Hancock Marina open to Cherry Point patrons

Transport squadron supports recon jump

After nearly an eight month closure, the renovations at the Hancock Marina are now complete and the marina is again open for Cherry Point’s community to use. Boaters and fishermen may use the facility, which reopened earlier this month, for wet and dry storage of vessels. Marine Corps Community Services and Cherry Point base facilities began much needed repairs and renovations in February, according to Matt Houde, the recreation supervisor for the marina. “The docks were in fair condition when I started working here, but over the years they had really started to wear out,” said Houde. MCCS, along with base facilities and contractors, began working on the project about a year ago. “When we got word from the base that the docks were being completely renovated—let’s just say it was a wonderful day,” said Houde. Renovations included complete removal and replacement of all seawall structures, the building of a new crabbing and fishing pier, paved parking areas for patrons, and a new area with picnic tables. “The marina is brand new, very safe and looks like a marina should,” said Houde. Since the reopening of the facility, the boating community has taken full advantage of the renovations, according to Houde. “We have really just reopened, but the slips will be 80 to 90 percent full in the next month,” said Houde. “We have several returning patrons who left when the renovations started

Members of Marine Aerial Refueler Transport Squadron 252 performed static-line jumps with 2nd Reconnaissance Battalion at Marine Corps Auxiliary Landing Field Bogue Monday and Tuesday. Approximately 30 Marines jumped from low altitudes both night and day out of a KC-130J Hercules flown by VMGR-252 Marines. Static-line jumps are conducted with the use of a fixed cord attached to the inside of the aircraft used to open parachutes automatically for jumpers.

The purpose of the training was to improve the combat readiness of pilots, crew members and jumpers. “Combat readiness is essential to mission success and this training helps ensure that the Marines are ready for anything,” said 1st Lt. Jenner M. Yuhas, a KC-130J pilot with VMGR-252. The training helped the transport squadron sharpen their skills as well as practice planning and coordination with the 2nd Recon Bn. mission, according to Yuhas. See JUMP page A7

Cherry Point Marines and Sailors explored the limitations of their vehicles Saturday and Sunday during an autocross event on the flight line here. Cherry Point’s Single Marine Program and Marine Corps Community Services collaborated with the Sports Car Club of America to bring the quarterly autocross event back to the air station. During the event, the SCCA’s main objective was to teach Marines and Sailors how to avoid hazards on the road. The SCCA also provided training for attendees who used their personal vehicles on the course. Participants who drove their personally owned vehicles on the course learned how it might react when faced with obstacles or adverse conditions, said Jen Krivohlavy, the SMP coordinator.

Krivohlavy has attended autocross safety events several times, crediting the training for her own safety after a narrow escape last year. “It has saved my life. Just after leaving the autocross in March of last year, I got into an accident with a truck that had dropped a steel plate, which ended up totaling my car,” said Krivohlavy. Examples like Krivohlavy’s bring the event back to Cherry Point roughly four times a year, said Krivohlavy. “By understanding how to maneuver my vehicle, I saved my own life as well as some motorcyclists who were alongside me on the road.” Before driving, SCCA instructors perform safety inspections of participants’ vehicles to ensure tires and breaking systems are operating normally. Marine Corps Community Services hosted service members, community members and their families at the Two Rivers Theater here Saturday for East Carolina University Storybook Theater’s performance of “A Christmas Carol.” “A Christmas Carol” tells the story of Ebenezer Scrooge, a greedy, cold-hearted man visited by the ghosts of Christmases past, present and future, who show him the errors of his ways. The play examines his life’s journey and the true meaning of Christmas. Charles Dickens’ tale of transformation and personal redemption is universal, according to Patch Clark, Storybook Theatre director and ECU professor. “This story has a very special message about taking time to treasure friends and family as well as showing kindness to others all year long,” according to Clark. “This is a great message for audience members of any age and a play is a wonderful way to get that message See CAROL page A7

Marine Air Support Squadron 1 took time to remember their fallen brethren during their annual Chieftain Run at Cherry Point Nov. 14. Each year MASS-1 Marines run a three-mile course of remembrance to honor former MASS-1 Marines who have paid the ultimate sacrifice in support of past and current operations. The purpose of the run is to remember the legacy of fallen Marines and build esprit de corps in their honor, according to 2nd Lt. Matthew D. Harrell, an air support control officer with MASS-1. “Before the run we talk about why we do the run,” said Harrell. “It’s designed to get you out and you end up running with people you hadn’t known before.” All Marines from the squadron take part in the event. The run helps reinforce and strengthen unit cohesion by recalling the past and looking toward the future, according to Harrell. “The run shows me that [MASS-1

