Approximately 150 members of Marine Wing Support Squadron 271 conducted Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear gas chamber training at Marine Corps Auxiliary Landing Field Bogue Nov. 26. The Marines received classes on CBRN threats and proper usage of their equipment prior to putting their knowledge to the test in a training exercise. The training is performed to bolster Marines’ trust and confidence in their equipment.

“This training ensures Marines are prepared and keeps them knowledgeable about their gear,” said Sgt. Tyler Johnson, the CBRN defense chief for MWSS-271. “The (CBRN) instructors are here to help Marines understand what their gear is used for, why the training is conducted and how it is beneficial to them and the Marine Corps.” The Marines took part in the annual training, known as Individual Protection Equipment Confidence Exercise, outdoors as opposed to the more See CHAMBER page A7

The Marines of Marine Transport Squadron 1 earned the 2012 Chief of Naval Operations Safety Award, in addition to Search and Rescue Excellence awards including the 2012 Aviation Rescue Swimmer of the Year and the 2012 Aviation Rescue Crew of the Year. The office of the CNO annually awards Marines, Sailors and naval installations for outstanding performance of duties while excelling as part of the Naval Aviation Safety Program. The Roadrunners’ mission is to provide search and rescue support to Cherry Point flight crews and short to medium range rapid response for distressed residents in the local community. The Marines in the squadron train constantly for their assigned mission. The VMR-1 Marines are grateful and excited for earning recognition as top performers across the naval services. “An award of this magnitude shows me that the Marines in the squadron are executing the mission above and beyond what is required of them,” said Lt. Col. Brian D. Bernth, the commanding officer of VMR-1. The squadron currently has more than 230,000 safe flight hours and aims to increase that number with each flight, according to Bernth. MWSS-271 Marines, Sailors train on EOD range PFC. GRACE WALADKEWICS MCAS CHERRY POINT

More than 30 Marines and Sailors with Marine Wing Support Squadron 271 completed a demolition shoot at the Explosive Ordnance Disposal range here as part of their annual Mission Essential Task List training Tuesday. The Marines and Sailors of MWSS-271 learned urban breaching using model doors, obstacle removal, ditching and tree-cutting techniques. “As with any training, demolitions are a perishable skill,” said 2nd Lt. Aaron A. Hayden, combat engineer platoon commander with MWSS-271. “So in order to make sure our Marines are prepared for war, it’s best to train to a high standard to ensure the Marines know what to do and not just run through the motions.” The squadron detonated more than 20 explosive devices, incorporating several breaching methods. Using C-4 explosives and items commonly found in an urban warfare environment such as cardboard and glass bottles, the Marines built on their improvisational breaching skills. “This annual training ensures the standard is set high and that we will be more prepared and ready whenever needed,” said Hayden. Practicing in teams of six to eight, the Marines worked to approach obstacles, set charges and provide security before detonation. Each team protects against shrapnel from the charges with a blast blanket. “Learning not just the annual training, but the urban training as well is very important,” said Sgt. Jacob B. Primrose, tool room non-commissioned officer with MWSS-271. “The annual training is a basic refresher on expedient demolitions, but the urban training is where the Marines learn to breach houses and break down doors which can help save lives in a real-life situation.” The Marines use this and similar training to expand demolitions knowledge across MWSS-271. Demolition training gives Marines an idea of what to expect if called to support combat operations. “Being proficient in breaching is required as a combat engineer,” said Primrose. “Not only is this training combat essential and helps with mission readiness, but I believe everyone should get a chance to do something different like coming to the range and blowing stuff up.”

End of world as we know it LT. CMDR. CHARLES W. JOHNSON MARINE AIRCRAFT GROUP 14 CHAPLAIN

