefighters who battled the monstrous blaze. According to Lavoie, nearly every fire department in Craven and Carteret counties responded. In the end, said Lavoie, it was a lesson on the importance of installing effective fire suppression systems in buildings, as well as using appropriate building design to help compartmentalize and contain potential blazes. As for Lavoie’s photos of the blaze, he simply said, “We like to be reminded – it can happen.” Fortunately for Cherry Point, there are people here, like Ken Lavoie, who heed those kinds of reminders every day, while looking out for those of us who might forget. While the photos served as a reminder to Lavoie, his bare office walls were

simply a reminder to any other observer that his legacy will not be measured by decorations on a wall. Chief Ken Lavoie hung up his helmet after his final shift on New Year’s Day, retiring after 25 years in the air station’s fire department. He was awarded the Department of the Navy Meritorious Civilian Service Award during a retirement ceremony on Jan. 9.

Infantry Marines with 31st MEU drop in for fast-rope training

PHOTOS BY: LANCE CPL. NATALIE ROSTRAN

Marines practice their fast-roping techniques Jan. 8 at Camp Hansen Okinawa, Japan. The Marines fast-roped from a CH53E Super Stallion helicopter hovering at 30 feet. More than 100 infantrymen completed two iterations, one with minimal equipment and the second with full packs and weapons. The Marines are with 2nd Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment, currently assigned to the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit, III Marine Expeditionary Force. The helicopter and crew are with Marine Heavy Helicopter Squadron 463, currently assigned to Marine Medium Tiltrotor Squadron 265 (Reinforced), 31st MEU, III MEF, both part of the Unit Deployment Program.

Marines run toward an awaiting CH-53E Super Stallion helicopter Jan. 8 at Camp Hansen. The Marines took part in fast-rope training, where more than 100 Marines familiarized themselves with the essential technique.

CAMP HANSEN, Okinawa - Hearts racing, but with steady hands, the Marines grasped the rope that dangled from the helicopter hovering 30 feet in the air. Relying on their training, they took the plunge. More than 100 Marines with 2nd Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment, executed helicopter rope suspension training with the support of CH-53E Super Stallion helicopters with Marine Heavy Helicopter Squadron 463 Jan. 8 at Camp Hansen. The helicopters and crew with HMH463, are currently assigned to Marine Medium Tiltrotor Squadron 265 (Reinforced), 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit, III Marine Expeditionary Force, as part of the Unit Deployment Program. The infantrymen of 2nd Bn., 5th Marines, are currently assigned to the 31st MEU, under the UDP. Helicopter rope suspension training is essential for infantry Marines, equipping them with the skills needed for tacti-

cal aerial insertion into areas without the aircraft touching down, according to Sgt. Gregory J. Dominguez, a machine gun section leader with the battalion. “We’re practicing fast-roping for insertion capabilities by (simulating) a raid objective, coming around the target, and fastroping in by surprise,” said Dominguez. “It gives us a quick insertion on the ground. That way we can jump in, complete the task, and move into another position.” For some of the Marines involved, the training marked the first use of the essential technique, according to 1st Lt. Thomas G. Scovel, an infantry officer with the battalion. “It’s important for our Marines to gain familiarity with the aviation combat element while they’re with the MEU,” said Scovel. “For some of them, it’s their first time fast-roping while on Okinawa.” This vital training is indispensable for infantry Marines to maintain mission readiness, according to Dominguez. “It’s important for the Marines to be comfortable with their gear coming down (the rope),” said Dominguez. “In a hostile environment, they can’t be scared of coming down from the helicopter. They have to be focused.” Supporting the Marines’ training also assisted the helicopter pilots with keeping their own skills sharp, according to Maj. Neil E. Oswald, a pilot with the squadron. “Doing fast-roping requires us to keep a precision hover,” said Oswald. “Precision hovers are used for the rapid insertions, rappelling, and fast-roping. We also use them for externals, where we hover over a load, either a Humvee or an artillery piece, and maintain a very precise hover as the (Marines on the ground) attach our hooks to the cargo.” After gaining familiarity with the rope by executing the maneuver while wearing minimal equipment, the Marines then rappelled with a full pack and weapon. The Marines need to be as comfortable as possible with the techniques because a crisis or contingency can arise at a moment’s notice in the Asia-Pacific region, according to Dominguez. “It’s not hard, as long as you practice,” said Dominguez. “When you practice and you’re comfortable with all the equipment, your job, everything really becomes second nature.”