Great American Smokeout today Americans across the country will say goodbye to their nicotine products and make today their official quit day or make a plan to quit their addiction as part of the American Cancer Society’s Great American Smokeout. Over the years, the nation has made great strides in reducing the number of people who smoke, but more than 44 million Americans continue to smoke, making tobacco the leading cause of preventable early death in the nation. In 1976, the Great American Smokeout officially began when the California division of the American Cancer Society set aside a day for smokers to abstain. In the first year, 1 million smokers quit for the day. Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point fully supports this national day of awareness. In recognition of the effort, the Marine Corps Exchange and MCX Troop Stores will not sell tobacco products today. Additionally, Marine Corps Community Services will trade quit aids for your nicotine products. Call 466-6474 for more details and resources.

Giving thanks on Thanksgiving CMDR. PHILIP J. PELIKAN DEPUTY WING CHAPLAIN

The last time I wrote for The Windsock, I wrote about Halloween. This time it happens that I write just before the people of the United States celebrate that unique American holiday, Thanksgiving. Although the actual origins of a special day of giving thanks dates back to the time of the Pilgrims who landed at Plymouth Rock, the actual national holiday was born from the pain of the Civil War. Unfortunately, we often forget the meaning of Thanksgiving, focusing on our modern pursuits. Thanksgiving Day means many things to many people. Many people think about spending time with family, as this is one of the busiest travel weekends of the year. Other people look forward to watching the football games played on Thanksgiving every year. Thanksgiving is also near the beginning of hunting season so many go hunting for the Thanksgiving holiday. Whatever your passion is, and whatever it is that you enjoy on this great day off from our work, never forget the origin of the national holiday, or the significance of the pain from which it was conceived. I invite you to recall those origins in this excerpt from the papers of one of America’s shining lights of history as found in the Library of America series, Vol. II, Pages 520-521. “The year that is drawing towards its close, has been filled with the blessings of fruitful fields and healthful skies. To these bounties, which are so constantly enjoyed that we are prone to forget the source from which they come, others have been added, which are of so extraordinary a nature that they cannot fail to penetrate

and soften even the heart which is habitually insensible to the ever watchful providence of Almighty God…It has seemed to me fit and proper that they should be solemnly, reverently and gratefully acknowledged as with one heart and voice by the whole American People. I do therefore invite my fellow citizens in every part of the United States, and also those who are at sea and those who are sojourning in foreign lands, to set apart and observe the last Thursday of November next, as a day of Thanksgiving and Praise to our beneficent Father who dwelleth in the Heavens. And I recommend to them that while offering up the ascriptions justly due to Him for such singular deliverances and blessings, they do also, with humble penitence for our national perverseness and disobedience, commend to his tender care all those who have become widows, orphans, mourners or sufferers in the lamentable civil strife in which we are unavoidably engaged, and fervently implore the interposition of the Almighty Hand to heal the wounds of the nation and to restore it as soon as may be consistent with the Divine purposes to the full enjoyment of peace, harmony, tranquility and Union.” – Abraham Lincoln, October 3, 1863. Although we’re no longer fighting a gruesome civil war, we are still engaged in a lengthy war that has produced similar casualties (…widows, orphans, mourners and sufferers in the lamentable strife) which should inspire similar humility and even penitence. Our prosperity and abundance, however, still prevail. For those things, we should be extremely thankful. I, therefore, conclude by saying Happy Thanksgiving to all of you.

Pfc. Elliott L. Vickers joined the Marine Corps January 14, 2013, leading to his role as an Aircraft Rescue and Fire Fighting specialist with Marine Wing Support Squadron 272. “My job is important to me because if pilots go down, they rely on us to save them,” said Vickers. “That gives me proof I’m giving back.” A normal day for him consists of checking vehicles, studying knowledge, and conducting drills to build his ability to operate the P-19 fire fighting truck and other tools of the trade, he said. “Learning all of the different knowledge is the most challenging part,” said Vickers. “We need to know how to operate our own equipment along with the differences between all the aircraft on the station.” Knowledge is the key to advancing within his military occupational specialty, he said. “I’m really focusing on how I can improve myself right now,” said the Thomasville, N.C., native. “Getting a chance to get to know everyone is the best part – being a part of the world’s greatest fraternal brotherhood.”