I am willing to bet that very few of us remember all the excitement and chatter going on about this time last year. You don’t? Well, it went something like this: “Only X many days until the end of the world,” according to the Mayan calendar. Most Americans, generally speaking, could not care less about the calendars of ancient civilizations. But in this case, there was just a little bit of mass hysteria. Supposedly, the world was going to end Dec. 21, 2012. It all had to do with an ancient Mayan calendar, or at least what’s left of it, since the engraved stone tablet that lies at the root of all the excitement is damaged right where the key “development” of Dec. 21, 2012, is written in Mayan hieroglyphs – or so we’re told. I know, it’s not exactly straightforward. I never really bought into any of this. Not that this tablet doesn’t exist; I’m sure it does. And not because the Mayans weren’t good at making calendars. Apparently they were above average. The European calendar, after all, was revised in the late 1500’s because it was fifteen days behind the actual date – but I digress (much like that calendar). Getting back to the Mayans, though, I am not so sure they were all that great at seeing into the future. Here is why. All their magnificent cities lie in ruins – they were ruins, in fact, long before the Spanish arrived in the early 1500s. Moreover, the reason why they are all ruins is that the Mayans failed to realize how much maintenance large stone buildings need and how much of a drain that can be on a labor force desperately needed in the fields. In other words, the whole civilization became top-heavy and food became scarce, as always happens in these cases. Result: everybody moved away, and the vast cities fell into ruins. Now, if they’d had a little more foresight, just a little more prudence, they could’ve seen this civic disaster coming a mile off. It’s not like it happened over night, after all. So, whatever the missing hieroglyphs of the Mayan inscription foretold would happen in the year 2012, I’m not convinced they’re worth finding, pro-

vided they weren’t smashed into gravel ages ago. I wouldn’t want to give the impression, however, that I think the Mayans were alone in their short-sightedness or their unreliability as predictors of TEOTWAWKI (The End of the World As We Know It). Unless I’m mistaken, Halley’s Comet passed close enough to the earth in 1910 that there were wide-spread reports in the United States and elsewhere that it would be “The End.” Ironically, earth did pass through the tail, the end, of the comet; otherwise, everything was fine. The only thing that ended was people’s interest in Halley’s Comet. There have been other predictions of the Apocalypse at one time or another, but nothing ever came of them. Again, the fact that you’re reading this in the first place shows that they were all wrong. I will not, however, end this article on a negative note. So I will concede that this time of year, in fact this exact month, does make me think of the end of the world as we know it. I mean, December, taken by itself as is – at “face value,” so to speak – is usually a pretty dreary, cold, and inhospitable month. For us, for anyone, in fact, with eyes to look around, it is nevertheless a strangely cheerful month, what with all the twinkling, multi-colored lights everywhere (even strung up on trees and, more remarkably, on government buildings). There are joyful greetings of one kind or another, and people give each other gifts (sometimes to people they would otherwise never dream of giving anything to). There is decidedly something about the month of December – especially the last week of it – that puts an end to the coldness, gloom, and yes, even the sadness of this old world. Indeed, it seems to strike at this sadness at its strongest point, when light is growing scarcer and all nature seems to be dying, it moves the heart with a kind of hope and happiness that is hard to describe. But even if I can’t describe that beautiful reality – and I can’t – I can and do wish that it might be yours, whoever you might be and no matter what the future may hold in store. May God bless you all, each and every one!

Sgt. Phillip J. McCleveland works as a jet engine mechanic for Marine Aviation Logistics Squadron 14. Working on the J-52 jet engine, which powers the EA-6B Prowler, McCleveland finds his duties both challenging and rewarding. After eight years, McCleveland feels that his skill set is still expanding. “I think the J-52 engine is the hardest engine to work on military-wide,” said McCleveland. “I’ve been doing this for more than eight years and I still learn new things about it every day.” According to McCleveland, the most challenging aspect of his job is also his favorite. “I love troubleshooting the challenges that arise and figuring out what’s wrong with engines when they need to be repaired,” said McCleveland. “There are a lot of different challenges but it makes us wellrounded. It’s like playing with one big Lego.” Making mission, leading Marines and repairing engines is all part of what McCleveland does to support the mission of MALS-14 and 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing. “Making sure everything goes well is part of what we do every day,” said McCleveland. “Even when we have a lot of new challenges that show up we still do it because that’s our job and we have to support the squadrons and make our mission.”

