Twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year, Cherry Point’s radar room and control tower never shut down. The air traffic controllers who oversee Cherry Point’s airspace and runway operations issue clearances and feed information to pilots and aircrew on the ground and in the air. Their mission, to prevent collision of aircraft and ensure smooth flow of traffic, is vital to Cherry Point’s mission and national security. Cherry Point’s ATC controls over 5,000 square miles of airspace. Attention to detail, mission focus and teamwork are all imperative to the safety of Cherry Point service members and civilians in surrounding communities. “Every day is a different scenario, nothing is ever exactly the same. There are so many things the runway can be used for so every day is something different,” said Lance Cpl. Michael Van, an ATC specialist. “Even though I am a supervisor, I am still constantly learning new things and new ways to operate.” Marines in the tower and radar room fill several, unique roles. Each crew member has a job to do, whether it is granting access, watching the radar from the ground, directing aircraft and vehicles on the runway or feeding information to pilots. All jobs are essential to daily mission accomplishment. The controllers aim to keep the air and ground space safe and accident free. Ensuring safe operations can be exhausting so teamwork and proficiency are key, according to Van. “Maintaining safety is everyone’s responsibility,” said Van. “We take breaks and switch on and off like pilot and co-pilot so we don’t get burned out.” ATC Marines cross-train constantly to learn and sharpen their proficiency in each function of the ATC. The Marines conduct simulations and exercises to test their understanding and proficiency in their assigned roles and to identify ways to improve. See RADAR page A2

The Naval Education and Training Command recognized a Cherry Point Marine for excellence in the Naval Aviation training program recently during the NETC Sailor and Instructor of the Year Competition. Sgt. Martin Sanchez, Jr., a deceptive electronic countermeasure course supervisor, earned the 2013 Junior Instructor of the Year Dec. 12 for his work at Cherry Point’s Center for Naval Aviation Technical Training. As an instructor since 2010, Sanchez has led some 28 individual classes consisting of nearly 100 aviation training Marines at CNATT, totaling over 6,300 instruction hours. Sanchez is also slated for the Marine Enlisted Commissioning Education Program in 2014. The Instructor of the Year Program recognizes Marines and Sailors from across NETC who excel in their assigned roles both on and off duty. Sanchez earned the distinction for his professional acumen and character, helping to shape the future of aviation Marines. Each Marine and Sailor selected this year led with pride across NETC, according to Rear Adm. Don Quinn, the commander of NETC. “The Sailor of the Year and Instructor of the Year honors are earned through hard work and dedication to perfecting their craft; they are preparing the next generation of Sailors and Marines,” said Quinn in a statement to NETC Public Affairs. “They have earned this distinction through the leadership they demonstrate even when no one is looking, and the mentoring of others, both junior and senior alike.” For Sanchez, the distinction as an Instructor of the Year stands as a testament to Marine Corps’ aviation technical training. His efforts will strengthen future generations of Marine aviation, said Sanchez, who will report for Officer Candidates School this month. “I chose to become an instructor because I wanted a chance to give back to the Navy and Marine Corps communities that gave me the skills needed for success,” said Sanchez. “As an instructor, I am fortunate to be in a position where I can significantly influence the quality of training provided to future avionics technicians of the Navy and Marine Corps. This is something that I take seriously because the diversity and potential impact each Sailor and Marine brings to the fight.”

President Obama makes Christmas Day phone calls COURTESY STORY III MARINE EXPEDITIONARY FORCE