Members of Cherry Point’s Marine Air Control Squadron 2 laced up their cleats for the annual Turkey Bowl flag football tournament Friday to build camaraderie and attempt to take the crown away from the defending champions. The defending champions, the detachment C “Bogue Rats,” overcame an early loss to retain the trophy against seven other MACS-2 teams for the second consecutive year. The Rats blew out New River’s air traffic control detachment “B Team” in the final game, 39-16. The champions had their work cut out for them right out of the gate. Fumbling the opening game to B Team, the Bogue Rats had to play sound football to get back in the finals, according to Chief Warrant Officer 2 Jason D. Mincolla, team captain of the Bogue Rats. “I think we were just nervous the first game,” said Mincolla. “We really pushed back those next five games, plus the fact that (B Team) suffered a key injury really improved our odds.” Each team featured of a mix of officer and enlisted players working their way through the brackets to prove which detachment was the best on the gridiron. “It was good football all day,” said Mincolla. “People really started to take it seriously the closer they got to the finals.” Beckie Kerkendies, the squadron family readiness officer said the tournament, now in its fifth year, continues to grow and improve. “The event was excellent this year,” said Kerkendies. “Everyone who came out had a great time, with a lot of awesome games.”

Operation Damayan in full swing LANCE CPL. ANNE HENRY

Melchur, right, a landing support specialist with the 520th Air Base Wing, and a U.S. Marine, left, guide an MV-22B Osprey Nov. 14 at Villamor Air Base as part of Operation Damayan. The Osprey provides a unique capability in this type of operation due to its vertical take off and landing capabilities and its ability to convert quickly to fixed wing configuration, giving it increased speed and range. Super Typhoon Yolanda (international name Haiyan) has impacted more than 4.2 million people across 36 provinces in the Philippines according to the government’s National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council.

MANILA, Republic of the Philippines — By the morning of Nov. 11, U.S. Marines from 3rd Marine Expeditionary Brigade had distributed approximately 384,400 pounds of relief supplies and helped 1,735 people displaced by Super Typhoon Yolanda (international name Haiyan) find their way to Manila. Operation Damayan is the U.S. government’s response to the Philippine government’s request for humanitarian assistance. Twelve U.S. Marine KC-130J Hercules, several helicopters and eight MV-22B Ospreys from the 1st Marine Aircraft Wing deployed to the Philippines to help transport supplies, military members and civilian relief personnel to typhoon affected areas of the country still largely impassable by other means. “Clearly the U.S. military offers unique capabilities,” said Daniel Dieckhaus, a humanitarian assistance ad-

viser with the office of U.S. Foreign Disaster Assistance. “Without the U.S. military helping the Philippine armed forces with air transport capability, there would be no way of getting to some of these areas.” U.S. relief efforts include maritime search and rescue, fixed-wing lift support, medium to heavy helicopter lift support and logistics enablers. “The current situation remains the same. It’s a serious disaster and there are a lot of people in need,” said Dieckhaus. “But we have ramped up significantly in the last 72 to 96 hours and we know where to target. We are here, but there is a lot of work to do.” “The men and woman of the U.S. armed forces assisting the Republic of the Philippines are as dedicated to this mission as they are to the defense of their country,” said Brig. Gen. Paul Kennedy, the deputy commander of III Marine Expeditionary Force and the commanding general of the 3rd MEB. “Assisting fulfills a promise that we

made to friends and allies we’ve maintained a great relationship with over the last 100 years to be here in their time of need.” Typhoon Haiyan/Yolanda has impacted more than 4.2 million people across 36 provinces in the Philippines, according to the Philippine’s national disaster risk reduction and management council. Despite the scale of the damage, the operation validated the joint training and collaboration skills of U.S. and Philippine forces, who worked together to resolve problems and provide aid during the Philippine-led operation. “We have been working with [Marines] all throughout the year and for years before that,” said Col. Miguel E. Okol, the director of the public information office, Philippine air force. “The Marine Corps is optimized similar to ours, very disciplined and hardworking, and on behalf of our leadership, we appreciate their help.”