nery Sgt. Jeremy Walsworth, aircraft rescue fire fighting crash chief with MWSS-271. “It’s also preparing the Marines by making them feel comfortable enough to carry this out in the case of a real functional fire.” “Being able to put the proximity suit on was a new and exciting experience for me,” said Cpl. Zachary A. Roberts, a bulk fuel specialist with MWSS-271. Cross training between Marines is very beneficial, according to Roberts. Learning secondary roles and responsibilities within the squadron helps all Marines prepare for emergencies, Roberts said. “This was the coolest thing I have ever done, I had an extreme adrenaline rush,” said Roberts. During the exercise, the engineer company practiced building and repairing roads, operating air conditioning systems, generators and water systems. The Marines routed more than a mile of hose to push water from a nearby lake to the working camp for purification during the training, said Lance Cpl. Kenny Cochran, a water purification specialist with MWSS-271. “My job is really important because you can’t live without water,” said Cochran. “On deployment having clean water is crucial not only because water is essential, but because being able to count on the fact that clean water will always be available keeps the morale of the Marines up on a daily basis.” The squadron’s headquarters company set up and maintained telephone systems, radio networks and cable and wire systems to ensure communications on the base functioned properly. The training built on a solid foundation within the squadron, benefiting Marines in all sections and of all ranks, according to Holt.

plan. A one year Bible reading plan is nice because it packages a small enough passage of scripture for you to read every day in less than 15 minutes. It works perfectly for people with busy schedules. I would hasten to say to them that if they’re going to commit to a year-long Bible reading plan, they consider the following tips: 1) Make sure you have a Bible you can clearly understand. In my experience the modern translations, such as the New King James Version, the New International Version, or even the New Living Translation (just to name a few) are easier to digest than the old King James Version that many of our parents and grandparents grew up reading. But it really amounts to preference in the end. 2) Use a chronological Bible reading plan. This can be downloaded from the internet. The sequence of the Bible books as listed in the front of your Bible is not in chronological order. But a chronological reading plan will order your daily passages in the chronological sequence the events happened in history which is usually how historical books are written. 3) Get yourself an accountability partner or two. You will find that having them in your corner to nudge you along the way encourages follow through and, ultimately, completion. 4) Make this time a routine. As far as possible, your devotional time should occur at the same time and place every day. 5) Set periodic check points. Make the first of every month the time where you catch up from missed days in the previous month. The thing you want to avoid most is falling too far behind. 6) Journal your discoveries. Immediately after each reading session, you may find it helpful to write out what that passage is saying to you today. This not only becomes a good reference for you in the future, but it also increases your retention of what you’re reading. I will tell you up front that this last tip could add on another 15 minutes to an hour, but it may prove well worth it if deepening your relationship with God is your target.

ing the games. Each athlete selected up to three volunteer teammates. Unselected volunteers created a large cheering squad. “We had 30 athletes pre-sign up,” said Phyllis Black, the store director of the commissary. “Four of the athletes even represented Team USA in the 2012 London games.” “Some of the favorite games over the years have been the pie eating competition, junk in the trunk, and turkey bowling,” said Black. “The turkey bowling seems to be the overall favorite.” The event would not have been possible if not for the extraordinary group of volunteers participating, said Black. “I just came out to have fun, meet new people and spend time with the athletes,” said Cpl. Tyler Small, an aviation ordnance systems technician with Headquarters and Headquarters Squadron. During the games, Small partnered with Olympian Kari Lynn Myers Myers has competed in the last three Cherry Point Special Olympics. “It was a great experience,” said Small.”I was honored to be one of the ones chosen to help compete, and I only hope that it gets even bigger next year.”

IPAC from page A2 cile. The five actions listed above show Marine’s intent to make a new state his or her permanent home. In order for the IPAC to change a Marines “State of Legal Residence,” the Marine must submit a completed DD Form 2058 along with proof that one of the above actions has been taken by the Marine. Ask IPAC Cherry Point was established to give Marines at Cherry Point the ability to ask personnel administration related questions. This initiative is for information purposes only. Personnel requiring personal administrative action should see their unit S-1 for guidance. The e-mail address for Ask IPAC Cherry Point is CHPT_IPAC_ OMB@usmc.mil

LEADERSHIP from page A1 room instruction included classes on basic military customs and courtesies, ethical leadership, moral character, and the tradition of honor, courage and commitment common to all Marines. The Marines learned to lead by example, be mindful of their thoughts and actions and how to set and reach goals in a moral and ethical way. During the training, Eldridge emphasized the need for junior Marines to prepare for future leadership roles. Junior Marines must know their jobs and learn the duties of their peers and senior Marines, according to Eldridge. “Pro-activity is always better than reactivity,” said Eldridge. “What you expect from a leader is expected of you as a leader.” Eldridge explained and expounded on leadership traits and principles, focusing the discussion on ways to enhance the performance of the squadron as a whole and how individual performance and unit cohesion tie together to create a great leader. Initiative promotes dependability from leaders, he said. Following the class Eldridge led a guided discussion with the Marines regarding issues Marines may face during their career. While some information being taught was a reiteration of what the Marines already knew, other information was new to them and taught them valuable skills and lessons. “These classes were really beneficial because they taught us as junior Marines to start being leaders and refreshed all the knowledge we already had” said Lance Cpl. Stefan Heitz, a meteorology and oceanography analyst forecaster with H&HS. The program gives junior Marines an opportunity to not only learn from their senior leaders but to also meet and learn from peers. “Getting other Marines point of view on subjects helped me better understand what we were being taught and it opened my eyes to ideas I may not have thought of otherwise,” said Heitz. Eldridge said these classes will continue throughout the year. He encouraged Marines to engage their senior leaders with topic ideas for future classes.