Senior Chief Petty Officer Vilma T. Rodriguez received a phone call Christmas Day from President Barack Obama, while celebrating the holiday with friends at Camp Shields, Okinawa, Japan. “In my 18 - almost 19 - years in the Navy, I’ve never experienced anything like this,” said Rodriguez, an independent duty corpsman with Combat Logistics Regiment 37, 3rd Marine Logistics Group, III Marine Expeditionary Force. “To receive a call from the president, it’s a big deal,” she added. “I felt honored that he took time to show his concern for the well-being of my family.” The president wished Rodriguez a Merry Christmas, and thanked her for her hard work during Operation Damayan, the military relief effort in the Republic of the Philippines following Typhoon Haiyan. The Marines assembled with Rodriguez also had an opportunity to wish the president a Merry Christmas. Calling service members on Christmas has become a tradition for the commander in chief, and this year Rodriguez was selected for her performance during Operation Damayan. Rodriguez responded to the crisis providing essential medical care for the U.S. military response team, but was also affected personally by the storm. Rodriguez, a native of Tacloban, one of the hardest hit areas, lost her brother and cousin to the typhoon. Dealing with her own personal crisis, Rodriguez prioritized the needs of others over her own, dedicating herself to the relief effort. Rodriguez impressed Master Chief Petty Officer Eric S. Schrader, command master chief of 3rd MLG, both took note of her selfless attitude despite her personal loss. “She always had a smile on her face; she was very resourceful,” said Schrader. “She had her priorities all in order - to the mission first.” “She’s a very humble person, she always puts others before herself,” he added. “She’s got a heart of gold.”

Whether for the first time or after several deployments, leaving home and family always comes with heightened levels of stress and responsibility for the Marine leaving and the family left at home. Deployments can be exciting and scary all at the same time. Each rotation brings challenges and hardships for service members and their family, according to Amy Zier, the readiness and deployment support trainer with Marine Corps Family Team Building. “Every deployment is differ-

ent,” said Zier “There may be unique challenges or different situations that you may not have faced before or could not have foreseen.” MCFTB and Cherry Point’s Marine Corps Community Services work together to ensure that Marines, Sailors and their families prepare for all aspects of the Marine Corps and the challenges of the Marine Corps life, including deployments, said Zier. Zier said two common challenges facing families before deployment are communication and expectations. “Challenges include differing expectations about the frequency

or availability of communication, understanding the emotional cycle of deployment, and spouses, significant others and family members fear of isolation while their Marine is away,” said Zier. “There is also a fear of not being able to handle all of the household and family responsibility on their own.” MCFTB offers several Life Skills classes to help Marines and Sailors and their families prepare for deployment. The classes help families improve their communication skills, and helps spouses maintain a connection with their See DEPLOYMENT page A2

MCFTB offers more than ten classes for families. “Bridging the Gap: Communication for Deployments” teaches couples ways to communicate and maintain intimacy while apart. “Five Love Languages” teaches couples how to express their feelings. The auto skills class provides spouses with basic auto care and maintenance tips to help lessen their anxiety and increase their understanding of auto care, said Zier. The “Ready for Anything” workshop helps Marines and spouses prepare for deployment. The workshop covers the logistical, financial and emotional aspects of deployment before the deployment begins. “This class really helped me learn to deal with finances, keeping the house in order and learning to be independent,” said Nina M. Peterson, Marine wife of Sgt. Mark A. Peterson II, an aircraft rescue and firefighting specialist with Marine Wing Support Squadron 274. Peterson said loneliness and a lack of communication can strain a relationship during separation, but the class taught ways to remain connected and be as prepared as possible for the challenge of deployments. “Marines and their families have told us here at MCFTB that our classes have made a huge difference in their family readiness, their understanding of the Marine Corps lifestyle, and family communication dynamics,” said Zier. “So I encourage Marines to take advantage of these wonderful benefits and services for themselves and their family.”

Standing ovation for LeHew LANCE CPL. SAMUEL ELLIS MARINE CORPS BASE QUANTICO

QUANTICO, Va. - The scene of taillights stretching as far as the tired eye could see glowed devilish red, as if taunting drivers’ tempers, as the pace of the homebound traffic leaving Marine Corps Base Quantico slowed to a crawl. That scene is the typical afternoon at the Crossroads. “On my way home tonight, I see a Marine running in utilities, flak jacket, pack and carrying a rifle while heading toward TBS....it is the sergeant major,” wrote the driver in an Interactive Customer Evaluation comment. “I figured Q-Town to The Basic School and back is about four plus miles round trip, and he is running it just about the time everyone else is headed home for the day.” The source continued his comments by highlighting the almost instant connection Sgt. Maj. Justin LeHew, sergeant major of Training and Education Command, made with those in his command. “The sergeant major gave a rousing speech his first week here to all TECOM personnel in which morale problems were once again being addressed,” wrote the driver. “After the sergeant major was done speaking, the entire theater applauded in