Pilots and crew members from Marine Heavy Helicopter Squadron 366 conducted a night fire exercise off the coast of Marine Corps Outlying Field Atlantic Nov. 14, aiming to sharpen their combat effectiveness. Firing from a CH-53E Super Stallion, the Marines employed Browning M2 .50-caliber machine guns while maintaining communication between pilots and crew. The combination of firepower and constant communication between pilots and crew makes the aircraft a potent force in support of realworld operations. During live fire exercises, communication between gunners and pilots is key, said Capt. Tyson Metlen, a CH-53 pilot with HMH-366. “Maintaining good communication and keeping the aircraft stable are essential,” said Metlen. “[We] let the crew know our movement so they can adjust their fire and prepare for a maneuver.” Metlen, who has been with HMH-366 for nearly a year, has twice piloted night fire exercises. The training helps pilot and crew maximize their combat prowess, he said. “Any time [we’re] going into a landing zone, or taking enemy fire, we can be used for defensive measures such as suppressing the enemy,” said Metlen. Firing accurately on a target from a moving heli-

copter is challenging at best. Gunners rely on their pilots to maintain a steady, consistent flight pattern to help provide accurate air-to-ground fire, according to Sgt. Timothy Gayson, a crew chief and aerial gunner with HMH-366. “You need to be able to tell the pilots how you need the aircraft to be maneuvered,” said Gayson. “That communication [gives the gunners] more time and better angles to put rounds on the target.” Gayson, who has deployed twice to Afghanistan, attended the Weapons and Tactics Instructor course in Yuma, Ariz., to train as an aerial gunner instructor. “There is a big difference between firing a .50-cal out of the aircraft and firing from the ground,” said Gayson. “[Aircraft mounted guns] shoot and reload faster, maneuver quicker, and are more accurate from the lack of recoil.” Because of the pace of real world operations, live fire exercises help prepare pilots and gunners physically and mentally to support Marines while deployed combat environments. In combat everything happens so fast, and with the boost of adrenaline anyone can get tunnel vision, said Gayson. “So the training we conduct here, where we practice how to lead, track and follow targets helps with avoiding tunnel vision and judging distance when we’re out in Afghanistan,” said Gayson.

across.” The ensemble 22-member cast hopes the performance was not only entertaining but also inspiring to Cherry Point’s military family, Clark said. “Many of the students in the production are from military families and performing on a military base is like being at home for them,” said Clark. “This is their way of showing their dedication and appreciation to our military while at the same time getting a practicum experience.” The students have performed at Cherry Point for the past two years. This was the first year many of the students have performed on a military installation, according to Clinton Long, a senior at ECU. “It is extremely important for the college students to maintain a relationship with the military, because they are the future and the standing relationship is vital to sustaining our freedom,” said Long. For Long, who plays Charles Dickens and several other characters in the production, touring is exciting and he is thrilled to perform for the military because his father was in the National Guard. “I love entertaining and making people laugh,” said Long. “It’s the best time you can have in my opinion. It’s better than a roller coaster.” The free event gave audience members a chance to see Dickens’ timeless classic brought to life on stage. The community spirit was also a highlight of the event, according to Marine wife Monica Requejo. “Being new to the area it is difficult to find different things to do to keep the children entertained, and free events like this make us feel appreciated and special,” said Requejo. Requejo, who brought her four children to the event, believes events like “A Christmas Carol” help bring the community closer together in a fun and affordable way. After the performance, children were encouraged to go up to the stage to meet with the actors and technical crew to ask questions and take photos with cast members. “Events like this are fun and affordable for families. It boosts morale while leaving the audience with a positive message,” said Requejo.

This bi-monthly training allows the squadron crew members to build critical skills in conjunction with 2nd Recon. “This training helps strengthen the relationship between the ground side and the air side. They are getting the qualifications they need to jump while we are getting the qualifications to allow them to jump,” said Valenti. In addition to its primary role as an aerial refueling squadron, VMGR-252 provides aerial insertion, close air support, and assualt support to Marines operating on the ground. If something needs to happen, they are the ones who will make it happen, Valenti said. Aerial insertions are crucial said Master Sgt. Daniel R. Howe. Although they are not necessary in every situation, when you need them, there is nothing like it, said Howe, an operations chief with 2nd Recon. “This training for 2nd Recon was sustainment, and it helped many of the Marines attain qualifications and certifications,” said Howe. “The Marines were given new parachutes that they were not trained with while attending school and this training finished up their qualifications.” Everything went as planned and the mission for the training was accomplished, said Howe. Marines on both sides performed well, he said.