NEW YORK – Members of the 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing, 2nd Marine Division, and Marine Corps Base Quantico bands participated in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade Nov. 28 in New York. Thirty Marines from Cherry Point and Camp Lejeune augmented the 50-member Quantico band in the parade. “We knew choosing a Marine Corps band would not only deliver an exciting musical moment but would create an opportunity to salute and give thanks for all the brave American men and women of our armed forces this Thanksgiving,” said Wesley Whatley, creative director for the parade. The band performed musical pieces “Semper Fidelis,” the official march of the Corps, and the “Marines Hymn” along the 2.5 mile parade route in Manhattan and at the final stop performed “Strike Up the Band.” “It’s a tremendous honor to be invited into the homes of American families while they get together to celebrate Thanksgiving,” said Master Gunnery Sgt. Jeffery Fangman, the bandmaster for Quantico’s band. “It’s one of the greatest opportunities we have to tell the Marine Corps story to the nation and internationally — through music, drill, snap and pop and through everything we represent as Marines.”

QUANTICO, Va. – The president of the United States dismounting from a forestgreen helicopter while returning the salute of a dress blue-clad Marine standing at attention on the White House lawn is a familiar sight. Marine Helicopter Squadron 1, the unit

responsible for the president’s rotary-wing transport, celebrated 66 years of service Sunday. Starting as an aviation experiment, HMX-1, also called the Nighthawks, holds the record as the first Marine Corps helicopter squadron, calling Marine Corps Base Quantico, Va., home since day one. The squadron developed a new aviation

concept called “vertical envelopment” beginning in 1948. During the Korean War, HMX-1 provided surveillance and medical evacuation support for ground troops. The squadron proved their presidential worthiness in 1957 after expediting a trip for President Eisenhower. Within 20 years of those early presiden-

tial flights, HMX-1 became the exclusive provider of presidential rotary wing flights at home and across the world. The squadron introduced the Marine Corps’ tiltrotor MV-22 Osprey into its fleet in May to compliment their older “White Top” VH3D Sea King and VH-60N White Hawks and the “Green Top” CH-46E Sea Knight.

Community honors veterans during holidays with Wreaths Across America LANCE CPL. JACKELINE PEREZ RIVERA MARINE CORPS BASE CAMP LEJEUNE

JACKSONVILLE, N.C. – Members of the Jacksonville community will join thousands nationwide to honor veterans through a wreath laying ceremony on Wreath Across America Day Dec. 14. Wreath Across America Day is an annual event beginning in 1992 at Arlington National Cemetery. Since then, the event has spread across the country, now marked annually by congressional proclamation. Volunteers and veteran’s families will lay donated wreaths at Coastal Carolina State Veterans Cemetery to honor the veterans. “We want to remember the veterans; a

lot of the veterans buried there have no family or their families live far away,” said Pat Walker, secretary of the Onslow Vietnam Veterans Memorial Foundation, who organized the local Wreaths Across America event. “We want to let people know they are not forgotten.” Wreaths for the program come from donations by local families and businesses for use by the Onslow Vietnam Veterans Memorial Foundation. “It’s more than placing a wreath on a gravestone,” said Amber Caron, a Wreaths Across America spokesperson. “It’s a way for veterans to know that even when the words on a grave are worn down, somebody will take a moment to pause and re-

flect.” Onslow Vietnam Veterans Memorial Foundation first participated in Wreaths Across America three years ago. Members placed wreaths at the base of each glass pane of the Onslow Vietnam Veteran’s Memorial and at the Coastal Carolina State Veteran’s Cemetery. Since then, the foundation has worked to place a wreath at every one of the 3,500 veterans’ graves in the cemetery. Through generous offerings, the organization laid 500 wreaths last year and hopes to surpass that mark this year. Marines from several units aboard Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune sponsor sections of the cemetery, and the Young

Marines and Boy Scouts also participate. It’s a civic opportunity for youth, said Walker. “It’s near and dear to me to keep this going for the kids,” said Walker. “I want the youth to know our veterans and service members are very important people.” Many of the volunteers also assist families in carrying the large, ornate wreaths. “It’s a learning experience for them,” Walker added. To make a donation or to volunteer, call Pat Walker at (910) 545-9333 or visit www.wreathsacrossamerica.org.

Pilots and crewmembers from Marine Heavy Helicopter Squadron 366 conducted tactical aerial insertion drills for emergency scenarios northwest of Marine Corps Outlying Field Atlantic Tuesday. Marine Light Attack Helicopter Squadron 467 provided close-air support with an AH-1W Super Cobra helicopter during the simulated mission. “The overall purpose of training was providing the aircrew training with inserting troops in a hot [landing zone] as well as the escort’s ability to provide their role as close

hauling,” said Sgt. Cory Emily, a crew chief with HMH366. “If the passengers are more senior Marines that have conducted this type of exercise before, they generally are in and out very quick.” The training helped crewmembers refresh their abilities to assist pilots during takeoff and landing as well as communication between aircraft. “This type of training gets us integrated with working with other air assets,” said Emily. “Today it was the [Super Cobras], coordinating efficiently with them to conduct the mission.”