unison. All they could talk about was who this new sergeant major was. They loved him instantly.” The northwest Ohio native has served more than 25 years in the Marine Corps serving in various job fields from Assault Amphibious crewman and mechanic to drill instructor. He has served in various points of the globe including South America, Iraq and Bosnia-Herzegovina. Col. Nathan I. Nastase, assistant chief of staff, G5 Marine Corps Forces Pacific, who worked with LeHew from 2011-2013, explained why he thinks Lehew’s leadership style is so effective. “Sergeant Major LeHew epitomizes engaged leadership, and it’s inspirational because it is always from the heart, always focused on encouraging Marines to grow and always for the right reasons,” said Nastase in response to the written question. “Despite being demanding, he is revered because he takes pride in maintaining the high standards of our Corps, and Marines respond positively because they know he genuinely cares about them and our institution.” LeHew, having served as an assault amphibian crewman, assault amphibian mechanic and drill instructor, has a simple

definition for his leadership style. “It’s firm but fair with a balance between authoritative and persuasive,” said LeHew. “Earning the right to be called a United States Marine does not stop after boot camp or Officer Candidates School. It must be earned every day, throughout your entire career regardless of rank, billet or time in service.”

LANCE CPL. JOSHUA BROWN 26TH MARINE EXPEDITIONARY UNIT

MARINE CORPS BASE CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. – Chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear defense specialists specialize in reacting to catastrophic scenarios and provide critical support in a wide array of disasters. Their responsibilities are numerous and provide for the better defense of our military, allies and nation. CBRN promotes mission success in the Marine Corps in high level emergency situations involving attacks with weapons of mass effect and impact. Cpl. Jacob Hansen, a CBRN specialist with the 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit tackles these responsibilities as well as the responsibilities of leading his fellow Marines every day. Although CBRN was not his first choice, Hansen was determined to become a Marine and the next best thing to being in the infantry was to become a CBRN specialist, a career path that would still allow him to deploy for the service he loves. His exposure to the Marine Corps occurred when he was young. Hansen first decided he wanted to be a Marine after seeing a commercial on television featuring the United States Marine Corps Silent Drill Platoon. “I liked the uniform, I liked the way the Marine Corps looked and I knew that’s what I wanted to do,” said Hansen. To increase his understanding of the military and better prepare himself for his desired career, Hansen participated in the Marine Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps program throughout his time at North Forsyth High School in Forsyth, Ga. “I enlisted through the Delayed Entry Program when I was 17 and left for boot camp after my senior year,” said Hansen. With the wealth of knowledge provided in MJROTC, Hansen said he was better prepared for boot camp and leadership opportunities. Hansen’s first and current unit is the 26th MEU. He spent more than two years with the unit and deployed with the MEU during its eight-month deployment to the 5th and 6th Fleet areas of responsibility. “We did a lot of training leading up to the deployment, qualifying in more defense and readiness than most CBRN units get to,” said Hansen. “We received qualification with more advanced gear, prepared ourselves for humanitarian effort, practiced hazmat ops (hazardous material operations) and hazmat tech (hazardous material technologies).” The 26th MEU CBRN platoon was trained for a variety of situations and scenarios to fit the needs of the deployment. The platoon provided the MEU support should the need arise for crisis response capabilities.

LeHew shared his estimation of success on a day-to-day basis in this way. “If you put forth 100 percent in your daily duties in educating, training, mentoring and taking care of your people, then you can go home at the close of business each day with a general sense of accomplishment in everything that you do,” said LeHew.”