CHIEFTAIN from page A1 value as an event and as a bond, according to Lt. Col. AnDroy D. Senegar, the squadron’s commanding officer. Senegar assumed command of MASS-1 Nov. 7. “We are a family. I haven’t done this run before and I haven’t been in MASS-1 very long, so it’s very important to me that we uphold every tradition that we have put forth,” said Senegar. “Once you become a MASS-1 Marine, once you become a Chieftain, you’re always a Chieftain.”

AUTOCROSS from page A1 to test driver capabilities and vehicle limits, according to Gunnery Sgt. Nathaniel Tiuseco, an airframe mechanic with Marine Tactical Electronic Warfare Squadron 3. “It definitely teaches you the limits of your car. If you try to push faster than you should, you’ll see cars spinning out or hitting a cone they’re not supposed to,” said Tiuseco.” Doing it here in this environment under the safety of the SCCA staff is the place to do it.” Tiuseco drove the course six times in his vehicle, improving on his driving precision, control and patience with each run. Autocross gives participants a safe and legal outlet for their need for speed, according to Tisuseco. “Marines need a place to vent,” said Tisuseco. “I know we like to soup up our cars and go fast. If they really want to put the hammer down, they can do it here and do it safe.”

Jimmie Johnson ends 2013 Chase with sixth Sprint Cup title

Brian Lawdermilk for Chevrolet Brian Lawdermilk for Chevrolet

Even before he secured his sixth Sprint Cup championship with a ninth-place finish in the Ford EcoBoost 400 at Homestead-Miami Speedway, Jimmie Johnson was considered one of the greatest NASCAR drivers ever. The questions for many now become how long he and Chad Knaus, his crew chief since the start of his Cup career, can keep on dominating the series and where they will end up on the all-time winners lists in NASCAR. Denny Hamlin, who won the season finale to extend his own record to eight consecutive seasons with at least one win, is among those who have challenged Johnson for a title but come up short. In 2010, Hamlin led the series in victories with eight and took a 15-point lead over Johnson in the season finale only to lose the championship to him. Hamlin said Sunday that Johnson’s team stands apart from the rest because it usually doesn’t make errors when the pressure is on. “They just don’t make any mistakes,” he said. “They don’t have 20th or worse finishes that it seems like every one team has throughout the Chase, whether it be a superspeedway or whatever. You have to beat him on performance. To do that, that’s really hard.” He said that Johnson, who has 66 career Cup wins, is the best NASCAR driver of all time. “Unfortunately, we’re racing during the Jimmie Johnson era,” Hamlin said. “We’re just unlucky in that sense. I think being out there and racing with him, I can say that I think he’s the best that there ever was. He’s racing against competition that is tougher than this sport’s ever seen.” Hamlin’s teammate Matt Kenseth, who finished second to Hamlin at Homestead and second to Johnson in the championship standings, agreed that Johnson’s success is unparalleled. “Jimmie and that team are obviously unbelievable,” Kenseth said. “Never seen anything like this in the sport and probably will never see anything like it again. It’s amazing with as tight as the rules are, multi-car teams, information sharing, and all that stuff. It’s amazing they can figure out how to do that year after year.” Johnson’s championship puts him within

Petty said that making comparisons between his and Earnhardt’s and Johnson’s records is meaningless because they were set in different eras, under different circumstances. “Earnhardt did his thing in his time against his competition,” Petty said. “I did mine against my competition and [Johnson’s] doing his thing against his competition. “We didn’t compete with each other. In other words, he wasn’t there to race against Richard Petty or Earnhardt, and we didn’t have to race against Jimmie Johnson, either. You can’t compare. It’s not apples and apples. It’s apples and oranges.”