Marines, Sailors and civilians braved the cold Atlantic Ocean water at Onslow Beach Saturday for the 7th annual Polar Plunge. The event, hosted by the Special Olympics of Onslow County, raised awareness for individuals with disabilities. Participants, wearing costumes or team shirts, competed to see which individuals and teams could brave the frigid water longest. “This is a great event,” said Dora Gaskin, the event coordinator for the event. “The community and participants are always really good sports and are beyond helpful every year no matter how cold.” Every year the event gets bigger, this time garnering roughly 500 participants taking the plunge, said Gaskin. “The amount of support we see each year is overwhelming,” she said. “I have a son who participates in the Special Olympics so I always love to see those that come out.” The Polar Plunge event hits close to home for some. Nohelia Guillot, a martial arts instructor in Jacksonville, came out to raise awareness for her own son who has autism as well as support her best friend’s son with Down syndrome. “The water was freezing and felt like knives going into my skin but I did it for my son and my friend,” said Guillot. “When I was in the water with all those other people it made me feel good that so many people care and came out for a good cause.” If the only way to raise awareness was by jumping into cold water, that is exactly what Staff Sgt. Travis McRae and his team set out to do. “As soon as you jumped into the water you could feel your feet go numb but you just went with it because it was for a good cause,” said the formal schools chief for 2nd Marine Expeditionary Force, who was part of team “Mandatory Fun.” “We wanted to build our camaraderie and help in any way we could.” After the event, participants received refreshments, warming up and mingling with fellow participants. “You could see by the amount of people that came out that everyone had a blast,” said Gaskin. Cherry Point service members get Back in the Saddle LANCE CPL. VICTOR A. ARRIAGA MCAS CHERRY POINT

As the holidays end, Cherry Point Marines, Sailors and civilians might find it difficult to get back into a work mindset. As part of a Corps-wide initiative, all station service members and civilian employees attended Back in the Saddle training Jan. 6-10. B.I.T.S. training helps service members and civilian employees refresh their knowledge of safety standards and Marine Corps and local policies. During the training, Marines and civilian employees review workplace safety and potential hazards; Marine Corps and station policies regarding hazing, equal opportunity and inclement weather; and best practices to avoid possible injuries while on and off duty, said Michael P. Granger, a safety and occupational health specialist with Marine and Family programs. “During the holidays, when the operational tempo tends to slow down and personnel take leave to enjoy time with their families and friends, they may lose focus on their role in the accomplishment of the mission, said Granger. “The purpose of the Back in the Saddle training is to refocus and reengage operations in a safe manner and for all personnel to be ready to execute the complex and demanding mission at the start of the New Year. B.I.T.S. training helps service members and civilian employees refocus on their duties after what is traditionally a period of low operational tempo during the holidays, said Granger. “Stopping to refocus and reengage operations affords leadership and management the opportunity to review how they do business, he said. “By reviewing all these procedures we ensure they

are sound and in place to not only accomplish the mission, but to safeguard our Marines, Sailors and civilian employees. The Voluntary Protection Program, a new incentive program for civilian employees sponsored by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, recognizes employers who set the standard in safety excellence, said Granger. “This new program was signed by Col. Pappas and makes it very clear about his commitment to creating and providing a safe work environment for the employees of Cherry Point, he said. Reviewing job hazards and SOP’s can help build strong unit cohesion and morale, according to Lance Cpl. Adrian Mendoza, a training clerk with Marine Wing Headquarters Squadron 2. “This type of training is necessary for us to review and create a safer working environment as well as getting back to the mission, said Mendoza. “When we create a safer work environment, we remove some of the stress the job may present. In addition to creating a safer work environment, the training help service members focus on reviewing recent mishaps causing restricted duty or lost-time injuries. “I feel it’s important to review past mishaps so we can learn from our mistakes, said Mendoza. “When something bad happens we take the proper steps to make sure it doesn’t happen again. B.I.T.S. training is important for unit cohesion and overall safety and efficiency, according to Granger. “With this training, we definitely get back to the tasks at hand, he said.