“We actually called ourselves the CBRN ACM SAR (chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear assessment and consequence management search and rescue) Platoon,” said Hansen. “We became a close-knit team during deployment and were successful.” Hansen’s effectiveness and contributions during deployment were recognized when he was promoted to the rank of corporal while on ship. Sgt. Marty Acosta, a Marine Air-Ground Task Force planner with the 26th MEU, one of Hansen’s mentors, said “He developed professionally and improved his leadership on deployment.” Acosta is familiar with Hansen having known him before, during and after the deployment with the MEU. He has come to know Hansen on both a professional and personal level. “He’s a good leader because he’s honest, dependable and admirable,” said Acosta. “He’s also good for a laugh every once in a while.” Acosta said Hansen is a good leader and works hard, but he also knows how to keep a positive attitude and motivate his fellow Marines with humor. “He’s very real and straight-forward,” said Acosta. “He doesn’t put on any masks or hide who he is.” If Hansen continues to develop his leadership style, continue to be himself and keep his charisma, Acosta believes he will be successful inside and outside the Marine Corps. “Without Hansen’s knowledge and skills the unit would be far less prepared for crises involving CBRN attacks,” said Acosta. Acosta said he hopes Hansen will continue to listen to those Marines senior to him, develop his skills and wishes him the best in any situations he will encounter in his career. In addition to his Marine career, Hansen is currently in the process of making adjustments to his personal life. He is currently engaged and scheduled to marry on Jan. 3, 2014. Hansen said “We’ve been friends since sixth grade, started dating after I graduated boot camp and I asked her to marry me during leave after deployment.” Hansen has other aspirations that include the desire to become a career firefighter. His qualifications in CBRN mirror many of the qualifications for firefighters and provide a set of skills transferable to the civilian working force. “I was in firefighting before and they basically told me to come back any time,” said Hansen. “I really enjoyed it and the skills I’ve learned in CBRN can be used for it.” Hansen’s current plan is to continue his time in the Marine Corps as a recently promoted corporal, he desires to pass on his skills to junior Marines and prepare them for success.

ANDERSEN AIR BASE, Guam - Exercise Forager Fury II concluded Dec. 20, with service members on Tinian and Guam beginning a return trip to their home units across the Pacific. During Forager Fury II, Marine Aircraft Group 12 employed a variety of assets to assess its combat power generation and ability to operate in an austere environment. With the exercise complete, MAG-12’s leaders reflected on the execution and outcome of the exercise. “As with any exercise of this scope, plans for everything from air and ground transportation, to billeting, to aviation support, to coordination with various local and federal agencies, must be accomplished well in advance of the exercise in order to ensure its smooth execution, said Maj. Donald Hall, Forager Fury II exercise officer with MAG-12. “For us, that meant that planning for this year’s Forager Fury began almost immediately after completing this exercise last year. MAG-12 conducted three in-depth planning conferences with the participating units, as well as weekly internal operational planning teams in order to ensure the safe and successful execution of Forager Fury II. Detailed planning began this summer and will continue all the way through the safe redeployment of all forces to their home bases. This coming January we will conduct our after action reviews and begin planning for next year’s exercise. During the exercise, the aviation units flew more than 500 training sorties while logging approximately 700 flight hours while conducting more than 100 simulated close air-support missions engaging more than 160 targets. “Forager Fury II is an excellent opportunity for MAG12 to showcase its combat capabilities while integrating elements that are internal to MAG-12, as well as other components of the Marine Air Ground Task Force, from

the ground combat element to the logistical support and other aviation elements throughout the Marine Aircraft Wing overseas, said Maj. Thomas Mondoux, executive officer of Marine Wing Support Squadron 171. “One of the best parts about the exercise for us, as MWSS-171, is to show how closely integrated we are to MAG-12 and its aviation combat capabilities. MAG-12 and MWSS-171 capabilities have expanded exponentially during this year’s Forager Fury II, with planning and pre-exercise preparations beginning over one year ago, according to Lt. Col. Howard Eyth, commanding officer of MWSS-171. “During Exercise Geiger Fury in 2012, MAG-12 and MWSS-171 came in and cleared all of Baker runway in order to land a KC-130J Hercules, the first aircraft to land on the runway since 1947, said Eyth. “During Forager Fury II, we established a forward arming and refueling points in two locations on the island of Tinian, one at west field and one at north field, where aircraft could come in and rapidly refuel, turn around and launch right back into the fight. MWSS-271 engineers cleared more than 160 acres of vegetation to help create four separate runways and connecting road networks during the month-long exercise. The engineer platoon also cleared land adjacent to the flight line to create landing zones for Marine Corps MV-22B Osprey tilt-rotor aircraft and Navy MH-60S Seahawk helicopters, according to Eyth. During Forager Fury II, the MAG-12 units achieved many goals, providing more than 11,000 meals to the service members on Tinian and delivering 900,000 gallons of fuel to troops throughout Guam and Tinian. “We get a lot of training opportunities here in the Marianas that we can’t as easily obtain in mainland Japan, said Mondoux. “It’s an excellent opportunity for us, as MWSS-171, to showcase the full capabilities of our equipment and capabilities that are resident in a support squadron. Finally, it gives us an opportunity to operate