Jimmie Johnson takes a victory lap in his No. 48 Lowe’s Chevrolet after capturing his sixth Sprint Cup Series championship Sunday at Homestead-Miami Speedway. Petty did say that he and Johnson do share one major factor in that they both have done the bulk of their winning with the same crew chief — Johnson with Chad Knaus and Petty with his cousin Dale Inman. “It’s everything,” Petty said of the chemistry between driver and crew chief. “It’s just like me and Dale Inman. It was like a one-operation show with two people, so you’ve got to have that. It doesn’t make any difference if it’s football or baseball or whatever.” Petty also said that Johnson and Knaus likely would keep on winning for some time to come. “He’s liable to go to eight to 10 [championships],” he said. In his champion’s interview, Johnson seemed comfortable with his greatness, as described by those around him. “I’m humbled by the nice things that have been said by competitors and owners, my peers in this industry,” he said. “I think their opinion is very important. I don’t think my opinion matters. It’s not for the athlete, the driver. It’s bestowed upon you, it’s passed down from others.”

Austin Dillon and his No. 3 Chevrolet struggled to a 12th-place finish in the season finale for the Nationwide Series, but it was enough to give him the driver’s championship by three points over Sam Hornish Jr., who finished eighth. It was Dillon’s second NASCAR title, the first coming in the Camping World Truck Series in 2011. Brad Keselowski won the Ford 300 at Homestead-Miami Speedway, and his car owner Roger Penske and his No. 22 Ford team took the owner’s title by one point over the No. 54 Toyota team owned by J.D. Gibbs. The finish of the race and the outcome of the championship were clouded in controversy when a 12-lap caution period near the end of the race prevented Hornish, who had outrun Dillon for much of the race, from being able to close the points gap on Dillon. Robin Pemberton, NASCAR’s vice president of competition, met with the media to explain why NASCAR didn’t display the red flag and stop the race while the track was cleaned. “It really looked like it was going to be a typical cleanup, a typical wreck,” he said. “You can use your hindsight every chance that you want to, but in this particular time, we did the best we could to do and it was more important to get the track ready.” Pemberton also said there was no pressure from ESPN, which was broadcasting the race, to end it as soon as possible so that it wouldn’t interfere with the broadcast of the Alabama-Mississippi State football game. “There was nothing like that,” he said. Dillon, who plans to move on to the Sprint Cup Series next season, said it wouldn’t

been a caution. It’s just one of those things that wasn’t meant to be.” Dillon, who drives for his grandfather Richard Childress, said he’s looking forward to the next step of his career. “That [Sprint Cup] level is a little bit bigger of a jump for sure,” he said. “I’m looking forward to the challenge. I think definitely Rookie of the Year is definitely what we want to get next year. That’s our main focus, and to gain as much experience as I can.” Keselowski, who went from 10th place to first in the final laps at Homestead, secured Ford the manufacturer’s title for the series and gave the carmaker 15 Nationwide wins for the year. Keselowski, the defending Cup champion, also played a key role in Penske winning the owner’s title. While he drove the team’s No. 48 Ford at Homestead, he had seven wins in Penske’s No. 22 throughout the season. His Cup teammate Joey Logano had three, A.J. Allmendinger had two and Ryan Blaney one in the No. 22. Trevor Bayne and Hornish also had a win apiece this season for Ford. Kyle Larson, who finished second at Homestead to give him four runner-up finishes for the season, was named the circuit’s Rookie of the Year. The Asian-American youngster is the first Drive for Diversity participant to take that honor. “A lot of the veterans in the past and in the current Cup Series have won the Rookie of the Year,” said Larson, who will race in Cup next year for Chip Ganassi’s Chevrolet team. “To add my name to that list hopefully means I’m doing something good.”