First public display of Osprey in mainland Japan

LANCE CPL. BENJAMIN PRYER

Attendees of the annual air show at Japan Air Self-Defense Force’s Nyutabaru Air Base look at a display showcasing an MV-22B Osprey with Marine Medium Tiltrotor Squadron 265 Sunday. The Osprey’s presence in the air show marks the first time an Osprey has been on static display in mainland Japan.

LANCE CPL. BENJAMIN PRYER MARINE CORPS AIR STATION IWAKUNI

IWAKUNI, Japan - Marines with Marine Medium Tiltrotor Squadron 265 participated in a distinguished visitor and media relations visit aboard Japan Air Self-Defense Force’s Nyutabaru Air Base Saturday. The squadron, based at Marine Corps Air Station Futenma, Okinawa, flew an MV-22B Osprey to the media event hoping to dispel misconceptions about the aircraft. “I expected a much larger aircraft that would be noisier, but it is very quiet so far and it was much smaller than I expected,” said Koichi Ozawa, mayor of Takanabe. “I

feel that this is what’s going to be the future, going from regular helicopters to the tiltrotor, and I learned today that the Osprey is safer than regular helicopters and also more capable.” Ozawa spoke about the new information he gained, mentioning how it changed his view on the Osprey. “This type of opportunity should happen more often and be available in the future in Japan. What we saw about the Osprey today is different than what has been reported in the press and spoken in the community,” said Ozawa. “What I learned is that this is a safe aircraft. I hope this type of opportunity will be available to the public more.”

During the event, three pilots from VMM-265 answered questions from media representatives and distinguished visitors, while sharing information about the capabilities of their aircraft. “We’re all proud of the MV-22 and we want it to be successful. So everybody puts their best foot forward and works really hard to make sure everything goes smoothly and looks good,” said Capt. Travis Keeney, a naval aviator with VMM-265. Keeney said that he understands the concerns of the Japanese public regarding the Osprey. “This is a new aircraft, a new idea, there’s nothing like it in history,” said Keeney. “Anything that’s new and unknown

garners criticism, but that’s just because it’s unknown. I think the more people see it, eventually it’ll become a commonplace aircraft that nobody worries about.” Keeney, an Osprey pilot for more than six years, felt honored to represent his commanding officer and his squadron during the event. “I think this is a great opportunity to quell the rumors and the common misconceptions because the local media is able to get the word out to the public,” said Keeney. Following the visit, the crew participated in the Nyutabaru Air Show Sunday, the first time an Osprey was on static display during a Japanese air show.

common enclosed chamber training. The training tests Marines’ ability to use their protective masks and suits in an environment with airborne pollutants, such as chlorobenzylidene malononitrile, or CS. “The outdoor chamber is more efficient for large groups of Marines,” said Johnson. “It is also a great way to train the Marines in a more realistic setting so they can see what would happen and how the CS gas would spread through the air in the case of an attack.” During training, CBRN instructors disperse CS canisters to simulate a gas attack. CS, more commonly called tear gas, fills the air and Marines test their ability to don protective equipment to guard against airborne agents in a matter of seconds. “Outdoor chambers simulate the wilderness and a real life environment,” said Cpl. Shannon Lee Whitt, a motor transport operator with MWSS-271. In addition to the chamber training, Marines learned how to decontaminate an affected area, and how to properly isolate and treat exposed Marines and their gear. “Not only did I receive training, get used to wearing my gas mask and learn how to decontaminate a Marine, but my sinuses feel much clearer now as well, so I would say this training went well,” Whitt added.