in an austere environment to fully test the limitations of our Marines and equipment when we operate under a continuous surge. This helps us identify where our frictions points are and forces us to maximize performance of our personnel and equipment. While the purpose of Forager Fury II is training and readiness, the service members also committed to building relationships with locals. During Forager Fury II, 14 community relations projects were conducted on Tinian and Guam, providing more than 70 hours of much needed manpower at each of the locations, at a monetary value of more than $30,000. “We’ve had the unique opportunity to work with the local officials, said Mondoux. “They have been very supportive of our mission and are very encouraged to see more Marines in the future and expanding our training opportunities. The Marines have had an excellent opportunity to interact with the public by getting out and doing community relation events, working with kids and touring monument sites with the locals. We have even been able to invite the locals to check out some of the things that were doing here and demonstrate some of the capabilities of the Marine Corps. With the conclusion of Forager Fury II, the MAG-12 leadership understands that exercises like these are very important to preparations for possible, future real-world operations in the region. “Professionally and personally, the best part of this exercise was seeing several months of hard work come together into a successful training evolution for all of the participating units, Lt. Col. Keith Topel, the operations officer for MAG- 12. “MAG-12 and the other participating units executed well, learned a great deal, and will be ready to incorporate those lessons-learned into future iterations of this exercise or actual combat operations.

New system to help alert base community of emergencies LANCE CPL. JOSHUA GRANT MARINE CORPS BASE CAMP LEJEUNE

MARINE CORPS BASE CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. Though tragedies like the Fort Hood and Washington Naval Yard shootings are reminders that violence can sometimes occur at a government facility, a new system at Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune will assist in keeping all base residents safe and informed. All Marine Corps installations will soon introduce AtHoc, a mass notification system, to provide better security and

safety for base residents. “AtHoc was rolled into the installation emergency management program as a result of the Fort Hood shooting,” said Paul Stenger, director of plans for the Marine Corps Installations East Operations Division. “There is a Department of Defense requirement to notify the base population within 10 minutes of any threat.” Once fully employed at Camp Lejeune, the system will notify all service members and Defense Department civilians of possible threats. The system will notify

Sensory

personnel of emergency events via phone call, text message or email, according to Tabatha Hart, web emergency operations center administrator for Marine Corps Installations East. AtHoc notifies users of emergencies such as active shooters, terrorist attacks or natural disasters. The Giant Voice system will reach dependents and all other civilians working on base as another part of the emergency management program. “The Giant Voice system, the large

public announcement speaker system, is designed to help notify the individuals not alerted by AtHoc,” said Stenger. “The speaker system is already in place in high population areas across the base, including school areas and housing, to ensure everyone is made aware of any incident or disaster.” The Giant Voice will notify people of an emergency and will also inform them of the best course of action, whether to seek shelter or avoid a particular area of base, Stenger said.

‘Rocket Man’ Ryan Newman one of the best at describing how it feels to drive at high speeds

NASCAR family trees keep growing Kyle Petty is a grandfather, and Richard Petty has another great-grandson. Austin and Sarah Petty named their son Adam after Austin’s brother, the late Adam Petty, who died in a crash at New Hampshire Motor Speedway in 2000. Add David Ragan to the list of Sprint Cup drivers who are moving into parenthood. Ragan his wife of one year, Jacquelyn, are due to have a child next summer.