Matt Crafton has been one of the most consistent drivers in the Camping World Truck Series with 316 consecutive starts. But his most recent start, on Friday at HomesteadMiami Speedway, produced the biggest moment of his career. Just by starting the season-ending Ford 200 he clinched the driver’s title for the first time in his career. It also was the first time his team, owned by Duke and Rhonda Thorson, had been part of a championship, but a crash on the first of three green-white-checkered runs to the finish cost the Thorsons an owner’s title. Kyle Busch wound up winning the race and tying the Thorsons atop the owner’s standings, so the title went to Busch because he had more race wins this season. Still, it was a major milestone for Crafton and the Thorsons. “It’s an honor to be able to do it for Duke and Rhonda Thorson that have been doing this for 18 years, and to give them the first championship and me driving for them for 13 years,” said Crafton, who also had high praise for the crew of his No. 88 Toyota. “These guys are the ones that work so hard,” he said. “I’m just the one that gets to celebrate and look like the hero because I got to drive a great truck all year.” Crafton had an amazingly consistent year. He won at Kansas Speedway and had 19 top-10 finishes in 22 starts. He also had an 11th-place run, at Las Vegas. His Homestead finish was his worst of the season, but he still finished on the lead lap despite his late-race crash, which meant that he completed all 3,391 laps this season. “It’s been an awesome year,” Crafton said. “It’s been the greatest year of my life so far. To have a baby and win a NASCAR championship, nobody can ever take that away from me.” Busch’s owner’s championship came on the strength of six wins for the No. 51 Toyota team, five by Busch and one by rookie Eric Jones. Others driving that truck this season included Scott Bloomquist, Chad Hackenbracht and Denny Hamlin. Ryan Blaney, who finished second at Homestead, won the circuit’s Rookie of the Year honors.

Johnson runs away from Chase field for sixth Sprint Cup Series championship Final points standings and race results following the Ford EcoBoost 400 at Homestead-Miami Speedway:

1. JIMMIE JOHNSON (finished ninth) 2,419; champion He did what he needed to do — and a little more — to secure his sixth Sprint Cup championship. His run was not without a few anxious moments, including one during a restart at Lap 194 when he and Matt Kenseth collided, causing only minor damage to their cars.

2. MATT KENSETH (finished second) 2,400 points; behind -19 He led the most laps (144) and gave his No. 20 Toyota a spirited run, but he was unable to overcome the points deficit created by his poor finish at Phoenix the week before. Still, he was smiling afterward. “Obviously it’s been a great year, best year I’ve ever had.”

3. KEVIN HARVICK (finished 10th) 2,385 points; behind -34 In his final ride at Richard Childress Racing, he was one of three drivers still mathematically eligible for the championship, but he never really got his No. 29 Chevrolet up to a winning speed. “Obviously it’s not what we wanted, but came back and were way better at the end than what we were in the beginning.”

4. KYLE BUSCH (finished seventh) 2,364 points; behind -55 Although he never got his car driving to his liking, he was good enough to secure his best-ever points finish. “We were able to dig hard there on the last run of the race and pick up enough spots to hold onto fourth in the standings, which is a big deal.”

5. DALE EARNHARDT JR.

10. KURT BUSCH

(finished third) 2,363 points; behind -56 For much of the race it looked as if he’d be able to get his first win of the season, but he still ended the season stronger than he has in years. “This has been one of the best years I’ve had, certainly the best year I’ve had working with Hendrick [Motorsports].”

(finished 21st) 2,309 points; behind -110 Making his final start in the No. 78 Chevrolet before moving to Stewart-Haas Racing for 2014, he started on the outside pole but faded as the race went on. “I am disappointed right now, but tomorrow I am going to look back at this season and be very proud of what we were able to accomplish.”

6. JEFF GORDON (finished 11th) 2,337 points; behind -82 The defending winner of the Ford EcoBoost 400 appeared to have the speed to score a top-five finish until the latter stages of the race. “We made an adjustment that I asked for there at the end, and it just went the wrong way.”

7. CLINT BOWYER (finished fifth) 2,336 points; behind -83 A strong finish at Homestead propelled him to his second top-five finish in the Chase and his 10th of the season. Overall, he finished the year with 19 top-10 finishes, including six in the 10-race Chase.

8. JOEY LOGANO (finished eighth) 2,323 points; behind -96 He fought a loose handling condition but still salvaged a top-10 finish to end his first season at Penske Racing with another positive result. “I had a lot of fun this year, and this was my best season personally. I’d still call it a good season, not a great season.”

9. GREG BIFFLE (finished 24th) 2,321 points; behind -98 After finishing third at New Hampshire in the second race of the Chase and moving from 10th to fifth in the standings, he was never a factor in the championship and ended the season with his worst finish of the Chase.

11. RYAN NEWMAN (finished 17th) 2,286 points; behind -133 His final ride in the No. 39 Chevrolet at Stewart-Haas Racing before moving to Richard Childress Racing didn’t produce the result he wanted, but he was pleased with the season. “We won the Brickyard 400, we made the Chase, I think we had top-10 finishes in half the races. We certainly can’t hang our heads about that. But as racers, you always want more.”