has also received more than 20 CNO awards in recent years. “If each member of the squadron continues to perform in an exemplary manner and put the mission first, we will remain safe,” said Bernth. “These Marines aren’t doing it for themselves; they are doing it for everyone around them.” VMR-1 pilots and crew fly the HH-46E Sea Knight, known as Pedro, to conduct local search and rescue. The five-member crew, consisting of two pilots, a crew chief, a rescue swimmer and a medical technician, train constantly to maintain operational efficiency and safety. Each crewmember is vital to the mission of VMR-1 and all share credit for their success, according to Maj. Paul Stout, a pilot with VMR-1 and member of the 2013 SAR Aircrew of the Year. “Every Marine and Sailor at VMR-1 that flies in Pedro, maintains the aircraft, schedules the training, or provides administrative, logistical or technical support for the aircrew and aircraft knows that we could be involved in a lifesaving mission at any time of day or night,” said Stout. Stout shares his success with his crew and with all members of VMR-1, he said. “It’s an honor, but we got the award for just doing our job and responding to a call that the squadron could receive at any time. It very well could have been any other pilot or aircrew assigned to VMR-1,” said Stout. “It’s rewarding to know that what you do on a daily basis can make a difference in the lives of our fellow military members, their families and to the local community,” said Stout.

Marines rescue downed pilots, continue Operation Damayan 1ST LT. LUKE KUPER III MARINE EXPEDITIONARY FORCE / MARINE CORPS INSTALLATIONS PACIFIC

MANILA, Republic of the Philippines – Marines with Marine Aerial Refueler Transport Squadron 152 assisted in rescuing two pilots involved in a civilian helicopter crash over Manila Bay Nov. 24, after delivering relief supplies in support of Operation Damayan, the U.S. military’s response to Super Typhoon Haiyan. Maj. Jason Kauffman, a KC-130J Super Hercules pilot with the squadron, heard a mayday call on his radio approximately 18 nautical miles northwest of North Harbor. “We were inbound to approach into Manila … we heard a mayday call from a he-

licopter that just crashed into Manila Bay,” said Kauffman. “We set up in orbit; we got eyes on the survivors. There were two of them in the water.” The crew immediately prepared to deploy a life raft. “The four crew members in the back got the raft ready to go and cleared all the loose equipment away from the door,” said Sgt. Chris Weins a crewmember with the squadron. “On the aircraft commander’s call, we threw the raft out, and it deployed as it was supposed to about 300 feet away from the (survivors).” The Marines’ quick response ensured the downed pilots did not remain in open

water long. “A local fisherman responded 20-30 minutes later,” said Kauffman. “They came up alongside the raft we kicked out and loaded the two helicopter pilots into the fishing boat.” Representatives with the U.S. Agency for International Development supporting relief efforts were passengers in the KC130J, returning from Tacloban. “(Operation Damayan) has been a textbook example, it’s a model, of what we can do,” said Jeremy Konyndyk, a USAID representative and passenger aboard the Super Hercules. “It’s always nice to learn from what’s gone right.”

Also aboard the aircraft were congressmen Trent Franks of Ariz., Chris Smith of N.J. and Al Green of Texas, in the Philippines to observe the relief and recovery efforts of the U.S. military. “In an absolutely amazing example of military precision, (the crew) dropped a life raft to where the people could swim to it,” said Franks. “It seems like (Kauffman’s) call sign ‘Rescue’ was emphasized again. I believe that the military (members) of the U.S. are the most noble figures in human society.” The cause of the helicopter crash is under investigation.

Hungry Marines and Sailors lined up in the Roadhouse in anticipation of a homemade Thanksgiving dinner with all the trimmings Nov. 28. The line grew longer and longer as the smell of a Thanksgiving meal overcame the area reminding many of their own homes. Enjoying a home cooked meal, service members who couldn’t be home spent the holiday together watching football and playing games. “For those who are away from home, this is a great opportunity to be with folks you work with every day,” said Maj. Gen. Robert F. Hedelund, 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing commanding general. “If you can’t be with your family, then be with your fellow Marines and Sailors in a place like this where everyone is pitching in together to have a great time and meal.” The troops came together to enjoy homemade food served by the commanding general, Cherry Point commanding officer Col. Chris Pappas III and members of the Marine Corps League. “I think it’s awesome that we all came together to have a good time and get to know each other during the holidays,” said Lance Cpl. Gabriel Edwards, an automotive organizational mechanic with Combat Logistics Company 21. “I also really liked that veterans from the Marine Corps League and our commanding general and commanding officer took time to come out and serve us.” The service members feasted on turkey, ham, mashed potatoes and gravy, and stuffing. Additionally, the Single Marine Program delivered to-go meals to Marines and Sailors on duty, sick in quarters or on restriction. “We have Marines out on deployments and in harm’s way that can’t be home. So when you get an opportunity like this to come together as a family you take it,” said Pappas. “While you are here, you get to build that camaraderie and enjoy fantastic food.” Hedelund encouraged the Marines and Sailors to spend the holiday together “This is what being a Marine is all about,” said Hedelund. “Taking time out during a holiday to spend it with your fellow Marines and being able to come together and let everyone know they are appreciated for their hard work is what it’s all about.”