Billy Scott named crew chief at MWR

NASCAR

On the morning — or afternoon — before every major NASCAR race, the top drivers participate in meet-and-greet sessions with fans at hospitality villages set up on speedway property. Most of those fans who get to attend do so as guests of a driver’s sponsor, and the crowds are relatively small compared to a driver’s fan base. The driver typically offers opening remarks, then fields questions from the audience before signing some autographs and moving on to the next appearance. In many cases, the answers given in the lowkey environment of the hospitality sessions better explain what it’s like to drive a race car than the answers given in sessions with the media or in televised interviews. Ryan Newman, driver of the No. 31 Chevrolet at Richard Childress Racing, is considered one of the circuit’s best at explaining his profession. Since he’s known as the “Rocket Man” for his performances on pole day, which include 51 career poles in the Sprint Cup Series, 12 in the Nationwide Series and one in the Camping World Truck Series, he’s often asked what it feels like to drive really fast. His initial answer usually brings smiles to the Ryan Newman meets NASCAR fans before a Sprint Cup race. faces of those in his audience. “From 140 miles an hour on up, it all feels the going the same speed, there’s really no difference. It’s when same,” he said. “When you take off in an airplane, you’re usually leaving the ground at about 120 miles somebody checks up and you have to get on the binders [brakes] because you weren’t paying attention, that’s when an hour. there’s a difference.” “You can feel the speed up to 120, but from that point on, Newman said the sensation of speed depends a lot on the you can feel it accelerate a little bit, but you don’t realize circumstances, such as the type of car he’s driving or the you’re going 600 miles per hour, or 500 miles per hour or length and shape of the track he’s on. 350. “If you’re at Michigan, where it’s a little more wide open, “You don’t have the acceleration to feel the speed, and it’s one thing,” he said. “And if you have a tire that kind that’s the same feeling in a race car.” of locks you in to the race track, that’s one thing. But like Newman explains that in a race car, the faster one goes, at Atlanta, when you’re going almost 200 miles per hour, the better the car reacts to the speed. you’re almost in a controlled slide. That’s good because “When you leave pit road and get halfway up to speed, the rest of it is just a matter of the faster you go, the better you’re controlled, but you’re still sliding. “It’s part of what we do in taking race cars to the edge, but the car sticks, because you have more downforce,” he said, ultimately it’s whoever is sliding the least that’s leading.” quickly adding that there comes a point when the downAnd he said that the speeds he feels in a Sprint Cup car force isn’t enough to keep the car sticking to the track. sometimes seem mild compared to those he attained in “The tires want to slide, so there’s a happy medium in smaller, open-wheeled cars earlier in his career. there that we all try to hit as drivers,” he said. “Running a Midget at 140 miles per hour average at Pikes Then there’s the issue of something happening at extreme Peak [International Raceway] with open wheels and a little speed, which is where the danger factor kicks in. “When you’re going 200 [miles per hour] and you hit some- four-cylinder car, I think that kind of gets you prepped for a thing or a tire blows or whatever, it’s going to be compound- lot of things,” he said. “Silver Crown cars would run 185 at the end of the straightaway at Gateway [Motorsports Park], ed by the next hit and the hit after that and who comes which was clipping right along for that type of car. up and hits you at 200 while you’re sitting still,” he said. “So 200 in a full-fendered [Sprint Cup] car with a lot of “Going 200 miles an hour doesn’t mean anything as long as downforce isn’t such a big deal. Townley moves to Wauters Motorsports for 2014 Camping World Truck Series driver John Wes Townley has moved from Red Horse Racing to Wauters Motorsports, where he will drive the No. 5 Toyota. Team owner Richie Wauters said Townley showed improvement in late 2012 and in the 2013 season, and he expects more of the same. “He has made significant gains in his NASCAR career, and we feel this is the right fit for him this season,” said Wauters, who as a crew chief found great success while teamed with Kyle Busch. “We expect to have John Wes in the top-5 in points and, hopefully, bring home some wins.” The Truck Series opens its season at Daytona International Speedway on Feb. 21.