12. KASEY KAHNE (finished 13th) 2,283 points; behind -136 He won twice in the regular season, but struggled points-wise. He ended the year with 10 finishes outside the top 25, three of which were in the Chase. That offset the gains that came from 11 top-five finishes for the season, three of which were in the Chase.

13. CARL EDWARDS (finished 12th) 2,282 points; behind -137 He ended the 26-race regular season as the points leader but wound up at the bottom of the Chase standings after the final 10 races. And Homestead, historically one of his better tracks, confounded him. “This track is usually our bread and butter ... so it’s tough.”

Despite near freezing temperatures, Cherry Point patrons lined up outside the Two Rivers Theater here more than three hours early for the fifth annual Guitar Pull Nov. 13. More than 1,800 music lovers filled the theater to capacity for the free community event. The annual concert brought country music talents Thompson Square, Jana Kramer, Jon Pardi, Cole Swindell and American Young to the stage to sing acoustic versions of their songs. “Events like this are a great way to develop relationships and allow community members living in town to come on to the station and get a firsthand look at what the Marines and Sailors are doing here,” said Beth McKenzie, the marketing director with Marine Corps Community Services. The artists performed for Cherry Point Marines and Sailors to demonstrate that the community supports the mission of its service members. “The Guitar Pull always turns out to be a great show, and we plan to continue with many more successful years in the future,” said McKenzie. Special guest Bryan Mayer, a New Bern native, kicked off the show with the national anthem while the Headquarters and Headquarters Squadron color guard presented the colors. Mayer, a self-described “military brat,” was excited for the opportunity to perform. “My father proudly served with ya’ll on this station for 20 plus years, and singing the national anthem here has always been a huge dream of mine,” said Mayer. Country music artist Kristy Osmunson said the music industry has taken her all over the country, but performing for service members is by far her favorite kind of show to play. “It reminds us of why we do music in the first place,” said Osmunson, vocalist, violin and guitar player with the band American Young. The event was sponsored by local country music radio station WRNS and other area businesses who raffled a guitar signed by all the performers to promote Toys for Tots. Osmunson said it is amazing to see military personnel who still find time to volunteer. “These men and women give up their entire lives to serve their country and its citizens, and that is extremely inspiring to me. I am so glad to be here performing for them,” she said.

Holiday Safety Turkey frying tips for Thanksgiving CONTRIBUTED ARTICLE MCAS CHERRY POINT

The Cherry Point Fire Department has several policies in place to ensure the safety of air station residents during the holiday season. No permits for turkey fryers will be issued on the flight line, hangars, industrial, motor transport, flammable or combustible areas, or any area the Fire Inspection Department deems unsafe. No turkey fryers will be permitted in the Fleet Readiness Center East industrial areas. Contact the fire department by calling 466-7570 at least 48 hours prior to requesting a cooking and hot work permit to have a site survey and inspection of all equipment with safety gear placed appropriate distances from structures. All Atlantic Marine Corps Community housing residents should contact their housing representative to determine the established guidelines set by AMCC regarding turkey fryers in housing areas. Safety tips • Turkey fryers should always be used outdoors, a safe distance from buildings (minimum 20 feet) and other materials that can burn, with a 10 foot clearance around the fryer. • Never use turkey fryers on wooden decks, in garages or under eaves. • Use turkey fryers on a flat surface to keep them from tipping. • Never leave the fryer unattended. Most units do not have thermostat controls. Left unattended, the oil will continue to heat until it catches fire. • Never let children or pets near the fryer. • Do not overfill the fryer. Doing so may cause the oil to catch fire from the burner. The fryer must be large enough to hold the oil and the turkey with plenty of room between the top of the oil and the top of the fryer. Test the fryer using water before heating the oil. Don’t try to fry a turkey that is too large for the fryer. • Wipe the turkey down with paper towels inside and out before immersing it. The hot oil turns the water into steam, which accelerates to the surface and may create a hazardous geyser. • Lids and handles can become extremely hot. Use well-insulated pot holders or oven mitts when handling any part of the pot. • Wear safety goggles to protect your eyes in case of oil spatter. • Keep a dry chemical multi-purpose fire extinguisher nearby. Don’t use water to extinguish a grease fire. • Follow the manufacturer’s directions.