Holiday Safety Marines combat holiday alcohol use LANCE CPL. UNIQUE B. ROBERTS MCAS CHERRY POINT

As an institution, Marines protect each other from operational dangers. In a similar manner, Marines must help their fellow Marines to understand the dangers of alcohol abuse and misuse, especially during the holidays. The holidays often involve increased alcohol use which can lead to alcohol-related problems. In an effort to combat these problems, the Marine Corps offers prevention and educational programs to keep Marines informed and aware of potential consequences of alcohol abuse. Alcohol related incidents around the holiday season may include driving under the influence, underage drinking and binge drinking according to Ashley Brothers, an alcohol prevention specialists with Cherry Point’s Substance Abuse Counseling Center. Brothers’ records indicate that the Corps largest demographic, Marines under 25 years old with the rank of sergeant or below, most commonly experience problems with alcohol. Commonly reported reasons for abusing alcohol among all ranks include boredom, work or home stressors or the common misconception that heavy drinking is part of being a Marine. Marines must be encouraged to be their brothers’ and sisters’ keepers, watch for the signs of alcohol abuse or misuse and enforce set standards for alcohol use. Brothers said some signs of alcohol dependence include difficulty setting or sticking to drinking limits, dramatically increased alcohol tolerance, planning lifestyle or leisure activities around drinking

or feeling physically uncomfortable when you stop drinking. Marines experiencing any of these symptoms are encouraged to address their concerns through Marine Corps Community Services and Substance Abuse Control Officer to get the help they need before an alcohol related incident occurs or command intervention becomes necessary. Some of the preventative strategies Brothers suggests are knowing and setting limits, making a solid plan before drinking starts, including food with drinking activities or finding alternatives to drinking. Positive alternatives include getting involved with the Single Marine Program, volunteering or taking part in other community activities. Another program available to Marines is the Arrive Alive card provided by individual units. The card covers taxi fare to the service member’s barracks or residence and is paid back by the Marine at a later date. Marines who don’t take advantage of available opportunities could face stiff punishment ranging from non-judicial punishment to courts martial. A Marine who receives NJP for Article 111, drunken or reckless operation of a vehicle, aircraft or vessel, faces reduction in rank, forfeiture of pay and restricted driving privileges on and off base. Punishments may also include confinement on diminished rations, restrictions to certain specified limits and extra duties. Marine leaders at all levels should continue to encourage their fellow Marines and maintain awareness of alcohol abuse and misuse during this holiday season.

DoD Civil Service employees receive a 25% discount from the standard classified fee schedule. To submit a free classified ad you must go to the Joint Public Affairs Office in Bldg. 1 (Headquarters Bldg.) to fill out and submit a free ad request form. There is a 20-word limit on free classified ads and a two-ad (two separate categories) per household maximum per week. Deadline for submitting free classified ads is 4 p.m. Monday. When Monday is a Federal holiday, ads must be submitted by noon, Friday To re-run, free ads must be resubmitted

Policy for free classified ads

Providing free advertising for business ventures is prohibited by government printing regulations and conflicts with the civilian publisher’s advertising (which pays for printing and distributing The Windsock.) Therefore, as stated on the free ad request form, free classified ads “... must not be of a commercial or business nature.” Examples of commercial or business ads include baby-sitting, property for rent by owner, and yard work. Such advertisements may only be run as paid ads. Likewise, ads promoting fund raising, activities sponsored by any organization, or events for which a fee is charged, are also not authorized under the free ad provision. The Windsock will only publish free ads for animals which the owner is giving away. Real estate for sale must be exclusively “By Owner.” Failure of an ad to appear in The Windsock usually indicates the submission did not meet the criteria for free publication.