NUMERICALLY SPEAKING

Rules changes make current, popular drivers eligible for NASCAR Hall of Fame again by the selection committee. And the late Raymond Parks, who won the first Cup car owner’s title and played a key role in the formation of NASCAR, would have little chance of garnering more votes than someone like Elliott, Labonte or Martin. The number of nominees each year is being reduced from 25 to 20, which also has the potential to leave out pioneers not as well New rules make Mark Martin known to today’s voting panel. Other changes include the for- and other active Sprint Cup drivers eligible for the mation of a Landmark Award for Outstanding Contributions to NASCAR Hall of Fame. NASCAR, which will go to either a competitor or those who work with tracks, teams, sponsors, media or as an ambassador for the sport. And the current Sprint Cup champion will be added to the voting panel each year. Jerry Markland/Getty Images for NASCAR

The recently announced changes to the rules for induction into the NASCAR Hall of Fame likely will result in more modern-era drivers being inducted and could see some of the sport’s pioneers shuffled aside. Under the new rules, drivers who have competed for a minimum of 10 years and have reached their 55th birthday on or before Dec. 31 of the year prior to the nominating year are immediately eligible for induction. And any competitor who has raced for 30 or more years is eligible, regardless of age, and continuing to race after reaching the Hall threshold won’t prevent them from being nominated or inducted. That change means that Mark Martin, Bill Elliott and Terry Labonte, who have been running partial Cup schedules, are now eligible to be inducted, whereas before the new rules, they’d have to be retired for three years to be considered. But putting popular drivers like Elliott, Martin and Labonte on the ballot now could mean that a driver, such as the late Joe Weatherly, who had 25 Cup wins and was the two-time and defending Series champion when he died in a racing crash at Riverside, Calif., in 1964, could be overlooked

James Finch and Bobby Labonte back in Sprint Cup for 2014 James Finch, who sold his Phoenix Racing team last year, and Bobby Labonte, who lost his ride with JTG Daugherty Racing, are back in the Sprint Cup business, beginning with the Daytona 500. Phoenix Racing’s new owner, Harry Scott Jr., announced last week that Labonte will drive a second car for the team in the 500 on Feb. 23, 2014, Bobby Labonte and that Finch will be a part of the effort. “James continues to be a valuable part of our team, and when he came up with the idea of running Bobby in a second car, I jumped at the opportunity to bring him back into the fold,” Scott said in a team release. “Bobby is a veteran driver that can also provide valuable insight and leadership for Phoenix Racing.” Finch said he was glad to be returning to a race where his cars typically contend for the win despite his team’s underdog status. “I’m thrilled to be headed back to Daytona with Bobby Labonte,” Finch said. “I thank Harry Scott for this opportunity. He knew I would have to be weaned off racing. I can’t quit cold turkey.” Labonte, who ran 14 races for Phoenix in 2010 and one last year, is expected to run several more for Phoenix next season. Details about the car number, crew chief and sponsors for Labonte’s car have not been announced. Chris Graythen/Getty Images for NASCAR

NASCAR has sent Sprint Cup teams the specifications for 2014 race cars. They include changes to the bodies of the cars — changes designed to bring about more competitive racing on the intermediate, 1.5-mile race tracks. The new rules include a square leading edge on the splitter, side skirt and rear fascia adjustments, an 8-inch rear spoiler, and a 43-inch-by-13-inch radiator pan, according to a release from NASCAR. Also, there will be no more pre- and post-race checks of the heights of the fronts of the cars. Donnie Wingo, crew chief of the No. 21 Wood Brothers Ford, said the new package, which was developed through two tests at Charlotte Motor Speedway, should make the cars more stable and therefore more comfortable for drivers. Billy Scott has been named crew chief of the No. 55 Toyota at Michael Waltrip Racing. Scott, who will work with driver Brian Vickers, began his NASCAR career as a mechanic in the Truck Series and returned to college to get an engineering degree. He’s been the lead engineer for the No. 55 team for the past two seasons. “I’m honored, but I also know this is a big responsibility,” Scott said in a team release. “Brian has been incredible to work with and is a winner, so we can’t wait to get 2014 started.” Vickers is set to return to the seat of the No. 55 Toyota after being sidelined for the final five races of 2013 because of blood clots.
